i rarely do one star reviews ,,,sadly i must for duke's. Â this is based on poor service. Â our waitress really didnt care about serving us at all. Â she didnt crack one smile the whole time we were there (about an hour) and she really didnt deserve the tip i left either. Â i hope the manager turns this place around, and i wish i had seen their yelp reviews before i went there...fries were pretty cold and chicken dry.
Review Source:Every time I've been to Dukes I've had great food........... fish n chips, burgers, salads, etc. Â This time was disgusting. Â Not sure if the cook was having an off day but I was REALLY disappointed. Â Fish n Chips- Â The fries tasted stale as if they had been sitting there all day. Â My fish had a "moldy" taste to it. Â I know, strange. Â My friend got a sandwich that was ok and her fries tasted stale as well. Â My gf had the chicken sandwich special and she said it was just ok. Â Boo, I really want to go back but now I'm afraid to. Â I'm sure we'll give it another try, in the hopes it was just a bad day.
Review Source:I'm going to Yelp about the food and TVs.
Great service.
The grilled shrimp salad rocked!
The TVs are nice and big so you can watch a game... but they were playing music, so you couldn't quite hear what was going on in the game.
Mid-Pricey... $12 burger... and I think my salad was $13. Â I highly recommend the salad, it was yummmmy!
Crappy joint. Went in there over a year ago and they had pregnant looking go-go dancers on the bar on a Friday night and standing room only Marines (eff that). Â Then I go back with a party of friends last weekend and the waitress acts like we are a problem for her and she is too busy for us (really, she was stuck up and angry the whole time), she was slow...the whole "what not to do when your job relies on tips" didn't sink in with this winner. Â The burger was a charred chunk of dried out lameness. Â Middle of the road for the dirty triangle. Ole's is across the street, so go there. Â And don't think about going next door to whatever that place is called, because that is also just Marines and 35 year old hispanic frumpies looking for their redneck of the night. Per the one star rating..."Eek! Methinks not". Â Not even my banana hammock and pirate hat saved the day. Lame.
Review Source:Oh dear. When you're a small bar in a small town, good customer interaction is a must - especially with 5 other bars within stumbling distance setting the standard pretty high.
I took my parents who were visiting from England, to watch football on a weekend during the day. My dad stood at the bar for over 5 minutes waiting for service (again, it wasn't busy) until the server eventually deigned to ask him what he wanted, and took plllenty of time to provide it after that. I was embarrassed, having hoped to give my parents a good first experience of California hospitality. Not to be found at Duke's, my friends.
Wanting to give Duke's another try before writing them off as a "don't-go-back" joint, I went with a few friends on St. Patty's Day. A stand-offish female server brought us stale reheated fries, below-average burgers and $6 pints (pretty good pints, providing the seond of my two-star rating, but overpriced). The place wasn't busy, unsurprisingly, even on the Saturday night we went.
In a word: bad. Try your luck at Ole's, Goody's or the Red Fox Lounge instead.
I've only had food here once and it was decent, nothing too amazing or brag about. Â I've been here only twice with friends. I do like the pool tables, very nice. I dont like the service, or their beer prices. After a long days work and i just want a beer and hang out, i dont expect to pay $6 for a damn Fat Tire. Thats crazy expensive for that beer. I would try to just make it to their happy hour if i do end up comming back.
Review Source:I'm a local in San Clemente. I took my parents here when they visited because they had pool tables and it was quite. I initially went to Ole's, but my parents and I didn't enjoy the loud metallic music. The Beer and food are way too overpriced! Food was lousy. I ordered mild chicken wings and they gave us super spicy wings. Calamari was soggy. I wouldn't come back.
Review Source:Maybe I just got a lousy first impression, but I wasn't completely thrilled with my experience here. The server seemed a little...not-so-nice. Maybe she was just having bad day. The food wasn't horrible. It was good, actually. But just good. Nothing remarkable.
They do have a pretty good bar-scene going on here on Friday nights. The Friday night I went, there was also a great DJ to pump up the energy. I'm not sure if the club-atmosphere transformation goes on weekly, but if it does, I would like to come back and give Duke's another chance to "wow" me.
I came here with my Southern boyfriend on our way down to San Diego. Â We loved their wings and I had a great chicken bowl. Â The boyfriend got some sort of gigantic fish burrito, which looked pretty great, but there was no way he could finish it. Â Like many great California bars, they have Fire Rock beer, which I just love, but can't get out in Chicago, where I've lived for a few years. Â Go! Â Eat wings! Â Enjoy Fire Rock! Â You won't regret it.
Review Source:Dukes is probably the worst bar / worst run bar that I've ever set foot in. I've gave it a second and third chance because I keep telling myself that it really can't be that bad, but every time I've gone back I've had a worse experience than the time before!
So let's start at the beginning... the first time I went there I asked for a round of Washington apple shots and I got apple puckers shaken over ice. I had to ask the huge 30 something bartender with tribal tattoos, "what else goes in this?" as if I was talking to a kindergartner; eventually we "Learned" how to make some shots! Not that big of a deal and I had an ok time.
Second Visit: I asked for Johnny Walker Black and the girl tending bar quickly replied, "we don't have that." Even though If she had taken one big step backwards it would have hit her in the back of the head. I said that I thought they had it and could she please have a look real quick. She went looking through the vodka and liqueurs at that point I felt bad so I pointed it out to her. I noticed she was hunting around for it on the computer for a minute, but quickly gave up and rang me up for a well bourbon at $6 so I left my tab open and had about three since she was pouring heavy it was probably cheeper than buying it at costco.
The last time I went there will be the very last time I ever go there... The bar manager (Robert) was trying to help out, I gave him a drink order two simple drinks and rather than take my card and make them, he yelled at me to group my order together to help them speed things up. I looked at the people to my left and right and said that I didn't know any of them and I would just take the drinks for my girlfriend and I. He gave me a dirty look and a few minutes later came back with the drinks. Left my tab open for a bit, but it was crowded so rather than get a second round I went to close my tab. They couldn't find my card and all the bartenders were completely disorganized, over at the POS system there were checks cards and money all in a huge pile I was like FML! After about 30 minutes I got my card back and it had about 14 drinks charged on it, double FML!! After being yelled at numerous times and treated like an a-hole I finally got the correct tab. A week later the other charges we reimbursed.
I understand how this kind of thing periodically happens at bars when everyone is drinking, but I was sober and polite the whole time. There is no excuse for the way I was treated and let alone by the manager.
Oh Duke, you sexy beast!
I could hear the fun being had on a Friday night all the way over to our room at the Holiday Inn. Â Couldn't wait til Saturday night when it would be our turn! Â We woke up Saturday morning to the chime of all the beer bottles being rolled into the recycle bin in the alley. Â "aww, tomorrow those bottles will be ours"
Alas, I had so much fun at my cousin's wedding that by the time we got to Duke's on Saturday night all I remember is the music was good, we got our drinks pretty quickly & good times were had. Â
Security was on top of it too because I also have a vague recollection of some guy talking to me about the weather and then my boyfriend talked to him for a little - then in a flash a guy standing near us was kicking his butt for saying something rude and a beer got dumped on my boyfriend. Â haha
Still not totally sure what happened, but security had that guy outside before we could even look around for a napkin or 500 to wipe up the beer on his shirt, pants and shoes. Â Good times...
Enjoyed lunch and some college football. Good food (burgers, fries, salads) and good service. Nothing *spectacular*, but still good, reasonably priced food, and decent service. If you're looking for a good burger, relaxed atmosphere and acceptable service, Duke's should be on your list of options.
Review Source:Good atmosphere, friendly server and bartender. Burgers were huge, tasty, juicy, had a side salad which was really really great. My complaints, the food took FOREVER to arrive, we were starving so it seemed like an eternity, it was more than 25 minutes after we ordered until it was delivered. We were then disappointed because they were not hot, interestingly enough, I could see the kitchen window from our booth and the burgers were picked up as soon as they hit the line, but they were not even warm...when our server came by to check on us, we told her they were tasty but not hot, she was surprised and apologetic and offered to take them back, we declined that offer because they were good and we were hungry:). Beer was not super cold either. I would totally go back, and if the burgers are hot next time I will give 'em another star;)
Review Source:Had lunch here the other day. Burger, fries, and beer. The burger was big, juicy and just fine.
There were a few old timers eating lunch in here too and a couple younger guys playing pool. Service was very friendly but a little slow.
My experience here was good but about as memorable and exciting as this review.
I have a tote bag bearing Duke's logo, and after all the changes this restaurant has been through, seriously, it's like a horse of a different color in Wizard of Oz, I'm still proud to carry it around the country with me as my carry-on bag.
Back in the old days, Duke's was a great locale for some Photo Hunt, Jaegah bombs (yes I mispelled it on purpose), and hanging out with quintessential San Clemente locals. It went on this way for a while, until some crazy drama went down and new management turned it into the Reno Room (which just sounds vulgar). Can't tell you much about it during that brief stint - kind of like when one of your good friends goes AWOL and all the sudden they're back in your life. You heard some bad stories, but you don't question them upon their return.
Safe to say, ladies and gentlemen, Duke's is once more Duke's. Does it have the same swagger that the original one did? No, not really. Is the food amazing? Meh, I've had better. But is it a good place to watch a ball game, play pool, listen to live music (on occasion), and eat some bar grub? You bet. In addition, you're in the middle of San Clemente's downtown area, so you can always walk to the bar, Goody's, across the street if a bar fight breaks out, which it probably will. In fact, you can also always to Duke's if a bar fight/drunk & disorderly incident breaks out across the street at Goody's, which it probably will.
We used to go here all the time during college, and that's a pretty good indicator of the age of the crowd and also the inebriation level.
Love the bartenders here. These guys are awesome!
Exactly as expected. Â A quasi-festive bar n' grill atmosphere, friendly and attentive service and run-of-the-mill bar food. Â A couple of pool tables too. Â Matt V's drunken Marines were mercifully absent, and the gender mix was about 50/50. Â All in all, a comfortable place to hang out, and within a stone's throw of three other taverns (Goody's, Red Fox and Ole's) if you're in the mood for bar hopping.
Review Source:This was my first visit since they remodeled and brought the original crew back. Â The layout is accommodating with pool tables in the back, tables and booths up front, and a comfortable bar with plenty of beer on tap. Â If you're looking to catch the game, they've got wall to wall flat screens for your viewing pleasure.
The bartenders were very cool and attentive, the waitresses were good looking and friendly, and my flat iron steak was perfect. Â Great wings, too. Â We will definitely be regulars.
