Bucket of steamers is the way to go. Especially when they are in season if that makes sense, or maybe when they are large and fresh. I have had the best luck sticking with the menu recommendations. Bangers and mash is awesome. Drinks and service is great.

Been here many times usually really enjoy the fish and chips and chowder.  This visit was disappointing. Poor service. Waited a long time to be greeted then waited longer to order.  The portion of fish I received very small not the usual and the waitress forgot my chowder.  However still the best bread around. We will be taking a break from  here for a while.

    Three words:  Bucket. of. Steamers.

Don't even think twice or stop to analyze what I've just told you. Just order it. They are absolutely delicious, plentiful, clean and served in a huge bucket with broth and butter for dipping. I've never in my life thought steamers would be something I'd order out at a restaurant but the Chieftain proved me wrong!

This is definitely a fun little pub featuring a variety of beer (and Magners!) on tap and live Irish music on the weekends. A bit small and cramped, and the wait for a table tends to be pretty long, but if you can snag a seat at the bar or if you don't mind waiting/standing, it's a fun place to hang and eat, drink and be merry!

Unfortunate as the food is good but owner/manager is extremely rude. Not my fault they sat two in a large booth just as it was getting busy on st pats. Owner stared at us during our entire meal, came over to ask if we were going to take our drinks to the other side which I guess was ok. Replying no we're just finishing these then leaving must not have been good enough as a minute later he walked by and dropped new place settings to turn the table over on our table as we were still sitting there. I've ate here a few times as the food has always been good, could make excuses for owner as it must be a stressful day but sorry, you are in a service industry, don't make customers feel they're part of a factory assembly line. Try to disguise it a bit better like a good restaurant would.

Excellent pub atmosphere, great service - we always feel like we are appreciated by the staff and owners.

Love the steamers, banger & mash & steak tips. Dinner is always accompanied by Irish Soda bread that is a treat.

Fun for an adults night out and fine for kids too!

Stopped by the Chieftain while attending some training in the area.  I'd have no problem coming back.  As other reviewers have said (and their website shows), it's an Irish restaurant/pub with plenty to choose from on the menu.  I sidled up the smaller bar iin the front of the place and ordered a special from the blackboard - 2 stuffed clams and a cup of chowder for $10.  Came with two slices of their homemade soda bread.  Plenty of brews on draft or a well stocked bar to choose from.  Dinner and two Guinness came to $20.  Wednesday night must be trivia night, cuz the pub section started to get real packed and an EmCee came on testing the microphone.  I'd have no problem coming back.

Who doesn't love a good Irish bar? If you want great food and beer in a cozy atmosphere, this is the place for you. With live music on Friday and Saturday nights, the place is always upbeat and crowded. Beer selection is pretty good and prices are on par with most bars in the area. The bar food is actually pretty good and they have plenty of authentic Irish dishes to choose from. Definitely one of my favorites in the area.

Food and atmosphere are terrific. The owner bartends sometimes and is great. They treat everyone like regulars. Can't say enough about this place.

Very pubby atmosphere, which is what you should expect when you're going to a pub called the Chieftan.

They have Magners on draft and they serve it with ice, the correct way. I had the bucket of steamers. Holy clam! They were perfect, tasted very fresh, hardly any busted or closed ones, if I can remember seeing any.

Great place to go with family or friends.

Solid pub grub.  Nice beer selection.  Don't be a dumb ass, ask for a basket of soda bread; even if you go in for a pint,...ask for the soda bread it's authentic and pleasure rich.

This is one of my favorite local establishments in the area, and it's always a regular stop when I come home to visit.  The steamers are a hit, and the rest of the food is pretty decent, too.  Prices tend to run a bit high, but you never leave hungry, and the service is excellent.  It's usually "seat yourself," and the servers are super quick to greet.  At night, the bar area usually has live entertainment, and the atmosphere is a pretty good time.  Growing up, the places changed hands multiple times, but it has remained the Chieftain for many years, so that says something about the ownership.

Fun Irish pub with great atmosphere.  The food is very solid pub fare (nothing too fancy) but still very good.  I have also heard they have a fun trivia night so might want to check that out. Overall, a fun place!

Second trip to the Chieftain! We tried the Surf and Turf with steak tips. Great scallops and everything is served hot, not Luke warm or cold like some places.
This is a good place to eat. Prices are very reasonable!

Don't go in expecting upscale food, but for a pub, it is some damn good stuff.

The breads seemed fresh baked, seafood was tasty, and the salad was, well, what you'd expect from a salad from a pub.  I just had a craving for greens.
Poured a good pint, and I'd definitely go back if I'm in the area.

I wanted to get the bucket of steamers, but I'll bring a friend when I do that.

ETA: The staff was also terrific... great personable folks.

This might be a 3.5 star joint, but it is different and the atmosphere puts it over the top for me.

Basically an Irish bar with a good size restaurant attached.  The food was ok, but the bar scene was right up my alley.  Definitely worth a shot if you live near by.  It's a few miles south of foxboro so it probably gets overlooked by a lot of people who don't go farther than patriot place.

4 stars for a pub. That is what it is and it isn't trying to be anything else really.  Don't go in here expecting some sort of culinary experience.  Decent basic food is what you will get.  Husband and I both had the Blademeat sandwich and it was nice and spicy.  In laws had club and tuna wrap and they were happy with them. Again, they got basic food not seeking anything fancy. I can never understand people with whacked out expectations for food in a pub.

Now, what bumps this up to 4 stars, atmosphere, friendly staff, and good beer selections.  Gotta go back for the music.

In other words, it is a pretty good Irish pub.

Loved this quaint little Irish Pub! The decor is adorable. The food decent. The beer flowing. They had a live acoustic duo when we checked it out on Friday. We ran into a friend, and I don't know all that many people in the area, so it seemed to be a happening spot. I will be back.

I am so glad I found this place through here. My wife and I were going to the Wrentham outlets and wanted a good place to eat that wasn't a crappy chain. This was the best short drive for lunch we ever took. The food is cheap and soo good. I was disappointed that they were out of clam strips but our waitress suggested I try the pot roast. If I weren't married already, I would have proposed to her after the meal. Their pot roast was incredible. It was also HUGE. I got two big meals out of it. My wife got the fish and chips and it was also large and very good. We will be going back every time we go to the outlets.

Visited the Chieftan Pub for the first time tonight.  This is not a large restaurant, but that just gives it a more authentic feel for a European-style pub.  Even though I don't drink, I almost felt out of place for not having a Guinness in front of me!

The server was very nice, and tolerated my "newbie" questions and answered each one thoughtfully.  Eventually I decided on the Corned Beef and Cabbage platter, which also came with mashed potatoes with a hint of a white gravy.  I have seen others on here complain about the mashed potatoes being "lumpy."  This is also what is called "homestyle" mashed potatoes.  I really don't care for potatoes that have the consistency of pudding, so I enjoyed the ones here.  The corned beef and cabbage were amazing!  The cabbage had a wonderfully seasoned flavor, and was not over-cooked.  The flavor of the corned beef was phenomenal.

This is a location that is definitely worth the time to visit.  Prices are very reasonable, portions are huge, and the quality is very good.

Solid pub grub.  Try the steamers if they have them.  They're served in a huge bucket with onions and sliced chouricio.  No sand and cooked perfectly.  I have always sat in the back area which has a dark Irish pub vibe.  The front part looks more like an Applebee's brightly lit family atmosphere.  The back is pretty small so it can get crowded quickly.  Last time the service wasn't great but other than that I have always had a good experience.

The last time I was here was a few years ago so this is an older review but I was surprised to see it is rated 4 stars. Waitress was nice. Food-gross. Mashed potatoes were undercooked and lumpy, peas were from a can. Stuffed shrimp nasty stuffing. Waitress asked how everything was and I told her that the shrimps stuffing was not good and potatoes were lumpy. The manager came over and asked rudely what the problem is. I told her and she said "First of all you ate most of the shrimp (just not the stuffing) and I tasted the potatoes myself and they're fine so I don't know what you want!" We didn't "want" anything. The waitress asked and I answered honestly. We certainly were not looking for a free meal. We paid tipped waitress 20% and never returned. Food blah, management rude.

We absolutely love the Chieftain! Excellent food, great beer, good music, nice staff! What more can I say? If available, get a bucket of steamers - they never disappoint! Visit and enjoy!

I grew up in Plainville, yet for some reason I always forget about the Chieftain.  I need to make it a point to remember that this place is great!  We ended up here last night after a failed attempt at getting dinner at Doherty's in Pawtucket (it was at least an hour wait and we were starving).  We took a quick drive back up 95 to try and find something near home.  I was trying to think if there were any other Irish pubs, and remembered the Chieftain!

They have a good selection of draft beer, and MAGNERS ON TAP, *SQUEAL*!  I will definitely be going here more often now that I've realized they serve liquid happiness!  We were seated fairly quickly and our orders were promptly taken by our server (a bit too quickly even... we had to send her away twice because we still hadn't decided).  We got an order of buffalo wings for an app, which were quite delicious!  Boyfriend got fish and chips, which he seemed pleased with, and I got the bangers and mash.  They were probably the closest thing I've found to the bangers and mash I had in Ireland.  In other words, they were fantastic!

I didn't have them during this visit, but I feel obligated to comment on the bucket of steamers at the Chieftain.  They serve the best steamers I have ever eaten in my life here!  I'm not sure if they still do a special price on them on Mondays, but I'd say they are well worth it even at full price!  They are perfectly seasoned and simply to-die-for!

My trip to the ladies room was unexpectedly very pleasant!  As I squeezed my way through the bar area, I saw that the restrooms were located in a little hallway next to the back entrance.  I thought to myself "I hope it's not freezing in there!"  The gender signs were in Gaelic, and I pondered them briefly before realizing one had a picture of a little boy peeing in a bucket and the other, a girl in a bathtub.  I chose the door to the right.  It's a single occupant, kept extremely clean, with a very warm heater right next to the toilet.  Toasty buns!  The toilet paper dispenser was also located right over the heater, making it pleasantly warm!  Do they make toilet paper warmers?  If not, they should!!! Although, Boyfriend reported that the men's room was quite the opposite of toasty, as someone had left the window open and it was close to 0 degrees outside.  But they're tougher and don't have to expose their bare bottoms to the elements whilst peeing, at least.

Note to self: go to the Chieftain more often!!!

Soda bread is awesome.  Great steamers with onions and chourico mixed in for a nice flavor.  Great beer selection and specials daily.  Way croweded on the weekend, plan ahead!

Here is one of those times I wish there was a 3 1/2 star option, because that is what the Chieftain is. 4 star pub, 3 star restaurant.

I have eaten here a few times, gotten some apps, a shrimp dish and few other basics and they were pretty good, perhaps slightly overpriced.

The bar on weekends is a blast, perfectly poured Guinness, live music; authentic decor on the walls makes for a good time. Limited bar seating though, and it often fills up (and clears out) pretty quickly.

Worth a trip to head over, get some pretty authentic Irish food in a great pub atmosphere.

While I've never been to the Chieftain on a weekend, I've been there Monday nights numerous times.  The decor is interesting, a conversation piece.  This Irish pub has a great atmosphere, and though the it might take a few tries to get the waitress's attention, they are pleasant and generally willing to help. They have a great beer selection and pub fare.  The bread they bring to the table is delicious, too, you'll want to ask for more.

Go on Monday nights for the $14 steamer buckets.  I could never finish a whole bucket myself, they're great to share.

I also heard that they got approval for an outdoor patio in the back, which I'll definitely be back to check out!

Great pub with a decent atmosphere, fairly good pub fare, and excellent service. The beer selection is good and they serve it the correct way: expect to wait for your Guinness, expect the beer to be slightly colder than cellar temp, and expect the bartender/waitress to be busy, but efficient and friendly. If you come when it's a peak meal time, you might have to wait for a table. If you come during St. Pat's Day, you might have to wait until next year.

I feel the pain of the reviewer that had a bad burger, I've had a couple overcooked ones here. However, the fish and chips, blade meat sandwich, and of course - steamers are excellent. The only problem I have with the steamers is that they seem to be $1 more every time I come in...though they haven't gotten too expensive to be worth it so far.

My first trip to the Chieftain Pub prompted me to finally register for Yelp and write a review.

A small and unassuming place, The Chieftain is an irish themed pub with solid food for very reasonable prices. You can pick up standard pub far like burgers or go for classic UK choices like Fish and Chips or Bangers and mash.

The fish and chips were perfect. Very light batter served crispy and hot.  The Clam Chowder and Clam cakes are also worth noting.

We left before the live music began, but the line out the door was a pretty good idicator that this is the place to be on a Saturday night.

My only knock is the place fills up fast and quickly overwhelms the cooling system. Prepare to be cozy and a little warm.

Boring and bland, The Cheiftan brings to you a limited assortment of mediocre fare for the price you would pay for such food.
You can wash the dismal food down with a cool, overly carbonated beer in a hot glass, your choice of a dismal, limited selection of bottled and tap faves.
Twice I went. Twice it sucked. I wanted so bad to give this place a good rating but it is not in the stars. It's not a pisshole by any standard, Generations took the cake ont that one and has since shriveled and flaked off. (Thank God!!!) That place was a haven for drunks who lived within walking distance. Walking distance not because of a sense of responsibility by not driving drunk, but by driving drunk and losing their licence. You can chuck a rock at all the halfway houses from there.

Fitzy's or A&J's may be better if you're into flavorless un-food and tepid beer.

Best damn potato skin appetizer I've ever had.  I'm pretty sure someone actually sliced up fresh potatoes in the back for our order.

That said, my friend and I ordered the Dublin Chicken Pasta and Bangers 'n' Mash.

The pasta was $12 and pretty good.  The Bangers and Mash (and free bread) reminded me of food I'd eaten in Ireland.  The mashed potatoes were great, I'd bet they were made from boiled potatoes and not bags or boxes.

All in all, priced right and certainly worthy of a stop.  Their website has the menu.

We have a friend who was born and raised in Ireland and swears by this place.  The soda bread is made daily by one of the owners (who is indeed from Ireland).  It's some of the best bread I have ever eaten...EVER.  And I eat a lot of bread!

There aren't many options for a vegetarian, but I was able to ask for a pasta dish without meat.  It wasn't really that good, but I'm still giving it four stars because this place is Irish not Italian and I really can't judge it on the quality of their pasta!

The prices are very reasonable.  The atmosphere is cozy.  It's kind of a drive, but definitely worth it if you're in the mood for real bangers & mash!

Doesn't take long for this place to fill up.  But it does so because it's good.

I love their Sheppard Pie...and if you like a little heat, the Blade Meat Sandwich is great.

They have some good beers on tap, the only way it should be had...

Music on the weekends, so get in early or there's no where to sit.

I stopped in here last night for steamers (steamed clams) and baked stuffed shrimp. Outstanding! Huge bucket (like you'd use for washing the floor) of clams for only $22.95, served with butter and broth. (Back in California, if we can find steamers, we get about 12 clams for about $12.00.) The baked stuffed shrimp (something else that we can't get in California) came with four delicious large shrimp with a tasty bread/seafood stuffing. Other times I've had baked stuffed at other places, they were swimming in butter. Not here. There was just enough butter for flavor, but the shrimp weren't the least bit greasy.

The place was a little bit loud for my taste, but it is an Irish pub. The front area is a little bit quieter than the bar.

Straightforward pub with no frills and no really good reasons to go here other than perfunctory sustenance or a place to watch a game on TV.  Stopped here for lunch and was relatively unimpressed with the food.

Your Irish pub outside of Boston. Might not be a Kinsale or Black Rose, but out here in No Man's Land...it's the next best thing.

I've gone for lunch and have not had the opportunity to hit the live bands or jammin' weekend evenings. So I can only share my friends experience and I've heard it's a "wild" time.

For lunch, I LOVE their buffalo wings. The fried clams with bellies is a hit or miss b/c sometimes the bellies are too big and can be nasty taking down even fried. Almost like a prego clam going south if you know what I mean.

Their drafts are irish dedicated with guiness and o'hara's so extra stars for their selection of beer.

Chieftain's is a great Irish pub to eat, drink and be merry.  Great food but it's a very small place so it gets crowded very early.  There are live bands on the weekends so it's also a great place to go for a Guinness or two once you can find a place to sit or stand.  When I lived in this area, my friends from Boston would only come out to visit if I promised to take them here.  We would always have a lot of fun and they were obsessed with the Chieftain's smothered steak tips.  My father loves their fried seafood platter.
