I met some friends here for lunch during work one day at their suggestion. I got there first and was waiting by the menu checking it out. The owner (I am assuming) gave me the run down on how things worked (well, sorta, he left a few important things out). I thought he was really nice, not sure what people are talking about. I guess I caught him on a good day!

The soup thing is funny, the temp of the air is the price of soup with a sammy. The only thing is, the sammy also comes with 2 sides and that is a lot for this dame to eat for lunch! I made it through the gauntlet of ordering and sat down to get my sammich delivered. I didn't know you can just grab your own drink. It is a little confusing because you pay after. I always wonder how many people forget to pay. Anyway, the food was good! It is a quirky little place which kinda makes me like it more. I thought the book exchange was funny too, and it is all romance novels, haha.

I would definitely go back and this time I would be more of a pro! Plus they have free Dum Dums, like at the bank!

I can see a lot of people really not liking the guy who's running the joint. His personality is somewhat different. But I also think Chicagoans have grown to be a bit uppity and snot nosed about certain things.

This place in a sense is old school in the way things are done. Definitely different than what I've ever been to.

The old couple was friendly and even chatted it up afterwards about food joints to goto around town.

The food was good. Not exceptional by any means. But I think provides a better food experience than Pot Belly's down the street.

Based on the reviews, I'm gonna have to come here on lunch rush. I came around 5pm.

A complete disaster! We thought the temperature soup special sounded fun and interesting, so we decided to give this place a try.

I ordered a turkey sandwich and the chicken chili soup and the gf ordered a reuben and Matzo ball soup. First, the order-to-table system is very unorganized. You order your sandwich, they write it on a post-it note (seems inefficient), pick your sides and soup, take your sides and soup to a table, and your sandwich is brought to you by a loud (but friendly) gentleman, who yells out "TURKEY ON ONION ROLL" or whatever you ordered, and waits to see who puts their hand up. I respect the old school-ness here, but it's only one guy, closely packed tables, and a hella lota sandwiches that need to be delivered to the hungry Loop workforce.

SO, her sandwich didn't show up, they "accidentally gave it to someone else" (what?!), had to make another, and almost 20 minutes later, when I was done eating, she was served. They comped her sandwich but it was too late for those tricks. Disaster.

Second, most of the food was EH. My turkey sam was meaty but pretty standard, the chicken chili was bland and my side of mashed potatoes tasted like a sad scoop of 3- day-old mashers from a crappy diner.

I really wanted to like this place. The sandwich makers and staff were pleasant. I rarely give 1 star reviews but come on!

We came in here on a Sunday at 2:30 pm because there was nothing else around open at the time. My mom and grandmother seemed to love the food but I have to make a comment on the owner. As I sat down to eat my bagel from Dunkin donuts I witness the owner address his African American cleaner as "black man" and told him to clean the floor in a spot a little more. At first I thought maybe they were close enough to joke around like that but then the cleaner said he needed to get to his other job and the owner replied "You have another job? How did you get one? I didn't know you were literate." The man just looked down. I was shocked. I work in a restaurant and I've seen some pretty prejudiced things from customers but never from a manager or owner. I will not be coming here again I cannot tolerate prejudice. The man was not joking at all.

The sandwiches are big but the service is slow.  Get here early (preferably pre-11:30) so that you don't get stuck waiting in line for extended periods during the lunch hour.  I waited 25 minutes in a modestly long line of about 8 customers.

They have a temperature soup deal where you pay an amount equal to the day's temperature, and their soup selection included 5 options during my visit.  The Pastrami Reuben was stacked high and mighty, alongside some mash potatoes and gravy for about $10...lunch for two days.

Eppy's is a good spot when you want a large tasty sandwich and you're tired of the lines at Goodwin's.

Eppy, the owner, always seems to be on site--and if you ask me he does more harm than good.  He's got a fun personality and is an overall nice guy, but he insists on running the thing backwards and upside down.

You walk in and order your sandwich Subway style along the counter, ending up at the register.  However, they refuse to hand you your sandwich and let you pay at that point, so you have to sit down at a random table and wait for the chaos to begin.  In short order, some hapless server will walk around and hand you your sandwich--just hope it isn't similar to someone else's.  I've seen mix-ups multiple times, and most people are so nice that when they realize the mistake they just roll with it.

After your meal you have to go back and pay, jockeying in line with the people who are in the process of ordering, because, as mentioned, you end up at the register twice.

Amidst all this, Eppy is running around having the servers make minor adjustments to how they put the turkey on a piece of rye, while the servers start rolling their eyes and ignoring him as soon as he's turned his back.

If Eppy could just relax, let you pay the first time around, and focus on providing good customer service instead of micromanaging his staff, this place could earn another star or two.

This place is terrible. They have no ordering or assembling process, the staff is RUDE and the sandwich was bland and boring. Absolutely NOT worth the wait. Chicago needs a real deli. I could even put up with rude if the food was good.

Awful service! The owner? sandwich guy? avoided looking at us in favor of looking at the MEN behind us, then passed our sandwiches off to another women who was horribly rude. The only person there who seemed at all friendly is the girl doing the sides. She should probably look for a new job though bc I know I couldn't work around people who are so angry and rude all day.

The order line / check out for to-go was disorganized, no one seemed to know what they were doing. The line was out the door (probably bc it was going so slow at the front), and to top it off, the food is horribly bland. Total waste of time and money.

Good sandwiches. Just don't ever try to use the bathroom unless you are a customer. The owners go batsh*t on violaters.

I like this place cause there is usually never a line, while Goodwin's is out the door. I stick to a Pastrami/Corned Beef on rye with Mac n Cheese side.  It is excellent.

    Here is the deal though.

    1. Why is the owner such a dick?  Then tries to be nice to customers, but berates employees in front of people?  It isn't an act and if it is, he should quit it.

    2. Hand out number and put them on the tables.  You wouldn't need to yell at your employees if they didn't have to GUESS where the sandwich was going. This is downtown Chicago, not some corner sandwich shop in the countryside...

    3. Let me pay before I eat.  PERIOD.

That being said, it is a good sandwich, but if there was ever a line, I would probably walk out and either go to Perry's or wait in line at Goodwin's.

Grabbed lunch here late last week and was very, very underwhelmed.  I pass this place almost every day and have always been interested in their temperature soup deal (soup priced in cents based on the high temp of the day) - Friday it was 39 degrees, so 39 cent soup was in order.

Initial impression was pretty bad - the guys making the sandwiches behind the counter totally ignored me and were too busy talking about their (inappropriate and expletive-laden weekend plans with some girl) to even ask me for my order.  I got a grilled cheese with a cup of the tomato basil soup.  The awkward ordering experience continued when I was barked at by a girl behind the counter asking me what I was waiting for bc my sandwich would be brought to my table - how was I supposed to know that?  The soup had a really funky after taste and I didn't finish it.  The sandwich was mediocre at best - I could have made a much better grilled cheese at home.  Given the mom and pop feel, I wanted to like this place, but it just fell very short...

The only thing good about Eppy's Deli is the location. The food is not good at all, it all tastes like it's made with fat, more fat, and even more fat. Their sandwiches lack flavor and I just feel disgusting after eating here.

I ordered the Meat Loaf Sanwich and also tried some of my girlfriend's Reuben and didn't care for either one. The Mac N' Cheese is something I would tell everyone NOT to get. There's just too many other options in the Loop to even consider giving Eppy's Deli another shot.

More like 3 and a half stars honestly.  Their sandwiches are very good, but I don't care much for the mac'n cheese, chips, or really any of the sides that can come along with the sandwich.  I usually have a corned beef sandwich with russian dressing and coleslaw.  Even though it doesn't say on the menu that the coleslaw can be added as a topping, they are more then accomidating by opening some up and placing it on my sandwich.

I also think it's really cool how you can get soup that the temperature outside reflects the price.  I have never tried it, but still think its a nice touch.  I will definitely be back in the future, and look forward to eventually finding a good side to go along with my sandwich.

After ordering 15 (no joke) reubens here in 2011, I have discovered that to be the best sandwich. I wouldn't recommend it for those on a diet since it comes with a mound of meat and lots of sauce.

Matzo ball or corn chowder soup are my default selections.

As far as a Deli in Chicago, this place is top notch.  You get a nice healthy portion of meat, a side of mac n cheese, a soda drink (they have diet dr. pepper) and a cup of soup for well below $10.

I usually go turkey pastrami on marble rye with some spicy brown mustard and a dab of horseradish sauce.  My co-workers love the reuben and the roast beef.

The one thing that takes some getting used to is paying AFTER you eat.

First thing you need to know-Eppy's crazy. You never know what he's going to say because he has no filter. Things to know-You pay after you eat, if you're getting a warm sandwich sit down and they'll bring it to you, don't stand in the doorway while you're deciding what you want to eat because it will look busy and people won't come in, don't take a tray if you're getting it to go, don't sit at the big table unless you have a big group and you can wrap your leftover sandwich in foil because he doesn't make $300,000 a year which I guess is the magical point that will allow him to provide boxes for leftovers.  If you're sensitive, you'll probably want to go somewhere else because sooner or later he'll upset you.

Second thing you need to know is that you'll get a good sandwich at a good price that includes a drink plus 2 cold sides or 1 warm side. Cold sides include macaroni and potato salads, chips and my favorite the fresh fruit cup. Warm sides include mac & cheese and mashed potatoes and gravy. All of this comes for $6-$8. You may get a bigger sandwich at Perry's but it will cost you $8 or $9 and will only include your sandwich. They also have the temperature soup which is priced at that morning's temperature. Unlike the ripoff at RJ Grunts where the price can't go below zero, Eppy's will pay you to eat their soup if it's below zero. My Catholic southside friend had his first taste of matzo ball soup here and now gets that when he eats here. I usually get the corned beef sandwich but recently tried the meatloaf sandwich which was also tasty.

Eppy can be actually kinda pleasant (sometimes) if you get to know him. Stop in for the experience.

Let me tell you about my experience at Eppy's from the other day. I have been to this sandwich shop several times and it is hit or miss; typically miss. I tolerated the mediocre food and the overbearing owner who insists on asking, "Have you ever ordered from here?" to everyone who walks in, just in case they haven't been to a sandwich shop in the last 50 years.

Anyways, two of my co-workers and I go there and I am the first to order. I get a pastrami sandwich with cheese, lettuce, mayo and tomato, very standard, hard to mess up--or so I thought. We sit down and my two friends get their sandwiches after roughly 5 minutes. I sit and wait patiently and after they were each rounding third on their sandwiches I decided to get up and ask where my food is. One of the sandwich workers tells me it is coming- I don't really believe her but I sit down anyways. Another 5 minutes passes, still no sandwich. I get back up and ask if it is coming and the owner tells says "Its coming! What'd you order?" Another five minutes pass and finally I get my sandwich!

But wait, the order the owner throws down on my table is not even close to what I order. Roughly three slices of corned beef (I ordered pastrami) sat on what must have been a week old kaiser bun- no mayo, lettuce or tomato as I had asked. I am too hungry to say anything so I decided to eat it anyways, pay and get out. Upon taking my first bite I realize the only way that I would be able to eat this absurdly dry sandwich would be to Kobayashi it and dunk the sandwich in my drink. After one bite I get up, bring my food to the counter and I tell him that this isn't even close to what I ordered and I can't eat this. The owner looks and me, grabs my tray and says, "Fine, I wasn't going to ask you to pay anyways." Which was nice, so I was about to give them a pass, but as I turned my back, the troll who I presume is the owners wife, yelled, "Now get the F**K out!"

    Classy.

Decent sides and they will bring out the occasional decent sandwich but I strongly recommend laying down a few extra bucks and going next door to Perry's.

First Rule at Eppy's - you pay after you eat!
Second Rule at Eppy's - you pay after you eat!
Third Rule at Eppy's - you pay after you eat!

If you can follow the three rules above you will be safe from getting yelled at by Larry the Owner.

All the sandwiches are delicious; my personal favorite is the Ruben.

I was here with a co-worker and it was the first time for both of us.  The line moved at a pretty good pace and there were tons of people in there for the lunch rush.  They give you a ton of food for the price you pay- or at least I felt like they did because I probably would have just been fine with the sandwich and didn't need the sides...

Anyway, I guess it was pretty apparent that we were first-timers because the guy behind the counter making sandwiches totally knew and helped us through the process.  The owner dude was also helpful and ushered us into seats.  We were really weirded about about the whole pay after you eat thing, but it is kind of cool- I guess if you're not satisfied you just don't pay!? idk.  I'll be back to try more things, but I definitely will be taking it back to the office- way too crowded in there!

I've been to Eppy's at least a dozen times, as I worked practically across the street for 2 1/2 years. I snatched up their Groupon last summer, and went today to use it. It wasn't busy, but it was only about 11:30. My boyfriend and I split a sandwich, some temperature soup, mashed potatoes and a fruit cup. We ate, then hung out for about 4 minutes until the manager or owner, whomever he was, took our empty basket and tray, said he got that and that we needed to leave as he could use the table.

Now, I've never managed, owned or ran a restaurant, deli or anything of the sort. Still, I'm fairly convinced that it is RUDE to ask your customers to leave. There were at least 5 empty tables in the restaurant, and it was only 12. I am not the type of person to sit there for 10 minutes talking when a joint is jam packed and people would like to sit. I know my etiquette, and I expect the restaurateurs to know theirs as well.

So I'm waiting in line for like 10 minutes and decide to order the Portabella sandwich. When I get to the counter they tell me they are out of portabella sandwiches so I have to walk back to the menu because it's back where I was waiting in line to figure out what to order now. fine. I order a turkey sandwich (it was boring) then I order a side of tomato basil soup because they have that deal (price of soup is the temperature outside). Well, they are all out of the tomato soup too! fine, no soup.  As i'm walking out I totally see someone get the portabella sandwich OUTRAGEOUS!!! You pay after you eat which is kinda weird, and creates a lot of traffic to get out of the restaurant.

The only reason I'm giving this place 2 stars (and I feel I am being generous) is because you get a lot of food for the price.

Also they charge extra for cheese. meh.

So this place is slamming. I know that everyone wants to run next store to Perry's, but do not sleep on Eppy's Deli. I've had a couple of their sandwiches (obviously the corned beef) and have never left disappointed. All of their sides are good, but I would suggest getting the potato salad cause it's out of this world and even out of Mars as well.

The service is great and it's really cool that you pay for your food AFTER you eat. That's how confident Eppy's is with the goodness of their food. Definitely check out this place and enjoy the many dank sandwiches on the menu. Boom Boom Pow WoW!

HOOray. Sandwich happiness can happen for you too at Eppy's! I promise.

Hungry for some serious soup and a good sammie, my lunch crew and I hit up Eppy's last Friday. Love the temperature soup concept/ 19 degrees means my lentil goodness cost me, you guessed it, $0.19. And this was no wimpy cup of soup. LOTS O'LENTILS. Yup.

My choice for a sandwich was ham + cheddar + marble rye + toasting = happy sandwich for TWO DAYS. Seriously. The ham was piled very high and condiments a-plenty. My half of sandwich plus the aforementioned lentil deliciousness and two sides set me back $7.50 or so INCLUDING a Diet Doctor Pepper, which I argue is one of the BEST diet pops around. NOT BAD. Minor gripe? My cole slaw was like three tablespoons of mayo with a smidge of cabbage mixed in. Not my bag, baby, but hey. I was full and happy.

Definitely will hit Eppy's up again when I am having a serious soup and sandwich crave. Under $8 for lunch for two days? Sign this cheap chicky up.

    My tips?
--Pay after (as others have mentioned).
    --Soup is good. Get it.
--If you are with someone else, I recommend splitting and getting a soup. BARGAIN MEAL.
--Plan on going early (11:30 a.m.) or after 1:00 p.m. to ensure a seat unless you are taking your sandwich to go.

Two discerning loop-lunching thumbs up here!

    Yay! I am a fan.

Fun deli experience, love the temperature soup schick. I especially liked it when it was -2.

Having been here twice, here's what I know:
    -Matzo ball soup - yum
    -Tomato basil soup - yum
    -Chicken chilli - ok
-Fruit salad - yum, a nice alternative
-Turkey meatloaf on marble rye with swiss cheese - yum.
-Fountain Diet Dr Pepper - THANK YOU!!

Its overwhelming all of the choices you have to make here, What do you want on your sandwich? What kind of cheese? Mayo or mustard? Tomato, onion, lettuce? Do you want it toasted? What two cold sides or 1 warm side do you want? What kind of soup?  And then you have to remember to pay after lunch.

Coming here around 1PM guarantees a spot to sit down and enjoy. Highly recommend.

So the first time  went to Eppy's, I was intimidated. Yes, a sandwich shop intimidated me. Waiting for my turkey sandwich, I was certain I'd screw it up and face sandwich-wrath.

Kinda perverse isn't it? This is lunch, not boot camp.

But once I became familiar with the Eppy way of doing things, I've grown to love the rather gruff exterior of the workers and whole oddness of the place. Eppy's is all about good food and nothing else. The sandwiches aren't going to blow you away in terms of culinary prowess and creativity, but I've been happy with all different varieties--turkey, ham, pastrami, etc. Of note, the preparers do have a bit of a heavy hand with the condiments--if you are one of those people who only wants a "little" mayo, it's best probably not to ask for it at all. And don't try to see if you can get two of the same sides--they have to be different (though one day all I wanted was double fruit...sigh...)

Oddly enough, my favorite part of the whole experience has to be the yellow/brown colored plastic soda cups (I know they have a real name besides that). They scream '60s/'70s and make me feel like I'm sitting in my grandmother's kitchen. Sans funky grandmother smell.

I have been to this place four times now since my company moved right around the corner.  What a disorganized mess with cranky employees (for the most part).  Their saving grace?  The food!  When your order is right, that is.

BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR ORDER.  Every single time I have been in there, I grab my stuff to go and upon getting back to my desk, something is wrong.  I am ether missing a side, missing a soup, have the wrong sandwich, etc.  You would think after the second time, I would have been checking... so that's my fault.

Do not ever place a phone order either - unless you enjoy profanity and want to order EXTREMELY SLOW since the man taking the orders will stop you, "shit, I'm old!  slow down."  When you do arrive to pick it up, it won't be ready, it doesn't seem to be written down anywhere and they have to scramble to put the order together - only to probably still get it wrong.

That all being said, their food is to die for - and very, very reasonable in price!

The cranky old man, while profane and unorganized, will still throw a smile on his face afterwards and thank you for coming in.  It's clear he has a passion for the place and the food.  Locally-owned businesses FTW!

Highly recommended... just be sure to get there around 11:30 or after 1:00 for the least disorganized time.

    mmmm lox bagel!

Bought a few groupons for this place so I finally decided to try it out. They have great options, with of course (if you look at the menu) 2 cold side options or 1 hot side option, 16 oz soda.

You can get your lox on any type of bagel with regular or chive cream cheese, alright, nice!! There was a tomato on there too, but no capers? :( saddd.

I got mac n cheese as my side. It was pretty good, but nothing to write home about (but I guess Yelp about?). The serving size was plenty, I didn't need more than that. Free soda too, with Diet Dr. Pepper! I never drink soda so I only got half a glass to make me feel like I was getting all I could out of the groupon.

Service was good, we even snagged a table in the crowded restaurant. The other sandwiches looked great, and the soup today was 37 cents, which is great and terrible at the same time... 37 in November, not coo!

The owner even came over to us and was quite charming with his explanation of how everything worked.

I will come back here again for sure.

I've been here twice for lunch and am not sure if I will be back.

The old man - owner? manager? - kept interfering with the order line.  First he encouraged a group to cut in front of us because some of my party were still looking at the menu. Wrong.  The group went ahead of us and proceeded to...look at the menu.  Then he is shouting about having four people at the counter at a time - but his line staff (who actually are very nice and know what they are doing) are not always ready.

Then I got my sides from another friendly server and wanted to wait for my sandwich, but the same guy told me to go sit down.  Of course no one remembers who ordered what (they don't have a system like noodles company etc) so they go around shouting and putting the wrong sandwiches in front of the wrong customers (happened several times while I was there).  Not only would that be annoying if it was my sandwich, but it creates this constant cacophony in the dining room.

Also - note to the owner/manager.  Ordering here isn't rocket science.  We have all been to sandwich shops before and most of us in the loop can read.

The good?  It is cheap for what you get, mostly.  I discovered my plastic cup to be dirty with some sort of buildup in the bottom as I finished my tea.  Yuck.

The tomato basil soup... something is wrong about this.  Very wrong.

Go for a sandwich, grab it and run back to your office.

I think Eppy's faces a lot of competition given its location -- it's in a 1 block radius or so from Goodwin's, Specialty's, Pot Belly('s), Perry's, Pocket(')s, etc., most of which are pretty ok or great depending on their sandwich-specific genre.  While this is admittedly my first time here, my review is based largely on the service, more than the breadth of their food items.

I asked for the Turkey Pastrami sandwich, but received plain turkey--hmph.  Apparently cheese is extra, which is actually a-o.k. for me, as I usually find it adds a lot of extra fat without a lot of accompanying flavor or texture given our love for the pasteurized and processed cheese products in this country.  But I wasn't asked if I wanted cheese, nor the apparently complimentary pickle.

The bread choice confused me -- they have both regular rye and marbled rye.  I'm not a fan of the latter, given that it usually has caraway seeds--blech. You're often safe on the caraway side if you go with dark-only rye bread, which is essentially pumpernickel.  Keep that in mind, b/c their rye bread is really their plain white sandwich bread, which while it does not contain caraway, isn't really that much more interesting than the standard stick-to-the-roof-of-your-mouth fare.

When asked what I wanted on my sandwich, I said everything, thinking that he was going to toast it like those sandwiches I saw going into the conveyor oven ahead of me.  Then, when I realized he was going to start loading it up I specified no mayo.  He showed the slice of bread to me, covered with mayo, and goes "you asked for everything."  BFD -- it's one measly slice of white bread, and at 1pm, while the dining room was much fuller than expected, there wasn't a line to speak of.  If I go back, I will figure out how the hot vs. cold sandwich thing works -- but I suspect it's kind of like Subway these days -- if you ask for it, they'll do it for you.

Basically every sandwich is a meal deal, including 2 sides and a fountain drink.  Makes it easy.  Included sides are basically mayo-oriented things: macaroni salad, potato salad and coleslaw + chips.  I actually like coleslaw quite a bit, but this one was relatively characterless... better slopped onto the sandwich than on its own.

Temperature soup (you pay 75 cents when it's 75 deg F out) is cool -- not the only place in Chicago that works it, but I'm not aware of another in the immediate vicinity, and it's a nice plus.  I'm tempted to try the lox sandwich since you can't find that everywhere, but I am not so sure they have the traditional accompaniments of thinly sliced red onion and capers, of which I love both.

I think they could earn more repeat customers if they were a little better at guiding first-timers through the process.

One good thing about Eppy's deli is: they pile the meat!!  My fave here is probably the meatlof sandwich.  I've tried the turkey, but it was just OK.

Agree with most reviewers, I think the whole system of eat first, pay later is great - but not quite work that well for delis, unfortunately.  I wonder how many peeps actually walked out (either accidentally -or in purpose?) without paying?  Definitely plausible.

I've ordered catering from them a couple of times before - since I work in the Loop area.  While their food always good (and they give you plenty of it plus new full-size bottles of mustards and all ... - I found ordering is kind of a challenge.  :(  I haven't tried to order from them in a few months - maybe I should try again just in case they have improved their ordering system?  I'll keep you posted .....

Not a bad place, but nothing to Yelp about. Wow, I feel horrible for saying that.

Anyways, it's a decent sandwich place, good variety of sandwiches and they're made fresh with good ingredients. Decent size, not huge. Decent sides, although they appear to usually be out of some or most of them. Decent prices.

Two cool things about Eppys: They let you pay after you eat, relying on the trust system which somehow must be working in the Loop nowadays. And they have five or six kinds of mustard on every table.

Mostly, just a decent place. If you want a wow factor, go a few doors north to Perry's and be prepared to poop yourself.

Eppy's has some of the best sandwiches in Chicago! Their menu is extensive. Corned beef is a nice option for a sandwich.

Their side options for each sandwich - 2 cold or 1 hot side - are innovative as well. I'm sick of getting a side of potato chips at most sandwich places. At Eppy's you can get AWESOME A++++ SUPER GREAT spicy mac n cheese as a side. What could be better?

Each sandwich includes a fountain drink and your 2 cold/1 hot sides!

Also, Eppy's carries Green River (aka the best soda EVER).

Where Eppy's might not be your thing:
    1) The cranky old guy who runs it is nuts and sometimes fake rude. I find it charming. YMMV

    2) If you don't want the fountain drink and are hoping to pay a small extra for a bottled beverage (say, Green River) there's no small fee. You essentially pay for a fountain drink AND your bottled beverage. This is just stupid. So far, I've successfully argued with the old guy several times to get a discount on my bottled beverage.

    3) They claim a huge variety of gourmet mustards, but then you can see the bottles sitting out and it's all from Safeway. Sure, they have a huge variety of Safeway mustards...but they're Safeway mustards...hardly unique.

    4) Why the hell do they have you pay after you eat? It's just confusing and wastes time. The crazy owner won't even LET you pay first. I've actually forgotten to pay for a meal once because I finished and walked out. Silly. I love your place I want to give you my money!

I may have just had the best Rueben of my life today and its all because of Eppy's Deli.

As I walked inside for lunch today, I was greeted by the guy that runs the place and he let me know all sandwiches come with two cold sides or one hot side and a soda. I chose the mac & cheese for my side and it was great!!! The Rueben was really juicy and onions falling all over the place, Yummmmm!

They have all sorts of different sandwiches to choose from, which can cause you to hold up the line. Prices are pretty decent as it won't tackle your wallet too bad. Eppy's will probably see a bit more of me in the near future.

So, I decided when I write reviews, I need to have been to the place at least twice before truly forming a decision on it. So, I'm glad I wasn't introduced to Yelp until trying Eppy's for the second time.

So, the first time, I got a Hot Corned Beef Sandwich, it was pretty yummy and filling and I was like, great place. However, I just went today with some coworkers of mine and thought, OMG, what happened. Mind you, I went to this place only a month or two ago. So, there was no change in management or chefs or anything of the sort to have such a drastic change. So, my Ruben today, was cold, and the cheese not melted, and bland and just not good. Furthermore, the cost was a hefty $8.75. Dude, that's too much for a mediocre, cold Reuben.

So, as soon as I took a bite of the sandwich, I said, "Oh, I'm yelpping this place". I have an issue with places that are "Hit or Miss". This is definitely one of those places. As a matter of fact, I've decided, I won't be spending $10 for this food ever again.

I'd much rather hit up Morrie's in Hyde Park, just as much, but 20 times better! Thank you, but noooooo stank you!

I'm not a big fan of Eppy's for TWO reasons.
    1.  Eat now...Pay Later.  I guess in theory this is a good thing.  But it is really just confusing and kind of a pain in the ass.  I would rather just pay for the food, sit down and eat and then leave when I'm ready.  I finished my lunch before the rest of my group.  I felt like Mr. Epstein was staring at me giving me the "You finished eating...why aren't you paying" eyes.  I didn't like it.

    2.  The food is just okay.  I have had the rueben, the pastrami and a turkey sandwich along with the matzo ball soup and chicken chili.  All of them were decent but none were stellar by any means.

We need more deli's/sandwich joints in the loop.  I wish I loved this place.  But its just not that great.

Now this is what I'm talking about!  A damn good reuben.  This sandwich seduces me with it's firm but soft swirl rye bread, the tangiest of sauerkraut, perfectly melted swiss cheese, and succulent corned beef blushing at me.  I've already reviewed the original location on St. Clair, but this one raises the bar when it comes to sammich shops.  The added bonus of this location is that they now have hot sides available as well as their soup costs the same as the temperature deal.  I was also greeted at the end of my meal by owner, "Larry the Jew" who is wonderfully, sardonically personable.  We had a short conversation about where we've been, and where we're from and it's nice to affirm that there are people in this area that won't cut your head off if you look at them wrong.

While I'm about ready to crown Eppy's the best reuben in the loop, all I have to do is try more delis around here so there's some meaning to it.  I Highly reccomend this location over it's neighbor Perry's.

Eat first...pay later.  Interesting.  The sandwiches here are HUGE!  You get a sandwich, two sides and a soda all included in the price.  This is probably way more food than a person needs for lunch, but you only live once right?
I always go for the egg salad and I am never disappointed.  There are, what seems like, a ton of decisions to make after that though.  what type of bread, what condiments, cheese or no cheese.  Yikes.  All of my meat eating pals lean towards the turkey pastrami, which they swear is delish.  I will take their word on it though, and stick with my egg salad sammie.
I have seen a line out the door and down the block, but luckily my lunch hour just narrowly beats the rush.  When I am hungry and looking for a big ole egg sammie, I know that Eppy's won't let me down.

I stopped by here for lunch yesterday and it was a little chaotic.  The line at chipotle was  too long, so we stopped by here because it was new and the line was shorter. The line may have been shorter but it seemed to take forever. The staff is definitely a little wierd. The sandwich guy made my sanwich, then moved me to the "side item" station. the lady at that station seemed super flustered and yelled "what do you want" . After I got my sides I moved to my to the cashier to pay, and the man at the register yelled "you pay after you eat". I was so confused. I sat down to eat and thought to myself- i can just walk out of here when I'm done and you wouldn't know that I didn't pay! My sandwich was really good, and so was the potato salad and fruit cup.  And yes I did pay for my meal.. and I was a little annoyed because there was a huge line to pay by the time I was ready to leave.

Bottom line.. the food is good. .but the logistics suck!

My co-worker and I were on our way to Potbelly's for lunch and decided to take a detour and test out Eppy's Deli. To our delight, the line was not very long. Unfortunately this didn't translate into getting our food quickly! I think Eppy's recently opened and it's clearly evident as they only had a total of three workers (the owner, who's a bit weird, and two staff). For a downtown lunch spot, we all know this is not enough staff! So from ordering to leaving, it took much longer than expected.

HOWEVER, the food was excellent. I ordered the turkey meatloaf (since I can't get that at Specialty's anymore). All sandwiches come with two cold sides and a fountain drink. The two cold sides can be substituted for one hot side. I opted for the trade and got some mac'n'cheese. The mac'n'cheese had a spicy kick, but was tasty. The turkey meatloaf sandwich was real, real good. My total came to about $7. Not a bad deal with all the goodies the sandwich came with. You bet I'll be back and hopefully by then the loopy owner will have worked out the service issues and I'll move this up to 4 stars ;-)

This location just opened a few weeks ago where Dagwood's used to be.  Same soup deal as the other location (which I have not been to).  I have no idea if the reportedly nutty owner is at this location or if he's got someone else running this one -- there is a guy who explains the menu and everything when you're looking at it on the wall, but he doesn't seem overly crazy, and the employees aren't all ripping on each other like they apparently do at the other location.  Same "pay after you eat" system as the other place also.  So far the only inkling of the anger at a nearby business apparently exhibited at the other location has been a mention that you can use your cell phone (a dig at Perry's, though I think the anti-cell alarm at Perry's is pretty damn funny).

First time I went was better than the second.  Second time the guy making the sandwich didn't ask me if I wanted it toasted or if I wanted anything else besides meat and cheese.  Soups are good, mac and cheese is good too.

If you liked the other one you'll probably like this one as well.  If the crazy makes an appearance at this one I'll make sure to edit with a report.
