Great brunch on Sundays comes with a complimentary drink! Totally pub status which I love. Seriously good french onion soup (which is hard to find these days) the house made bloody mary mix is amazing! They are also known for their chowder too! Def. a good spot to get your grub a lub on.
Review Source:I love this place :)
I'm a vegetarian and you'd think I'd be pretty uncomfortable at a pub that has (you guessed it) pub food.
On the contrary! Â The Corner Pug has a handful of vegetarian-friendly dishes that are impeccable.
I've honestly NEVER had a bad dish here - any veggies are always perfectly cooked and seasoned. Â I've had a few dishes here - from the Mac and Cheese (totally inspired, the kind you dream about), to a Portobello Sandwich, to their Zen Burger. Â Their waffle fries are to die for. Â Seriously, I've never had a bad dish at the Pug.
As far as drinks, they have a really good selection, what with being a pub.  I tend to get wine when I come here.  For dessert - there's only one dessert one ought to get:  the Crème brûlée.  It's absolute perfection at the Pug. Â
The only downside is that I've found a few of the female members of the wait staff can be pretty unfriendly. Â But I can deal, as long as I get my yummy food.
All things considered, this is a great place to get delicious, hot, hearty food that feeds your soul without being gout-inducing.
The Pug photos are adorable. Â If you haven't yet been to the Pug, it's time.
My daughter, husband and I went for dinner on a Friday night. We have driven by many times and were excited to try it based on reviews I've read. My daughter had the meatloaf, which she said was very good. My husband tasted it and agreed it was good. Unfortunately, the dinners he and I got were sub-par. I tried the pot roast, which tasted like it had been sitting around for days. It was dried out and tasted old. The vegetables that came with it were good, however. My husband tried the surf and turf special. The surf was a couple of deep fried scallops. He was unaware the seafood would be deep fried and that certainly would have made him think twice about ordering it. The beef was average. No special flavor and it didn't seem to be what we consider filet mignon, although it was advertised as such. The only bright side to our dinners were the beer and wine we ordered. Luckily, I had a Groupon which saved us $15. That is the only redeeming factor about our dinner. I really wanted it to be better; perhaps it was a bad night for the restaurant. We enjoyed the ambiance inside. Unfortunately, I do not plan to go back. There are many other restaurants in West Hartford that I prefer.
Review Source:This brunch was deplorable. Aside from the adorable pug decor in this place the only thing left to enjoy was the blood Marys. The wait to have our orders taken was along, a well as writing for the food and refills. The server nerve came to see when we needed the slip... did I mention the whole place was empty except for our party of 7? Â Wouldn't go back even if I had a gift card... PS- they also gave our vegan a hard time about asking for a bloody mary to be made without worcestershire sauce bc they had a mix they used? but the bar was dead and tere were two bartenders there when we came in??
Review Source:The Corner Pug has it all. Good beer? Yes. Delicious vegetarian options? Yes. Amazing non-veggie pub fare? Heck yes. Pugs, pugs, and more pugs? Oh yeah!
I adore this pub.
Chris and I popped in last night for dinner. He took advantage of their Monday/Tuesday night Prime Rib Dinner special. For $15.99, he got a 16oz. steak, mashed potatoes and creamed spinach. He was in steak heaven for sure. He ordered it medium-rare, but would change his order to rare in the future (which will be soon!) as their medium-rare is a bit too done for his taste. We actually ran into some friends there who said they frequent the Pug just for this special on Mondays and Tuesdays.
I didn't even have to look at the menu. The Corner Pug has a signature dish that I am absolutely in love with. Their Roasted Vegetable Platter is a vegetarian's dream come true. Normally veggies over rice do not wow me. However, the Pug does it in a way that is truly spectacular. Broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, and purple onions are roasted and tossed in truffle oil, and served over a brown basmati wild-rice pilaf. It arrives perfectly salted and seasoned straight out of the kitchen, and I always finish every last bite.
We also had a round of Ten Pennys. I love myself a good Ten Penny, and it always earns a place bonus points when they have it on tap. Oh, and before dinner the Pug serves you a mini loaf of delicious white country bread that is warm and fresh.
If you love a good pub, with excellent food, the Corner Pug is going to be your new favorite spot. As a pug owner myself, I also get a kick out of the pug photos that are everywhere!
Side note: If you have a pug, you are welcome to bring in a framed photo of your little love and they will gladly add it to their collection!
We've been here half a dozen times and made our most recent visit yesterday for an early dinner. As usual, we had a very nice meal, although the service was a bit off.
We were seated without a wait and ordered a few beers (Spaten October and a Longtrail) for a super reasonable $4 each. Our food order was a Cajun Burger ($9.59), Grilled Chicken Sandwich ($7.99), cup of chicken veggie soup ($3.59) and an order of mussels ($9.99).
The soup was excellent - a small dice of many different vegetables and chicken cubes in a very tasty broth. Not weak and watery, but delicious. The mussels were great - 29 good ones and 1 bad one in a clear broth with diced tomatoes and garlic, served with 2 slices of garlic toast. The dish was served with a glass bowl over it- so it looked like an astronaut helmet. The bowl was for the shells of course. I tried some of the waffle fries that came with the sandwiches and they were really good.
Service? Well, it wasn't high up on the charts. At the end of the meal, we noticed everyone in the dining room was served bread and butter as a starter except us. Was that because we didn't order a real "entrée"? I doubt it. Our server didn't check to see how we liked our food until it was almost gone. No offers to re-beer. No offers for coffee or dessert, instead a weirdly curt "I see you're ready for your check". If I was her manager, I'd be pissed that she wasn't trying to upsell. And her personality matched her service.
Oh well, the Pug is still a cool place, and I was able to sneak some looks at the Rangers-Bruins game too.
I've always seen this little corner restaurant, but finally stopped in one night for dinner, and have been back once after for a lunch. The first time we had a great waitress who was very much a stereotypical feisty woman. She was very friendly and helped us to pick what we wanted. I chose the Irish nachos, and my girlfriend chose the mac and cheese (her favorite food ever). We loved the nachos- they're made with homecut potatoes instead of the traditional tortilla chips, and also had beer chili on top. All very tasty and filling. The mac and cheese I've heard by many people was going to be delicious- that was not our take on it unfortunately. It was smaller than I thought it was going to be firstly, more of a side dish than a true meal, but also had a... different consistency. I can't tell if it was bad tasting, or more preference related. It had different cheeses than traditionally added and we were not fans. So much so, she helped eat my nachos instead and we left the mac and cheese to the side. But overall we said we'd this place again.
The second time we brought my brother. He loves new bar places. First off, the waitress and host weren't as great as the first time. The host was nice, but an elderly gentleman who seemed like he could've used an extra hand. The waitstaff just said hi to a few people who were waiting in line and would wait around for him. I'm not sure their rules, but we used to be able to take our own guest during circumstances. Anyway, the 3 of us were seated toward the front eventually.
Our waitress wasn't in the best of moods. My brother and girlfriend liked the beer selection. His salad came in one of those crystal looking bowls, so he was pleased with the huge portion. The waitress, since not listening to my whole sentence, messed up my order, but at least it was good tasting- a buffalo sandwich. And my gf got the burger this time which she liked. The gentleman seating people overheard me saying that my lunch was wrong and offered to fix it, told the waitress who was not pleased at the event and rolled her eyes. She was probably annoyed that it was a bit chaotic (although for a lunch it wasn't that busy, how does she react to a busy dinner rush?) but still, our table was near the computer station- hello, I can see and hear you.
All in all, I'd give this place another try, but I'm on the fence at this point.
Was working in West Hartford and the location I was at suggested this and I went. Very welcoming atmosphere and the staff is very accommodating. The bar chips are to die for, and they give you soooo much! I got the chicken over veggies and rice. It had Parmesan cheese on it. The perfect combination and portion of everything. I highly suggest this place!
Review Source:I love this place. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is the price. I wish it was just a touch less expensive. It wouldn't hurt if they had more seating either. Expect a wait during peak periods.
The service I've gotten here has been terrific. The food has been marvelous and the atmosphere is fun.
The menu is pretty standard pub fare. I enjoy the mac n cheese the most. My wife prefers the piping hot chicken pot pie.
It gets pretty loud to, so be ready to talk up even though the place is nice and quaint.
Ok, so I came back and this time I ordered the Pug Salad with salmon (as previously mentioned) and I have to say I was disappointed. The salmon was over cooked and salty and there was way too much dressing on the salad.. so it was  Salt Assault on my tastebuds in addition to the overpowering dressing. Salad Fail. I don't know that Ill be back, not by my choice at least.
Review Source:My wife and I have two pugs. We have been coming to the Corner Pug for almost five years since we have had our pugs. Yes, our pugs Romeo and Lilo have pictures in the restaurant.  We have an interesting habit of not going back to places we don't consider great.  We have been back several times, recommended this place to several people, and bring other people and family members to this place when they come in from other states or countries.  There are several things on the menu we like a lot and keep us coming back.  Kettle Chips, Fried Calimari,  Cobb Salad, Pug Salad, Macaroni and Cheese (bought to be transported out of the country several times), Grilled Portobello, Grilled Reuben, Meatloaf Platter, and you absolutely can not forget to order a Guinness or two.  I would feel safe ordering anything on the menu.  You should also try one of their great coffee drinks.  At this point, my pug Romeo is in a wheel chair from Eddie's Wheels.  He's doing pretty good with it.  You can find more information about his condition or Eddie's Wheels by looking up  Romeo and Eddie's Wheels on YouTube.
Review Source:The gf and I stopped into The Corner Pug on a snowy night looking to just have a beer on the way home. She had been there in the past, but this was my first visit.
We were greeted warly and welcomed to the bar. Before even asking what we'd like, the bartender noticed I was wearing my Otter Creek hoodie. He promptly pointed that they had Shed on tap, which was purchased by Otter Creek in 2011. I'm always open to new beers, so I gave it a shot. Good call, bartender... Good call.
We had a hint of hunger, and decided to take a quick look at the menu just for good measure. From reading a few other reviews, I vaguely remembered hearing something about their french onion soup. It was also recommended by the bartender. Since he was pretty spot on about the beer, I didn't mind following his recommendation.
He was 2 for 2.
Overall, it was a nice place, looked pretty clean, the staff was pleasant, and the feed/beer was pretty spot on. I'd certainly go back there in the future.
I like this place. The atmosphere is very comfortable for a bar. No rowdy drinkers which is always nice. The bartenders are polite, on point and helpful. They make a mean whiskey sour. I have not tried the food but I heard good things. I asked the bartender to look at the menu for good measure and many of the dishes look delightful. The desserts are a must try for me during a future visit.
Review Source:1.) Introduction:
I did my research on this place, and I pass this spot a lot. Also a coworker of mine who lives down in Middletown said he loved this place. Alright, well, let's see what we got here.......
2.) What your eyes may see:
I was surprised. From reviews I thought this would be a very dimly lit place with an uncomfortable open space. It actually looked nice and clean, and the lighting was nice (good for Yelpers to take pictures). I liked how cozy they made this place with the pictures of dogs in frames. They put them all on your table, on the ledge of the table, near the top part of your seat. Every where was full of framed pictures of pugs.
3.) Food:
I ordered the the shepherd's pie with a small pug salad. It was served with a small loaf of bread, buttered on top. When cutting and placing my hand on the bread I noticed a certain crumble to it, when eating it I noticed a not so fresh taste. This bread has probably been out since morning. The pug salad was great. I liked the vinaigrette dressing, and the vegetables appeared fresh. I never got to see what was on draft and bottle. The shepherd's pie at the Corner Pug is different than one I had at another Irish pub. This one had more meat in it than starch. I think whenever I'm in the mood I would like either/or, more starch than meat or more meat than starch.
4.) Service:
The host and waiter were pretty good. The host sat us pretty quickly and was very friendly. The waiter was fine greeting us, serving us and refilling our drinks appropriately.
5.) Impressions:
I've only been here once, so I can't give you a true rating. For now, I think it's A-OK in my book.
Went out with Kirstin tonight and hadn't been here in quite some time. I enjoy the relaxed pub atmosphere and the food is good, too!
We started with their Irish Nachos--this is definitely  the way to start a meal here! Thick cut potato chips with chili, cheese, and traditional nacho toppings create a mound of goodness on a plate.
For entrees, I had the French Onion Soup--not bad, but I"ve had better. The onions needed to cook for just a bit longer to give them the melt-in-your-mouth quality that I expect them to have. I also had a side of their mac and cheese--skip this. Completely unremarkable, definitely not what I expected from the menu description. It was as orange as could be and not the homemade stringy, cheesy mess that I hoped for, more like a cheese sauce.
Kirstin had the pulled pork--very nice flavor, good portion. Â Then, she ordered dessert--bananas foster. I've never had this before but it was spectacular. A pool of caramel sauce with banana slices and a mound of vanilla ice cream and whipped cream in the middle--presentation alone, this was a pretty dish. The taste was great, too, and I'm not even a banana person.
Good place to have a casual dinner or belly up to the bar. Or, just have the Irish nachos--you won't regret it!
I always feel bad about giving negative reviews, but I really had to come on here and warn people that their service stinks. It was lively at the bar, but we came early for dinner because we had somewhere to be at 5:30. The hostess stared at us when we walked in through the dining room entrance. No hello, only a stare while she sat just looking at menus. She didn't acknowledge us. For first timers looking to scout out a new place for our office workers to come, it made us feel a little unwelcome and like we'd made a mistake and walked into their kitchen.
After a minute of ignoring us, she said hello and brought us to a table. We were the only ones seated for almost the entirety of the meal (two older woman and another couple arrived when we were waiting for our checks). The waitress had no personality. It seemed as though the bar was the place to be, and we were just the annoying folks who kept her from hanging out at it. She was softspoken and said little more than: can i get you drinks? After that, when she  came back she took the menus and stared at us like we were just supposed to spit out what we wanted without even asking, hey, are you guys ready to order?
After that she disappeared.
The food is alright. I had the mac and cheese, while my companion had the fish and chips. Both were hot, fairly portioned, and we had nothing to complain about.
But we wanted to order some alcohol, and the waitress was no where to be found.
We gave up trying to reach her about that after she didn't even come to ask us how our food was and if we needed anything else. When we finished eating, several workers walked past us (we were right next to their little backroom hall area thing), most looked at us, but our waitress did not appear for 7 more minutes. We just sat there, ready to leave with our hands in our laps, but couldn't because she was off somewhere and didn't care one lick about us. Â Again, we were the ONLY ones seated until we were leaving; she couldn't have had a million people to tend to.
She asked us about dessert, we declined, and she started walking away! Thank goodness my friend stopped her and asked for the check, or who knows when we'd have seen her again!
I notice another reviewer says not to expect to be treated like a Sultans, and we don't, but we do expect the minimal schema of waitress to customer to play out in full. You greet a customer arriving, take their order, bring it out, and ask once if they need anything. You notice someone is done, you go over and ask them if they want dessert/need anything packaged up/are ready for the check. This waitress clearly didn't get the proper training in regards to how to get a higher tip than 4.5%. I like to give 33% if the waitress/waiter is nice , especially since I used to be one and understand how tough it can be sometimes.
But she was just terrible. Maybe we just had bad luck this time, but she was horrible enough to warrant us to recommend our office, and everyone else I know, not to eat there unless you go to the bar area or have time to sit around and wait for a slow waitress.
Best french dip. Â Bread is perfect, meat is great and Au Jus isnt too salty. Â The waffle fries are great too. Â I did notice the last 2 times I went in the sandwich got smaller. Â The burgers are good too.
I also had my husbands 30th bday party there in the private room. Â They were great and very accommodating.
A favorite place of mine. I've been here twice and during both visits the food was phenomenal. Â The first time I ate here, I ordered the "Knife & Fork Irish Nacho Burger" which was AMAZING. The second time I ordered the "Blue Plate Meatloaf Platter" and the "Baked French Onion Gruyere" soup. I love french onion soup and IMO Corner Pug makes one of the best bowls of french onion soup I've ever had. They have a great beer selection and wine list also.
Review Source:I have yet to be disappointed by this restaurant! I come here frequently. Not only do I love the ambiance (it reminds me of pubs which I have patroned in England and Ireland), the food is wholesome, hearty, and homemade.
I am a fan of their delicious beer-battered onion rings, whose batter is clearly from scratch and tastes delightful. I love their mac and cheese. My fiance says their French onion soup is the best he has ever had from a restaurant; I can't speak for that, however, because I really don't like French onion soup in general.
They have great lunch specials and are a reasonably priced pub for the area. I would strongly recommend them.
No complaints.
Everything we had was really good and so was the service.
We were super thrilled with the Irish nachos. Instead of tortilla chips the use home made deep fried potato chips with chili and minced tomatoes and onions for salsa. Really, Really Good!!!
As the pug salad came out I was reminded that apparently the same people tat own Tapas own The Pug. The salads are the same.
Tried the pulled pork. It was on a grilled bun that was nice and soft with a piece of cheese and ham added to it. It was not terribly large in size but also came with fries.
The burger ordered was nothing out of the ordinary.
Fish and chips was your typical deep fry with breading and Lauren had no complaints.
The pug probably deserves 4 1/2 stars. Nice English pub atmosphere and I've had many a good meal and never disappointed. Â Yesterday's stop included:
- wings are mediocre at best not crisp and poor flavor (skip the wings)
- fish and chips (fries) were excellent with very crisp fries good quality fish and batter. Â Weak ketchup but malt vinegar at the table
- Clam strips were excellent
- Ten Penny is always a pleasure
If I had any complaint it was that the waiter was trying too hard. Â Adjacent parking is a nice plus when in the city.
Great place, super tasty food, nice and relaxed vibe, good service. What's not to like? Check out more of what I have to say about this place on my Stefcations blog, but for now here's an excerpt: I'm 100 percent ashamed to say I'd never been there before, even though I've lived within a half-hour of the place for most of my adult life.
Yet my newbie status proved surprisingly useful. Upon arrival, I checked in via Foursquare (Note to the uninitiated: This is a smartphone app that these same wise co-workers got me into last summer) and unlocked a special deal for newcomers: Free onion rings! Woot!
These onion rings were no joke, either. They were practically the size of doughnuts, and there were a whole lot of 'em.
Our table gobbled them up no problem before turning our attention to the menu, which features 12 worthy beers on tap and plenty of mouth-watering food options: mac and cheese, fish and chips, shepherd's pie, Philly cheeseburgers, and the list goes on. You really can't go wrong.
And as the name suggests, The Corner Pug isn't just about a love of food and drink.
Fiance and I came here around St. Patty's Day.
I tried out the Shepard's Pie and thought it was really good, albeit salty. Fiance's meal was ordinary- so ordinary that he can't even remember. Together, we shared the kalamari, but felt that the seafood dish was too small and over seasoned.
Though it didn't look busy at all, the hostess took a little while to seat us. Also, our server was nice and always available to speak to. Atmosphere was really great! There were pictures of pugs everywhere! We were contemplating bringing in a picture of our dog (although he's a CHUG...), but decided against it. The purebreds can take over the store. Haha. Lastly, parking was convenient- there's a really big lot behind the building!
I'm not sure if it's worth it to come back, but we'll see what happens!
Kind of hard to rate this pugalicious joint.  3.5, I think.  Some things here I love such as the French Onion Soup (the best), Chimay Grande Réserve, and the wings.  Other things are only ok, like the baked mac and cheese, the French Dip sandwich, and desserts.
I placed a take-out order here yesterday for a half-order of wings and a mini pug salad. Â The drive from here to my house is about five minutes and the tangy, vinegary smell wafting through the air was enough to make me salivate and fantasize about sinking my teeth into the wingy deliciousness. Â When I got home my dreams were realized after I opened the box to find meaty, plump, flavorful wings that packed some serious heat. Â Also, the blue cheese dressing was incredible.
I was equally excited about the salad, so imagine my disappointment when I opened the container of salad dressing and instinctively tipped it over in a pouring motion to find that it was not liquid, but a gross blob of a congealed mess. Â It was solid but jiggly. Â Ick.
So, some things are better than others. Â I still really like coming here for a drink or for the tried and true menu items, though. Â I like the friendly atmosphere (bartender makes a strong effort at remembering names), comfortable feel, and casual vibe.
Plus, it's only a few minutes away from home.
If you don't like The Corner Pug, then you don't like bars. Just stay away from them, and stop running to Yelp to whine about how you weren't treated like the Sultan of Brunei at a FREAKIN' PUB!
(That appears to be the trend pervading the majority of negative reviews for this place... Do yourself a favor and don't listen to these prissy socialites...)
Anyway, rant over. The Corner Pug is just a great ol' fashioned pub, one of West Hartford's best, for sure. It's a place for every emotion - celebration, relaxation, love, sorrow, loneliness. And how could you not love an ol' dirty bar with pictures of cute little doggies all over it?
And the pub fare matches the pub feel. Plenty of beers, plenty of food. I'll especially brag about the brunch, which is truly fit for kings. I had a steak and eggs with toast and a mimosa for 14 bucks... Not sure if the price is still the same today, but what a deal, and a what a meal to last me till the middle of next week!
Show up, wear jeans, order beer. That's the life at The Corner Pug.
Where to go for a good meal late Sunday evening? Â The Corner Pug, that's where. Â
Most Sundays we are busy out and about all day long, and unfortunately many places tend to close early on Sunday evenings. Â Not The Corner Pug, thankfully. Â We have been here many, many times. Â We never have to wait to be seated - the staff is always ready for us when they see us walking in the door. Â We are usually seated in the same booth each time, and it has become a running joke for us that it's "our" booth. Â The waitstaff is always friendly, and more than accommodating for special requests. Â
The Corner Pug has a cozy, traditional English pub feel to it, and we have always enjoyed the comfortable ambience. Â The pictures of pugs everywhere are a nice touch, whether you are a dog lover or not. Â
The food tends toward comfort food such as Shepherd's Pie and Mac 'n Cheese. Â I've had both, and while they are okay, I have other favorites on the menu. Â The burgers are all good, no matter which one you try, though the Mac's Big Burger with blue cheese is particularly good, as is the Philly Cheeseburger and Mac's Grilled Chicken Breast. Â I also like the French Onion Soup (scrumptious!) and the Chopped Salad with English Bleu. Â My boyfriend loves burgers and Guinness, so this place really works for us. Â
We never feel rushed, and sometimes after a leisurely meal we have joined the crowd in the bar to have a round of drinks. Â It's easy to join in the conversation, and we always feel welcomed and at home.
If you are partial to the dog breed pug, this is your place. Â There must be 300 framed images of pugs scattered around the restaurant. Â The owner changed the name from Corner Pub many years ago favoring the name "Corner Pug" after his dog.
I have been visiting this establishment for 5 or 6 years. Â Usually to meet friends and hang around. Â Their bar is nicely set up, usually crowded around dinner so often we will grab one of their comfortable booths. Â I frequently order their Ruben, but I have been eying the prime rib with Aujus and horseradish they offer on Monday and Tuesday each week. Â I stopped by yesterday after work and was not disappointed.
I ordered the 16 oz prime rib meal. Â Wow! Â They were kind enough to substitute grilled veggies for the garlic mashed potatoes. Â I went with three other people. Â Nice portions, good service, great food! Â In the future, I believe I would back off the 1 lb. offering and order the 8oz instead. Â The 16 oz prime rib was enormous. Â I am a fan of an end cut. Â Really wonderful. Â I also ordered it served with fries. Â Some of the others in my party ordered burgers and the broiled veggies with Chicken breast. Â The broiled veggies really are good, and an excellent choice for vegetarians as a meal, adding protein is an option.
I have eaten there with folks that have allergies and they were catered to appropriately.
They also participate in foursquare fyi.
Yummy roasted veggies. The roasted vegetable plate is on both the lunch and dinner menu and is delicious. They roast veggies and serve them over rice pilaf with truffle, black pepper, and parmesan. I find it to be a perfect warm meal on a cold fall or winter day. If you want a meat, you can add chicken, shrimp, or salmon.
They also have traditional New England dishes like shepard's pie and yankee pot roast.
Holy mac n'cheese batman.
Every single noodle is hand-placed vertically in a casserole dish and baked au gratin. It's the cheesiest and most delicious mac n'cheese i think i've ever had. It was so rich and perfectly made that i could only eat half of it which is great because it definitely would be a much-welcomed left-over meal :D This mac n cheese instantly gives this place 3 stars. Â In addition, for another star, the atmosphere is comfortable and the other food we had was great! I suggest the Irish Nachos too :)
The waitress was a little bit slower than we would have liked and forgot about our bread but If you're looking for a casual pub with awesome pub foods, this is the place!
Quite a few visits here over a good six-year period.
The restaurant's decor is handsome and whimsical. Very U.K.-feeling. The bar itself is a work of art in mahogany wood and beautiful details.
They have very good comfort food like pot roast, meat loaf, and the occasional lamb special. I had a steak once and it was just a horrible cut of meat, not cooked particularly professionally, either. It would've been greatly improved if they'd salted it properly, and perhaps put a little butter on it while it was resting.
Soups are very, very good. Salads come in a couple of different sizes and that's convenient if you're doing small plates.
The big problem here is that there's an "I just don't care" culture about many of the servers. On one evening, our server kept us waiting for everything (15 mins or more for drinks, then another for ordering, then for another round... 45 minutes had passed and we hadn't yet received a thing to eat) until, exasperated, we asked for a manager and asked him to change our server -- from the paunchy blonde girl who didn't seem to care about anything, to the poor little brunette who was picking up her slack (getting drinks, condiments, etc.)
The bartenders are surly and don't know how to make a Martini nor a Manhattan properly. I watched in horror as one of them used a shaker that had just been used to make a sweet round of shots for a group at the bar -- pick up the shaker and use it to make my Martini; without rinsing it out. When I called him on it he was snotty and I got up and left that moment.
When I decided to come back recently to give them another try (I'd heard through the grapevine they'd made an effort to improve things) I was greeted by the same horrible blonde refugee from Weight Watchers, who literally threw the menu on my table. I guess she remembered me from when I asked for someone other than she as our server. I left, again, lest the creep spit in my food. Yeah, the servers have that kinda Chili's-T.G.I.F. mindset going on that would lead you to believe they'd stoop that low. It's an us-against-them mentality. The entire staff, including kitchen help, regularly sip sodas in the hallway and talk amongst themselves -- with plenty of customers in the restaurant.
If you want better service and food that up to par for this restaurant group, run, don't walk, to Dish in Hartford. A million percent better.
Oh, and did I say the parking lot is an absolute disaster to get into or out of?
My parents LOVE this place...last 2 Christmas's I gave them gift cards for the Pug. I've eaten here several times and always enjoyed myself. The food is good quality pub food. Their Pub Fries are cross cut which is a pleasant change. The nachos are excellent. Ive had the fish and chips (big portions served in a plastic basket with fake newspaper underneath), a few burgers, and the soup. The French Dip is also quite appetizing. Great selection of beers including local drafts. Desserts are also a treat. The Chocolate Lava Cake is great.
Good service when I have been there. Nice atmosphere. Worth the trip.
The zen burger was the worse vegetable burger I have ever had!
It was a patty of bread crumbs deep fried and not fried in a good way. It was worse than the box mix of falafel. Maybe it was the box mix and then left unseasoned... Ugh, I am still creeped out by this burger.
Horrible calamari as well, but the fries were good, service was decent and most of the sandwiches were edible.
Ah the Corner Pug, oh how I miss you.
I used to vist this location a lot for lunch when I was doing an audit on a client right around the corner. Especially since i never had to pay for the meals, I don't remember what the pricing was, but I do remember enjoying the food.
Their dinner menu I do remember wasn't quiet as appealing to me as lunch, but I definitely was a fan of their lunches. Typically we were in and out in under 45 minutes, which is key for a place at lunch time.
I did also hit up this place a few times for happy hour, but again didn't pay, so prices mean nothing to me here. I do remember though that the service was top notch, and never had an empty glass in front of me.
This place is re-PUG-nant, and should be called Corner Petroleum Palace, or something that gives you fair warning about the fact that everything you get will be grease laden.... Instead of tricking us with cute little pug dogs.
The service was atrocious, from the moment we were (not) greeted at the door, and all the way thru the meal, until the check was delivered in which our waitress managed to spit out "Thank you very much" (I almost fell over to hear her utter more than uh-huh and yup). That was the most she has said the whole time. I don't think I have ever seen a woman who did not want to be at work more than her. Everyone is entitled to a bad day, but she was just downright rude and anti-social.
I tried to be friendly, and it wasn't just her that was like this, the manager (his name was Chris), he was just as rude....I never managed to get her name, altho I wish I had just so I could warn you away. You will know when u see the sneer on her face. If you make the mistake of going here.
We walked in and took note of the ''please wait to be seated'' sign, which was not a problem. So we stood, and we stood (me with my cane)....and the manager was standing not 5 feet from us, and never once looked us in the eye, or said someone would be with us soon.
Two different waitresses walked past us, completely ignoring us (If u have never been here, you have to realize, they were passing not more than a foot or 2 away from us! and not one of them acknowledged us for more than 5 mins. We should have taken that as a sign. AND, I wish I had paid attention to the 'only 3 yelp stars' before we went. but their menu online is deceptively delicious looking.
What the place should be named is GREASE pub. OK, we did have one somewhat decent thing....The French onion soup, altho it was salty and had hardly any cheese on it, was OK.
Hub ordered the fish n chips, which was horrendously greasy and the batter was way too thick....he tried eating the fish out of the batter, and it was still greasy and the fish was not fresh, or white or tender. It was basically inedible. Same for my Omelet (which i was psyched they had on the lunch menu), but OMG, the eggs tasted fake (and greasy), the onions were burnt, and it was just overall inedible. It came with some pug fries, which tasted like fish and were so greasy, I could only eat 2. Are you getting the theme here? Grease!
The other thing we had ordered as an 'appetizer' was the '3 cheese garlic bread'. Sounds yummy, doesn't it? This was the most unappetizing thing when we got it, and it is hard to screw up garlic bread!!! It wasn't even warm enuf to melt the cheese for one thing, and the description of the bread said nothing about it having cheap, canned, chopped tomatoes all over it. We sent it back and the 2nd time was just as bad (sans most of the tomatoes, altho all they did was pick them off, except they missed a couple). It was ridiculous, and yes, they did take it off the bill because we did not touch it.
We paid for the rest of the meal, altho we barely ate any of it. Oh, and their 'pub fries' that sounded so good. I have never seen a ''cross cut'' fry that was sooooo greasy. Every single thing they served was just laden with grease. Between that and the horrendous service, we could not get out of there fast enough!
Do not get sucked into here by the cutesy theme. I should have paid more attention to not only the yelpers, but i had seen lots of other websites saying bad things, but for some reason (it was that damned onion soup....We had been craving French Onion soup, and they said they put Gruyere on it, and I love Gruyere)....so...our fault for not listening to the masses. And my friend's i-phone Urbanspoon app, He shook it and it came up with this place, I texted back, "oh, they don't have a good rating"......but then I ignored my own words! So please, take my word for it now, go elsewhere!
