My family and I fell in love with this place on a previous trip to Charleston. Â Our last morning in town, stopped in here and had a fabulous latte and delicious pastries. Â Why had we not stumbled upon this place earlier in our trip!?
As you can imagine, on our last visit to Charleston we frequented East Bay Meeting House. Â This slightly formal French themed coffee house in the morning transforms into a trendy desert & adult beverage establishment at night. Â We were regulars for breakfast, but when strolling by one evening there solo guitar/singer act. Â The place was packed with carefree people enjoying good wine and music.
For breakfast, there is actually a full menu. Â It has standards like egg + breakfast meat + cheese on a croissant, but also features more unique items such as croissant french toast and quiches. Â On Memorial Day they featured several specials including crepes and fresh fruit with your choice of pastry creme or Nutella. Â There were also waffles piled high with fresh berries and whipped cream. Â Everything is made to order, the service is laid back (you don't feel rushed), but attentive and courteous at the same time - a hard dynamic to achieve.
The Italian sodas they offer are quite refreshing to sip on while strolling along Waterfront park (which is just down the block!). Â The TV above the bar is always on the classic movie channel, and I wouldn't be surprised if one of the great if Katherine or Audrey came through the door.
The Latte's deserve their own paragraph. Â Foamed to perfection, with the perfect blend of sweetness and espresso. Â The hot chocolate is to die for as well, since they make it the way it should be made: sans pre-packaged packets of chocolate dust.
If you're in the area (or even if you're not) make it a point to frequent the Meeting House.
After strolling the streets of Charleston all day we needed a break and mid afternoon caffeine pick-me-up. We settled on East Bay Meeting House because the the nice open door restaurant sitting, we sat right next to the sidewalk and could still enjoy the outside while being in. We ordered 2 large cappuccinos since they were only $.25 more than the regular.. We were a little disappointed when we got them in large disposable paper cups (sort of takes away the cafe culture ambience but whatever). They were okay.. No Black Tap cappuccino or anything. It was happy hour so we probably should have gotten a drink instead and just enjoyed the scenery.
Review Source:Lovely... not a word that typically finds its way into my vernacular however seems to be the right word i would use for a little eclectic french/spanish/moroccan cafe where evidentially poetry readings are the norm. Stopped in late night...outstanding regular no frills coffee...and cant speak for all of the food, however the creme brulee (did i spell that right?) was amazing. Owner seemed to really enjoy being there... stay at the vendue and stop in for coffee and dessert!
Review Source:Great coffee and a classy cozy atmosphere. Â The white chocolate mocha is amazing ( I get it with soy milk). Â I haven't eaten here yet, but they have tapas, a coffee menu, a full bar, a good size dessert selection, and I believe they also have some breakfast items. Â The food looks really good, from peeking over to neighbor's plates. Â Of the few coffee shops within a three block radius, this is by far the best one I have encountered, especially for quality. Â It is a little pricey, but not bad. The people are friendly as well.
Review Source:Accidentally ended up here on open mic night, and was specifically instructed not to talk and just watch/listen during the event. Â Would have been okay with this had I been warned prior to sitting down with a friend and glass of wine. Â
Cool place, decent food, weird crowd. Â I will not be back.
A gem of a breakfast and coffee nook with a bar to boot? Â This must be Charleston.
Tucked into the corner of a building in the French Quarter part of East Bay Street, this open air cafe has only a handful of small tables inside and out. Â You are just as likely to see locals stopping in as a few tourists recovering from the action of the night before.
A small menu has a number of options for both espresso drinks and brewed coffees or teas. Â Like the great caffeinated chains, you have a choice of small, medium, and large drinks. Â For my part, I found the brewed coffee to be very flavorful and the portion sizes generous as they were served in deep ceramic mugs that kept everything warm and left plenty of room for cream and sugar.
A number of house-made pastries and other baked goods lay on a platter at the corner of the bar and demand attention. Â Order one and they take it back to the oven to be warmed to piping hot just before serving. Â The cranberry/orange scone I had was perfect for a small breakfast.
Bigger appetites will appreciate the french toast. Â Day-old croissants are used as a base and then drenched in egg and cooked to a perfect texture between creamy smooth and firm. Â Talk about rich? Â Add powdered sugar and syrup and you have a breakfast for champions. Â
Service was relaxed and informal and there is never a rush. Â This spot is great for meet-ups before bigger adventures, or just recovering and reliving those from the evening before.
The atmosphere here was charming enough and the location of the cafe, bar, lounge was convenient. The reviews on yelp seemed decent enough to give the place a shot. So a few friends and I decided to come here so a few can have coffee and others could have cocktails. The guy who took our order seemed to be the owner but just did not seem like he spent his days there on a regular bases. He was throwing off the other waitresses and seemed to be reprimanding them everytime I turned my head to see when our drinks were going to arrive. He took one order and the then went to get that drink and then came back to get the order of the rest of the table. It just seemed odd. Maybe it was just an off night but with all Charleston has to offer an off night is unacceptable because you may never get a second chance to redeem yourself.
Review Source:This is a charming cafe with great happy hour deals. After a day of walking around Charleston, we were ready to relax and have a drink, and East Bay was perfect. $4/glass for select (decent) wines at happy hour, plus good service and a pleasant atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle. We didn't eat anything so I can't comment on the food.
Review Source:Service was a little slow due to a busy lunchtime crowd. Â The manager made up for it with glasses of champagne. Â I ordered a delicious chicken pesto panini, which must have been coated in butter or oil or some kind of addictive chemical before it hit the toaster. Â i couldn't stop eating the giant sandwich.
Review Source:My fiance and I stopped in for a drink recently, and though I love the cafe/bar concept, I was a little put off by the fact that it was nearly impossible to sit at the bar because there was so much stuff on top of it-- signs, stuff for sale, etc. There were maybe three spots at the entire bar with actual counter space in front of them, and those were occupied. This wasn't a huge problem, because there were tables available, but it would have been nice to have the option of sitting at the bar.
Review Source:Was there tonight for Happy Hour tonight. Wines at $4.50 are an excellent value. You can get 8 glasses of wine on the menu for the $4.50 price from all over the world -- Argentina, California, New Zealand, etc. A very classy place and classically elegant. Again, a  great value for Happy Hour!
Review Source:I was an avid customer at their previous location and I love the comfortable elegance of the new one. The two are right across from each other. I was pleased to find that the new location conveys the same welcoming atmosphere to an eclectic assortment of locals and tourists alike that appreciate a soothing but vibrant meeting house. Drinks, both from the bar and the coffee menu are top notch, food is wonderful and the staff always friendly. This time I tried the homemade granola that was promised to be the best I ever had by the owner, Robin. He was right! It was amazing! Wonderful Port on the menu as well. Can't wait to go back.

As a frequent visitor to the East Bay Meeting House. Â I am always greeted cheerfully and treated well . There are few places in downtown Charleston to get a good cup of gourmet coffee, a latte, pastry, or dessert, and this is one of them. Anyone looking for a place to sit back and enjoy a drink should check this place out.
Review Source:If you are looking for a great latte, this is not the place. I had a feeling I should not get an espresso drink here when I saw that the portafilters were not in the machine but I purchased a drink anyway. The latte was absolutely flat, no texture at all, looked more like a cafe au lait than a latte. I could not drink it.
Review Source:Mister and I walked, walked and walked all over Charleston yesterday, after the Fort Sumter tour and we worked up SUCH a hunger! Â We headed to Poogans but it was 5:00, too late for lunch- BOO. Â
So we were on Queen Street, headed to our hotel, Harbourview Inn on Vendue Range when we spied this sweet little place across the street from a bunch of boozy bars.
We were happily surprised by this place- it's a sunlit room with a bar at the side and a happy relaxed vibe. Â The owner is warm and attentive. Â We sat at a table by an open window and ordered the Spinach dip with Pita and the Tomato with Mozarella plate. Â I enjoyed a glass of white wine while Mister sucked down a Bloody Mary- it was Happy Hour!
We chatted up the owner and told him it was our 1 year anniversary, so he congratulated us with glasses of Champagne- sweet! Â I definitely recommend East Bay as a place to relax and unwind. Â They play wonderful music (Pink Martini) and the room is just snazzy- especially the lamps on the bar!
So after the first night visiting places like Light and the Roof Top bar and drinking WAY too much, the next morning....well it was almost the afternoon, my friends and I needed food and a little "hair of the dog"...well maybe a lot of "hair of the dog". Â The interesting thing is many places don't do brunch on Saturday. Â Places are either eateries or bars...not much else.
Thanks god we found this little gem of a place. Â Small, quaint, friendly staff and good prices, it has a very European feel to it. Â Though the menu is limited, all I really needed was a little food and 3...well 4 mimosas and I was right as rain!
Saturday morning and want a little something to start your day....then East Bay Meeting House should be on your list.
This place is a gem! I've been coming for six years, ever since I moved to Charleston. It's the only place I know of locally that serves GOOD coffee and alcohol (coffee and Baileys, anyone?). They serve fantastic, fresh sandwiches and salads for lunch, and the best, cheapest, fastest breakfast in town.
Their new location is a bit smaller and so has married the bar/coffee areas, but it's still intimate and welcoming without crowding, and quiet enough to read or study. Great lighting and music! You can join the bar crowd or pick a cozy table.
My husband and I visited this cute coffee shop before seeing a play at the Footlight Players Theatre in December. Neither of us actually likes coffee, so we came here seeking dessert...for some reason, I had been craving chocolate cake all day long. This place certainly did not disappoint!!! The slice we had was very moist, fresh, chocolatey, and delicious; we savored every bite!
The atmosphere was also really nice - cosy and elegant at the same time. Next time we visit Charleston we will definitely stop in here again!
What a delight.
After picking up our wedding license (yes!) we strolled over to East Bay to find some coffee and grub on the way back to our B&B. We stumbled upon the East Bay Meeting House, and what good fortune it was.
The staff was friendly and helpful, making us feel welcome.
The interior is warm and inviting, and I'll bet it's particularly so in January and February when cold winds come in from the rivers. A very pleasant environment all around, and comfortably casual. The music was a little loud, but the mixes done by the owner were so intriguing that I overlooked it. Lesser music, though, might have irritated rather than intrigued.
K had iced tea and I had the Vanilla Espresso Latte. The Latte was so, so good, its flavors rich with a long finish that made me carry the cup with when I left and drank it to its dregs.
We each ordered a sandwich; I had the turkey sandwich with brie and bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise. It sounds as if it could be heavy, but it was light and yet satisfying. I asked for brown mustard instead of mayo....which they forgot. They were quick to provide the fresh ground mustard on the side with a charming little spreader, so amends were quickly made. K had the turkey club and finished hers ahead of mine, an amazing feat given that I am a hearty trencherman!
K topped it off with their crumble coffee cake and pronounced it a success. I was tempted by the baclava fingers (they called them logs though they were the size of my thumb), but didn't want to spoil my dinner to come tonight, so I passed. Next time, I won't pass.
Let's pretend I don't have kids. Â I'd be calling my husband to meet me here after work. Â And we'd hang out, talking about how our day went and what we plan to do the next day. Â
Let's pretend I don't have a husband. Â I'd be meeting my friends for a cup of coffee (or a round of drinks) while checking out hotties that pass by. Â
Let's pretend I don't drink coffee (nor alcohol). Â I'd still hang out here, have a slice of pie and listen to live music on weekends. Â
All right, enough pretending. Â I don't even live in South Carolina!
Great dual-personality spot -- good for winding up, or winding down, whichever mood you are in. You feel like having a good coffee but your friend needs a stiff drink? No problem. Get coffee and desserts in the front, or full bar service at the rear.
Somehow the juxtaposition works really well. The ambiance and the furniture are very comfortable and low-key.
a cute little cafe at the front and a bar at the back with lots of coffee drink options as well as beers, wines, and mixed drinks. the first time we walked past, they were having poetry night but we were on the way to dinner so we passed. the next day, we hid out here on an especially hot day, and cooled down with some cold beers. seems like a fun place to hang out and/or study.
