I came here once when it first opened and ordered carryout multiple times since then. Â It's almost as good as the indian food on devon. Â I've tried their Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Korma, Chicken Vindaloo and the like. Â
I don't know if the service has improved since my first visit, but back then it was terribly slow. Â For no apparent reason.
The food is pretty good, although they made our orders too spicy (after we asked to make it mild). They charge extra for rice, which is ridiculous, but that may be a Chicago area thing. Also, they never refilled my drink (I shouldn't have to ask). Overall, pretty decent Indian food, but nothing to make it stand out from the others. Â I haven't tried to Nepali selections, it may be worth coming back just to try it.
Review Source:Saw Curry Hut on Groupon, Highwood location, buy 1, get 1 Buffet, great! Two groupons were purchased for 2 couples, plans were made, went today. The restaurant was empty, I told the waiter another couple would be joining us. I mentioned Groupon and was told by the waiter only one per table, so ok we'll have 2 tables for two. My husband and I sat at a table and our friends sat next to us at another table. How ridiculous this was for an empty restaurant not to say, you can sit together... What happened next just floored me, the waiter then told our friends "you have to move to a different table", which was all the way in the back of the restaurant and away from us???? Seriously? So we got up to move next to them, and the waiter forbid us to do so. When we moved back to our original table, I said to the waiter " you're punishing us to sit next to one another because of the Groupon?" he nodded Yes! I told him I was going to write about this, so after the fact and a scene later , he allowed our friends to move back to the table next to us. This uncomfortable scene could have easily been avoided if it weren't for the Waiter, when I asked him for his name, he would not tell me. This was a very awkward and uncomfortable brunch because of this particular Waiter!! Needless to say, a definite non repeater!!!
DON'T PUT CURRY HUT ON GROUPON IF YOU DON'T LIKE WHEN THEY ARE REDEEMED!
Curry Hut is passable, but not close to the best Indian in Chicago. Â It's not bad, but I wouldn't go out of my way. Â Yet another of those examples of places I'll go to if I absolutely have to eat on the north shore, but if I can hack the extra 25 minutes to make it to the city I'm heading south.
All dishes are serviceable renditions of all the timeless Indian classics, but they come up just short of actually being good. Â The Samosas were OK., but frankly kind of leaden. Â The Saag Paneer was too pureed and had a slightly unappetizing brownish tinge to it. Â Flavor wise it was unacceptable.
Bottom line, if you are stuck on the north shore and need an Indian food fix go here. Â If you have other options to satisfy your urge, go there.
This is one of those stories where poor service trumps good food in a review.
I've been here twice. Â The first time I thought the food was pretty good and the staff attentive. I came in around 5 pm and ordered a combo tandoori plate, all Indian food. Â There were big portions, everything was spiced nicely, the chicken was very delicious, and the naan was pretty awesome.
The second time the naan was still pretty awesome. Â That's about it. Â I came in late on a weeknight, around 9 pm. Â I asked upon arrival if it was too late, and they assured me I was not and seated me promptly. Â There were two other tables dining so I figured it was OK. Â That was the end of everything good about my meal this time around (except the naan). Â The waiter brought me a menu. Â He stood there while I was reading it. Â Then he said I needed to order quickly because the kitchen was about to close. Â I had an idea of what I wanted, one of the Nepalese combos, so I ordered that, along with some extra naan. Â When the meal came out, most of the dishes were pretty good. Â However, both the chicken and the goat were mostly bones with very little meat; very very bad cuts. Â About five minutes after receiving my food, the other waiter began to hover near the table. Â At this point I was the last table in the restaurant. Â He would walk slowly by watching me the entire way, then reappear after a minute or so and do it again. Â Maybe I was just feeling self conscious because the place was empty. Â No. Â I wasn't. Â Several times he asked me if there was anything else he could get me. Â I was still eating my food when he approached and asked if I was finished. Â To say I felt rushed would be an understatement. Â I'm not sure why they seated me, between the high yield of bones in the food and the servers' attitudes, the rest of the staff were not in league with the hostess on that decision. Â I felt unwanted.
The food is still tasty, very tasty actually (the reason for the 3 stars on this review, though food-wise alone it is probably 4 stars) and I might eat there again. Â Maybe. Â Mostly if someone else treats me, and never at 9 pm.
Thank you for blessing the north shore with decent Indian food. Â especially liked the tikka marsala lamb with basmati rice (very generous portion) Â and naan. Â Personally, I'm not a big fan of the momo appetizer, it looks like the Chinese xiao long bao but tasted much drier. Â I took the leftover momo home, added a bit more water and microwaved it and it tasted better.
Review Source:I never thought I would like Indian food until I went and tried Curry Hut! Â It is very sad that this is one of the only good Indian restaurants on the North Shore. My favorite dish that I would recommend is the Chicken Makhani This is roasted chicken in a creamy tomato sauce. Um, um, good! I also really like the drink that they have called the mango lassi. Â It is a yogurt based drink that has a mango flavor. If you are going to eat here, make sure you go during the lunch buffet. It is at a good price and you can try the selection of soups, salads and entrees they have.
Review Source:The Pros:
I love coming here as I love Indian foods. Food is great. It's expensive so Lunch Buffet is a better option for $9.95 and you wont have to worry about slow service since you are serving yourself.
The Cons:
4 star instead of 5. The service is always very slow. Came here Monday afternoon with hubby and 2 very young kids.
How could Mondays be so slow??? The place wasn't that full.
We were hoping to eat as fast before the kids gets bored.
Guess what, it took  more than an hour for our foods to arrive and nobody was explaining what was going on. I made 1 bite and decided to wrap the foods home as the kids were starting to get grumpy.
The waiters are very busy but I think the problem is from the kitchen. Not sure if they need more cooks but 1 hour is way too long to wait for only 2 orders in the menu. We only ordered Chicken Korma and Lamb Tikka.
I cant imagine if we were a group of 5 or more ordering 5 different stuff in their menu.
Overall, if you are not really hungry and not in any hurry, the food is tasty and wont be disappointed. Definitely a favorite Indian food restaurant.
We will  just leave the kids home next time!
WOW!! Â This place is sooo amazing! Â The lunch buffet is a really great deal because there are so many delicious options to choose from. Â If you are a meat lover/vegetarian there will definitely be something for you. Â If you are a person who has been afraid to try any food that doesn't come from a brown paper bag because "you won't like it" Â THINK AGAIN. Â This place is my JAM!
Review Source:After reading the reviews, it makes me feel that you almost shouldn't be allowed to judge the place if you've only been there once.
I have been there MANY times mainly for the lunch buffett and the food is exceptional. Â Spiced so beautifully and just delicous. Â The only complaints that I would have (because these do seem to be constant enough to warrant a complaint) is that they are slow bringing out the naan and conversation with the guys is a awkward at times. Â Overall, freakin' amazing food and pleasant service!
We were hungry and just happened to come across this quaint little indian place. Well it's actually Indian food with a nepali flair since it's owned by Nepalis.
I had the chicken saag with naan and it was awesome. A lot of selections and the food came quick. I was afraid it would be left overs from the lunch buffet but it was wasn't. Good, hot fresh and tasty.
I'd recommend this place but it's kinda out of the way.
I absolutely LOVE this place - it's easily among my favorite restaurants of all time!
They have an expansive dinner menu to choose from, and their lunch buffet is a terrific deal. Â I've never had a dish I didn't adore. Â Everything was very tasty, and made to taste. Â With a coupon, or online gift certificate, you can really treat yourself to good appetizers, a few dinners to share, a drink or few, and a tasty dessert for a good price. Â Whenever my roommate and I feel like treating ourselves, we make a trip to Highwood for Curry Hut.
Best place to park is alongside the building, near the theater entrance, or in the Metra station lot after 5 pm. Â The Highwood stop on the Metra Union Pacific North Line is just a few meters away, making it convenient to get to, even without a car.
Hello? $9.95 for tasty all you can eat Indian food? Â Yes please!!
We have been here several times for the brunch/lunch buffet as well as ordering off the menu and have yet to be disappointed...really. Â The food and the service has always been good, so I don't have any complaints.
I can't say its the biggest buffet out there, but in terms of taste, I think its very good. Soft, warm, fresh naan, salad bar, tasty samosas, tandori chicken, pakora chips, papadum, spiced fluffy rice, goat curry, Â sweet carrots with almonds, spiced cauliflower, and a few other dishes plus 2 soups and a dessert. Â
If they are low on something they make more quickly and refill naan as often as you like. Â My water glass was never empty.
I say if in the area, check it out. Â It is a little hidden behind some trees/bushes and there is a small theater in the same building, but just look for the red sign that says Curry Hut.
A local favorite! Curry Hut offers a combination of Nepalese and Indian cuisine. The food is wonderful - you could easily believe you were on Devon rather than in Highwood! Â They will make the Vindaloo as spicy as you want it & all the vegetable dishes we've tried were excellent.
Curry Hut has a very reasonably priced lunch buffet, and they also have great take-out service.
Yelpers, you've let me down when I needed you most! Bland, overpriced, terrible service, and for this it gets four stars? For shame!!
A family emergency brought us to the North Suburbs from the coasts and we all desperately needed to eat somewhere, without having the first clue of what might be good or where to find it. Â Sure, maybe Midwestern Indian food was a misguided choice, but we're an adventurous lot--so I turned to you, trusted Yelpers, and this, THIS is what i got in return for my trust:
We arrived at about 7:30. After a 15 minute wait (so it was Saturday, i'm not complaining) we got stuck in a booth in the back corner of the dining room. 15 more minutes of sitting and we got water. 20 more minutes of sitting or so, and someone decided it might be nice to take our order. Fine, ok, you're the BFD in this town, I'll cope. But then...then the people who were seated just after us are paying their check and it's been an hour and my uncle's run out of bad jokes and there is STILL no sign of our food. Half the dining room is now empty. No food. When we finally flag somebody down and inquire about it, our (lukewarm, excessively bland, overly oily) food arrives, with a 'complimentary' plate of rice nobody wanted. By the time we got the check it was after 10pm. An all around unpleasant experience I couldn't in good conscience recommend to anyone. Blech
I love this place, it has some of the best curry I've ever had! Â They have so many different kinds, and great appetizers! Â Also the naan bread is so soft and pillowy, goes so well with the curry! Â Even if I'm super full, I will have the desserts too, kheer is to die for! Â I wish I could go here more often, but I only get to go on special occasions because it's a little out of the way, but so worth it!
It's very upscale and elegant, the name with 'Hut' in it is very misleading! Â Anytime I mention it to people they kindof laugh at the name, and I have to convince them it's actually a really nice place and not a 'hut', lol! Â
A wonderful place for a date or a meeting. Â It's strictly all Indian food though, so if you have that 1 person in the group who only eats hamburgers and pizza, they're going to be out of luck!
Curry Hut is one of my favorite places to eat when I'm back home from school; between the Indian and Nepalese options, it's certainly the best Indian restaurant on the North Shore and more than comparable with places on Devon.
As has been said by reviewers before me, the lunch buffet has a great variety of selections starting with soup and several salads and appetizers like samosas and pakora. If you're having dinner, get an order of momo to start-- Nepalese steamed dumplings filled with minced chicken with a mustard dipping sauce. Moving to the entrees, Curry Hut generally offers three to four on their buffet, far more than most Indian joints even at higher price points, a heaping portion of naan (that will get refilled through your dining period) and a sizzling platter of tandoori chicken. Finally, save room for dessert-- they often offer gulab jamin, halwa, and my favorite, kheer, a rice pudding that tastes sweet from condensed milk and almonds.
While earlier reviewers have complained about the service, I've had nothing but good experiences. Coming here about once every other week in high school, the owner still recognizes me when I show up to get carry-out and, if my food isn't ready yet, gives me a small tea tasting while engaging me in interesting conversation at the bar. The location is small but clean and tastefully decorated.
Curry Hut is a great way to explore Indian and Nepalese food that I cannot more highly recommend.
Okay, so another 3.5 star place. It's a little hard to find, but worth the find. Honestly, we came since we had coupons/certificates, but we didn't leave disappointed. We came for dinner and there was a healthy amount of people here on a weekday night. The naan here is great, garlic naan and the til ki naan were good with our meal. The best dish we got were the lamb (forgot which one) and the chicken curry, which was so tender and sweet. The service was kind and quick. We were pleasantly surprised.
Review Source:I am from MD, but when I am in IL for business I always visit the Curry Hut. Â When on the road all I want is good quality non-burger joint fast food. Â I have eaten Indian food all over the world, and for a US$9.00 per person it can't be beat. Â The Curry Hut buffet is in a nut shell, THE BOMB. Â Stop by and try it, you will leave with a full tummy and a smile on your face.
Review Source:I've taken my colleagues to Curry Hut several times for the luncheon buffet. Â The entrees are fresh and tasty. Â They weren't ridiculously spicy but offered ways to add spice later. Â I think it's a great value for $9 buffet. Â Curry Hut serves naan bread with lunch and it's delicious. Â I will continue to go there on a monthly basis.
Review Source:I was disappointed to see some bad reviews of the restaurant, it is one of our favorites! We love going just us or with a group. We have taken people who have tried other Indian restaurants and then they try the Curry Hut and their opinions of Indian food have changed for the better.
We don't go that often as we're in the city, but it is worth it when we are in the area visiting family. The service has always been good and so far we have never had anything disappointing from the menu.
The Curry Hut makes it seem like it will be a tiny little hole in the wall, but it most definitely is not. Prices are on par with other restaurants we dine at - great for a casual dinner we usually spend like $50/couple depending on what we get... and we always order WAY too much food!
Not the best Indian restaurant in the area, but a solid one nonetheless. I would recommend the lunch buffet, as it is a reasonably-priced way to sample many different dishes that you may not otherwise order (the offerings change daily I believe). The staff is very welcoming; the service isn't always the most attentive (the waiter is usually hanging around the kitchen area) but it could be much worse.
Review Source:YUMYUMYUMYUMYUMYUMYUMYUMYUMYUMYUMYUMYUM!!!!!
Awesome Mo Mo Dumplings. Awesome Lamb Vindaloo. Awesome Curry Lamb. Awsome Nahn. If you dig Indian food you will not be disappointed with this place.
Don't let the casual name fool you; this place is supreme service and white table clothes all the way.
I've only been here for lunch, but I like that they have a buffet lunch. Â Cause, I never know what to order when I go to Indian places, only because I want to try so many things. Â I also like that they have one vegetarian dish, a meat dish, etc. Â That way if you're a vegetarian you can still go to the buffet. Â They bring out tandori chicken to the table as part of the buffet and you're able to get more if you like. Â
The only thing I dislike is there are only about 4 main dishes to pick from, I wish there were more options. Â If there were more options I'd give this place five stars.
i love this indian and nepalese restaurant!!! Â they have a lunch buffet special for $8.95 for dining in and take out!! Â i've never been to a place where they allow you to take buffet foods to go. Â maybe i've been living under a rock. Â
anyway, they have this chicken dish called "chicken makhani" aka "butter chicken". Â it's not buttery at all so don't let that butter chicken thing scare you. Â it's in a creamy tomato sauce. Â oh so yummy! Â
this place is great to bring those who are afraid to try new foods because i think they make their dishes very american friendly.
the prices of the dishes are moderately high. Â i.e. entrees range from $9.95-$24.95 (for lobster). Â so, i would recommend the lunch buffet for those who want to get the most for their money. Â =D
oh, and the servers at this place are amazing!! they are so nice....
