Went last night for a friend's birthday. Â Yes, the drinks take 10 minutes and cost 10 bucks. Â Yes, its really smokey. Â Yes, the bartender sucks.
But what really sucked is when two drunk assholes started a fight while the bartender ignored the problem. Â I know it sounds like a story, but the 10 of us were just hanging in the 2nd room playing pool when some random dude that we had never met before started harassing the girls. Â We all asked him to leave several time, and the bartender really needed to step in. Â He didn't and a friend got sucker punched. Â
I will not be going back, and if you don't like being punched or groped, I wouldn't recommend it. Â The prices are absurd too. Â Especially for a dive bar. Â Really absurd. Â Cigar prices were crazy too. Â $18 for a Hemingway Short Story!?! Go to St. Joe's or any of a dozen other bards. Â You'll be happier.
I like Dos Jefes.
For years I have heard how great this place was, but it was never really on my radar. A few months ago several of my friends met here after an elite event and I had a great time.
The main room has several tables and a small stage area. There is a raised back room with an old couch and a pool table. The couch was cloth and well worn. Sitting on it was nice, but the cushions are so worn you sink very deeply which made getting up difficult. The pool table is also fairly close to the couch, so watch out for cues or you may end up needing an eye patch.
The beer selection was very good. I was happy to find Nola Hopitoulas on draft, but it was expensive. Apparently they charge a music tax of $1 extra per drink  whenever a band is playing. I am all for musicians getting paid, but it seems the beer was around $8 or so per pint. There was a wonderful cocktail waitress roaming the room, so I didn't have to fight for the bartenders attention. That was a huge plus and made the entire experience better.
We lucked out that Sunpie was playing on the night we visited. It was even better that during their set break, we were able to hang outside and chat with the band.
If you can live with the smoke and the high cost of drinks, Dos Jefes is worth a visit.
Love the patio (especially the swings) and it's usually a bit less smokey than the inside bar. I know...I know...don't complain about smoking at a cigar bar.  On the other hand, the inside bar has some awesome exhaust fans so that unless someone is stogie-ing it up right next to you, it's really not too bad.  I've always had  quick, friendly and courteous service.
And the fact that Taceaux Loceaux parks out front on Saturday nights. Bonus!
I hate smoking but I've got to admit I have puffed on a handful of cigars in my life so if you want a cigar I guess this is a bar to get them at. Â I still hate smoke so even though I've taken a few puffs on a cigar I still have no desire to be around them or any other smoke. Â My old college roommate's uncle owns this joint and about the only time I've ended up here was when he was in town with a few exceptions here and there. Â It used to be a reasonable place to hang out and grab a drink but recently they have jacked the prices up so high that I won't be returning. Â Charging $5 for Abita Amber is just plain highway robbery and I just won't pay that much for a local beer. Â So not being a fan of smokey bars and refusing to pay $5 for my beer means I probably won't be back. Â C'est la vie!
Review Source:I'm definitely coming back here for happy hour.
We missed out on this deal last time, but $3 Sangria? Yes!
I was willing to pay the regular $6 on a Saturday night, because it's good Sangria, but seeing the Happy Hour sign on the wall made me cringe every time I handed over another $6 + tip... knowing if I had been there a few hours earlier it would have been half the price.
The bartenders were friendly. I love the atmosphere. I mean, I could do without the smokiness, but it's a Cigar Bar, so I'm certainly not holding that against them. Pool tables in the back (ATM in the back too),
Oh, and they often have live music... it started at 10pm the Saturday that we visited Dos Jefes.
Then again, I will happily trade the live music for $3 sangria and come back during happy hour to either drink more, or spend less money.
It was the first experience we had at both Dos Jefes and with our new Drink Deck (awesome!). Â First, the card from the deck was accepted without question, entitling us to $10 off a purchase of $30 or more. Â And, it was Happy Hour. Â 3 Champagne Cocktails (tasty!), 2 Mojitos, and a glass of Penfold's Bin 28 Wine later, we were happy (hour) campers. Â I did see the extensive humidor, and even though neither my boyfriend or I smoke, I cannot deny that I love the smell of cigars! Â And, one star alone goes to the owner's epic mustache. Â Cheers!
Review Source:What an awesome place. The environment was perfect and ideal - I loved this place. Great live music, great drinks, great cigars, staff was cool...one of the best cigar bars I have ever been to, and I have been to a ton, in NY, in Philly, in Sydney, in Austin..Dis Jefes was a ten out of ten.
Review Source:Ok so it's a cigar bar. I'm not personally a cigar smoker but I have worked in a cigar bar myself and I can assure you, the selection of cigars is not that great. Now, there are some fine cigars offered, but also a lot of lower quality ones. And the beer selection, down right atrocious. It seemed like they only offered porters and pale ales. If you like that, it's great. If not, well you can just get a PBR then. The one saving grace is the AMAZING music that is often played inside. But with every good comes more bad I guess, as they have what is called a "jazz tax", meaning everything costs $1 more when live music is being performed. I understand if it's necessary for the musicians to get paid, but it didn't seem like that was the case in this situation. Ultimately, if hearing really good music in a cigar smoked filled bar that has a limited and overpriced alcohol selection  is your thing, you'll absolutely love Dos Jefes. I for one just don't really enjoy that kind of night.
Review Source:Dos Jefes gets a double dos of love from Yours, Truly.
Cigar smoke normally makes me want to puke. I'm also used to cigar bars in Manhattan that are full of wealthy, old business men and high end call girls all done-up, trashed-out and on the make, so that might add to the nausea that ensues.
Rejoice, for Dos Jefes has a completely different environment and just the kind I like- smoky, dark, lively; very much evocative of a different time and place. They regularly have live music that only adds to the whole pre-Castro jazz club in Havana feel. This past Saturday night there was no cover (tip the musicians, please!) And there's a swell patio. And a more than decent wine selection. Cigars? Not for me, but they've got a case full of 'em.
I think this is my new favorite Uptown bar, yo!
Dos Jefes is like if your buddy Bob had a basement that you could hang out in. It's dark, almost dank, there are old couches, a pool table, a bar, and you can smoke cigars there. But $8 for an Old Fashioned Bob?! Really? I thought we were friends? Yes, it's cool that you have music and I can buy cigars Bob, but I think you are a bit pricey on my mixed drink. I go to Bob's basement, I mean Dos Jefes, when my friends want to hang out there. Otherwise, I'll buy my $8 Old Fashioned from Hermes Bar because I'm classy like that.
Review Source:**NOTHING SPECIAL ABOUT THIS CIGAR BAR**
2.5 stars.
Loved the concept.
Jazz music, cigars, and whisky, right?
There was no jazz music when we arrived.
It was pretty much dead on a late weeknight.
It had a nice jazzy feel, but I preferred more leather chairs and couches for an authentic cigar ambiance. It needed a makeover.
CUSTOMER SERVICE SUCKED when we were there.
After standing around for 5 minutes, a young lady finally assisted me. Didn't offer any suggestions and was simply clueless about bourbon and whisky pairings.
If you are working at a cigar bar, please know your cigars and drinks.
Smoked my cigar, sipped my whiskey, and left after 10 minutes.
Maybe it was an off night, who knows.
On the fence about a possible return.
Made a visit here on Wednesday night, when Bob Andrews was playing the piano. Â Andrews is a very good, very versatile piano player. Â True to the name, there is a fair sized humidor from which to select cigars. Â So expect some smoke here. Â There is an outdoor area in case the fumes are an issue. Â There is also a very good selection of bourbon and scottish whiskeys, which pair very well with a good cigar. Â In the back, is a section for playing pool. Â But if you are here, it's for music in a laid back atmosphere. Getting a taxi there easy enough but the same can't be said for the inverse. Â Its pretty far up the Tchoup, at least eight blocks beyond Dick and Jenny's and Tipitinas. Just call a cab company about fifteen minutes before you are ready to go. Â Next time in town, I'll make a point of coming here on a weekend as well.
Review Source:Great spot uptown on Tchoup! If you are a fan of cigars you must come here. The vibe in this place is awesome. Dimly let and very comfortable. They have great specials for happy hour, seven days a week. The servers are very nice and it does not get too over packed. The taco truck also stops by here on Friday and Saturday nights. Great live music a few nights a week too!
Review Source:It is what it is: a cigar bar.
Really small and smoky inside, so if you are easily bothered by smoke, you might want to skip this one. Â Great local music by a live band inside. Â Great patio area outside, if you want to get away from the smoke and the crowds.
I agree with K.W.'s review about the inside needing an update. Â It definitely feels as if you are hanging out in someone's basement during prohibition. Â
I would love this place if I were a cigar aficionado. Â I would like it a little more, if it were a little bigger and less crowded, but what are you gonna do?
Man... the only thing missing in this joint are some leather-bound books!
Dos Jefes is one of the most unique spots in Uptown to grab a good drink, listen to some piano jazz, and, oh yeah, most importantly, smoke a cigar and be machismo! If it doesn't seem like your thing... try it... you'll know what I mean. Â Nothing quite like sipping a Maker's on the rocks with a fine cigar... even if you can't grow facial hair yet.
This place is sort of a right of passage for 21 year olds dudes - or at least it should be! Â This was the 2nd stop on my birthday run (a night which ended on a particular st. downtown well into the morning...(sigh)). Â Our server was very knowledgeable, attentive, and gave our crew a free shot! Â
As we began to walk out, the piano man on the stage began to play a Tom Waits cover of "I Wish I Was in New Orleans". Â At that moment, my life was complete.
dos jefes could have a lot of potential if they redesigned the interior. Â i feel like it needs to update itself from cheap hotel lounge to hip library and/or man-cave. Â the bathrooms also need to be overhauled.
the patio area is nice but not as spectacular as it could be.
doubtful that i'll be back as there are better bars around town with more ambiance and character.
WONDERFUL Â
Just what we wanted. Â Cigar bar with a drink selection! The hour stink. Â It wont open till 7 most day and the specials are from 5-7 go figure. Â
However they have wonderful prices wonderful products and live music. Â
At night a mobile unit serves out side starting at 10 and the chef assures me that he has the brisket to beat. Â I will have to check it out soon.
The staff is very friendly and they are very attentive.
I hesitated to post this because I want this jem all for myself, but i suppose a few others wouldnt be too bad.
It helps that this place is around the block from my house, but I would like this bar anyway. Â They let me bring my dog into the patio, which is equipped with swings and palm trees. Â They have a great liquor and beer selection and great live music. Â Very chill atmosphere! Â Oh, and of course, for you guys (and gals if you will), great cigar selection, too.

Live Jazz? Everynight
Very laid back place to come have a drink and have a smoke. Yes people smoke here so if you're anti second hand smoke it probably won't be a 5 star for you. Even so this place is a must to check out.
Very chill place. Good place for visiting friends too. Just make sure they're not supporters of the smoke ban bill that just got struck down by the house..
Alright, I'm not a 40 year old man that only enjoys whiskey and cigars. But, this is the place where you can get good aged whiskey, scotch, or brandy. There is always live music and a prime selection of cigars. Also, the patio is pretty great. They have a swing-set bar and a string and circle game. This is a great place to have a guys night out or a quiet date. I don't recommend this place to anyone who believes in second hand smoke.
Review Source:Since this spot is so far Uptown, I hardly ever go. Went twice last week and one night was average and the other night was awesome. I like the bar itself; comfortable, good place to be with friends at, especially when a cool jazz act is playing. Things don't happen until late, so never go early for a show, unless you plan on being wasted by the time the show starts. I always seem to meet cool and interesting people here and that's why I keep going back. Beverage selection is pretty good (as is the cigar collection).
Review Source:This place is a mixed bag. On the plus side, the layout is great, with a main room with live music and an outdoor patio, and the quality of the music is excellent. The night I was there Delfeayo Marsalis was playing with his quartet, and with no cover charge you can't beat that.
On the down side, they need some truth in advertising on showtimes. I was there on a Friday night ... in local papers and on numerous places inside the bar (a chalkboard, a flier in the bathroom), the starting time was listed as 9:30. In fact the music started as 10:45. A half hour or so later I can see but that's not even in the ballpark. Then you have a the whole smelly cigar thing. Drinks are expensive ($5 for a bottle of corona) but I guess that's to be expected. The night I was there it was pretty packed but only about 20% of the people were listening to the music. The rest (including many about 10 feet from the band) were just yakking.
Friendly and highly competent bartenders, eclectic patrons, and outstanding music make this Uptown hotspot a real gem. Â It's not 'trendy" mind you, just cool. Â
Unfortunately, it IS a cigar bar so your clothes (and your hair, if you're a girl) will smell like barbecue ashes the next day. Â But that's a small price to pay to enter a Euro-bohemian time warp.
Live music every night. Â No cover charge (although there is a 'Jazz tax' of $1 per drink when the band is playing). Â And swings at the bar in the outside patio.
