It's a steak house and a good one according to my dinner mates. Â There were many compliments on the meat cuts. Â I opted for the salad bar which had so many choices that I could not try everything that I wanted to try. Â I filled my plate all sorts of fresh vegetables, cheeses, and veggie side items. Â It ranks as one of the best salad bars that I have ever had the pleasure of grazing. Â My baked potato was a little overdone, but no worries due to the fantastic salad.
The service was so-so as the waiter seemed to forget about us from time to time. Â We sat for a long while waiting on our check. Â That was just a slight inconvenience to an otherwise great dinner.
I know! Â Yet another steak house. Â But this one was different because it had the best salad bar I've ever encountered! Â Everything under the sun you could think of, and then some. Â I went back twice and still wished I had room in my tummy for more.
The decor is nice and woodsy.  They have a nice open bar area too.  The service was good.  The lemonade wasn't so good - I could taste that it was made from powder  :( Â
It was in our hotel parking lot so it made it easy to walk over. Â The wait was about 15 minutes for dinner on a Tuesday evening around 8:00 p.m. so they do a good business. Â I'll go back when I'm in El Paso again.
Stayed nearby at the Radisson on a day off. Had the prime rib lunch special with the salad bar. Prime rib was really tasty. But mine and my friends were a little overcooked so if you prefer medium rare order rare. Baked potato was ok. Decent salad bar with a really good pozole as their soup of the day at the salad bar. Service was friendly and prompt. I would eat their again if I'm ever forced to stay at the radisson in el paso again.
Review Source:If you are looking for a salad bar that is a city block long, a huge slab of meat, a small loaf of bread, and a massive loaded baked potato, and you want it all for around $25, this is your place. Â If you want outstanding food (or even above average food), keep looking. Â I would place the quality of the food somewhere between golden corral and longhorn steakhouse. Â If you are a quantity over quality person, step right up!
Review Source:As we walked in the General Manager trust a trash can in my husbands face demanding he dispose of his monster. There were no signs posted saying, no drinks allowed and the manager made a seen about it. We only stayed because my husband wanted prime rib so badly. After my husband took his drink outside, I told the manager how unacceptable his behavior was and he apologized to me. The server we had was wonder and they have an impressive salad bar. The prime ribs came out wrong and I had a tough end piece so they got me a new one. The prime ribs were tough compared to others I've had but the flavor was good. I had to call the GM to our table and have him apologize to my husband because he avoided us the whole time. The GM apologized but made some BS excuse that he thought my husband wanted to throw it away. We were not offered a discount for all of the trouble, which was a bit surprising.
Review Source:Just visited for the first time and was very pleased. One of the best salad bars I have ever seen, and the fat free ranch was the best I have ever had. The waiter said they make everything fresh in-house...It all tasted very fresh.  I had  the Chicken Oscar, Loved it!!! But, I warn you, it was a large meal, so don't be surprised if you end up taking half of it in a doggy bag. Hubby has the large ribeye, it was cooked perfectly.  Our son had the catfish, also very good and bonus, house tarter sauce that was great and steamed fresh veggies...OMG all so good.  I guess I should tell you that the service was also excellent, friendly, and responsive.
Review Source:My husband took me to Cattle Baron's for our wedding anniversary. We visited once and won't be back.
The steak we both ordered was average at best. Most people rave about the salad bar ...maehhh, it could have been worse but quantity still does not equal quality. Run of the mill dressings, average no more no less.
The place was busy. The turn off was the waiter. A continuous "can i get you anything else" apparently was code for "get out of here, I need the table, here is your check". I hate being rushed and I am accustomed to being able to sit and enjoy the company instead of being rushed out of the door.
Zero tip, no chance of ever coming back.
Visited here on my last business trip...
Positives:
Convenient to hotel - walking distance
Decent bar for waiting
Friendly host and staff
Not so positives:
Not a salad bar guy so even though others were piling it on I had the Caesar salad that was mediocre at best.
Server was friendly but either brand new of not a multitasker... Â Can we have some rolls with our salad sure...tick..tick...tick.... Â excuse me about those rolls...tick.. tick... tick... OK would you mind bringing us some rolls on your way back.... Great!! Rolls!!!.... Um how bout some butter......
How would you like your steak? Medium please... Steak arrives well done....
Next time I'll try the Italian restaurant on the other side of the hotel or the Mexican restaurant down the street...
While visiting El Paso, TX, we observed this run of the mill restaurant. Once inside we were greeted by a wonderful host. We first ordered the cheese wontons which were very delicious and full of flavor. Since each entree has a complimentary salad bar, we enjoyed an array of choices which can compete with the best out there. PS. try the beets and the jalapeno ranch. My family ate the filet minion, and the prime rib dinners. They enjoyed the soft bovine and the delicious bread. I had the jalapeno chicken which was nothing special.
I gave it a 5 because my overall experience there was unbelievable. MY entree was not the best but the rest were as well as the salad bar. If in El Paso, this is a must go!!!!
I've been to Cattle Baron a few times since 2007 and I've been happy with it every time. Service has been fantastic each time I've been. I never had to wait for a refill on my drink, and they bring complimentary bread with a great garlic butter that really compliments the bread.
I usually get the salad bar which is well stocked and full of choices. They have enough of everything to make a salad you'll enjoy. Â Lettuce, spinach, corn salad, spiced tomatoes and cumbers as well as the usual vegetables are all there. There also have fresh pasta salad as well. Â They always have two flavorful soups that add to the already plentiful choices.
For dessert, you can enjoy fresh fruit, banana pudding, or mousse that's right next to all the great choices on the salad bar.
I've also ordered their catfish at lunch at it was very tasty. Fried and breaded in cornmeal, it reminded me of the catfish I used to eat in the South. That was a pleasant surprise as well.
I think the salad bar is a steal at $7.95 and I haven't ever had a problem with food quality or anything like that.
If you want a nice family restaurant where you can enjoy steak, salad or seafood, this is a good place to go.
Ate there twice last week as I was staying in the Raddison next door. Â The beef is very good (burger and prime rib) at very reasonable prices and healthy portions.
The salad bar may be the hit of the place. Huge and well stocked with bread and soup as well as an array of toppings. Its included with most all entrees.
Service ok, but not over the top. Worth a try if you're in the area.
Been here twice, had a burger the first time and the other time got the salad bar. Â On both visits the service was ok and the food was acceptable. Â I doubt they will win any awards any time soon, but it hit the spot. Â The last time, they had problems with the Guinness on tap, so I spent half my meal without any beverage, and when it did arrive it was not right...tasted like it ran out of nitrogen.
Review Source:Preface/background: I eat more than average in terms of quantity (I've eaten 2 Chipotle Burritos in one sitting) but appreciate quality and am always looking for a great deal.
Ordered the 20 oz prime rib. Â It was seasoned well, got it medium rare. Â I thought it tasted good. Â A little on the saltier side than I would have liked it. Â It came with the salad bar, which is a huge salad bar with a huge selection. Â The bread was soft and warm on the inside, slightly hard on the outside. Â I liked the consistency of it. Â The prime rib comes with a choice of either a potato, veggies, corn, and a bunch of other sides that you can choose from. Â The medium rare was truly medium rare, and I was pleasantly surprised.
Overall, it was a bit expensive, I dropped $30 for the whole meal after tip, so that's what brings it down to a 3. Â It was a good amount of food, but it wasn't worth $30. Â Maybe $25 or $20. Â It was good though. Â I'd come back if I had some money to blow and I wanted to stay close to the airport.
I have lived in El Paso all my life and I must say, after all the years of hearing about how AMAZING Cattle Baron is, I can't say that I was missing anything. The only saving grace was the salad bar, minus their flavorless pasta salads.
I ordered the "Rio Pollo" and for $14 bucks I was expecting a nice presentation or a hearty helping. All I got was a piece of chicken slapped on a plate with rice spooned on the side on a cheap plate. By that point, I wasn't excited to be there. I choked down the chicken, and ate one bite of the rice only to spit it out because of how disgusting it was. Old and sour.
The service was the worst part of the meal, if you can believe that. Our server came by 5 times. 2 of those were to check to see if we had paid the bill, and not to offer refills. My drink had been empty for 5 or 10 minutes until we found the water pitcher and served ourselves.
This place is pitiful, save your money and time. Unless you're a vegetarian and want to enjoy their salad bar.
I thought this place was GREAT! Â I don't know why it got low reviews. Â I happened to pop in here for a really late lunch and got the following.
1. Â Salad bar (comes with entree) - HUGE fixins for a salad and awesome potato salad! Â I loved it!!
2. Â Bread (comes with entree) - DELISH. Â i'm a huge fan of bread and butter, so the bread was especially good.
3. Â Prime rib - This was medium rare, but it was too over seasoned. Â No biggie though because I just didn't eat the sides and focused on the center. Â Came with baked potato with cheese, chives, bacon, sour cream, and butter.
4. Â Glass of cabernet savignon
Really good and would come again if I happened to be in the area.
Dropped by here for lunch and went with their 6oz Prime Rib lunch special. Â Their complimentary bread and butter was great... fresh out of the oven and the warm butter paired nicely. Â Baked potato with the steak was good, nothing special about this. Â The rib itself was great.. moist, tender, and cut like butter.
And the service was great as well.
We tried this place at the recommendation of the hotel clerk where we were staying.
I got the filet and it was woefully subpar. Â I requested med-rare and it was rare, so I sent it back, but it still was too rare in the center and tough to cut w/ the knife, too chewy. Â I did not finish my steak I was so disappointed. Â Not the melt in the mouth tender that I experienced at the Texas Roadhouse in OKC.
Salad bar had some good selections, but I was bothered by the seriously wilted lettuce leaves I had to pick out of my salad.
I'm giving it 2 stars since the other diners in our group thought their steaks were okay and would probably give the Barron 3 or more stars. Â Me, 1 star is all this restaurant was worth and I would like to express my condolences to the folks in El Paso if this is one of the better steak houses. Â I did see a Texas Roadhouse along the freeway and if the delicious filet I got in OKC is norm for the Roadhouse chain, there is hope for El Paso.
