Maybe it is because I am living in New York that I found the staff friendly ;)
I also think that the bakery is in a great shape being clean and well stocked with a million things you might to add to your food, like mustard and tabasco.
A well organized and welcoming place, especially if you compare it with NYC style delis which often are plain dirty.
If you are visiting Chicago and you look for good breakfast or snacks this a great place. I had the "Anaheim" scrumbeld eggs which came with Avocado and were just delicious. And I am really picky with eggs, usually.
All the baked products looked great, too.
Tea was from "Mighty Leaf" which is quality tea, coffee was nothing special but very ok. Many healthy choices like juices and yoghurt are available, too.
I liked the Cafe-feeling sitting at the round Parisian style marble tables. They took efforts decorating and hung historic pictures of Chicago & some mural-like art work which I liked. On a Saturday a relaxed atmosphere, good food and good service.
Only con: Plastic plates - not nice and not green at all.
Apart or a chain not bad at all & very ok priced (again, I am used to NYC pricing, so it is possible that my judgment on prices is screwed).
I recommend the place.
I went to Corner Baker this morning, at about 7:30am. Lillian was a real bitch. She didn't smile and when I asked for the $2.99 special, she asked: Is that coffee large or small?? The small comes with the special, letting me know she doesn't have good listening skills.
The perk came when a man on a cane, cleaned up the coffee dispensing section and greeted everyone with great enthusiasm. I didn't get his name, but he balanced out Lillian's inactivity.
