I have been coming to Chincoteague for the past five years and never been to this restaurant. When my in-laws suggested this place I was all in for some good seafood. My father in-law just warned me about the service being a hit or miss.
We arrived to the restaurant which seemed a little empty for a July Saturday night but it was 5:30 so I overlooked the fact. The whole restaurant you has a view of the water which is nice. We waited about 5 minutes before the waitress came over to take our drink orders. We all ordered water to keep it simple for her who told us she had been there since 10. After another 5 minutes of waiting we received our drinks and place our orders. My father in law order the stuff flounder with fries and side salad. My wife and her mother ordered the crab imperial corn on the cob with a salad.
The waitress allowed us to use the buffets salad bar so we can build our salad. After looking at the buffet and seeing other customers face I was glad we were just getting the salad off the bar. The salad bar was basic and nothing to brag about. I began to talk to a lady at the salad bar and she told me I should be happy that I didn't get the salad bar because it was all cold.
I returned to my seat waited for a while before the waitress came over in our area when my mother in-law asked her for a pitcher of water which was the best option at the time. The crazy thing about this whole meal was that other customers around us was being taken care of and we were being over looked. Other tables were getting cornbread and drinks regularly. Our food and cornbread came to us at the same time, while the other family behind us was finishing up their meal. We had to tell the waitress we order fries not potatoes and we were missing a corn on the cob. The cornbread muffins were excellent along with the fresh cut boardwalk fries. The flounder was average. They use the imperial mix in a lot of their items and it wasn't anything special. My wife said her corn was horrible after biting into it and my mother law confirmed My wife crab imperial was moist which she enjoyed but my mother in-law's was dry. When we finished our meal we informed the waitress we wanted the check. It took us over 15 minutes to get our check. The buss boy kept us entertain by telling us all of the new kitchen rumors.
Overall our whole experience was bland. The service was absolute worst and the food wasn't anything special. Hearing all the gossip from the staff was by far the highlight of our meal. I think they should think about switching the buss boy to the wait staff.

We've been to CI many times over the last 4 years. Yes it's not pretty, yes it's not that fancy, but they have the best food I've had in the area. The locals, the employees, and the 2 begging ducks are great. To bad they are going to tear it down soon. It will be a Chincoteague lose. My heart goes out to all the tourist, locals, emplyees, and my friends who love this place. Progress is not always the best for Chincoteague!

My boyfriend and I decided to try the buffet here for dinner earlier this month. When we walked in, I was slightly concerned that the place seemed slow on a Wednesday night in mid-August, and the staff had that bored look to them, but we persisted because someone had told us the buffet was good.

Considering how nice the location is--the dining room is right on the bay, and there are large windows with lovely views at sunset-- this place should be packing people in during the summer. Now I know the reason is because the food is just mediocre.

Some good things: the server was super friendly, and we ordered a decent bottle of white wine for under $20. But when it came to the seafood buffet, it was just sort of unremarkable. The steamed clams had no flavor, the crab legs were just okay, and the fried oysters and fried shrimp had been left sitting out in this steamer dish so that the breading was pale, soggy and bloated. The food wasn't exactly BAD, but for $28.99 I was expecting fresh, local seafood with some zing to it. The only exception on the buffet was, strangely, the prime rib, which was tender, perfectly cooked, and flavorful.

Another weird thing I noticed is that they had a radio station on during dinner, with all the talking and commercials! I mean, really? You can't shell out for dinner music for your customers? So weird.

We still managed to have a nice time, since we were on vacation and in relaxation mode, but I probably wouldn't return.

Where can you hang out with skeezy Army guys, Salt Water Cow Boys and salty watermen? THIS PLACE!!

This is definitely the local dive. We were here on a week night and all sorts of people came out for a good meal and drink. If you come to this place, you would be crazy for not getting any sea food. We started with some Raw Chincoteague Oysters that were fresh and tasty. Then we got some Yuenglings and ordered the sea scallops and the fish of the day Flounder. OMG it was so fresh! There was nothing fancy about the food, but it was super fresh.

In addition to the dive atmosphere of this place, the bar deck faced West. You know what that means..AWESOME sunsets! You got it.....you should plan to get over here and get a table outside and watch the sunset. It's romantic in a

After dinner we moved into the bar and had a couple with some of the locals. The bartender was such a sweet heart and the locals there were so much fun to talk to. Too bad we weren't here for Karaoke night, it would have been awesome to see some of the old people get up there and rock it.

This is definitely a place for the locals and not the place for yuppies.

LOVE IT!

This place is a complete sh**hole. I love it. Outdoor seating, middle-aged folk smoking reds, wearing cutoff t-shirts, doing shots and hitting on teenagers. And big steamed shrimp with outdoor seating on the dock with a view of the sunset! THIS is Chincotague!

Old and kind of run down place. The staff was great and the menu decent. Reasonably priced and healthy portions. Its on the water so that's a bonus as well.

id give this place 5 stars as a place to go at sunset to grab a cheap beer on a not-pretentious deck bar.
id give the restaurant 3 stars, but only cuz it took 17 years to get service @ our table and the food was decent.
averages out to 4 stars. i will definitely go back when i return to chincoteague because it was easy to get to with cheap beers and funny live music.
to say nothing of the PRIME view.
id pay for the view alone. and tolerate the sub-par service...

Imagine a brown girl and a Nigerian girl in Chincoteague, Virginia, where some houses have confederate flags raised high. Now imagine those two girls trying to find a suitable, welcoming place to party on this 5 by 2 mile island on a Saturday night...

We asked some locals at the carnival, which felt like the set of 1972 horror film, if there were any places for dancing. One place, Ray's Shanty went ablaze this past Wednesday and was closed due to the fire! hahahah, sad. The other recommended place was the Chincoteague Inn, not to be confused with Chincoteague Inn Motel just a few blocks away.

Much to our surprise, we had a BLAST at the Chincoteague Inn. The reasons I give this place a 4 star instead of a 5 is because 1) I can't speak to the food since I didn't order any and 2) one female bar tender was a super bitch, but they're never nice to other women, are they?

With that said, everything else about this place was perfect. It is right on the water and the ambiance is simply gorgeous. There's lots of outdoor seating. It's also quite literally the only party place on the island (we later found out that Ray's Shanty was off of the Island). The locals knows one another, yet still, they are welcoming to the tourists who visit Chincoteague to see their 4-legged pony friends!

Also, a band called the Mid-Life Crisis was playing and customers of all ages were dancing the night away. The band was phenomenal! Check them out: http://mlcband.net/homep…

Growing up around competitive cities, it isn't often that I am able to visit rural America. Chincoteague Inn was a humbling experience as I listened to the stories people told and saw the joy in the eyes of the musicians who were all over 50 years old. Contentment comes in many beautiful forms! Definitely visit Chincoteague Inn if you get a chance and maybe it will bring you a little bit of happiness too :)

I came with a large group to this restaurant. The waitstaff looked very upset when we arrived, and I didn't really feel welcomed. The waitresses weren't too bad, but I just felt like an inconvenience to them.

The food wasn't good. I ordered a 1/2 dozen raw oysters and the club sandwich. I only ate two oysters. I've had them before, and it's always a bit nerve-wracking for me to eat raw seafood, but these oysters just frightened me. The club sandwich had so much meat on it that I had to take most of the meat off. There wasn't much else on the sandwich either. The fries were cold and soggy. Looking at the food that the rest of my group was eating, I don't think that they had any better luck with their meals.

We were seated on the back porch area, which made me feel like I was at some dive bar. This ambiance was completed different from the inside - are they trying to attract two different types of crowds? Perhaps the food and service would have been better inside? I'll never know.

Been here a dozen times or so over 20 years. Good location for the most part. Food is just OK, I remember coming here as a kid and it was better, but still not a bad place.

Salads and sides were very no frill and plain. The main course was good though.

They have an attached bar and is only one a few on the island, it too is just OK.

I gave this place 2 chances and was disappointed both times. First time I had the seafood boats. The cheese was way overcooked, almost burned. Very crispy, not at all gooey and melty. I was bummed. Burnt cheese is no fun.
Second time I had crab legs. I was given a nut cracker and a knife along with a plastic fork. The nut cracker wouldn't work well because the shell of the crabs were like rubber. I cut myself with the knife and couldn't use a plastic fork to get out the meat without fear of it breaking. By the time I got through one set of legs my butter was all congealed and solid. It would have been nice, especially since everything there is overpriced of they used a burner to keep the butter warm.
I won't ever go back. The food is mediocre at best and way too expensive for what you get. The only saving grace are the stiff drinks, which are also overpriced.

The food was mostly overcooked (the crab cake and softshell crab sandwiches were purchased, alone with a dozen hushpuppies). The outside bar was noisy, which was completely to be expected, however, the cleanliness was much to be desired. We waited for about twenty for our waitress to come over before the host who seated us was kind enough to ask our drink order since he realized she had yet to come by. Upon arrival of the food, my boyfriend requested another beer. It didn't come until we asked for our check. At this point, he didn't even want it, but it was a $2 beer, so what the hell? He just chugged it.

I suggest bringing bug spray with you. But mostly, I suggest finding another place to eat.

***Note: This is a review on the outside desk bar only. The inside of the restaurant looked very clean.

Good fun for sunset drinks and late night entertainment. We ended up here on Toga Thursday with the local radio DJ. Food was ok. Server was sweet enough but knew NOTHING about the menu or bar. Don't expect a lot, let loose, and you'll have a good time. Sunset is amazing!

Verrry slow service on a Thursday night around 7:30 and the place wasn't that busy. We sat outside at the end of the dock. The view was peaceful but don't wear nice clothes there. Seagulls loiter and plan an attack. We witnessed 2 actually fly right in the window and steal food off some poor womans plate! It just seems dirty to me. Crab Imperial was so very good. Husbands clam strips were fat and really good. I doubt we will return there this week though. Just something about the place we didn't love.

OK, this review will be done in phases... like my experience at this facility.

Phase I - "The Ambiance"

Ate out on the deck and had a couple of "colbeers" whilst watching the sunset over the bay -not bad, sailor! While throwing said colbeers down the hatch, we listened to a couple of older dudes play their best renditions of "Grateful-Buffet" ditties throughout... it's basically required listening after a long day consisting of taming wild ponies and wondering how a few grains of sand remained in yer crack after an intense showering session...

Phase II: "The Meal"

Crab cakes were good... and I know my crab cakes. Oysters were gritty but that is the chance you take with eating on the half shell. It's like nature's casino with oysters... sometimes you hit the jackpot and sometimes you get hepatitis A.

Phase III: "The Service"

Well, the manager was great... but mainly because our server didn't exist. He did recognize that and hooked us up with a free round of drinks because she sucked so bad (the server)....and to top it off, she stood there with the check pretty much looking over my shoulder as I wrote in a shitty tip.

All and all, I'd go back and probably order the same damn thing and probably get the same low-rent server... but as long as the manager gave me a free couple of bevys, I'd make do.

Thank God that the real estate market tanked or this place would be history by now. The last I heard it was under contract and scheduled to be demolished to be replaced by condos. but that was two years ago. The indoor restaurant is nice enough. My wife and I have settled on dinner and sometimes lunch on the outdoor deck and bar. Very casual as you would expect. Decent burgers and some better seafood. Service is OK. The view from the deck across the bay is great. Love the place. The bar is called P.T. Pelican's Intercoastal Deck Bar.

Fresh tasting seafood and friendly, if overworked, staff. No great culinary visionaries in the kitchen, but they can grill a decent crabcake. Great views; you can see the fishing boats come in while you eat.

Chincoteague Inn has a major stamp of approval from the navy guys at Navair. We come here to catch lunch or dinner or to catch a couple of brews. The bartenders are fun and have a great attitde. If you heckle them they'll heckle you back and even when things are slow its still a good time. The food is good and the prices arent bad. They have one of the best burgers that I've had in quite a while and their crab soup is delicious.

The place fills up on Mondays for their poker night and also when they have a band or have open mic nights. All in all this is a fun place to either grab a bite to eat or to just hang out and watch the tides change while sipping a ice cold beer.
