My "Foodie Buddy" R. asked if I wanted to try this new Pizza he read about "Clam Pizza" I asked "Is the Karaoke?" he replied "No" I said "I'm in, but I have no desire to try Clam Pizza"

When we got there, the place looked pretty cool from the outside, then we went in, what a beautiful restaurant, I really liked the place. So I had the "Fat's Salad" Completely Awesome !!!

I really enjoyed the place !!!

Tell 'em The ZERo sent ya.

This restaurant is a must!  It's a great neighborhood place right by the 508.  Our party of 5 ordered pizzas, hot hoagies, pasta and pizza by the slice.  Everyone enjoyed their meals.  The prices are reasonable and the service was great.  They have an impressive craft beer list which really surprised all of us.  The wine list is a little limited but some nice choices.  Great Italian joint!

25 years of practice has solidified Fat Lorenzo's as one of the best in the Minneapolis pizza scene. Is there a Minneapolis pizza scene? After stuffing my stomach with all kinds of Italian goodness I thought to myself - why do I ever order Domino's when this is available?

And it's pretty reasonably priced too. We spent about $50 (without drinks) between eight people and even had a couple of pieces of pizza to take home for lunch the next day. Not only a great neighborhood restaurant, but also a great deal. Just what the Hicks' were looking for.

...And save room for the gelato!

    Atmosphere
Welcoming, family-friendly environment. Almost felt like we were sitting around our own kitchen table.

    Service
The service was great. Very accommodating to our group of 8.

    Presentation
Classic pizzeria. No frills, just flavor.

    Taste
Fantastic. The pizza crust was crisp without being too crunchy, the sauce was well proportioned, and the fresh toppings were enhanced by a great italian season. Definitely worth the hype.

    Value for Dollars
Affordably priced. We got out of there at about $6 a person!

Let's be clear, it you are all about the ambiance, skip this place.  If you like great Pizza and a unique environment, visit this place now.

I've had some great pizza's here.  Only thing that keeps it from 5 stars if the differing levels over service.  But the pizza is great and the restaurant is unique.

Fun place to visit and recommended.  Cheese bread is also very good, excellent flavors and sauce.

Much better than I expected.  Being from NYC I am very picky with my pizza, and Italian food for that matter.  So when I order pizza to a hotel, regardless of what locals say.....I do not expect much.

This was not close to NYC....but tasty!  Pizza was good, artichoke dip was awesome, and meatballs were different...in a good way.

    Overall a nice experience!

I always want to say something nice, so I will say that this place has very cool murals on the walls. Everything else about our experience here was pretty much awful.

Our waiter was incredibly rude. I was raised by a waitress and waited tables myself. I am very willing to overlook a busy server. He was not busy. I am very conscientious about being a good customer. He was just a complete and utter ass.

I ordered a glass of wine, after which he fled from the table before my husband was able to order his drink. That's weird, right? Taking our drink orders one at a time? He soldiered on at hyper speed, stopping by twice more to take our order (my husband's drink, our dinner) and each time trying to run away before giving us a chance to answer his questions. We weren't hesitating - he just kept walking away.

I made the mistake of trying to order Alfredo with a side of sausage - two items which are on the menu but not together. Our waiter pretended to not know what I was asking for long enough for me to give up and just order it with chicken (a menu item). When I finally did that, made a rude remark about how I had changed my mind. I didn't change my mind. I gave up.

The only thing he didn't rush us through was bringing our check. That part took forever, and when he did finally come back to the table he refused to even acknowledge that I had asked for the check (politely) before I told him whether or not he could take my plate. The whole thing was baffling.

As for the food? Well, it's grotesque. I had the Chicken Alfredo and my husband had the Linguini with Clams. The Alfredo was thick and glue-y with no discernible flavor of it's own. I managed to eat enough of it to sate my hunger by covering it in pepper flakes and Parmesan cheese. My husbands meal was equally unimpressive. Also, my wine was rancid and there were fruit flies everywhere.

I am to understand this is a neighborhood institution, but for the life of me I don't get it.

Would probably go back if we were in the area, but not sure the pizza alone is worth the jaunt and they don't deliver to our area.

Ordered the medium "Fat's" which had pretty good toppings: Italian Sausage, pepperoni, green and black olives, green peppers and onion.  They are quite liberal with the toppings which was a plus. The cheese seemed kind of under abundant.

The crust was ok, but pretty bland. Not a lot of flavor and it seemed a tad dry. I've actually had better tasting crust at the "Hut". I'll be honest, the pictures made it look better than it was.

The pizza was good, but nothing out of the ordinary.

My bro took me here after picking me up from the airport. Neither of us was super hungry so we each just ordered a slice. Me the Alfrenzo and he the Slim's. Mine had alfredo sauce, chicken, artichokes, roasted red peppers, spinach, ricotta, mozzarella and provolone and it was incredible. I sampled his Slim which had mushrooms, onions, green peppers and black olives. Both were really tasty and came to the table tout de suite ( I hope I used that phrase correctly!).  It should also be noted that they had a great craft beer selection. I had a Fatty Boombalatty--a Belgian Pale Ale from Wisconsin's Furthermore Brewing.

If you are staying near the Airport in MSP and don't want to eat at Mall Of America...

This is a great choice for pizza! Indoor and Outdoor seating and very good service. The pizzas are generously topped and there is a great selection of toppings. Crust was very good. If the 5-8 is full you have a great option with Fat Lorenzo's!

Fat Lorenzo's has good pizza, but falls short of being great NYC style pizza.  Their cheese pie is good, but was a bit doughy.  I also had their veggie pizza, but it tasted as if they used a different cheese and was not as crispy.  Overall it's a decent pizza place with adequate service.

I recently ate at Fat Lorenzo's and was very happy with the Pizza.  I am something of a pizza snob and I hit every pizza joint with almost impossible to attain expectations.

That being said, I dined in at Fat Lorenzos.  We were a total party of 2 and even though it was a busy Friday night, we were seated almost immediately.  The decor of the place is an over-the top fresco - stop in and you will see exactly what I am talking about.

We ordered the artichoke dip as an appetizer and an XL special pizza.  The artichoke dip came out first (as it should have) and was full of big artichoke hearts, cheesy goodness and it was bubbling hot - again as it should be.  It was served with mini - toasts.  The proportions were perfect and the portion itself was large enough for the 2 of us to bring some home as leftovers.  It was a VERY good dip!

The pizza came out in a rather timely fashion and was hot, bubbly and HUGE!  I intended for there to be leftovers for the next day and was not disappointed.  The toppings were plentiful and fresh and appeared to be carefully hand layered so that you had all of the toppings in each bite.  This is a true New York style pizza with just the right combo of crisp and chewy to the crust, a good spicy red sauce and slices so big you need to fold them in half to eat them.

The bill came in a timely fashion.  We tipped well because we had both excellent service and excellent food.

On the way out, we stopped at the front counter and had some of their from scratch gelato - I had the green tea gelato and my partner had the cookies and cream gelato.  Both were excellent!

All in all, Fat Lorenzo's lived up to my expectations of what a good pie should be.  I reccommend you stop by for their pizza.

We were so excited to order NY-style pizza for an easy Friday night dinner, but we were thoroughly disappointed.  NY-style pizza should have a floppy, chewy crust with a thin layer of very tomato-y sauce.  Not so much at Fat Lorezo's  The crust was especially bad - crackery, flavorless - and we couldn't even fold our slices in half to eat them!  The sauce was spicy and actually pretty tasty, but it didn't belong on NY-style pizza.  Really, though, the crust was what ruined it for us.  Delivery took about an hour, but the pizza did arrive piping hot.

Just reviewing the pizza, not the other food.  I've heard that the gelato is worth eating!

Superb pizza. It has a delicious seasoned sauce with just the right amount of cheese! It is by far one of the best pizzas I have ever had. Its a ultra neat place to dine in.  You get to draw on the table while you have that short wait for your food. The employees are super friendly and fast. They also have a delicious large bread stick that is pretty inexpensive. I have been here several times and have yet to  have a bad experience.

Fat Lorenzo's, located near Lake Nokomis in Minneapolis, is another nice Italian dining option for those who want a more casual ambience. They are also known for their gelato, so it's makes for a great snack while walking around the lake or as a dessert after a juicy Lucy from the 5-8.

Most of the menu items are typical of Italian fare, but I will say they have some unique sandwiches. I had the chicken cacciatore sandwich last time and I wasnt disappointed. Ive never seen that in sandwich form but it really was tasty.

The service was also good. When I ordered, the server offered to give me a sample so I would known what it tasted like before spending my money. I thought that was a nice gesture. The space is somewhat small, but the outdoor seating makes up for it, especially on a nice day.

Pros: Location near the lake, good food, gelato

Cons: Not top of the line food, if it's a busy day you may have to walk a bit as it's mostly street parking

    I love fat lorenzo's!!
    There I said it.
    Felt good.

My fave is the garlic chicken hot hoagie - it's HUGE and super delicious.  And cheap.
My boy got the O Mio Dio sandwich and that almost replaced the garlic chicken in my heart - but not quite.

Their 'za is pretty dang good too.

And did i mention they have house made gelato?

Their beer selection is stupendous as is their wine - it's super cheap too!
I got a glass of house wine for $4 - and it was really decent wine!  I wasn't sure at first, but for $4 why not give it a shot!

Go there - if you can get a table!  Or just get takeout and sit in the grass by the lake!

Wow what a great find.  I've always seen this place when driving to the 5 8 but never stopped in .  The other night a friend and I were not up for waiting 35 mins for a jucy lucey so we went to Lorenzo's

Im SOOOOO happy I did. up unil now the only place I thought that had great Italian food in the twin cities was Cossetta's in St. Paul

Fat Lorenzo's food is just as good and much cheaper.  2 pieces of pizza and an order of garlic cheese bread and it's under $13.00? amazing.  The pizza is thin crust and heaped with toppings.  You can actually taste the fresh garlic in the cheesebread .  I'm headed back there tonight to try something different.  5 stars all the wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Ate here on a Thursday evening after a bike ride and arrive at 8pm.  We were seated right away and it was about 2/3 full.  It was warm enough to sit outside as some were.  We chose to sit inside with its mismatched colored chairs and cherub and Italian scenes painted on the walls, nothing classy for sure.

Service was prompt from a very curious server.  I was on the fence with what to get....either the lasagna or the manicotti Lorenzo, and without hesitation the server recommended the lasagna.

Not your (or my)mamas lasagna.  Peppers, onions, pepperoni, mushrooms, sausage all layered perfectly between pasta and a wonderful red sauce.  This was served with two generous slices of garlic bread and the dish was big enough to share.

We rounded off the meal with some take out gelato.  I chose the Chai tea latte and it was a wonderful selection.

I'll be back Fat Lorenzo but for pizza next time.

We stopped here after eating at the 5-8 Club because we had heard so much about the gelato.

They let you try different flavors before deciding but I finally settled on the french toast flavor.  The others had lime, lemon, and chocolate caramel.  I tasted them all and they were all great!

I really want to come back and eat something other than gelato so I will reserve the last star after we do that. A friendly good-night and thank you on our way out awards the nice staff with five stars.  I hope their other food tastes as good as the gelato!

How have I not eaten here before?

Yesterday we had dinner at Fat Lorenzo's for the first time. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming--a classic neighborhood Italian restaurant. The murals on the walls and the ceiling are fantastic, and our wooden booth was roomy and comfortable. I had a glass of the house red, which hit the spot for only $4, and we started with the garlic cheese bread, which was by far the best we'd had anywhere in a very long time.

The pizza was large and satisfying. We chose the Fat's: pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, onions, green peppers, black and green olives. The pepperoni was crispy, and the crust was thick and chewy. It was exactly what I wanted; I know where to go now for my pizza fix. No more national chains for me!

PS: I am determined to try the gelato next time.

I've been coming to Fat Lorenzo's for years now and am happy to say it's my favorite neighborhood pizzeria.  They have great sandwiches and pasta but what my wife and I usually order is their pizza (specifically fats or slims combo).  Not everyone is a fan of big, thick, doughy pizza crust but THIS guy isn't one of them.  This crust is so thick and doughy/Bready I'm pretty sure you could cut the crust off and make a phenomenal sub sandwich.  The cheese is great too, very good quality mozzarella and fresh veggies.  Only draw back would be the size of the dining area but it's very much worth the wait (try some gelato and a beer while waiting)!

I've tried Fat Lorenzo's pizza, pasta, and gelato a few times.

The price is very decent for the quantity, and the place is cosy and slightly kitschy.

Nothing bad, but nothing great or memorable.   A bit too bland or plain for my tastes, but I've been told kids love it.

I hate to give 3 stars for this restaurant because I really like their food. My favorite one is a calcinato. An Italian quesadilla, it suppose an appetizer but for me 3 pieces are very fullfiling, total per order was 6 pieces for $9.99.

But today when my coworker did a take out around 11ish. The place was so pack, and not only that they also forgot to make my calcinato so he had to wait another 20 minutes for it. We ordered 5 personal pizzas and 1 calcinatos. Total to wait there almost an hour although he did phone ordering. Crazy. He said the place was so small with so many people there and apparently they were not really ready to get many customers at the same time?

Great if you like thin crust pizza. They seriously have the perfect crust that almost tastes like it's baked in a little bit of butter. We had onion, bacon, and pepperoni and it was so good!

We also had gelato for dessert which was very refreshing.

    Highly recommended.

As my friend Charell so eloquently remarked, "This pizza gets better with every bite. It's like I realize something new that I like about it each time I bite into it." I agree: Fat Lorenzo's pizza did not blow me away on the first bite, but it had definite staying power. It just sat very well with me; tasted fresh and wholesome.

I tried the gelatto, too. Good, but nothing to write home about (though I am not a gelatto-lover). They have outdoor seating, which is nice, so long as you don't mind the noise from Cedar Ave.

It makes for a great treat after a day in the sun at Lake Nikomis.

Beard and I were wandering in this area one night and felt a bit hangry, so we ended up just delving into Fat Lorenzo's without really knowing what we were getting into.

Kitschy, Little Italy style interior. Big booths. Lots of families. And good eats. We ended up sharing a small pizza and a piece of lasagna. I wasn't totally sold on the lasagna, as it was stuffed to the gills with various meats and I am not a multiple-meat lady. Beard thought it was satisfyingly chubful, though, which I suppose is why they call it "Fat" Lorenzo's and not "Plump" or "Zaftig".The pizza was actually really good, and I loved that they put on tons of banana peppers and the sauce was savory instead of sweet-ish.

The waitress we had was also very nice and kept us well watered and attended to even though she was wo-manning about 10 tables of screaming children and exasperated middle American parents. Yeesh. This also led to the extreme loudness in the restaurant, which I realize is no one's fault, but it can be grating if you're in the mood for a more quiet place.

The parking situation is also a plus here, as you are really close to Lake Nokomis, and I could see myself coming here more for a late lunch after hanging out at the lake than dinner again (screaming children=blind rage).

I've been coming here since I was a little kid with my family, such amazing pizza and great atmosphere. The location on the southern side of Lake Nokomis makes it a destination spot after a long stroll or a sun filled afternoon at the beach.

The cozy space and murals on the wall give it a family owned restaurant feel. The pizza is delicious though the clam topped Pizza New Haven did make me a little nauseous after smelling it in leftover form. I truly appreciate how much cheese comes on their pizza cause I love it! So when I order extra cheese it is bordering on obscene. If you prefer Punch Pizza (the Neapolitan style) this may not be your cup of tea.

I would recommend the Linguine with Clam Sauce, the red sauce had a little spicy kick to it, or build your own pizza. Also, remember to save yourself some room for Gelato for dessert, it's a must have- or at least try some flavors on your way out.

I first had Fat Lorenzo's at an event they catered. I was blown away by their chicken alfredo and sausage rigatoni. Alfredo may not seem like something that would blow you away, but I do not like restaurant alfredo because no one seems to know how to make it. However, Fat Lorenzo's was amazing and flavorful.

After the event, I actually went to the restaurant for lunch. I ordered the Garlic Chicken hoagie. It was delicious...absolutely delicious. I highly recommend this place for the alfredo, sausage rigatoni, and the hoagie (since that is all that I had). My friends all ordered seperate dishes and vowed to return.

I will return for their pizza and other menu items.

    Really-----
Ok what would Gordon Ramsey say about this place?
I had higher expectations.  People said it was really good.  First of all, tables kinda dirty, ok it's the paper on the tables thing..but clean under it, wipe off the chairs...

Second, the bread sticks--tired, old crusts--not buttery ( like the menu says) no trace of nice olio or anything, tasteless marinara sauce.
Not great selection of beers...come on you guys.
Pizza---eh...ok I give them credit for they use good, high quality cheese, but it was a wet pizza ( yeah yeah NY style) but I have been to NY and it's still got a crisper crust.  Service was mediocre...Pizza sauce a little heavy on the Oregano..Meat on Pizza was sparce.
And The gelato I had read raves on---ehhhh nothing, really.  Sort of tasted a little old to me.  The Stromboli was wet---like what happened to it?  Come on you guys---- they could do a ton better.  We should of gone to Pizza Luce instead.

A few days ago my girlfriend and I met up with some of our family at Fat Lorenzo's to celebrate one of our family members birthday, and they couldn't have picked a better place!!!

I want to start out by saying, I don't think love can describe how I really feel about the awesomeness of Pizza Luce and Physco Suzie's pizza, their pizza is AWESOME, but Fat Lorenzo's ...WAY BETTER...

There were nine people in our group so we had quite the smorgasbord.  I had the meatball hoagie which like other people have said in their reviews, the meatballs are about the size of baseballs, they're 1/4 pound each and you get three of these bad boys!  Alongside the 3/4 pounds worth of freshly ground balled up beef comes some banana peppers which you have to mix in with the melted mozzarella cheese on top!

We also ordered two pizzas and their new item on their menu called a Calcinato.
One pizza we ordered was also a new item on their menu called the "Alfrenzo" this is the pizza that made me fall out of love with Luce and into love with Lorenzo's!  The "Alfrenzo" consists of alfredo sauce instead of the classic read sauce, chicken, feta cheese, and artichoke hearts (I feel like I'm forgetting something) the crust was perfect, not to crunchy yet not to soft.  I highly HIGHLY recommend this pizza!  We had a vegetarian guest along with us so we also ordered their vegetarian pizza called the "Slim's Combo" consisting of mushrooms, onions, green peppers and black olives, which was also very good!

The Calcinato (Italian Quesadilla) consists of Garlic Chicken, Portobello mushrooms, roasted red peppers, arugula, and is top with a light glazing of balsamic vinegar.  I'm usually not a big fan of crispy flat bread things, but this is a big exception!  It just melts in your mouth!!!  You gotta try it!!!

After we were all stuffed full of what I would say some of the best food in the twin cities we topped it off with the best gelato in town!  We all ordered our own then passed them around trying each one.  We had the mint chocolate chip, raspberry, passion fruit, pistachio, and chocolate coffee... not one of them was bad.  I think the big problem with this place is knowing what to go, each dish/item is different from the next yet you can't go wrong.  I have nothing bad to say about this place, the service was great, they promptly accommodated to nine of us, and they're service was fast and friendly.

I guess if I had to say one bad thing about this place, they only off soda in a can rather then bottomless fountain drinks like we're all use to.

I deem Fat Lorenzo's the BEST restaurant in the twin cities!

I like them better now after my visit tonight.  We met the guy who makes the gelato (I think Mike's his name) and we sorta harassed him about how he didn't have Mango gelato available :) Oh well, he had WATERMELON gelato. AMAZING!

Everyone there is super nice there tonight.  I got a good vibe from everyone there. That makes a huge difference at any place.  I'm excited to go back to try more of the food.  We had a cold sandwich today and the lasagna -- I'm not a fan of cheesy stuff, but the lasagna was super good!

    A little update here. . .

My mom took me here for my special birthday girl lunch.
I ordered the garlic chicken hoagie,
my mom ordered the italian chicken hoagie.
We split them in half and then traded so we could
each sample the wonderfulness of each others sammiches.
I ended up liking mine a lot more.
    So cheesy and yummy!!
There were a ton of banana peppers on the sammich,
    which I love love loved.
Our waiter was kind of ditsy,
    but I forgive him.

My 5 stars are based solely on the sammiches.
I still think the pizza is -eh-
    and the pasta is ok.

I came here with some friends based on their strong recommendation. A couple months ago, we ate at Mama's pizza on Rice Street, a place that I hold dear to my heart. They suggested a similar place, just south of Lake Nokomis, so we all came to see what the fuss was about.

I find it hard to judge pizza, because there are so many varieties, that they just don't compare well. I think Fat Lorenzo's has the best overall hand tossed pizza in the metro. They have the best crust that I've ever tasted on a hand-tossed pizza. Some people leave the last crusts to their pizza, but to do so here would be a crime. It is better than most places bread sticks, very airy and chewy.

They also have the best mozzarella cheese that I've tasted. And they do NOT skimp on the cheese. There is easily twice as much cheese on this pizza than your typical pizza joint. There was so much cheese, in fact, that we had to eat the pizza with a knife and fork. You can't get it to fold. We ate an extra large pepperoni, 18 inches. I think it was $18, but it stuffed 4 big eaters.

I've read reviews that strongly recommend the gelato, as well. It was hard to make room, but for good gelato I'll make room. I'm glad that I did. They say that you sense of smell and taste can bring back old memories. Their Strawberry gelato is a taste that I've been searching for, for the past 10 years. When I was a kid, probably 4 years old, my Mom bought some strawberry creamcicles only a few times. I just remember really loving the flavor and I've been buying strawberry creamcicles since I've been 19, in vein, trying to find that same exact flavor. I found it this weekend, unexpectedly, and was transformed back to He-Man and Big Wheels the instant I ate the gelato.

Other than the deja vu, everyone at the table agreed that the gelato was fabulous. As full as we all were, we couldn't eat our dessert fast enough. On our way out, the waiter told us to sample another flavor. I had the cappuccino flavor and it was equally delicious.

The restaurant itself is pretty tiny. There are only a dozen tables, so if you are eating in, there will probably be a wait. Not too long though, on a Saturday night, the wait was only 15 minutes. Luckily for me I was 15 minutes late, so as I walked in, our table was ready. Cool artwork on the walls too.

    Damn.
It's in a weird location, and the murals all over the place are a bit much-and I never think anything's a  bit much-but that's where I'll stop complaining.

The pizza was huuuuuge, the mozzerella made from whole milk, pretty cheap and there's gelato! Not even fake gelato but serious gelato!

I like their style here. They have beer and wine.

    This is serious pizza.

I have nothing bad to say about this place.  If you're looking for pizza that isn't all hoity-toit like Luce or Galactic, get on down to Lorenzo's for a slice or full pie.  They've also got this spinach and feta stromboli thing that will take years off your life but you'll be loving every morsel of it.

There's a tiny parking lot but it fills up fast.  I've never had an issue finding street parking within a block though.

Do you require a vegan cheese-substitute or faux chicken to enjoy a pizza pie? No?

Then you would probably enjoy Fat Lorenzo's as much as I do. Im serious folks, if you are allowed to eat any sort of normal pizza, this is hands-down the tastiest in the Cities.

The pizzas are big, loaded with toppings, and I think the secret is in the sauce because these slices are juicy. There aren't many pizza joints around that have a signature sauce--they are usually trying to wow us with their organic this and substitute that. I get a spinach and feta cheese pie but the delicious sauce is always the highlight.

As for ambiance, it can be a great date spot or a place to take your giant Italian family. It's not quiet but the walls are painted with scenes of coastal Italy that you can peer at from your little red booth.

They also have a great selection of beers, including some delicious imports from Italy and other places you didn't know made yummy beer.

Last but not least is the waitstaff. I've had the same guy every single time but he is so dag nice that I think they are genetically breeding super-friendly clones of him behind the counter. He jokes, chats, smiles, checks in on you, and even brings you your food in a reasonable amount of time. Wowzers.

They even have a full-service gelatto counter but I'm usually too full to get ice cream after eating here. Did I mention this place had the best pizza in the Twin Cities? Yeah, there's never room for gelatto.
