We order from here all the time. Delivery is speedy and tacos and tostadas are great for the price. Our one gripe is customer service. While pleasant on the phone, it's really annoying that they ask you to call back if you call a minute before 6pm for delivery. They should at least take down the order and process it after 6 so that customers don't have to call back. And when I say minute, I really mean a minute. It's not like we're calling at 4 or 5pm. While not a deal-breaker, this has been a deterrent from ordering again.

I ended up coming back here when I needed a quick meal. I'm glad I did! I think the first veggie burrito I got was off, but the one I got this time was much better. All of the ingredients worked perfectly, and I'm glad it comes with guacamole inside. However, I would skip the chips/salsa/guac at this place. I'm really not a fan of their chips, as they taste like they're overfried/oily/tough.

The green salsa still makes me feel like drinking an entire glass of water if I accidentally add more than a dab.

Best mexican food on taylor street.
Although you can definitely get better mexican food south of here, it's quality stuff and won't disappoint.
I've tried their burritos, tacos, chips & salsa, and tortas.
It's just like most other taquerias but I think they use slightly better ingredients and put a little more care into their cooking process. I also believe it is family owned/operated which gives it a nice friendly feel.

Love this place. It's my favorite place to go on Friday nights (after enjoying the wine tasting at nearby Gentile's). The burrito is great, always made to order.

I was oh so hungry after getting some work done, meaning my defenses were low and all I could think about was Mexican food.  This place is within walking distance from me, so I had to try it out!

I walked in and was welcomed by the cashier who was so very very nice and warm.  I decided on a carne asada torta and two chicken tacos based on people's reviews on  here.  Both were so delicious!  I had never had a torta before, so wasn't too sure what to expect, but when I found out it came with beans and guac in the sandwich I knew I couldn't go wrong.  The chicken tacos were really good and seasoned really well, although I doubt I'll get them next time just because I generally prefer other meats for tacos.

But anyway, so glad I have a good Mexican place so close by without having to hop on a bus or drive down to Pilsen!

I recently had beef burrito, which was pretty good.  Looks like, to me, their chicken is quite salty, but steak taco/burrito is ok.  Good for me since I usually only eat steak taco/burrito.

For the price,  De Pasada certainly delivers  without overstepping any boundaries.  However, when it comes to quality, I think they are about average (not bad by any means, but definitely room for improvement).

The pulled chicken is certainly the highlight of this place - very juicy and flavorful. At $2 a taco, the price is a bit high, but the flavor is right on.

The tortas are about $5 each - I tried the carne asada with the works.... I was a bit disheartened by the amount of meat (or should I say, the lack of meat) on the sandwich. I think I would of gotten more meat just by ordering the taco, and saved a few bucks too.  Nevertheless, the meat was very flavorful and cooked nicely.  I would recommend for De Pasada to increase the portion sizes a bit on the tortas.

Overall, a good place if you are in the area.  Fairly quick, moderately priced, and pretty tasty.

I've never had a chicken taco this delicious before. It's shredded and simple with cilantro and onion and the price is right. I've been eating this for years and it never gets old.

My other favorite dish here is the Huevos a la mexicana for breakfast and their delicious coffee that smells like cinnamon.

    That is all.

I love their carne asada. I can't find a better steak taco in Chicagoland. The pork is amazing too. Bottom-less free chips and salsa.

Their claim to fame is they have thee best tacos in town.

I ordered two ala carte chicken tacos.  Just plain ol tacos with meat and topped with cilantro and onion.  Others at the table ordered up super taco meals (three tacos with lettuce, cheese, sour cream, guacamole) served with a side of rice and beans.  Our food came out super fast.

My simple little tacos were served on small double layered corn tortillas.  LOVED the cilantro.  They were super juicy, super flavorful, super simple, super awesome, super cheap.  Simply super!

Word of wisdom...try the salsa before you take a giant mouthful of it.  The salsa comes in spicy (red) and spicier (green), if you practice portion control with the salsa you'll do just fine.

Family owned restaurant on taylor street offering exceptional authentic mexican food for the area.
The most important thing to know about this restaurant is that the ingredients are extremely fresh and food is made in him off and pick flavorful mexican fashion

Disregard prior reviews that food is good - it is absolutely not the case!

Everyone talks about Taylor Street and the best.....dot, dot, dot, but I have a hands-down all around best chicken taco in Chicago. For $1.99, you'll get two corn tortillas with a generous portion of flavorful pulled white meat chicken topped with cilantro, onions, and salsa verde. The salsa is hot and spicy and extremely addictive. I order 4 myself and leave nothing to spare. If you've got a better chicken taco, I'd like to know about it. Who's hungry?

Forget the burittos. They're average. The tacos are overpriced ($2.40? Come on, that's DC pricing territory), so definitely pass on them. So why 5 stars?

    1. While average, the burittos are a very reasonable price, especially given their massive size.
    2. The tortas are a great deal and very good. Quality bread, plenty of filling.

In short: a very clean place that serves tasty tortas for a great price.

I found a cute little taco spot on Taylor Street thanks to Yelp. I did a custom search on taco spots near me, and De Pasada popped up. I would have never gone here if I hadn't found it on yelp. This is a family-owned establishment that has a large assortment of tacos, and they are excellent. I tried the chicken taco which had a seasoned/marinated pulled chicken. They also have Jarritos - the super-sweet Mexican sodas - my favorite is the pineapple. My friend was raving about the steak taco, and said that it was the best taco, even better than the chicken. This is a good place if you want good, quick, quality food for a low price.

Oh lengua tacos, how I love you. Regular carne asada tacos are delicious too but the lengua tacos are so tender. Yum!  This is a very "homey" restaraunt, definitely family owned.  You definitely can't go wrong with the burritos or the tacos.  I would skip the "super" taco, all that extra stuff just isn't necessary and I feel it takes away from the flavor of the meal.  Do go for the super burrito though!

For drinks- check out the tamarind jarritos- that's my favorite!

I met up with one of my friends who attends UIC during my lunch break yesterday.  His apartment was half a block away from this place and per his suggestion we went here to grab a bite to eat.  I got two carne asada tacos, one barbacoa taco, and a Mexican coke to wash it all down.

I started off with my barbacoa which was just okay.  However, the carne asada was the star in my opinion.  Tender yet chewy pieces of beef with a great grilled flavor.  The salsa they give you with the tacos is tomatillo based (at least I think so) and has a little kick to it.  Pretty good, but the tacos are good enough to stand alone as well.  Tacos were each 2 bucks a piece, which is a good deal.

    De Pasada blew me away.

The decor was simple and laid back, a couple of guys watching soccer, the owner running food and taking orders, nice lighting.  All around cozy place.

Got to the table, had delicious chips and salsa, which is always awesome and checked the menu.  My mentality the first trip to a mexican joint is "try as many different kinds of tacos as possible"  Picadillo, Barbacoa, Carne Asada, steal girlfriends chicken burrito.

Everything was good, the Barbacoa was fantastic, and I was about to leave a satisfied customer.  While paying we learned that there's a (minor) discount for students, which is awesome cause I have no money, and making cheap tacos cheaper is a surefire method of winning my heart.

I come back a week later, not only did the woman working remember me from last week and remember my order, she followed up on some small talk from my last visit: where my girlfriend was, how my project I was talking about went, etc.

Any place that goes out of their way to make a personal connection with the people who eat their food is worthwhile.  Any place that has yummy delicious food attracts my attention, as I am a fan of yummy delicious food.   Throw in the cheap factor, delivery and take out options, and the general easygoing feel of the place makes it a must try in my book

The most flavorful chicken tacos I've ever had! Not dry like other places.

Horchata is great! Not too sweet or too rich, a good compliment to the food.

Only downside for me is the sauces, not as flavorful as I've tried at other places but still good in their own regard.

    Taco. Heaven.

Lengua, Al Pastor and Barbacoa tacos. nom nom nom.

We stopped by for tacos before hitting up the Roller Derby bout at the UIC pavilion and what an excellent decision it was. It is owned by the same family that runs the place with the same name on Ashland close to do Division. And the food is just as great.

The salsas with the chips come in two varieties: Spicy or spicier/Tasty or tastier

The aforementioned tacos are spectacular in their simplicity. Meat, onions, cilantro and salsa and an extra dose of awesomeness.

    Great BYOB with no corkage.

This is a family owned and run restaurant. The carne asada burritos are fantastic! The service is friendly and fast. I would stick with the lunch and dinner items....not so big on the breakfast menu. I will have a burrito for any meal of the day. The menu is not overwhelming which is good. The guacamole is decent. They also serve a red and/or green sauce with the chips. It is nice to have choices. One more thing.....Real Coca-Cola...enough said!

Delivery from here is an option...which is super convenient.

I've been to De Pasada quite a few times over the years. The food has always hit the spot and usually been under the magical $10 for a decent sized meal that fills me up. No, they're not the BEST steak tacos that I've ever had (I'd say Zacatacos or El Asadero for that), but they are still very good. I like the new location, which is a few doors down from where they used to be. The new location features updated decor and a better seating area (and a nice flat screen TV).

The service is always pretty quick, although sometimes they will forget to refill your water. This can be very annoying because one of the salsas is ridiculously hot (at least for me, a gringo). Speaking of the salsa, if you get tacos, you might want to consider asking for NO hot sauce, because that sauce can be so hot that it takes away some of the flavor of the tacos.

But all in all, I've had some very good experiences at De Pasada. If I lived in University Village, it would definitely be my "go-to" place for Mexican food. But as it stands, it will probably still at least warrant a yearly visit.

Oh, and one more thing. Every single time I've ever been in there, Chicago Police officers have come in to eat. You know a place is cheap, quick, and good when all the cops are going there!

Solid spot for some pre, post, and post-post exam eats. Good prices, fast service, and a mom & pop run atmosphere make this always a good choice.
Recommend: steak torta, milanesa torta, breakfast burrito, chicken tacos.
    Dis-Recommend: barbacoa

I really enjoyed my tacos the other day...

I got steak tacos and chips and salsa. And of course horchata. The tacos are great! I got the super ones with lettuce, cheese, sour cream and guacamole. They were great but I've heard that you should get the regular ones so next time!

Chips were fresh and not too thick. Salsa was tasty and I can't stop thinking about their horchata.

P.S. they also have coke bottles!

Made it back here after trying it for the first time a few months ago. I had been curious if it's really as good as the small sample size I experienced before. So this time I dined in with my partner in crime.

First off, I dig the style of this place. It's clean and cozy, but still maintains the small Mexican restaurant atmosphere. Yes, there's no law that says all taquerias need to look like they'd fail the health inspection on the drop of a dime in order to be considered authentic. I guess you could say this place goes against the grain a little bit. Added points for the BYOB and flat screen TV.

As far as the food? OMG the food. The first time was no fluke. The food here is pretty marvelous. I ordered the 3 taco dinner. Two carne asada, and one barbacoa. Mouth watering GRILLED steak (makes all the difference), and some equally wonderful barbacoa made for one of the best meals I'd had in weeks. The girl ordered the chicken flautas, which were also excellent. The salsas, in particular the salsa verde, provide plenty of kick. No weak ass salsa there. The rice and beans are standard but good.

Once major thing I should mention about the serivce: I realized when I got back to the house is I left my iPhone at the restaurant. So I called and the nice girl at the register said they discovered it and will be there waiting for me whenever I wanted to come get it. Thanks, honest people of De Pasada! This place is great in all aspects. Hopefully all the gringo college kids in the area realize what a gem this is.

If you are looking for a place that is exceptionally reasonable, the perfect location for prior to Bulls or White Sox games, and you crave good Mexican, then this is the place for you.

Somewhere between a fast food Mexican place, and a sit down restaurant, this is worth a stop.

The service was better than great, with a wonderful woman who really was more than just excited about her job.  She was terrific at steering us through their menu, and despite the fact that the place really became quite busy, she made sure we were not forgotten and out the door in time to get to the stadium for tip off.

Highly recommend the steak tacos and chicken tacos.  One of our group proclaimed the chicken taco as the best she has ever had, and she has had quite a few.

Guacamole and salsa was outstanding.  Terrific flavor and very fresh.

The Carne Asada was excellent, albeit several of the pieces were chewy---however----the remaining was great.

They are a BYOB place, and it was just what we wanted.  They were very warm to get us glasses for the vino.

Very clean, and really attentive staff.

Would highly recommend....even if you are not on the way to a game.

And it is a great value.

Do not be fooled by the subterranean location; De Pasada is outstanding stuff.  There's no shame in making regular trips to Little Italy for tacos y burritos this good.

I recommend the carne asada super burrito, better known as the "copper's special," for all of Chicago's finest that patronize De Pasada.  Actually, I just made up that name, but you can't come here without sitting by a few cops.  Great place to avoid getting mugged like the diner patrons in Pulp Fiction.

Anything carne asada works, my friends.  I don't know what they do with it here; it's just better and fresher than anywhere I can recall.  Human meat, perhaps?  I'll bet it is.  They'd better be careful with their butchering, what with all the cops eating there.

Wash down the burrito with a Mexican Coke or two (far better than the watered-down version we get here), and in the unlikely event that you are not full, the chocolate cake/flan hybrid is outstanding.  The whole place is, really.

When De Pasada says they have the best tacos in town, they mean it.  Everything I've had here has been excellent - from the carne asada tacos to the authentic Mexican Coke.  The ingredients are fresh and the price is right.  There are usually a couple of groups of Chicago cops and Cook County Sheriff's Police eating at here, so you know it must be good.
Parking can be a pain, but it's all well worth it.

    A great lunchtime treat!

When the weather is nice and I we decide to go out for lunch, I always suggest "tacos".  Everyone knows that means De Pasada.

They moved next door to a larger area, but they are still crowded at lunch time.  Goes to show you they are that good.

When you are seated the one waitress that manages the whole place, brings you chips and salsa, and serves you water.  It's best to order as soon as possible since the place is always so busy, so be ready with what you want to eat when you are first seated.

I love their chips and salsa.  I eat them all!  I feel bad I don't leave any for my girls, but I can't stop myself.  We're regulars, so we get hooked up with extra chips and salsa without even having to ask.  They red salsa is some of the best around.

The tacos, burritos and tortas are very good.  The meat is nice and fresh and well seasoned.  The milanesa is good and not greasy and the bread is well toasted on the grill top.

I'd love to give this place fix stars, but there is one problem.  Their food is only good at lunch time, and maybe only during the week.  The evening crew is really slacking in comparison to the lunch time crew.  It seems as if at the off peak time, the meat is just reheated (and not that well).  Maybe they aren't putting any love into the food.  I don't know.

We'll, that's all I have for you.  Good tacos, just make sure it's during the lunch rush.  And tip your waitress good!  If you notice, she works hard to keep everyone in the restaurant happy.  The place is always packed and she darts here and there without taking a break.

This is an unexpected thrill in the realm of what used to be only Italian restaurants.  Although the decor is nothing fancy the food is spectacular and the service is friendly.

They have the best steak burritos in the world.  The carne asada super burritos are delicious and blow your Chipolte and usual taco stand away.  The steak is juicy and plentiful, a good amount of guacamole and other ingredients to fill you up no matter how hungry you are.  The horchata is excellent as well.  i wish I had room for desert but that has never happened and the burrito is so good I have never ordered anything else despite the fact I have gone to this place for over 10 years.

WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU DE PASADA!

We are looking for a new place :) YIPPEE.. and happen to be in the UIC area.  Normally we love the carne asada anything - but this time around it was tough and almost inedible!  YUCK, really wanted to love it but didn't like it at all.  It's cheap, but it's not what it used to be.

I'm not sure exactly why the vast majority of the reviews of this place are so positive... granted Mexican food in Chicago in general has been a pretty huge disappointment for me.  I usually chalk it up to my upbringing so close to the border of the motherland.

Now I have no issue with hole in the wall ambiance.  I am not huge into chips so greasy they slip out of your hands, but I can deal with that too.  But for someplace that claims to have the best tacos in town, they just fail.  I had a chicken taco that tasted like the meat had been boiled, and the carne asada was chewy.  And not Chewie like your faithful Wookie companion, chewy like meat that had been cooked way too long, or sitting under a heat lamp or something like that.

Also the refried beens were burnt tasting. Bleh.  The service was nice, but I see no reason to make a return trip.

I would rather wait until I get home to the northside to get my mexican food fix.  The menu is pretty pricey for the quality and the chips and salsa - not that good (Garcia's mmmmmmmmm).

I only ate here when I lived down the street, and when Chato's closed down and we discovered this place has breakfast.  That's the only thing that gives this place a 3 instead of a 2.  Don't order anything from the "American breakfast menu" because they look at you funny and tell you "only mexican breakfast" - even though both are clearly on their menu.  I had something that contained chorizo and egg and a side of tortillas - finished it off with a horchata.

    Breakfast of champions!!!

    But sadly, that's it.

L-O-V-E this place. Makes the best barbacoa in the city.

However, the only thing is is that they don't tell you when they're missing ingredients and what not. Once I ordered a burrito and when i left, found out there were no onions. Today I ordered 2 burritos and it wasn't until I specified that I didn't want tomatoes on the 2nd one that they told me they didnt have them in today ANYWAYS...

They don't lie when they say "Best Tacos in Town" & I am not just saying that because it is my family's rest. I love this food! I have been to many Mexican rest & this really is one of my fav. Now I have not had the chance to visit the new location next door since I live in the burbs so I can't say anything about the new set up or decor. Living in the burbs it's hard to find a good & affordable Mexican rest.

    Why I love De Pasada:
    * Super fast & friendly service
    * Fresh everything! Love the horchata, salsa, & chips made daily.
    * Affordable
    * Open late
    * Delivers in the area
    * BYOB

Three stars for cheap. I asked whether the torta came with avocado or guacamole. Yes, they said, but then tried to sell me a burrito. I can't eat half the stuff in the burrito, so I had to work a little to convince them to give me the torta. Strike one.

Strike two: torta arrives with no avocado and a total of about one leaf of shredded iceberg lettuce, a meager amount of chicken, and lonely slice of sad, pale tomato. The bread was big and smelled really nice, but I can't eat bread either. If you can, I guess it would be filling. (I thought bread was weird as part of a torta but whatever.)

Strike three: I grabbed a soda out of the cooler when I sat down, and one of the waitresses made sure to yell that I had done it. She did it in this loud, rude way that seemed to imply I was stealing. The cooler's in a public area, for Pete's sake.

Normally, it'd be a 3, but given its competition (or lack thereof) in the immediate walking vicinity, I'll go ahead and give it 4.

It's sort of a step above a "burrito joint" but certainly not a "Mexican restaurant." It's pretty big and can get pretty crowded, judging by my walks past. The time I went, though, there were only a few other tables, which meant service was impressively fast. Nice, too. Decent chips, tasty salsa. Veggie burrito had a nice balance of ingredients and was warm with a little crispness to the tortilla.

Are there better, more authentic Mexican places around? Sure. But are there much worse ones? Definitely. While I wouldn't go too far out of my way to come here, if I want a burrito, and I'm by UIC, I'd probably stop here.

Great prices great speed, rice is good and ya dont find that everywhere.

Update 5/18:  Today had a torta as highly recommended by Yelpers, and I agree - its good, yet, not "where its at".  Actually was more impressed by the guac and gordita.  yum diddley!
