This spot is a definitely go to. Â I have had many things on the menu
salt fish and cailoo, salt fish and cabbage, jerk chicken, shrimp and catfish, the oxtails.... Â it is all tasty as hell. Â Did i mention this is my favorite jamacian place to go to? Â And that I pass up two better known spots to get here? Don't play. Â Some jerk, a bottle of ting and if i'm gonna be really greedy a beef pattie ( they also have veggie and chicken)
This place ain't high flauntin' and its in the middle of the stone cold hood, but that don't stop me from getting my grub on. Â The place is well kept, there's a flat screen for dine-in and the owner's wife--( i think) Â dreads and glasses is friendly and pleasant.
Clean, friendly and affordable south side Jamaican jerk joint.
A school event brought us to the neighborhood early on a Saturday morning. As the day wore on we asked a local where the best BBQ place was. He directed us to Don's. Not BBQ of course but mighty satisfying all the same.
We didn't meet Don, but a kind woman who could dish out and take my annoying style of humor took our order. As we waited for our food to come out we enjoyed small talk with her and later a mom who came in with her two kids.
Jerk catfish: Delicious. Not a filet but the bones were easy to remove.
Jerk chicken: Same, chew the meat off the bones, yum.
Curry chicken: slightly different spices, similar meat prep, awesome
Brown stew chicken: ditto, yum.
[They had run out of goat. Boo.]
Rice and beans were a little dry but she gave us plenty of extra jerk sauce which woke it up.
You get cabbage or green salad, we tried both, I'd say go with the cabbage. Salad was ok though.
Plantain on the side was great and just the right amount.
A slice of dense white bread comes with. Edible, but you're really just supposed to use it as your napkin.
I forgot to get a beef pattie. Kicking myself now.
A note on the neighborhood. The only thing whiter than me was the starched collar of the gentleman selling The Final Call out on 79th and Stony. But I parked my station wagon around the side and didn't get hassled so I'd say visit with confidence and you will be rewarded with a tasty meal and some memorable scenes. Such as the cool ethnic heritage mural a block east, and a scary no-tell motel just to the west.
We're coming back for that goat! And I want to try the oxtails and beans too.
That's all I got, check it out peeps.
