Where do I begin? Â I read great reviews. Â I will say the decor is pretty cool. Â The $9 Mai Tai that was pushed on is was pretty good. Â Don the Biatch advertised sticky ribs from the kids menu to the appetizer menu to the daily special. Â So I fall victim and order it. Â 20 mins later they alert me they are "out". Â Need less to say I order something I don't want. Â Advertised as " steak" with tomatoes. Â It was weird Chinese food beef in sugary sauce $20. Â Skip it.
Review Source:Invited friends for lunch today since dinner wasn't going to work for them timing-wise. I thought, heck, okay, never done lunch at Don's so let's give it a go.
When we arrived and went to the hostess station there was nobody there, just a sign that said "Dining room temporarily closed. Go straight to Dagger Bar." So we go to the bar, sit and our waitress gets us menus and takes our drink order. Mai Tais all around. Drinks came pretty quick and we didn't want appetizers so we ordered lunch. Mai Tais tasted really good.
Here's where things started to break down...
After over 20 minutes we asked how our food was coming and the answer was "soon." Each time we checked the answer was always "any minute" but after half an hour still no burgers or pulled pork sandwich. When food did start to arrive the type of fries were wrong. They have regular, garlic and sweet potato fries and between three of us we had all three kinds covered. We thought...Unfortunately one plate did not have sweet potato fries and another did not have regular, so now that needed to get fixed.
Long story short, the problems got fixed eventually but it all took much longer than expected. Our waitress gave us another round of drinks to make up for it but I think we would all been happier if everything had been right the first time.
It seems that they have a skeleton crew for lunch. Our waitress was the only one in the bar taking and filling drink orders and it sure seemed like they were running the kitchen with only one person. Based on this experience I would go back for dinner...maybe, but I can't recommend them for lunch.
This is a nice island getaway paradise of a restaurant. When I arrived, it was empty, but filled up before I left. There was a native playing on the ukulele for everyone & it was very pleasant. They use island backgrounds (waterfalls, palm trees, etc) throughout the restaurant & tiki rooms. It is also good for corporate events - there was one being held that day.
The pupus (food) were okay... But you don't go to tiki places for the food, you go for the drinks! All of them are good, just a bit on the pricey side ($12 for a small plastic cup).
The day that I went, they happened to be doing an annual tiki festival where they sell various tiki trinkets, paintings, etc. I like it. They also had a California classic car display going on.
Interesting place!
