My family's favorite chinese resteraunt! Â We often go here, takeout or eat in. Â Before me even, my parents ate here. Â You can ask them to make food not on the menu- we love it here! Â For very reasonable prices you get a lot. Â However if you eat in, the space is pretty small. Â Service is friendly. Â We have gone here countless times and will continue!
Review Source:This was pretty good. I stopped in there after having coffee next door (best coffee I've ever had on the East Coast!), and I ordered some take out.
After having read the tips, I saw that the shrimp and melon dish was highly recommended. My stomach would never forgive me for eating shrimp, so I asked if I could get it with chicken instead. The man shook his head no and laughed and said there are no substitutions and something like chicken only going with vegetables and not fruit? ("No substitutions" was easy to understand. I am unsure on the rest of it.)
I ended up getting the honey chicken. It was prepared very nicely with fresh ingredients. It was ready in like five minutes! The flavor was very bland, but the appetizer I got was super flavorful, so maybe that dish is supposed to be bland.
They were quick and friendly; so I might go back and try again and order differently. It's hard to eat Chinese gluten-free, as I really would love to get General Tso's but can't. Af for take out, this place was really nice. My veggies were not overcooked, nor was my food over salty as many other places do.
There were ten or eleven tables in the restaurant. It was decorated nicely and felt quite comfortable for dining in. There isn't a waiting area for take out, so I stood next to the aquarium and read their newspaper article from 1995 while I waited. I will say, I am not an animal right's activist or anything, nor do I have a soft spot in my heart for fish, but I did feel a little sad for these very large fish with so little room to swim in their small tank. I would love to see this place get a giant koy pond for them. :)
We've been going to Char Koon for years (for example, my daughter's baptism lunch was there and she's in college now). Â First of all, this rating is for take out. Â The food cannot be beat in the opinion of me and my family. Â The quantity for the price is a bonus. Â We live nearby and order out at least once per month. Â This isn't pure Chinese, it also has Malaysian and other Southeast Asian tastes. Â We visit Chinese restaurants in virtually all our trips to major cities. Â Most aren't quite comparable to Char Koon, there have been a few, such as Mr Chu's in Los Altos. Â Most are disappointing in comparison, even in the Chiatown's.
You can order dishes that are not on the menu or make other special requests. Â We can feed 6 for about $70 and still have leftovers (again, take out). Â Ordering take out takes 20 minutes, I've rarely experienced a delay. Â Whenever we have a mediocre meal for the family of $90 or more, we say "shoot, we could have had Char Koon for less'. Â Eating there is different, the experience can be hit or miss, taking too long, or poor service. Â Usually not, but it can happen, thus some of the reviews seen here. Â Also, the place is very small, you may be cramped. Â Furthermore, you get significantly more food when taking out. Â Encouraging take-out by offering more food works for them because they don't have the space for more people to stay and eat there/
You have to try the shrimp dumplings!
This isn't your typical chinese restaurant. Â Sure, they have some of the old standby favorites, but be adventurous and order something else. Â My favorite is the Sar Cha Mei Fun. which is stir-fried angel hair rice noodles w/ chicken, pork, shrimp and mushroom in Sar Cha sauce. Â All of the pasta dishes I have tried are fabulous! Â
The hosts are the same that were at Jasmine Restaurant (closed) and are always very nice.
I bit more pricey than standard takeout chinese, but I easily get two meals from an order, and the quality far exceeds anything else in town.
As a long time south Glastonbury resident I can say that Char Koon has been a consistently solid restaurant for years and years. It's very cute inside so the best option if you want dine-in chinese. Very sweet, friendly owners, attentive service, great dishes and flavors. Also a very affordable lunch special. I would recommend it for a quiet date night or business lunch off the beaten path.
Review Source:Easily the best Chinese food I've ever had. Â Beijing Garden in Farmington used to be my favorite, but now Char Koon in South Glastonbury is. Â Way better than PF Chang's even. Â Their General Tso's chicken is incredible - lots of layers of flavor. Â They have the only lo mein noodles I've ever liked.
The restaurant itself is small - be sure to get there early if you want a seat, haha. Â It can get super crowded, and service slows down once the place fills up. Â My only bad experience here has been take-out late at night; the noodles tasted like cleaning fluid, like they had just cleaned their pots or something. Â So I wouldn't recommend ordering too late at night. Â Every other time has been fine.
Highly recommended. Â Total gem of a restaurant. Â Doesn't make you feel gross afterwards like most Chinese places do, either!
For everyone who states that this is a hidden gem in the heart of Glastonbury is absolutely right. Char Koon is excellent. A charming little restaurant with an obvious booming takeout business has about 10 or so quaint tables inside for dining. Reservations are highly recommended; on the night that I dined there I saw tables turn over quickly and fill right back up.
Char Koon doesn't have much for a wine list, but they don't have to, the food is where they shine. The steamed meat dumplings were excellent and bursting with flavor. For dinner, by way of recommendation I chose the Scallop w/ Mala sauce and my date ordered the Volcano Flank Steak. I have not stopped thinking about the scallops since that night, they were THAT good. I also sampled the volcano flank steak which was excellent; spicy and tender.
The staff here was very unobtrusive, yet friendly. They allowed us to linger over dinner without feeling rushed at all. I think that this is my new favorite pacific-rim restaurant. I cannot wait to go back and try other things on the menu.
Their once a year Chinese New Year menu is flavorful, inventive yet traditional, and amongst the best asian food that we have ever had. Â Their special menu is only available once a year for limited time. Â And every year is different.
While we were living in CT, we would visit this place a couple times in a week during the the holiday season. Â Their regular menu is way better than CT average, but unfortunately, not nearly as good as places in Flushing, NYC, or Silicon Valley.
For their seasonal Chinese New Year Menu 5+ Stars, but 2 stars for their regular menu.
Reservations for their seasonal tasting is highly recommended for weekend dinners, unless you want to visit during non-peak hours.
We truely miss their seasonal menu.
I really don't understand all the great reviews for this place. I went after it was really hyped up to be sorely disappointed. I ordered the Pad Thai as my gauge of the place and had the following comments:
1. rice  noodles not cooked enough, they were hard and clumped together. Come on now - all you need to do to cook rice noodles is soak them in hot water!
2. the sauce was completely off for Pad Thai and sat in a puddle around the noodles. It didn't taste remotely of tamarind but there was plenty of chili pepper. It almost reminded me of a noodle stack sitting in chili broth.
3. shrimp were rubbery and over cooked.
Maybe I caught this place on an off day, but Pad Thai is a pretty common dish. When there was an authentic Thai restaurant (Bangkok Siam, since closed) directly across the street, I was very confused on all the attention paid to this place.
I would agree that several year's ago that Char Koon was a little secret kept in the heart of South Glastonbury, but since its debut in the mid-1990s, it has really flourished and is known by many to be the best Chinese/Vietnamese/Thai restaurant in town (and one of the best in the Hartford Area).
First of all, I have to tell you that the wonton noodles are handmade from a very thin layer of noodle and then filled with a special blend of ground pork and spices. Â None of the thick noodle with a little hard nugget of pork in the center you find at many other places. Â In addition, the broth is sweet and tastes slightly of honey.
The dinners are great. Â There are many too choose from (and there are dishes labeled as spicy if you like that too).
The restaurant itself is tiny. Â But I have to be honest, you can sit down for lunch if you want, but for dinner, do take-out. Â The service can be very slow if they are busy and from a simple eye comparison, it would appear that they give you more food when you do take-out.
Regardless, skip the take-out out ONLY Chinese places and go to Char Koon. Â Yes you do have to drive down Main Street until you reach Gardener's Market right before hiking over the hill into Portland, but it is worth it if you have the time.
This restaurant is one of S. Glastonbury's best kept secrets....Only 10-12 tables...a tiny little place with wonderful food and marvelous service. Â The menu is pacific rim cuisine. Â You can have Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai - all delicious and beautifully presented. Â You do usually need a reservation for lunch and for dinner.
