It's right across from the Washington township theater which is why I ended up here. But we came at 3:30 on a Saturday... Still totally dead (as in we were the only customers). Bartenders were friendly, the place was clean, and our hot wings were decent. When others arrived, it became apparent their portions are huge. TVs are large and in charge. When we walked back to our car at 6:30, the parking lot was packed, so it must not be dead normally!
Review Source:Great dive bar, not too douchey for a Friday night in the Jerz. Â The food is very good, but don't go thinking gourmet, this is Ruts Hut with booze and pool. Â Portions are insane; I defy anyone of normal gait and culinary constitution to finish the cheesesteak and fries.
Friendly service and cheap. Â Stretchy pants are a must!
Anyone who thinks this is even close to real BBQ has not experienced close to the real thing. Â First real BBQ is not smoked somewhere other than it is being served. Â This place gets the ribs smoked takes them out of a fridge and heats them on a regular gas grill which in turn means dried out (sometimes cold) ribs. Â Two their sauce is just disgusting tastes like they burnt it because someone wasn't paying attention. Â And finally the third reason you should avoid this place is the sides, beans are mushy and anything that comes with cheese will be cheese from a can. Â As of yet I have not found a place in nj that can say they serve real BBQ so for now I will stick to smoking my own or daisy may's in NYC.
Review Source:Took my friend to backwoods BBQ for his birthday. We took our 5 year olds along for the fun. First, it's a concession in a bar. I was a little put off by the bar atmosphere, but everyone was nice, and it wasn't anti-family friendly.
We got the sliders to start, plus the all-you-can-eat rib platter, the pulled chicken, French fries, and mac n cheese. The sliders and mac n cheese are small plates- perfect for kids.
OK- the sliders- there were 5, and all inconsistently cooked. One was burnt to a crisp, one was medium rare. The m-r one was delicious, but the charred hockey puck was not impressive. The mac n cheese was from a velveeta mix, and then left too long under the warming lights or in the oven, so it was unpleasantly hard on top (not crispy, just dried out). The pulled chicken was ok, although I found blobs of skin and fat in them, which did not help the experience. The spice mix was a bit flat. The sauce on the side was pretty decent. The slaw was just ok.
We had two types of ribs- the St. Louis and the baby back. The baby backs were covered in sauce that had not been warmed enough, and the ribs underneath were dried out. We hoped for better with the dry rub St. Louis ribs. The ribs were cooked perfectly- falling off the bone tender. However, the dry rub was horridly bland. The only flavor of the rub was pepper, and even then unimpressive (seriously- bland pepper rub. Go figure).
On the plus side, the French fries were great- unpeeled, flavorful. The best part of the meal was the baked beans- tangy, with a bit of brown sugar, and chunks of pork. Supurb. We were told there was no dessert, so I brought some myself, and the waiter was very accommodating. The service was great from both the wait staff and the bar. However, these positives were not enough to outweigh the very average to poor food.
First, I must say.. I was at the original Backyard BBQ when it was in Westwood. The experience there would have gotten probably a better rating than the one to follow.
Atmosphere: It's a sad, sad shame because the food isn't bad, but the atmosphere takes away from it. This restuarant is now located in a bar. . .yes, they have 9 tables off to the side of a large hole in the wall bar. They still have some of the tables and benches from the first restuarant; but they are accompanied by misfit chairs. The TVs are blasting; its dark and dirty. When you walk into the bar, there is a sign that says, "Please wait to be seated." We went there at about 5pm and stood there for 10 minutes until I had to lean over the bar and say, "Can we just sit?" The bartender was friendly. And, i hope you dont mind flies! The entire time, we were swapping flies away from the food. We actually had to put papertowel over our food while we waited for the waitress to come over and ask if we wanted it to be wrapped. Yes, no napkins... a roll of papertowels on the table but that goes along with the ambiance of a BBQ joint.
The Menu: it's homemade. Looks like it was printed off the computer. I dont recall Westwood's menu ever looking like this. Its weird!
The Food: We had the mac & cheese and the Potato Skins with Chili as an appetizer. The Mac & Cheese was just ok. If you are going to use Japense Breadcrumbs on top, please brown them in the oven prior to serving. Just wasnt good. The Potato Skins with Chili really lacked flavor. They were definitely homemade, not the typical frozen bought ones. The portion was large enough for an entree. I wasnt a fan of either. For dinner, we shared the 4 meat combo- Pulled BBQ Chicken, Brisket, Pepper & Sage Ribs, and St. Louis Baby Back Ribs. It came with beans, cole slaw, and corn bread. The meat was all EXCELLENT. The cole slaw was untraditional, unrecognizable, and just plain out funky. The beans were good- traditional molasses style backed navy beans with large chunks of meat inside. The corn bread was not traditional southern corn bread. The corn meal used was extra fine ground. It had been sweetened considerably. It was more like a sweet corn cupcake.
Personally, I just wasnt impressed. My boyfriend would like to say that he is happy that there is someone producing authentic BBQ like this in our area, despite the lack of education and experience of the people in our area with this type of food.
Honestly, i think the atmosphere and the flies really bring this "restaurant" down. The waitress was nice, but not professional. We ordered another soda and it came in a plastic cup. And our food came out before even getting forks and knives.
Sorry, Backyard BBQ... wont be returning and probably wouldnt recommend to anyone because of the atmosphere. Its a shame because the food is almost worth keeping your eyes closed throughout the entire meal.
The boy and I used to be pretty big fans of the late defunct Backwoods BBQ and were very pleased to see they had partnered up with another place and started to once again serve their great bbq.
This is the best bbq in the area unless you want to drive all the way up to Baileys in Blauvelt, NY.
This place isnt big....in fact the dining area is only 6 or 7 tables, most of the space is used up by the bar area to have room for their tv's and pool tables.
The baby back ribs here are very good....they also come in a good sized rack perfect for a party of two.. Â As for the sides, it comes with beans and slaw, but I suggest subbing it for the fried onion rings and mac'n cheese. Â The fried onions are like the ones that they used to sell at Benigan's. ....more like thin strips of deep fried onion. Â sooo yummy. Â The mac n cheese isnt the best, but its good and cheesey and def beats cole slaw (yucky!).
The DogHouse also has good specials depending on the day, for example yesterday they had $0.35 cent wings (in orders of 10)... Â $3.50 for 10 wings aint bad...and the wings are actually smoked too! It gives them a very unique taste over other places' wings and makes them very tender.
If you like bbq check this place out. Â It's not only good....but theyre also CONSISTENT....which is a big +.
Jay Lippin and Company from the now defunct  Backwoods BBQ and Grill (<a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz/backwoods-bbq-and-grill-westwood">http://www.yelp.com/biz/…</a>) in Westwood, NJ are now serving up their  'cue in Washington Township!
The Dog House is half bar half barbecue restaurant. Â The bar area has a pool table, televisions, darts and a few arcade games.
The portion of the restaurant closest to Pascack Rd has approximately 6 tables for four and 3 tables for two. Â The actual tables are the same ones that were in Westwood. Â They are wood tables cut from trees left in their natural state. Â There were actually some people from the Montclair area who came just to see the tables. Â Lucky for them that they got to enjoy some great food too!
The menu is very familiar for those who frequented Backwoods.
Upon ordering our drinks we were served a bowl of pickle slices and pickled tomato. Â Nice touch!
We began the same way we began the very first time we ever went to Backwoods. Â We had the corn dog appetizer. Â They are tempura-like and served on long skewers sticking out of a wooden pig. Â They come served with a side of spicy brown mustard. Â Very enjoyable.
Since it was a Wednesday I went with the all-you-can-eat ribs for $20. Â You still order them half a slab at a time. Â They are served with coleslaw and baked beans. Â The baked beans have pork in them. Â Yum. Â Tonight I had half a slab of the dry rub St. Louis and half a slab of the baby backs. Â The latter was the better of the two tonight!
My wife had the hanger steak salad. Â It is a very large salad that has onion strings/rings on it as well. Â She seemed to enjoy it very much.
We passed on dessert.
Service was very good. Â There were quite a few happy and familar faces from Backwoods.
They hope to do delivery in the near future!
We look forward to returning!
