So the complaints I have read about this place are regarding the lack of plentiful restrooms, dark decor, music and smokiness. Have any of you ever even been to another cigar bar in your lives? I really doubt it.
Show me a bright, loud, fresh aired cigar bar and I will show you an out of business sign. That is what cigar bars are. Go drink at a restaurant if that bothers you.
The cigar selection downstairs is good. Not amazing, but definitely had 4 or 5 of my favorites.
The decor upstairs is dark, the seats are leather and comfortable, and the service was great.
I had a bottle of Chimay Blue with an Oliva V. Just perfect. Actually left at 10pm to go to the next bar, and ended up back at around 11 because we liked it so much.
Great spot.
Club Habana is of a dying breed. It's an old-fashioned cigar shop with a country-club style bar and lounge upstairs. The lounge includes several different rooms, each with a slightly different atmosphere. The lighting was low throughout, without being too dark, which worked perfect with the dark wood floors. The bartenders take care in making their cocktails, using fresh and high-quality ingredients to produce wonderfully balanced beverages.
I can't wait until my next trip to Charleston so I can return to Club Habana.
It's a mellow, laid-back kinda hangout for those who enjoy a good smoke with their friends. It's not too bright inside and provides a cozy atmosphere to carry on conversations. The music's not too loud, but it wasn't always great. It makes you wanna go to sleep especially after you've caught a buzz already. The smoke shop downstairs offers a variety of smokes: from cigar smokers to cigarette smokers. They even have tobacco for pipe smokers. You don't have to smoke to come here. You can just hang out with your friends and enjoy a drink or four.
Review Source:A must for any cocktail enthusiast. They have all the great ingredients here and they cut no corners. As there is no subsitute for fresh juices and proper bitters in cocktails, Club Habana does not compromise. The bartender and wait staff was friendly and knowledgeable, and the furnishings were quite comfortable. The fact that you can smoke a delicious cigar here (the only joint of its kind in Charleston) is a nice plus. At night people seem to want to get very friendly with each other, so if you're not of the European minded (i.e. lap dancing in public), you may want to stick to the Happy Hour set.
Review Source:The store down stairs is setup good but the bar area upstairs leaves a lot to be desired. I seems the took a house and made it into a bar. The problem is they did not upgrade the restrooms nor the size of the restrooms to meet the expansion. If you gonna make a cigar bar geared mainly to guys, why is their only one bathroom and if it is full you have to go downstairs to visit the restroom. I felt like I was at my grandmas house minus the cookies!
The on a busy night like when I was there the drinks flow pretty slow, so sip it don't drink it.
Pretty cool place, very low key and dark in some rooms. Â Very nice and helpful waitress (as well as nice to look at!). Â It's a cool, relaxed place to enjoy a nice drink and a nice cigar. Â A bit expensive for drinks, but when you are in the heart of downtown, I'm sure you've got to charge a little more to cover your bills.
Review Source:The evening I visited Club Habana was due to a very underwhelming bachelor party ending very early on a Saturday evening. I decided I wasn't going to turn in because I only had one Saturday to spend in Charleston. I had been told of a cigar bar in the downtown area, and with a quick phone call for directions, I was on my way. A few blocks later, I was standing in a shop with all of it's walls lined with humidors. In short, I was home. A few inquiries later and I had purchased a cigar from The Tinderbox and was making my way up the stairs to Club Habana which as it turns out is A LOT like someone's house if they converted it into scotch and cigar bar.
The entire place is very dimly lit, which works if you bring some friends or more appropriately a special someone with you. However, I was by myself so I went to sit at the bar. Only trouble was that there was a bachelorette party going on and there were no seats at the bar. I decided to order a scotch and just wander around a bit. The bartender wasn't rude or anything but not overly friendly either. And the scotch was expensive. While I realize that scotch ordered at a bar is generally going to put me back a bit, the prices at Club Habana were even more than I am used to paying.
However, with scotch in hand and cigar in mouth, I started wandering around. I said it already, this place is a lot like someone's house converted into a bar. There are many rooms, each with large overstuffed chairs and couches in smallish rooms. I felt kind of strange just walking around so I finally took a seat on a couch only to realize that there were waitresses wandering around. I guess it was a good thing that I had ordered at the bar so that I realized what my drink cost instead of opening a tab with a waitress and winding up spending a shit-ton of money in a relatively short amount of time.
The atmosphere here was nice and intimate but since I was alone I just watched the other groups, huddled together in conversation or plotting bank robberies (In the low light and high ambient noise, it is hard to tell exactly what is going on). It wasn't a bad bar, but just not what I was looking for that evening, so when my scotch had been drained, I went ahead and cleaned up after myself and took the glass back to the bar and then left, taking my unfinished cigar with me out into the downtown. So yeah, I was that weird guy in a lamb skin pea-coat walking around trying to convince everyone that a cigar is just a cigar. Really, it's just a cigar. Go away Mr. Freud, I am not talking to you any more.
I did return to The Tinderbox the following morning for my cigar purchasing as I didn't want to have to walk around with a bag full of cigars the previous evening. I then found out that the shop has a small supply of pre-embargo Cubans that are pretty inexpensive. And the guy working there was really nice and helpful in finding me cigars that I would like and suggested some smokes that I probably wouldn't have otherwise tried.
I liked the place but wished I had taken someone with me. Do not go here by yourself, it just isn't worth it and you wind up feeling kind of sleazy just wandering around watching other people interact. However, it seems like a great place to take a date. The drink prices are high but the cigar prices are fairly low so it kind of evens out. And the service staff is helpful enough. All in all, if you are in town and like cigars, this is definitely a place you are going to have to stop by.
Club Habana is supposed to be "Charleston's Upscale Martini and Wine Bar." Â To me, it was more like a sketchy smoky upstairs rooms. Â
Club Habana is tucked away on the second floor of the Tinder Box Internationale tobacco store. Â The bartender was really nice but we were too scared to stay. Â There were only a couple of old men there smoking cigars and prob drinking scotch.
Like Juliana says, this place makes you feel like you know a secret, because you have to go through a cigar shop to get to the bar. Â Upstairs, it's like you're drinking in someone's really well-decorated house, because it's divided into rooms that feel that way. Â Diverse drink menu is fun. Â Dress up a little- you'll feel more comfortable with a little class!
Review Source:i don't know what's got into me. maybe the fact that this site is so underground that only 2 people will read this (oh who am i kidding? it'll just be me rereading my own review), maybe it's that i haven't had my coffee yet and am technically asleep, or that i'm experiencing odd pangs (that some call generosity); whatever it is, i've decided to share one of my favorite places: club habana. you have to walk inside and up the stairs of a cigar shop whose name escapes me now, but i think "cigar shop" suffices, since there's only one in charleston, on meeting across from the market, and in a few dimly-lit, well-ventilated, high-ceilinged rooms, there's this cigar bar - in my opinion, charleston at its finest. the cocktails are delicious and almost affordable (around $8), the waitstaff is friendly, and if you smoke cigars or cigarettes, they're just downstairs.
