For some reason I feel really really guilty of writing a bad review of this place. Â Maybe it's because I'm from out of town and this is the first review. Â Anyway, take my review with a grain of salt, please.
I was traveling from Michigan to Nashville, TN. Â I stop in Columbus because of it's oddity as a hidden architectural gem in the Midwest and it's about half-way in between. Â Jill's Diner is located in downtown Columbus just a few minutes off of I-65. Â
The decor is that of a diner. Â It was not fancy at all. Â The walls were bare and unadorned. Â Everything in the restaurant was practical and served a purpose, nothing excessive to get in your way. Â The restaurant was clean.
There was only one guy working. Â By "working" I mean that he was the host, server, cook and busser. Â He did it all. Â He wasn't the fastest guy but he was nice. Â Well, I got the meatloaf special. Â The meatloaf was good but it was served cold. Â It came with mashed potatoes that had like a dried out film on the outside, probably from sitting too long.
I think the main problem was that I stopped at 2pm between the lunch and dinner crowd and it was just one man doing it all. Â It seems like a good place with a good menu. Â I'd try it again but I'd go during busier hours so hopefully it would be run better.
OK, I'm a Chicago Yankee, so what do I know from biscuits and gravy?
All I can tell you is that Jill's ties with Ole's in Alameda, CA for the best I've ever had. They're just different. Â Jill's is made with some very tasty high-quality pork sausage, and the gravy is delicious and peppery.
If you've never been to Columbus, Indiana, suffice to say it's a planner's dream. I've never seen a place where the lines of new and old buildings are so well integrated. Definitely worth a visit.
