The only reason that I'm dropping a rating here is because when I searched for Salsa Dancing in Monterey, this came up as #1. But sadly, the montereysalsa team has ceased their lessons and dance socials at this location. I wish they would start it back up again!! Those were the days!
For now, Salsa dancing in Monterey can be found at the Blue Fin Billiards every Thursday night in the glass room (AKA the Aqua Lounge).
As for the Hall itself, they keep the floor nice, it has a lot of great features. As a dance club, I wish that they would have a more user friendly and updated website. When things change, it's important to keep up on the internet listings so people know what's going on.
If you are visiting the Monterey Peninsula and like to ballroom dance, you must go to Chautauqua Hall on a Saturday night! Â We are so fortunate to have Chautauqua Hall and the Chautauqua Hall Dance Club. Â It's a throw-back to the era of barn dances and when they open the huge windows, it's like dancing under the stars. Â We don't get to go there as often as we'd like because we provide music for weddings which usually occur on Saturday nights, but we go when we can.
Review Source:What? wow! We had our wedding reception here and some of the reasons why we loved it was because it's historical, there are super high vaulted ceilings, a kitchen with a makeshift bar, huge barn like doors that open into the room (but can also be closed) benches all throughout which we decorated with pillows, tables, chairs, a tiered patio outside with 5 benches and a gazebo. We had a "small" gathering of around 120 guests. We had a bluegrass band (awesome local group-Microtonic Harmonic) and then an 80's Dj~ so people could get their groove on. There was room for the super fantastically delicious cake that our friends Kari and Mike made, gift table, photo booth that we created, dancing and food that we had catered from Hula's. We liked that we were able to call the shots with who served the food (friends and Universal Staffing), where we got our alcohol(Costco, Safeway, Wrath, Heller, Tobin James) from, who was doing our Flowers by Petal Unique Designs in Soquel...Anyway you get the idea. Some of the money that you pay for using this great place goes toward keeping it in good shape and is also tax deductible. As far as wedding venues go, I would say this is a little known secret.
It is absolutely perfect for those who want an ambience of austerity mixed with a bit of modern day frivolity in the heart of the "last hometown".
Great place to go ballroom dancing Saturday nights by yourself or with a friend as everyone there is super nice and friendly. Â There's a different dance lesson every week starting at 6:00 pm for those of you who want to learn some new dance steps and then open dancing from 6:45 pm to 10:00 pm. Â Great bargain for only $10 for non-members or $5 for members as there's also a table with yummy snacks in case you need some refueling. Â If you plan on going back for a 2nd time, it's worth getting an annual membership for only $10 as 2 visits will pay for the membership itself. Â Happy dancing!
Review Source:We were walking past Chautauqua Hall on a Saturday night and were drawn in by the sound of swing music. The people who organized the event were nice enough to let us dance to a few songs for free since they were about to wind up.
If you're into social dance, this seems like it could be the highlight of a great weekend getaway. The hall has an old school charm that feels like it's been caught in time. It wasn't very crowded and there was a refreshing ocean breeze flowing through the big barn doors.
Beautiful place to dance, and so many different groups and organizations use it so you can usually find something interesting there every night of the week, Salsa, Swing, Improvisational Dance/Contact Improv.
The most dependable night is Saturday, a mix of different social ballroom dances, starting out with a lesson at 6pm and then dancing begins at 7pm. Â The cost is very affordable for a lesson and a night of dancing, $10 if you're just dropping by, but if you care to come more than two or three times in a year you can get a membership for $15 (I think) and for the rest of the calendar year you get in for $5 per evening. Â Check out the website for more details about admission, membership and the like.
The only reason I give it 4 instead of 5 stars is because it's a little tricky to keep up with what is going on there, I wish they would invest a little money in updating their weekly schedule. Â Saturday nights are dependable, but it's hard to find out what is happening on the other nights, as they are usually being rented out by other dance groups. Â
Currently, I know for sure that there are free salsa dance lessons on Tuesday and Thursday nights starting at 7pm hosted by http://www.montereysalsa… and they are a blast, and they're FREE so what have you got to lose? Also, there is a group that does contact improvisational dancing on Friday nights, I believe, it's a real groovy, hippy, love sort of a scene and the group is very welcoming.
See you there!
