Stopped at Dublin House for dinner before a show. Â We ate inside because it was hotter than hades the day we went. The restaurant is nice enough inside, casual and comfortable. They definitely need to shake up the kitchen. To begin with they had only one brand of Pinot Grigio and it was terrible - the kind of wine that makes you shiver when you take the first sip. Wish we had ordered a glass instead of a bottle. Â I had the crab cakes and my friend had the haddock special. Both meals were simply awful. My plate was almost untouched but the waiter never even asked if everything was satisfactory. We both tasted each other's entrees and agreed that the meals were almost inedible. Based on the dismal experience with the entrees we abandoned our plans to spilt the homemade Irish Cream cheesecake. We did not dare risk the disappointment for that one. I will not go back to DH
Review Source:The bar area is a bit narrow inside, but I really love the atmosphere - grab your drink and walk outside for outdoor seating if it's a balmy summer night. It's always been a pretty young crowd on the nights I've been there - lots of twenty-somethings milling about and getting drunk. There's free parking in the White Street lot after 6:00PM on weekdays and all day on Sundays.
Review Source:This review is for the brunch offered at Dublin House, not an overall review of the bar, just our experience at the Dublin House on a Sunday morning.
Quick Overview - very disappointing - I don't usually write Yelp reviews, but all it took was a recent trip for brunch to this place and I had to vent about the dissatisfying experience. There are not many brunch options in Red Bank (are we the only ones who are looking for a bloody mary and western omelet on the weekend?) but we will probably not be going back to Dublin House for it.
Current deal is $16 for one drink (bloody, mimosa, etc) and a breakfast entree. Three of the four in our group got breakfast and feelings ranged from meh to very disappointed. I'll start with the drinks. The bloody marys were downright terrible. Might have been the worst I've ever had. Way too much pepper, weak on the liquor, no garnish, and the overall bloody mix just wasn't good. Not only that, but the size of the drink was pretty small (something I didn't complain about because the drink was weak). My personal take of what DH should do: Put a little more effort into this very important brunch drink and make them "endless" - I'd be much more apt to pay $20 for brunch with an "endless" title to it, especially it was halfway decent.
I ordered the french toast. They were ok, but the syrup (which I had to request - it wasn't brought out with the meal) was in McDonalds-style single serve packaging. I'm not here expecting 5 star sort of stuff, but whenever you serve something that reminds your patron of McDonalds, you are doing something wrong. Worse than that the fruit that came with the meal had mold on it. Mold! I brought this up to our waitress. She replied sorry...and that was it. Another in our group ordered eggs over easy. They came out cooked all through and the yolk was hard. The three egg omelet from another was given a "meh" rating and they were particularly disappointed that no toast or english muffin came along with. 16 bucks for an awful bloody mary and food that was really not good at all. Do yourself a favor and go up the street to the Broadway Diner and get better food for half the price.
Service was not anything to write home about either. I was a server for a number of years and so I always give them a little bit of a break, but the overall service was just not good. Our waitress was friendly and maybe she was really busy, but we had to request our silverware, napkins, and syrup. Nothing was done when moldy portion of meal brought to her attention.
Once I saw mold on the fruit, I felt I needed to have a chat with the manager to let him/her know our overall dissatisfaction with how the meal was going. Low and behold...no manager on duty. So not only did our entire experience lack something, anything that would bring us back, but the one person we could talk to, who might have a hand in changing that so we would actually return, was not even on the premises.
We sat outside and it was a lovely morning. The ambiance was great. But all we could focus on what how bad every part of our breakfast was...from the drinks to the food to the service. Very disappointed. I really want to like this place because, like I said, there are very few brunch options in the area. This town is ripe for someone to come in and put some effort and their name behind the food and drink they actually serve to the patrons.
Best outside bar in the area. Absolutely love it in the nice weather. They have HARPS on tap which is a major plus because most bars in town don't! Great food also: pulled pork wrap is delicious. Great appetizers, sandwiches, even salads.
Even in the winter it's still a great hangout. Smaller bar but great crowd. Best for St patty's day and all the red bank events like the guinness oyster fest, as they put up their big tent and have the front area completely open with an outside bar besides their back bar!
I bumped this up to 3 stars because the service and atmosphere.
The food is a 2 for me.
I visited as a group of 4. Â The exterior seemed well kept, and the snow was shoveled so the walk ways were safe. Â [we visited the day after the snow storm] Â we were promptly greeted and sat right away. Â Though the seating was well worn, it was clean. Â The dining area was nice and cozy.
Our server came not long after we sat and started to look over the menu. Â The server was pleasant and took our drink order, which came quickly. Â A few Guinness's and soda's. Â My bf said the Guinness was good, served at the right temp. and was left to settle well before being topped off....even though he didn't see the pour, he could tell by tasting. Â [such a good Irish lad, lol]
We ordered the potato skins, Gaelic Chicken, Dublin House burger with mushrooms and swiss, and turkey ruben's. Â The potato skins were nice and crispy, but the bacon ontop was minimal, and the 2 on the end only got 1 or 2 crumbles of bacon - so the attention to detail fell short there. Â Friend said the Gaelic Chicken was good, Â my bf said The Dublin House burger was ok and cooked perfectly but nothing out of the ordinary or made it stand above the rest and was comparable to a "chain" restaurant burger. Â The turkey rubens were okay, clearly deli meat and the bread was very salty and greasy, I wonder if they used salted butter on the flat top to grill the bread. Â The fries weren't very crispy, which was disappointing.
I'd only come back if I'm in the area, but it won't be a destination restaurant for us, unfortunately. Â I wanted to like it more, as I was pleased with the cozy interior and the well separated dining area away from the patrons there to have drinks, but from what I've seen from the food vs. value - it just wasn't there for me.
I came here while visiting a friend and I was pleasantly surprised. We got dinner and some beers and the food wasn't bad at all. The corned beef sandwich was pretty tasty and they had a pretty good selection of beer. Since it was Christmas break when we went (and a Wed), we got to see some pretty loud and obnoxious college-age kids, so we knew we were definitely in Jersey.
Review Source:Probably the best place in Red Bank and around the area to grab a beer. Especially during the winter. I've heard they clean their tap lines once a week and I'd have to agree with that. I think I've had one of the best Guinnesses I've ever had here. They're not cheap at $6, but very worth it. Nice clean taste.
The atmosphere is a little all over the place; fun Christmas tree and lights during the winter and front and back patios. You've got all sorts of people frequenting this place. Older folk during the day, middle-age during the afternoon and evening, then by the time 9:00 rolls around, you've got quite the younger crowd, but such a mix it is: hipsters, jocks, hippies, freaks and geeks all having a great time.
(Forget the food altogether, unless you're desperately hungry. It's run of the mill bar food.)
Had drinks outside and like it. In the winter had some pints inside and had a great time. Sat outside for dinner and drinks in the summer and it was just as great a time.
The Dublin house is a great spot so there are obviously just a lot of haters or people who went here when their kitchy first choice had too long of a wait.
The menu is pretty diverse and has a lot of irish options but also sandwiches, pastas and entrees. The Irish burger with guinness cheddar, bacon and onions is great.
It's a good spot to kill a few hours. Â Have dinner, sit outside, enjoy a Magners then as it gets later decide if you want to hang out inside, out back or stay in the front at the dinner tables.
Just go, don't be lame and let the low reviews scare you.
Looking for a bite after a quirky movie in Red bank, we opted to try the Temple bar at the Dublin house.
Packed outside, so we had a quick bite inside at the bar.
Service is ok, not very friendly, but fine.
Pulled pork wrap was excellent, California chicken was good but lacking flavor. Fries not great. Overall just ok.
Managed to get seats outside later, much better scene- very friendly bar tenders, great music, a nice night in Red Bank. Â Go for the beer, eat only if really starved !
Wow - this dinner was horrible. I actually started up my Yelp account to write this review - that's how important it is for me to tell all of you to NOT GO HERE!
The service was pathetic. Our waitress was snarky and hadn't tasted any of the food (maybe she had the right idea). Anytime we asked her to bring water, drinks, ketchup, or anything that was part of her job, she was moody, sloppy, and was nearly slamming things on the table.
The worst part of the night came in the form of a crab cake sandwich. This crab must have been sitting for months because it tasted horribly fishy, and almost like chemicals. I only ate one bite of it, but felt sick the rest of the night.
Please don't go here. It looks quaint and the menu may look extensive, but you will be very disappointed!
Dublin House is a nice little spot in Red Bank. Â A couple of things we like: Parking, as in the big public lot right behind the restaurant. Â Outdoor Seating, in the summer Dublin offers a full outdoor bar. Â Reasonable Pricing, the price of drinks won't send you to the kitchen to wash dishes just to pay for your beers. Â Think $5 max for a pint on tap. Â Food is good too.
Will we return? Â Yes.
...flies flying around us, smells like wet dog when u walk in and the bar area, I got one water for my entire stay, never offered, and it was empty in the first 5 minutes... the wrap was bad, half was dry and all the sauce was in one side, it was bad... the ceasar salad was just all wet dressing...
its a nice atmosphere shame they didn't back it up with service or food
The Dublin House used to be my one of two places I frequented on the weekends when I used to live in Colts Neck. I still love visiting here whenever I am back at my second home for the weekend. It always has a good crew of people in there and the drinks are always good.
The Dublin house has three different bars you can order drinks at. There is the outside bar that is open in the summer time, the large first floor bar where most people go, and then the smaller bar tucked in the back room on the second floor. My favorite one is the outside one during the summer, but they close it in the winter and the first floor bar will be mobbed with people during the cold months. I have never had a problem with the service here and was always treated very well.
The bar food is not the best I have had but it is not the worst I have had either. The hot wings are pretty good and the nachos are large enough to share with another person. Its basically just your average bar food, so do not expect anything that will create miracles.
The drinks are priced fair and usually made with a little more of a kick than they would normally be, which is something I like. More bang for your buck. The Long Island Ice Tea's will beat you to death so use caution when consuming.
Overall I gave this place four stars because of the good service, the good drinks, the decent bar food, and mainly the repeated good experiences I have had going here before my Yelping days. This place is one of my go to places when I am back in the area and I would suggest it to anyone who finds themselves in Red Bank. It's better in the summer, but its still a good place.
First off, I suspect most of the people giving this place 1 star simply don't eat pub food. If you don't want bangers and mash or shepherd's pie, what are you doing in an Irish pub? Honestly, you wouldn't go to a Chinese resturaunt and order chicken nuggets.
That said, the Dublin house definatly has it's problems. Most annoying is the slow service. I don't like waiting 10 minutes for my Guinness. Also, the beer selection could be a little better, though it's still an improvement from most places. The beer is quite overpriced, at 6 bucks a pint.
However, the bangers and mash here is excelent, so I encourage those of you who usually get the less Irish fare to try this instead. Their Irish nachos is also fantastic. Really, the best time to go is on Monday, when they have their 10 dollar deals. 10 dollars for a meal and a beer is pretty damn good.
We had just spent day in Sandy Hook  (fun, but gray skies for basically the whole time). Drove down to Freehold to check out little stores and shops and ended up @ Dublin House.
We were there on a Monday night, so we all tried the $10 Taste of Ireland special...
I got shepard's pie and my hubby got Bangers 'n' Mash. My friend got the Gaelic chicken. Thought that food was pretty good and the $10 deal (with a free beer) can't be beat. We got the Irish nachos for an app...they were good but I could have done without them...
I liked the decor of the place....better than other Irish "pubs" I've been to.
Bathrooms seem oddly un-Irish and don't really fit in with the decor, but it didn't really matter to me...it's a bathroom, you know? In the main restaurant area, they need to repaint the ceiling though...it's pretty filthy:)
I guess you could say service was on the slower side, but it was crowded and the wait time didn't feel painfully long.
I'd go there again, but honestly, it would have to be for the Monday night special....from other people's reviews, I don't think it would be worth it to go on another evening and pay double for the food and beer...
This place is awful... Monmouth Country in general is so boring that this place seems like a good option for a night out.
The food is hit or miss. No vegetarian food except for pasta. The wraps are basically glorified salads. And, take everyone else's comments to heart - the service sucks to the 1000th degree. The worst part is the drink prices. To my crappy judgement I gave them the benefit and figured maybe they would have a good Irish Coffee. I was better off going home, making my own coffee, and putting my own liquor in it. Horrid drink!
But they have a cool patio and its in a house, so I guess it has that going for it?
I was so stoked when we got here since we walked in they had a rad outdoor bar and soccer was on the tv and smithwicks was on draft. We grabbed dinner outside with a large party and the night went down hill... Service was super slow, drinks were on the small side and they averaged about 30 minutes between coming back to the table from dropping anything off. It took forever to get the bill and the waiter didn't come back to pick it up. Eh, disappointing.
The only reason I gave it a 2 star was the food portion of night was decent. The baby aruegala  salad I had was huge and my boyfriend liked his California chicken sandwich.
This place has cool vibe but I think probably way better just to get drinks here than dinner.
Okay, nobody Yelps around here....seriously!
I couldn't locate a restaurant around the vicinity that had more than 30 reviews.
We tried to go to Carlo's O'Connor Mexican restaurant, but I don't know how Mexican it can be with an Irish surname. Carlo's was closed on Mondays and A was starving, so The Dublin House it is.
*sigh*
When we sat down outside, I thought to myself, this is not the kind of place to order "seafood". This is the places where you need to order things like fried or burger, but I wasn't in a mood for neither.
I ended up deciding to take my chance and ask the waitress, what's the most popular item. She mentioned the Turkey Burger and Penne Vodka.
Again, it was a hot sunny day, I am not going to get pasta or burger, so I inquired about the Crab crusted Tilapia with buttered vegetables. She's like I just had that yesterday and it's so good. I, then asked her what kind of vegetables comes with this entree. She looked at me confused and asked me what the menu said. I said, it says "buttered vegetables". Okay, if she just had this just yesterday and it's sooooooooooo good, how come she can't even remember that the dish came with vegetables?
So I am like moving on and I said how are the crabcakes here? She's like I eat that almost everyday. I asked her if it's fishy? She didn't have any clue what I was talking about when I asked that question and looked at me dazed and confused. I said, some places doesn't make good crabcakes and they can be fishy.
She's like I never heard of that and we don't bread our crabcakes here. I trusted her opinion, due to the fact she looked at me puzzled for even mentioning crabcakes can be on the fishy side.
We didn't get our food until forever and the service was SUPER DUPER slow. The place wasn't even busy!
A didn't trust getting salads here, so A got a Chicken Wrap. A said it was decent.
My Crabcake Po' Boy - disgusting. Yes, I knew it wasn't going to be a traditional Po' Boy, since their version is served on a brioche bread. There were no pickles within the Po' Boy and I didn't detect any Creole flavour.
Why did I order a Creole dish in an Irish restaurant?
Oh, yeah that waitress who told me she ate this everyday and how good and non fishy it was.
I want to say it was DAMN fishy.
The waitress palate is not up to standards to my standards.
She came over and asked me and I said, it's fishy and not good. But I told her it's okay, no worries. I guess she really didn't even try to make it better by offering any replacement.
Oh wells, I ate my okay tasting fries and called it a day.
0 STARS!
More popular than ever and lacking the character or yesteryear, I feel like this place lost something when they did a major renovation and cleaned it up, big-time. Â (or wait... maybe it's because they now charge a few bucks more per pint!!!???)
Still, I have a soft spot for this place. Â A good pint of Guiness for sure, and the food ain't half bad (I especially dig the Shep's Pies topped in cheese, yum). Â A must-stop if you're bar hopping Red Bank and want something more laid-back... but keep in mind it's getting trendier by the minute.
I think people need to acknowledge that 6$ for a pint isn't even always standard as a NEW YORK price...and this is New Jersey.
The bartender was a bitch who was disinterested in anyone coming in, unless they were male and flirtacious. It appeared common to hear her tell people to "fuck off" for no apparent reason, and she spent the majority of her time making bloody mary mix (which should be something that is prep BEFORE the opening of the bar, especially when the bar was packed for New Years Day). We couldn't get her attention for 20 minutes so we left.
The music was awful (celtic kitsch) and the enviroment fit this theme.
I suppose it's better to come in the summer when you can be outside.
I came back on a Friday night. Â I didn't chance it by sitting at a table for the waitress to come by because that worked out so well last time. Â Got a pint at the bar, still felt like I paid too much ($6 for a Smithwick's?!). Â Some things don't change.
The back patio was a nice atmosphere, people standing around or sitting at tables and some watching the game on tv. Â However I felt like a sheep in a pen -- the area is perfectly rectangular and fenced in, with 2 bouncers making sure we don't leave the premises with a drink in our hand(?).
It's a nice place, don't get me wrong, but too pricey.
Someone else wrote on here that the new remodeling job on the Dublin House looks like what someone from Disney World would think an Irish pub should look like...I couldn't agree more. Â While the building itself was in desperate need for some updating, I think it was done at the expense of the character that was embedded in the dingy walls and time-worn bar top. Â
If you're looking for something to eat, it would be prudent to drink about thirty beers beforehand because the food here sucks. Â Then again, if Irish food is the first thing to come to mind when thinking about amazing food, chances are you probably already had those thirty beers.
Now don't get me wrong...I still go to the Dub fairly frequently. Â The staff there have become friends of mine and it is a great place to have a couple drinks. Â Just don't expect to have fine dining in a drinking hall.
If not for the friendly bartender this would get less stars. Big plus is they constantly show soccer which I love! Food is eh. Had the corned beef melt and it was decent. My gf had the chicken wrap. She said it was ok but it was falling apart as she was eating it. Beers were cold. They even had Peroni on tap...yup an Italian beer which I love, in an Irish pub! Definitely check it out if you are in RB. Otherwise RB was an absolute waste of time and very disappointing despite my partner in crime.
Review Source:1.5 stars
The old Dublin I would have given 4 stars, but since the re-modeling it feels like what Disney World would think an Irish bar should look like. All the charm is gone of this great historic building, which is a real shame. The food is typical bar fare. Last time I was there they had taken "Suppers Ready" off the jukebox, so they really deserve one star. For better beer, better food, and a better crowd head down the street to Jamian's.
I'm not that crazy about the Dublin House yet I always seem to end up back here if I'm looking for a bar that is close by on the weekend. Recently remodelled, the Dublin House looks beautiful. The crowd is usually a mix of 20 somethings, 30 somethings and a handful of middle aged people.
In the summertime it's great to come here (early so you can a seat) and sit at a table out front with a pint of guiness (I prefer black and tan though) and people watch and hang out with friends.
It's right across from the Red Bank diner so you can get trashed then stumble across the street to get some food and sober up. That's a plus.
I might be coming from a town with too many options, but Dublin House just wouldn't cut it for me as a go-to bar. The Guinness is terrible, but that's not much of a surprise. The prices are like being in Manhattan, and the food seems a bit posh for a place that tries to be low-key.
I do like the outdoor seating, which has a good quality to it being in front instead of out back like most places. The people seemed very friendly as well.
The DUB! Red Banks finest traditional Irish Bar! Located in a huge Victorian house which is currently under major renovation, the bar is still open though... Large Long bar and restaurant downstairs, currently private room and small room w/ bar open to public on the weekends.
Wide grog (beer) selection, good grub and fun crowd. The way all the bars in RB should be ;)
Love ya Dub!
I've been to the Dublin House Pub a couple of times. It has an old feel when you walk into the joint. The first time I ate there I sat in the dining room area and wolfed down a Shepherd's Pie. It was not bad - but I've had better.
The second time I sat at the bar. The music was waaaaayyyyyyyyy to loud! And the cigarette smoke was disgusting. I finished my beer and my single malt and got the hell out of there.
I agree with Megan! Â She couldn't have explained it better. Â The Dublin House is surely a "homey" place to sit back with some close friends and chit chat while having a few drinks. Â The lighting is dim in certain areas, and it gives the sitting rooms a nice feel. Â It kinda makes you feel far from home, in which feels good sometimes during a night out.
