I want to like this place because it is the local tavern - very convenient if I want a quick no frills bite.  I have been consistently disappointed lately for a number of reasons.  For one, the staff is not friendly if you are not a "regular".  I don't go to bars and just sit.  I'll go for a meal, but I don't hang there.  When I go there, I feel like a stranger who just rolled up in someone's house uninvited and interrupted a convo.  The servers barely acknowledge you when you walk in.  The waitresses  (yes all the servers are women) are all really young (like barely 19) and they all dress like they came out of the Hooters school of waitressing.  I just can't stand seeing young women dressed to pander to local oversexed, overaged and over drunken men.  Next is the food.  The menu LOOKS good, but the food isn't all that great.  For example, the dirty chips (which claim to be kettle cooked chips) are more like like Lays potato chips topped with melted cheese.  The tuna melt was a major disappointment with a bag of (Lays) chips on the side.  The fish and chips dish is so greasy its almost inedible.  Burgers are pretty good and probably the best thing on the menu.  Someone else said the food is a notch above cafeteria food and I can't disagree.  Bottom line, this place good be so much more with a better trained staff, more attention to detail and food that lives up to the description on the menu.
Review Source:this a great place to have a quick bite to eat .i havent been there in a while so decided to go last night was in ther mood for a certain burger they called the shrimp asain burger which consisted of a homemade burger teriyaki glace shrimp with a asian salad top with fried wontons and they took it off there menu!!! why???/ ):so we tried a diffrent  burgers which was also good and the crab cake sandwich which was sooo good  . its all crab meat (i hate it when theres so much stuffing in the meat that its just a lump of mush) it was seasoned really well  & comes with a side of old bay fries
Review Source:Just your standard overpriced, lousy bar with delusions of quality. Â The fried appetizers were close to Jr. High cafeteria, but with downtown prices. The best thing that could be said about the burger is that it was forgettable. Scotch selection sucked for a place this size. Service was ok.
I have to eat at this pompous dive once a year - and i'm grateful I have 364 days until the next time.
This is my go-to place for an early dinner to start off a little date night or to end a crazy week with Sunday lunch. I'm totally addicted to their buffalo chicken salad and my fiancé always finds an interesting beer on tap to tickle his fancy. Their specials change monthly and, while some are better than others, the Drake is very willing to accommodate if you aren't fond of what you ordered.  It can get crazy crowded on a Saturday night but complaining because the place is popular and busy is kind of pointless because any place worth while is going to be packed on a weekend, especially a place with a bar. I also love that when the weather is nice you have the option to sit on the patio which is surrounded by some sort of misting cooling system.
Review Source:Fix your food cab banner, I'm tired of looking at that droopy thing everyday on my way home from work! It says a lot about the managements attention to detail if something like this is allowed to persist looking like crap. How clean could the kitchen be if you don't even hang an advertisement so that people can read it?
Review Source:One of the best places to grab a burger and fries in Jenkintown. Â I recommend the Chipotle Guacamole and Cheddar burger and Drake's fries with cheese. Â Perhaps it is because we split the fries, but I think their food is not too greasy or heavy (some of the other customers think otherwise).
Review Source:Dissappointing.
First, the service staff was really dissappointing. After being seated, it took a good ten minutes for us to get a drink order. Second, they seemed confused and even 'refreshed' a drink when it didn't need refreshing. The sushi had to be sent back because it was too rare. The 'kettle chips' was like eating lard. Â The sunroom patio could of used a little temperature confrol. I have heard the burgers are the best, and most consistant thing they make.
The beer selection isn't bad, but overall, I wouldn't go here if I didn't need to.
I'll start by saying that the burgers are very tasty and good. However the waitresses are majorly rude and ignorant. Whatever you do - do not go on a Saturday night - it is crazy packed and it makes for a miserable experience. The lights go in and out, everyone is very tightly seated, it's very noisy and the waitresses will bump you every chance they get without any apologies whatsoever. The parking is a total nightmare and the ambiance is not good enough to stay. If anything - if you cannot resist these burgers - do take out and save yourself the misery. I had the guacamole burger and my friends had the captain morgan and it was nicely prepared~so I'd recommend those.
Review Source:Perfect place to go when you're out with friends or even for a date. The daily happy hour specials are very reasonably priced and the quality of food is good and consistent. Usually you see the same staff, which may be an indicator of good management. The new patio addition is awesome during spring and summer months. Drake has a city tavern feel but has a private parking lot and way less traffic when trying to navigate the area. I'd call it a neighborhood gem that locals and folks who are just passing thru can enjoy. Their burgers are awesome and the Cajun chicken pasta is really delicious too.
Review Source:If you take a gander at my profile, I'm obviously not from anywhere near Pennsylvania. Â However, I married a Philly girl and periodically get to go visit. Â Cheese Steaks, Hoagies, Water (wooder) Ice... yeah, they have the market on those items cornered. Â But I had never been able to score a really good burger in PA until my bro-in-law took me to this place.
Bacon cheddar ranch burger... coronary on a bun, but you have to live a little sometimes! Â Awesome flavor and perfectly cooked. Â And ENORMOUS. Â I'm close to 6'3" (with my Timberlands on) and 240 lbs, and I couldn't finish more than half.
And the fact that they actually put the name of the restaurant on the top bun with a branding iron is flat out badass...
It has outdoor seating, which did us no good in January, but it is good to note for the summer months. Â And it has that good old college-town pub feeling to it.
I felt like I was at one of the numerous spots in Athens, GA during my UGA days.
Menu is actually a lot more extensive than burgers with mussels, seared tuna, etc.
You can find something for everyone.
I've driven by the Drake multiple times per week and never considered stopping in. I'm glad I did, and I'll be back - when I want a heavy, fried meal. (You know that happens every once in a while!)
I was working with a sales girl around Thanksgiving, who casually mentioned that she's vegetarian when I was making small talk about the recent holiday. We compared notes on our favorite restaurants, and she turned me on to the Drake. This tavern seems most popular for its burgers, and they do a mean veggie burger.
The patty was deep fried and scalding hot, but very good - almost like a hush puppy loaded with shredded carrots and other veggies. You can sub in a veggie patty on any of their specialty burgers (although there is an upcharge - a little ridiculous, as you should get a credit for saying hold the bacon). I really liked the Captain Morgan's, which was smothered in a sticky sweet sauce. We also ordered one plain, which was a little bland.
You can park on the street, and there's also a lot off of Greenwood and another off West (although you'll have to back straight out - you'll understand if you go there).
It's four stars as long as you come when they aren't busy or the staff isn't tired. We came at the end of dinner rush (around 8-9 pm), and our burgers came out overcooked and the bottom bun soggy.
But we came back during the week around normal dinner time and the experience was much better. The servers were attentive. We had a different person take our drink orders, bring us our drinks, take our food orders and bring us our food, but no real complaints because all four of them were nice and the food was timely. Our burgers came out done the way we asked and no sogginess! The no fries thing In another review is true, but just order the dirty chips as an appetizer and you really won't care.
It is located in a nice area with a beautiful outside setting to view the town. Â I ordered a burger and found that it was delicious. Â Perfectly cooked. Â I was amused that they stamped the restaurant's name to the bun. Â A nice little touch.
However, I was disappointed that my burger did not come with fries. Â This is America, right? Â You order a burger, isn't it commonsense that you will get fries with it. Â Nonetheless, I ordered a basket of fries and enjoyed them for the most part. Â They were extremely salty.
The beer selection was decent and the food menu looked appealing for future visits.
Drake is a fun place to kind of kick back and relax and grab something to eat. Â The food was good but nothing really stood out. Â It was nothing to come brag about but it was not bad. Â You can't go wrong with the O'Hara burger there. Â
Also, if you want to catch a sports game while eating, this is the place to go.
I was struggling between choosing 4 or 5 stars for the Drake, but I couldn't find a single reason that they didn't deserve the full 5.
Wings were delicious and meaty, and the spicy garlic sauce was a great take on the standard buffalo wing. French fries were salty and crunchy, not dripping grease.
My entree was fantastic -- the samurai tuna. My only complaint is that the tuna steak wasn't larger, but they sesame seed crust was tasty and they nailed my medium-rare request. Had never had fried spinach before, but it was light and delicious: the perfect crunch! Mashed potatoes were enjoyable and not overly creamy.
Dessert was the fried waffle sundae... wow. One helluva dessert, certainly not for one person. Worth every calorie.
Finally, beer selection was great. Enjoyed the Magic Hat Vinyl on tap and the Duvel Belgian bottled. Prices for the beers were veryyyyyy reasonable as well.
Simply no reason not to eat and drink here!
UPDATE: After such a fantastic meal the other day, I went back last night with high hopes. I couldn't have been more disappointed.
I ordered their steak and asked for medium rare. The waitress said "medium rare?" back to me just to make sure. Regardless, my steak came out at a pitiful gray medium well. When the portion of steak is disappointing as is, you better at least cook it right.
We also got the same dessert as the other night (waffle sundae), but this time got about half the portion: four people sharing a dessert and they gave us a quarter of a waffle. It costs next to nothing to make an entire waffle, but for some reason, they still felt it necessary to shortchange us.
Finally, our waitress was curt and inattentive all dinner long. I would've loved to leave my five-star review, but I was so turned off by the inconsistency of this place and their complete inability to cook a steak even close to properly that I decided to change my rating.
The food at Drake is usually very good. While a little on the pricey side, entrees (particulary the burgers) are well-seasoned and delicious. Be wary: only some of the burgers come with fries! The appetizers are underwhelming and overpriced, for typical fried bar fare.
Trivia Night on Wednesdays, which I've attended a handful of times, is sparsely populated. It isn't that challenging, and averages about 5-6 teams per week. Perhaps the dollar Bud Light isn't as much of a draw as the Flyers tickets offered for this Friday's Beirut tournament.
Drake's is a great place to kick back and chill without having to worry about getting shot (give me a break, I live in North Philly where it rains bullets...).
Whenever I come here, service is always prompt and courteous. Prices are reasonable and the burgers are never a disappointment. I recommend the O'Hara kobe beef burger for some awesome barbeque-y goodness! Yum.. Â I tend to get it medium well and it doesn't come out over-cooked, IMO.
While you are enjoying your meal and watching the games, be sure to order an Irish Carbomb while you're at it.
It's clearly been a while since I've been to The Drake for Happy Hour. No free buffet or drink specials anymore. Bummer. The only Happy Hour specials are a select handful of half-price appetizers that you can only order if you sit in the bar area and buy an alcoholic drink. And you better get there before 5:30 if you want that seat because it tends to fill up.
The appetizers I had were the chili nachos, cheesesteak spring rolls and saucy shrimp, all very good. The nachos were your standard bar nachos, the spring rolls had a really tasty ketchup sauce with them, and the shrimp was delicious. My only complaint is I think the half-price apps were half-sized as well. There were only two spring rolls (cut in half to make 4 pieces) and two, yes two, shrimp. This tends to irk me because it sounds like you're getting a deal with half-price apps but in reality, the portion is smaller so there's no deal at all. The service was fine and the drink prices were reasonable.
Even though I'm disappointed that they took the Happy Hour perks away, I did enjoy The Drake. Everyone I went with was happy with their food choices, the atmosphere and the prices.
I went there last Saturday night and the place was half empty. Â I got a burger on the menu with avocado and bacon. Â It was a disaster. Â Floppy and the meat had no taste. Â Plus, After dissecting it, I saw the meal was rare. Â I had ordered medium well. Â
The only game in Jenkintown except for gross Buckets dive bar.
Drake is basically another not-so-inspired "Irish pub." Â Decent food but nothing that will blow you away.
I went recently with a few people and we got the $20 app sampler...I would not recommend. Â Basically just a bunch of stuff thrown into a fryer (chicken fingers, wings, mozz sticks & the like) and then way overpriced. Â I would not reccoment that.
I had a burger that was fine...I thnik the highlight of my dining experience was the "Drake" stamp on my hamburger bun...pretty exciting. Â
Nice beer selection though...Warsteiner on tap! Â As a previous post said, I'd come here to drink, not to eat.
I liked the vibe and look of this place, but the food we had sucked. Â My friend ordered the tuna, seared, which came with mashed potatos and spinach. Â The tuna was waaaaaaaaaaay overcooked, flaky and pink, not a hint of red left in the thing. Â I went simple and ordered buffalo garlic wings, and I specified I wanted them crispy. Â Wings were not crispy, nor very flavorful, and there wasnt much buffalo sauce on them. Â Â
I'd go back and have a beer but I won't go back and eat. Â
Also, our waitress would disappear for 10 minutes at at time. Â I needed a refill on my drink and when she finally came back with the bill, when I was done eating, she finally got me one.
"Not bad" is the way I responded when someone asked me about my recent visit here.
An average selection of beers on tap, that alone may prevent me from going out of my way to go back. Â I did have an Oberon Ale, and that was the most creative beer on tap in my opinion. Â It was so-so, temp wise and flavor, maybe the taps could use a cleaning.
Although I did not get a burger (claimed to be a house specialty), my friends who both got one said they were "OK", did not look very big nor very juicy. Â I got the tuna with wasabi mashed, edible and fresh, but not a very good cut of tuna.
Overall, no need to go out of my way to go back, but I would stop if I was in the neighborhood until someone points out another place in Jenkintown worthy.
Oh, the outdoor seating was a plus.
Drake is a great place to hang out, put back a few glasses of happy-juice (take your choice) and catch up with friends.
I was on a quest for good french onion soup. Â I must say, Drake is in my top 3. Â Other favorite items: Salmon salad, Pepper Jack Burger, Chipotles Guacamole Burger, and the Drake's Crab Cake. Â Their monthly special menu is usually pretty good. Â Yesterday I had the Pear au Champagne salad - good stuff.
My fiancee and I arrived for dinner Friday evening. Â The place was very busy and we went to the bar to get a drink. Â After about 20 minutes we were seated at a table. Â
The Goods: Â We ordered the wings to split and I ordered a burger for my main meal. Â The wings were very good. Â The wings were crisp and the sauce was spicy and flavorful. Â The burger was the best I have feasted upon in quite awhile (at least since I last ate at Good Dog.) Â The beer selection was decent, with a couple of microbrews along with the common swill. Â This place would have received 4 stars judged on the cuisine alone.
The Bads: Â The waiter was ABYSMAL. Â My theory is that he was a Cro-Magnon man and was still acclimating to our service culture. Â He stopped by shortly after we sat down and then did not come back for almost 15 minutes to get our order. Â Thankfully we already had drinks or a major incident would have occurred. Â We had to flag him down to inform him we needed to order, since he did not ask. Â My glass was empty, on the edge of the table thirsting for beer for 10 minutes before he asked if I needed another drink. Â Our wings came out relatively late and our burgers followed up a few minutes later. Â Of course I had to ask for additional napkins for which I received beverage napkins.
Due top the strength of the food, I will try this place once more to see if the horrid service was an aberration or just the norm.
Edit: Â I have been back here a bunch of times and the bad service was a one time thing. Â I would recommend going here.
I decided to try the Drake one last time before I leave Montgomery County for a new and shiny job on the other side of the bridge. I figured with just ordering drinks this time, what could go wrong?
My friend and I ordered two different beers ... 5 minutes later, the server says they're out. We order two more. 5 minutes later, she says they're out of those two. "So what DO you have?" we asked, and the answer was 4 draft beers. Slim pickings, and those pickings were not things I would normally order and they were kind of pricey for beer, even during happy hour. Â
I'd just rather not deal with it anymore.
I've been a few times. A typical pub like experience.
The burgers are pretty good. The other food offerings are so, so.
I would not hesitate to go back to the establishment in the future.
Nothing great but nothing terrible either about the place.
An evening meal will be rather loud. I found a lunch time experience quiet and subdued.
This is the place to be on a Tuesday night! Start your night off with $2 pints of Yeungling during all Phillies games. Â As the game winds down, you can enjoy your free buffalo wings after 9 oclock. Â It gets crowded right before 9 so get there a little before if you want a shot at the first batch. Â
Also after 9, they have $1 well drinks until 11. Â And we found out last time that everyday they have $2 Miller Highlifes. Â Can it get any better than that? Â The "Champagne of Beer" for only 2 bucks. Â Great place to unwind on a weekday with some friends
My husband and I would probably go here more often if it was closer to us. It's not too far, but just enough to make us hit up Glenside Pub more often for our burgers and beers. If I was asked to compare burgers between the two pubs, the Drake would win hands down.
They have a creative selection of burgers and sandwiches and their Bacon Ranch Cheddar burger is like heaven. I have been here twice now and was seated quickly, although both times the place was jam-packed with customers. They serve you incredibly quickly which makes their turnover rates high and is probably why the wait is generally very short.
They do lose a star for ambience: the music is generally a bit too loud to hear oneself think (who blasts Michael Jackson, anyway?) Also, the tables are all very close together and this isn't New York, it's Jenkintown, people. The tables are so tightly packed that my brother had to move our entire table himself so the waitress could get by us and serve our neighboring table. That was a bit over the top. But worth it for the amazing burgers!
Stopped in here for a few beers the other night with a friend who lives in the area. It's an Irish Pub, which automatically gives it 5 stars in my book, but the music is way too loud and the stuff that was playing was all over the board - so I had to listen to crappy rap/house music along with some classic rock and everything else. Turns out it's the jukebox playing whatever random crap it chose. If they turned that crap down and replaced it with some good Irish music, that would make this place.
The Guinness isn't necessarily poured properly here, but they do pour it with a clover on the head which was cool. Parking is also a bit on the sparse side, but it doesn't help that folks around this area seem to be challenged fitting their cars between those two parking spot lines that seem to be there solely for decoration purposes.
I dont go here to eat, since there is not much vegetarian stuff on the menu. However, I go here to hang out with friends and watch a game. They all like what they eat!! The service is consistently good. Staff are attentive.
Oh, I did try the mozarella sticks...they are ok.
If I have to eat something, i just get the icecream. They have only two flavors (chocolate and vanilla). I get half of each flavor.
Gets really crowded on Friday nights as expected. This is a favored place for the locals in Jenkintown.
Pretty decent spot for the area, nice beer selection, food selection seemed nice but I didn't try anything. Having absolutely fabulous company helped, but otherwise this place is just alright.
Biggest downer is the absolutely deafening sound system...not sure if it is like that all the time, but when I was here (Friday night) it was just way, way too loud. Like dance club loud...only nobody is dancing, just sitting and trying to have a conversation. I saw more than one group of people come in, yell at eachother for a minute, and then leave. I mean, as much fun as this exchange can be:
"Its good to see you!"
"You bought an emu?"
It isn't how things should go. After a while they turned on the "club" lights, making it even more obnoxious and out of place. Service was friendly (if a bit slow), and prices weren't bad. I can't say I'm in a big hurry to go back, as it was rather draining. It is a nice, clean place, but they need to correct a few mistakes for it to be the go-to spot in the area.
Ode to The Drake-A Haiku
drinking fun outside
crazy sauce burger damn good
douche bag level high
Pros- I like their burgers a lot. You can have them made up in chicken, veggie patty, turkey, and I think buffalo too. Decent $2 bloody mary on Sundays.
Cons- Music does tend to be too loud and douchey. Non-beer special prices seem high. Any food, non burger related, has sucked.
I've had some very enjoyable nights drinking on the patio with a friend, but it does have a bit more of a "grown up frat boy hang out" than I usually like.
We just tried this out for a Saturday lunch. Really nice selection of interesting burgers and sandwiches. They'll even do any of their burgers with a veggie burger instead. I found plenty of things on the menu I'd like to come back for (including all you can eat mussels night on Monday for $10.99 or a crabcake special on Tuesdays).
My guy's burger was a bit greasier than intended and well undercooked from what he ordered. But the service was very good, my lunch was spot-on, and it was a cool, comfortable place to hang out.
Screens throughout the tavern tuned to sports, pics on the walls of rock stars and sports stars and plenty of neon beer signs. It's like hanging out in your friend's basement only with lots of windows. :)
The staff were having a real blast. They all seemed to really enjoy working there.
BEWARE: Their parking lot is small and is only accessible from the one-way section of Greenwood Ave. Also the meter maids in J-town are militant! You will get ticketed for parking illegally or if you meter runs out.
Other than that the bar is spacious, well lit, and has great food. Try their French Dip Roast Beef! Good stuff. They run frequent drink specials and the crowd tends to be a little older than in other bars in the Abington area.
My friend and I knew we were in for a good time at Drake's Tavern when, as we walked up to the front door, the tune that just started playing was Europe's The Final Countdown. Â We timed our entrance to the tunes catchy keyboard intro. Â Da-duh-da-da....duh-duh-duh-da-da. Â As soon as the drums kicked in, we kicked in the front door and went in playing our dual air guitars. Â All the twentysomethings in there (we're in our 40's) pretended they didn't see us as we sheepishly slunked to the bar. Â "Two buds" is all we muttered for the next ten minutes as we tried to compose ourselves. Â
Although my friend and I are two goofballs, the Drake is actually goofball friendly. Â Â Good food and a nice beer selection make this a nice stop before or after seeing a flick at the Hi-Way Theatre in downtown Jenkintown. Â It's also a great place to make a grand entrance. Â I'm hoping a Billy Squier tune is playing next time I stroll up to the front door.
I am a fan of the Irish and mostly because I am one. Â I search out the local Irish pubs whenever I visit a town. Â This weekend I located Drake's Tavern and I can say these folks get four stars. Â
Four not five but for one tiny reason, the restrooms could use a little work but mind that this is an Irish pub.
The food was  well prepared and in well stocked amounts.  The service was quick and mighty.  I hadn't even warmed my chair when all of a sudden I was asked what I would like to drink.  Once my drinks arrived, less than five minutes passed, that I was given the full monty on the menu and all the specials.  My waitress also warned me off one choice because these were running low and she mentioned the old line, "bottom of the barrel." Â
The atmosphere was cozy, comfortable and a little college in tone but in a good way.
Get this place a try ... and host a perfectly poured Guinness for me!
