Hands down the BEST place for AMAZING grub and craft-beer in Hampton Roads! Another Yelper (Angie K.) recommended that I check this place out.
**If you do stop by do not park at the church across the street!**
Upon walking in my friend and I decided to sit up at the bar, where we met Jenny. After she introduced herself she informed us of all the beers that they had on tap and that if we needed anything else, just too ask. After looking over the beer menu which is pretty extensive, Jenny offered us suggestions based on the beer the type of beer we drank and also offer us several samples of the different beers on tap. After deciding on a local O'Conner's (El Guapo) beer we decided to get some grub. I think the fact that they have their menu up on blackboards all over the restaurant brings out the CHOW's uniqueness. I decided to go with the Salisbury steak after the many good reviews on Yelp.
The steak came out covered in sautéed red and green peppers and my two sides were collard greens and sweet potato mash both of which were great, quite possibly the best Salisbury steak I've ever had. For dessert Jenny and I got talking about some great dark dessert beers, after I had brought it up. We ended up having two samples one of each Blue Mountain Barrel House and the Breckenridge Vanilla Porter and called it dessert.LoL.
**Overall, I'm finally happy to call CHOW's my place of choice in all Norfolk and Virginia Beach when looking for great American Craft-beer. It kind of stinks that the drive is a little far, when I reside in VaBeach, but it's TOTALLY worth it. Also a big shout out to the bartender Jenny for her IMMENSE knowledge about not only the beer they have in bottles or on tap but the several others as well. When she started talking about ABV's and IBU's, I knew I found a place that knows how to speak the language of beer. Cheers!!
This place was amazing. It was recommended to me by another local and I was not disappointed. There is a huge selection of beers from all over, and a huge variety of foods. I split the Fried Chicken with another person, which came with sweet cornbread, and we got macaroni and cheese and I think mashed potatoes, as well. The servers seemed to be a little preoccupied, but it didn't take away from their friendliness.
All the foods are unique, and I would recommend trying something different when you go. The price will run you a little higher than usual, but if you're looking for good food and good beer, this is a place you don't want to miss out on.
Went here for dinner for the first time last week. It is a small establishment with limited parking but ample street parking. There is an outdoor patio that was unfortunately not available for outdoor seating the day we went. My date and I sat at the bar and were greeted with one of the friendliest bartenders I had ever met (her name was Jenny). The beer selection on tap alone was pretty extensive. They also offer one of smartmouth brewery's beers (a local brewery I have recently learned about), which was delicious. The place gives off a cute, clean, diner-type feel to it. Reiterating what other yelpers have said, their menus are all written on the walls. They also offer specials on a daily basis too. I ended up getting the cornmeal fried local oysters + edamame succotash and mac and cheese. The food came out fairly quickly. The oysters were great, lightly battered and didn't taste like the sea at all. I would say that they give an above average portion of food. My date ordered a burger, and it came pretty stacked. I didn't try it, but he said it was good, so I will have to take his word for it.
The place got busy throughout the dinner, but the conversation always remained at normal volume level. Service was spectacular, and Jenny was always attentive but not too encroaching during the meal.
Overall, I had a pleasant experience. They claim to serve southern food, but they add a few twists to their dishes to make them a little bit different. They use less breading, and the food isn't as oily. I didn't ever feel like I was going to get sick after eating my meal (something that normally happens when I eat real southern cooking). Would I come back again? Definitely. Would I tell other people about this place? Of course.
