My husband and I used to drive to LBI just to go here for dinner or we'd stop after a day at the beach. That was back in the '70's. I haven't been there for a very long time so last night my son and I went. He had sea bass that was covered in a cream sauce. He liked it but I tasted it and didn't think it was very good. I had the sauerbrauten with spatzel and red cabbage. The cabbage and noodles were very good. The sauerbrauten seemed just to be pot roast covered in a sour-sweet sauce. That's not real sauerbrauten! It should be marinated for days and the meat itself should be quite sour. It was ok and again my son liked it but I know what it should taste like and this ain't it. Also I have 2 identical pending charges on my card for the bill. i called to resolve it and am waiting right now for them to call me back after they check.

    Service was bad
Came in early but was never told that there was an early bird special until way after we ordered and next door table was told about specials and early bird special
Onion soup and Weiner schnitzel was excellent
Never got salad that was ordered
When manager was told about these complaints they were oh so kind to remove charge for what we weren't served
We were told that the early bird is only upon request
    Lie
But the veal was really good

I was really looking forward to some weinerschnitzel and other German specialties. As I explained to Tim ( the manager?) last evening, the food was bland and awful. Tim's response was bordering on apathetic and condescending; no remedy was offered. Perhaps if the menu were more focused and in accordance with  the restaurant's German orientation, the food would have been decent. It's really a shame, this place has all the potential in the world!! The journey to get there, the reception and ambiance as we arrived and the jukebox made me really excited to have chosen this restaurant.
The best part of our experience was our very pleasant and accommodating waitress (Kerry) and the EXCELLENT appletinis.

Food was good. Basic. Not quite a German as I expected. But the service was abominable.  My lunch was a 2 hour lunch during a non-busy day.

This place sits on the Beach Haven bridge connecting to Long Beach Island. The location is unreal, with spectacular views of the bay and boat parking with a dock outside at the Quelle (outside bar and crab deck). On a nice day you can see clear across the bay and see boats skimming outside the windows. Reservations on a weekend are recommended but weekdays you might want to make one as well seeing this place was busy. The inside of the place looks a bit dated, needs an upgrade but at the same time is the charm of the place. Very large interior bar and being a German restaurant, of course they have some nice beers on tap. The staff is some of the friendliest and fastest I have seen, welcoming you into the place and assisting every step of the way.

The menu of course is a mix of German selections along with seafood and pasta and steak. There is plenty of Schnitzel to be found done in many ways and bratwurst and German side dishes. The portions are hearty and quite large. The Wiener Schnitzel was delicious and breaded nicely with a side of spaetzle and red cabbage. The portion was so large I could not even finish it. I tried the Knockwurst and it was equally as good. Prices were reasonable and for the amount of food you get, well worth it. In all not a bad place and the view alone made it worth it.

Dutchman's:  the food maybe average overall, but their veal cutlet are the best I have ever had.  Crispy outside, tender inside. I said to my friend, I don't even like veal that much (friend does and makes me taste it everywhere we go) but I order it here.  Stay away from the seafood.  I understand now what people mean when they say it smells fishy.  It means it is NOT FRESH.  I sent my dish of shrimp and scallops in cream sauce over pasta right back.  Service very good.  Decor, dark and dingy.  3 stars.

Quelle:  I agree with Ryan in that the choices of food are abysmally limited.  You can literally get like 6 or 7 things.  I happened to see some specials that the waitres had written on her pad and asked about them or I would never have known they were available.  Service was not good, we had to go get her to order another drink after half an hour wait for her to return.  We went for lunch on a beautiful day and lets face it, they locale and the view are the draw.  It's a shame because they have the full Dutchman's kitchen and access to a full menu, and they offer like a hamburger.  They offer things priced by the piece like $2 for an oyster.  So we ordered a dozen oysters and what we got was 6 oyster and 6 clams.  When I pointed it out to the waitress she said, oh, yeah, I heard about that.  What does that mean?  Well, it means we paid $2 each for 6 clams.  And to top it off, she told us it was cash only at the bar (they take cards in the restaurant) because the people who drive their boats up to the dock were jumping back in their boats and running off without paying the bill.  Okay...  Food, Service, ease of payment: 1 star.  View: 3 Stars.

Great View, and always a good time.

Most of the times I have been here, I have been to the Quelle, the bar outside. It is always crowded, and everyone seems to be having a good time.  It's a mixed crowd - folks of all ages, locals and tourists.

I've had mostly appetizers here - or the bar menu - the pretzel is great, and so is the cold fried chicken.

I've also had dinner in the dining room. The food is traditional German fare, and is good - nothing to knock your socks off.

The prices at the bar are not cheap. But, for LBI, they aren't out of line.

Stop here for the view, have a few drinks - it is an LBI tradition.

    Cheers.

For the Quelle only......The highlights after going there literally 100+ times over 15 years - great outdoor seating with bay views, tasty beers, pulled pork sandwich is very good, one of the few places in this area you can dock your boat and chill.  Get to watch the novices play bumper boats too when docking which is always fun.

The lowlights.....overall service below average here.  If you know that before you go, you deal with it.  If you're in a hurry, don't go.  One tip - order your next drink before the current one is done.  You won't die of thirst that way in the summer sun.  We had a server quit mid-shift on us here - and it wasn't because of us.  We found out when trying to find her to settle out our bill.  Cash only too btw.  Beers and food are pricey but not too out of line with LBI rates.

Last visit there we sat for 20 minutes with only half of the tables filled and noone came over to take our drink order.  We left and not sure we'll go back at all next year.  Shame for them b/c every trip there we'd drop over $100 easily.

We decided to head here for a change of pace and get some German food. Entering the restaurant was a bit awkward because you have to walk through the bar to get to the host. Decor was extremely outdated. Menu was interested because of the German selections but the food was somewhat underwhelming. Homemade pretzels were the highlight of the meal. Glad we went though.

I'm reviewing the Quelle, the outside bar at the Brauhaus. I wanted this place to be a lot better than it was because the name of the place is just so fun to say.

However, for a "Brauhaus", their selection of german beers is minimal and diverse (aka non mainstream beer I can already find elsewhere). I wanted to find some better items on their menu.

Did you know their kitchen is shared with the actual restaurant?

Did you also know that you can only get like 8 things to eat at the bar even though the kitchen is the same? I definitely would have spent more money on food (and likely beer as well) if they had better food available outside.

Aside from the waitresses, who were pretty friendly and extremely attentive, there wasn't much to write home about with this place and I don't see myself returning in the future.

This is more of a review of the Quelle, the outside deck of the Dutchmans.  Ya know I used to love this place.  You could pull the skis up to the docks for a cold Weiss or Dab ( you still can ) but for some reason they changed the menu or at least how they make things.  I would always get the buffalo shrimp...mmm mmm mmm but recently they changed the sauce and added a lot of cumin to it.  No sir I don't like it. I don't like it one bit.  The oysters were very good and they added grouper which is my very bestest favorite fish (I know bestest yeah yeah). Remember it is cash only and it ain't cheap.  I still give it a three star because after sucking down salt spray at 70mph for hours on end a cold one is very nice..............

Always a good place to eat, new menu is great and affordable.  They also cater parties, weddings, etc.  Good prices, I'm having my reception here in September.  Dave is the new person in charge and he has a lot of good ideas to keep this place alive.

Apparently the "authentic German pretzels" are what makes this restaurant so brilliant. REALLY?? pretzels?

The Brauhaus has a beautiful view while you eat and is the best part of this establishment. We ordered a cheese and meat appetizer and it came out with a plate full (the way granny would host during her bingo events) of meats and cheeses with a toothpick in each. There weren't any spreads or crackers, just meat and cheddar cheese. Hmmm, okay well my fridge is stocked and I doubt I'm touching that mess.

The Polka Dot Reisling wine was on point with my lobster bisque soup. If I didn't want to embarrass my company I'd kill a bottle of that and then take a cozy little nap.

All jokes aside, the food isn't THAT magnificent and for as pricey as it was you could easily go to an even better seafood or German food elsewhere. It was sad and disappointing.

So another World Cup adventure...(yawn). Actually it was a good game Germany for 3rd place at a German place.

I actually went to the Quelle which is the bar outside. It is a nice nice bar with a good selection of German beers (Hofbrau Munich nice). We had the handmade pretzels which would have been better without all of the butter. The German Wiener was really good (no snickering). The burgers looked fantastic my friend had an awesome looking one. My g/f had the fish and chips which looked delicious and weren't ridiculously large.
My only complaint was no credit cards.....it's 2010 man I don't have cash.

I don't know how the bar is at Dutchman's, but my family and I went to The Dutchman's Brauhaus while on vacation at Long Beach Island and we had a terrible experience.  I honestly don't even know where to begin.

The menu is very limited, even with their German food selections.  Four members of my family ordered a pork dish and all four of them said the pork was tough and difficult to eat, not tender like pork should be.  The mashed potatoes that came on the side of the dish tasted like instant mashed potatoes out of a box, not fresh ones.  For $24 a plate, you can imagine my family's disappointment.  Additionally, each person who ordered Blue Cheese dressing for their salads that came with the entrees was surprised with a charge of (about) $1.25 per salad for the dressing, which isn't mentioned on the menu ANYWHERE, nor did the waitress mention it when she took our orders.

My sister ordered a Caesar salad that was equivalent in quality to a bagged Caesar salad mix you would pick up at the food store, and was charged $9 for it.  I ordered a beef stew which was decent, but not the best thing I've ever ate and not worth the $20 it cost.  Not to mention that it was cold when it arrived because our waitress brought out half the food, disappeared for 5 minutes, then came back with the rest.

Also, for the price of the food, the restaurant's ambiance does not match at all.  The dips and spreads were served in plastic souffle cups that my mom uses to serve elementary school children in her kitchen.  There were paper placemats at every place instead of a nice cloth. For $20-40 a person, you'd expect something a little nicer...at least I do.

Our waitress rarely checked on us except to fill up our water glasses.  When my family expressed disappointments in the food to the staff, the waitress and manager were both very reluctant to do anything to make up for it and held us up almost 30 minutes arguing with my mom about how the restaurant has been around for 40 years.  It doesn't matter how long your restaurant has been open, just make good food and when a customer complains, apologize and try to make it up to them, which the staff at Dutchman's did not do.

For the amount of money you can spend on mediocre German food at Dutchman's, you can go to a nice restaurant in Manahawkin or Long Beach Island and get a delicious meal with a friendly waitstaff.

The Dutchman's Brauhaus is really two establishments: the German-themed Brauhaus and the outdoor bar/restaurant The Quelle. They share the same kitchen and view.

Brauhaus: good German food, good selection of German beers on tap, attentive bartenders, good service, and shares the same view (inside looking out) as the Quelle. Older, more reserved dining crowd. And as noted by Ashley R., looks a dingy at times.

Quelle: outdoor bar/restaurant with a smaller selection of food as the Brauhuas - clams on the 1/2-shell are great, and the same great knockwurts and bratwurst from the main restaurant are here. What really sets the Quelle apart is its location and the bar staff which is attentive, informative and funny - everything you want in a bartender. Sit and have a beer or two, watch the waverunners and boats, and more than a few hours will go by

The Quelle is a great place to grab a beer, or two or three...and maybe a shot...or two...before you head out anywhere else. (Although I usually go to the Quelle with the intentions of going elsewhere after a couple beers, I usually end up staying all night for reasons stated above and for the awesome staff)
The bartenders are wonderful. Mikey will always take care of you no matter what you need. It's a smaller bar, so everyone seems to know everyone else, and if they don't, they'll get to know everyone there. Lots of locals hang here.
The atmosphere is great: the bar is outdoors and overlooks the bay. The beer selection is great. You can drive a boat or a wave runner up to it, that's pretty sweet.
I've eaten at Dutchman's once or twice before. The place itself is a bit dingy, but overall the food is pretty decent.

The beauty of The Quelle is truly it's location over looking the bay just of the main land of Long Beach Island, NJ.  The food can range from oysters, to cold fried chicken, authentic German pretzels, jumbo shrimp to regular bar food and drinks.  People can come by boat, jet ski or by car.  It really is refreshing sitting out overlooking the bay.  The only downfall is the wait help are not so reliable.  On two out of three visits we had A1 service.  Service, if you hit it right not so bad.  Food, good. View=priceless!

It seems like this place has been here longer than the atlantic ocean/barnegat bay it sits on has.  Excellent german food, and great views of the bay!

I was just at Dutchman's for the first time since probably 1988, when I was a kid and ate here with my parents.  I couldn't remember anything about this place from my first visit, except the fact that you can't miss it on the left hand side before you drive over the bridge onto Long Beach Island.

This time I stopped in to meet some peeps for Happy Hour on my way (off the island) back home.  They have a bunch of seating inside for lunch/dinner and a full bar. Outside, however, is where it's at - another bar and some more tables, but now you're right on the bay, feelin the breeze, and chugging something German.  Ok, so how about I get to the beer already - what's on tap?  Well, they have Dortmunder Light and Dark, Paulaner Weiss, Amstel Light, Smithwicks, Harp and I think there might be one or two others that I can't remember.  Bottles include: Hacker Pschorr Weiss, DAB, Warsteiner, Pilsner Urquell, St Pauli Girl, Fosters, and some of the usuals.

I can't speak for the food, as I didn't eat, but my friends were sucking down some oysters and clams on the 1/2 shell, and I saw a bunch of people chomping down on some good ole Wiener/Jager Schnitzel and Knockwurst/Bratwurst.  Check it out for yourself - if you're not into the food, I promise you'll be into the beer.
