I want to start this review by saying that when I go to a restaurant for the first time I am really hoping that I like it and that the experience is a good one. I am not as picky as my reviews suggest that I am...I don't mind paying good money for a meal as long as the meal is a good one. It seems that there are few good restaurants in Columbus and in the downtown area alone, there are restaurants on every corner so I would think that the competition for the customer's food dollar would make the owners strive for better food and service. But it doesn't appear that way to me.
There were three of us in the party and we arrived at Detour around 1pm and the place was nearly empty. Always a red flag in my opinion but we wanted to try the food and we hoped it would be a good place to eat that we could add to our list of favorites in Columbus. We were seated promptly and the server was very nice and she brought our drinks and kept them full the whole time we were there.
We ordered Tortilla Chips and Queso as an appetizer and that part of the meal was very good. We asked the server how the breaded tenderloin was she said it was very good and was hand breaded to order and not frozen. So I ordered that and my daughter ordered a Club Sandwich and my friend ordered a dish called Angry Fish and Chips.
When the food arrived I will say that the presentaion was pretty good. It all looked appetizing and so we began eating. The Tenderloin was twice the size of the bun so I cut it in half and I took a bite of the meat. It had no taste at all. I am not sure, but I think it wasn't seasoned before it was cooked, and it tasted bland. My daughter tried and said that it was the most disgusting thing she had ever tasted. My friend took a bite and said it needed alot of salt to give it some flavor. The breading was not crunchy as I expected, but almost moist and was falling off the meat. I decided not to even attempt to eat it because I was a little worried that it may be undercooked.
My daughter gave me a quarter of her club sandwich and it was okay, better than the tenderloin, but not by much. My friend gave me a bite of his Angry Fish and it didn't even taste like fish. It didn't have any flavor at all. Very strange.
When the server came back, I asked for the bill, and I asked her to please take the tenderloin off the ticket because I didn't feel as though I should pay for something I didn't eat. She agreed and went back to the back. Then the Manager came up and appologized for the bad sandwich, offered to get me something else but by then I had had enough so I declined and told her that I wasn't mad or angry (like the fish) and that we were fine. She was very nice and understanding.
We paid the remainder of the tab which was still very high, $40 for two meals, three soft drinks and an appetizer and left. When we got into my car, my friend told me that his fish was cold in the middle and that he wouldn't order that again.
I had hoped the food would be better than it was when it was Scotty's and it wan't. It was less expensive, but still not worth it. Personally, I won't spend anymore of my money in Detour, in fact, I'll be sure to Detour around that place in the future. Save your money!
This place has the most god awful service I have ever witnessed. I was recently told that its not the same as it was as Scotty's. But then I heard, it's the exact same owners and staff. Apparently the owners have absolutely no sense of guest satisfaction. If there were an option for no stars, that's what I would rate this place.
