My criteria for heading to Fishbone was that I needed a place to take my mother on her birthday, and she wanted spicy! Â As luck would have it, we got fun, comfortable atmosphere, and perfectly prepared food...though somehow, mom forgot about the spicy.
Larger than it looks from outside, Â Fishbone is stylishly decorated in a way that ALMOST brings N'awlins to the shores of lake Nagawicka. Â The large, sunken dining room at the re r looked quite cozy, and provided sep ration from the front dining area and the bar.
When we heard the special...pecan crusted grouper, with a garlic cream sauce over sweet potato dirty-rice, topped with crawfish meat,we all ordered it. Â At $20 I was thinking the $$ rating might be off. That only lasted until the massive fillet arrived perfectly cooked, and flavor fully balanced.
Going here was a total fluke (Yelp! Aided, but a fluke nonetheless). Â My many return visits will be intentional!
From out of town and celebrating the birth of our first grandson. Couldn't have chosen a better place. Sat outside on a beautiful evening on the day of the birth (they could use some hedge clippers to spruce up the lake view) and our waitress was exceptional in spirit and helpfulness. Started with one of the best margaritas I have ever had. Then crawfish bisque and jambalaya. Ended with the chocolate bread pudding; brought the left-overs of that home for our daughter and new Mom on her first day home! Â We hope they stay in business and prosper for a thousand years.
Review Source:"Wonderful Fish Special"
We have visited Fishbones several times, so we asked for a table in the back - the 'bright' acoustics can make conversation challenging.
Cajun cuisine is my personal favorite, so they don't have to be too amazing to be terrific. Nevertheless, when Jillian suggested the special we went for it and it was wonderful.
I wish I'd remembered the exact name - just ask Jillian. What I do remember is pasta with blackened shrimp and cod in a rich (but somewhat spicy) cream sauce. I asked her for some extra bread just to clean out every drop - "You didn't like it?" she joked when she saw my spotless bowl. The portion size was enough to split. It was a birthday celebration so she brought a complimentary cheesecake topped with caramel and pecans. The cheesy part was especially creamy and delicious.
I would actually rate this place 4.5 stars. Â It's my favorite restuarant in the Milwaukee, Waukesha area. Â I've been here numerous times for numerous occaisons. Â I've always had great food, great service and a great experience. Â The only thing that keeps it from being 5 stars is the creme brulee. Â I love creme brulee and the one here is just average. Â I've had it several times and it's always a little "soupy" and not firm enough. Â I'm not sure if it's because it melts a little when being brulee'd or if they just don't let it set long enough. Â Other than than, I love, love, love this place!
Review Source:We got to Fishbone's early, around 6:15, and we were glad to beat the crowds. Â This place gets hoppin!
Our server was friendly, and the food was outstanding. Â We both got Caesar salads with blackened crawfish ontop, she got a crawfish bisque, I a gumbo, and then we split a "Ragin Cajun" pasta. Â This was crazy good! Â Andouille sausages, chicken and shrimp with long pasta in a Cajun cream sauce. Â
We washed it down with some Spotted Cow ale, which was the perfect accompaniment. Â My one and only dig is that the male host was a bit gruff, and seemed to be in a bit of a sour mood as he seated us. Â No biggie though, cause we only had to interact with him once.
Hit this place up next time you're nearby - you won't be sorry!
Oh man!  We dined there with my brother and his son who are from SoCal and D.C., so as foodies, they know crab cakes (seafood), quesadias  and guacamole.  We enjoyed all three!  Because I'm a crab cake officianado, I hold every restaurant who makes them to the highest standard.  Either bring it, or stay home!  Well.....they brought it!!!  Made me proud!  The pulled pork quesadias were delicious with just the right amount of gooey cheese and succulent pork. The lump crab cakes left us fending for who would get the last bite!  This is a must try!
Review Source:I try to sample the local businesses when I am way on business. So far out of the places I've tried around the Dalafield area, this is the best.
For not being a brew pub, it has a good selection of beer which includes an authentic Weiss, domestics, craft brews and even some custom made beer just for the Fishbone.
For appetizer I had the Red Beans and Rice appetizer which was quite flavorful. The rice was a little al dente but when well with the rest of the dish. The chicken and sausage added a nice blast of flavor to the already delicious broth that flavored the beans and rice.
For dinner, I had the Catfish Tacos. It came with some fresh home made tortillas, guacomole on top, a nice charred fillet of catfish which was on top of some home made 'cole slaw' which was almost a salad. There was also a ramaken of baked beans on the side.
Everything was well seasoned and cooked to perfection. I would definitely suggest trying these Tacos.
The inside was a little bit dark, just a little bit loud, and bit cozy, but I wouldn't take away any points unless it was uncomfortably so in any of these categories.
My wife and I found this spot a few months ago. Â We LOVE this place!! Â The atmosphere is incredible, every time we go (about once a week) we meet another couple here and end up talking most of the night at the bar. Â The age group often here is probably 35-65 and simply amazing.
Now to the food... Â
AMAZING Â - we have tried most everything on two menus - and have not been dissapointed. Â They serve mexican and cajun. Â My wife and I used to drive into West Allis to the other cajun restaurant - not anymore. Â You can not go wrong here! Â Plenty of seating, an outdoor patio, and an amazing bar over looking the lake! Â Hurricanes, and a special bones ice tea that is sort of like a gold margarita and a long island mixed together - yum!
My husband who lived in South Texas loved their Cajun food, and that's saying a lot! He had The red beans & rice, gumbo & chocolate bread pudding.
I had The chicken enchiladas and Creme Brûlée and both were great! They were great about doing gluten free too and telling me their options.
Its not a huge space, so we waited about 10 minutes for a table while getting drinks at the bar.
The place gets hopping with The bar crowd after 9pm
Ok, so I had the jambalaya here a few years back and hated it. I never wanted to return, but alas, I found myself at Fishbones once again to give it another shot. I like the funky decor, but the lighting is atrocious.
Fast forward to the food. Blackened crawfish appetizer, 7/10 for me. Very good, would order again. Next: red beans and rice. Oh... my... God... I will come back just for that! Unbelievable. The beans are in a delicious cup of broth with tomatoes, andouille sausage and chicken on a plate of rice... so good. 10/10. Next up: Norwegian salmon streudel. Salmon, crawfish, and spinach baked into a puff pastry with this sort of corn slaw. 8/10. Definitely great, would order it again. My favorite entree, though, was on my wife's plate: blackened red snapper. Delicious fish, perfectly seasoned... try it for yourself. Congratulations, Fishbones, you won me over.
Tried (My review in parentheses)
- Junkyard Gumbo (5/10)
- Ragin' Cajun Pasta (5/10)
- Key Lime Pie (2/10)
Yelp really needs to add 1/2 stars and needs to change up the wording that goes along with the star rating. I'd give this place about 2.5 stars. In my opinion, 3 stars is "Meh, I've experienced better."
I'm new to Cajun. I've had Heaven on Seven in Naperville, IL and that was damn good! That was the first Gumbo I've ever had and it was spectacular! It's not big and lumpy, but there is just so much cajun flavor in there that the andouille only acts as a bonus! But, this isn't Heaven on Seven, this is Fishbone.
The gumbo was an amazing deal here at Fishbone. For only $4 you get a cup of gumbo, but that cup is on a bed of rice with a fist-size piece of fresh baked bread...too bad the bread was just whatever. Flavorless...meant only to maybe sop up some gumbo that went overboard...and believe me, there's a ton of ship-jumpers on the plate. There were giant pieces of chicken and sausage littered around the bowl and there was so much in the bowl that you couldn't help but to knock a few off just to fit your spoon in there. So, unlike 7onHeaven, this is very lumpy. Chicken pieces were like an inch long, and some healthy chunks of Andouille Sausage and tomatoes were crowdin the pool. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't think chicken naturally fell off in cubes. These chicken cubes kind of reminded me of the breaded chicken patties you buy at the grocery store...just not breaded. You know, that processed chicken texture? Whether it was or wasn't, I can't say, but the chicken just didn't feel right. The gumbo altogether was...ok, I didn't hate it, so I guess that's a good thing huh?
Now, I just couldn't figure out what I wanted on their menu. Their menu is decent but for some reason, today I just really wasn't feelin 1 ingredient on each of the items. Nothing wrong with the ingredients themselves, just the mood I was in. I could go for enchiladas...but wasn't feelin the verde sauce tonight. I could've done some kind of crusted chicken...but not Chorizo crusted chicken. So, I settled on the Cajun Pasta.
The pasta was just...ok. I'm not all that much of a stickler for presentation or plating, but this just looked like someone had a giant vat of this pasta and scooped it out. No garnish, no nothing...but hey, garnish doesn't really add much, so it's ok, the food must be excellent! ... nope... Very mediocre pasta in a red cream sauce. Menu said it's supposed to be a spicy cream, but I beg to differ...like really beg... like I panhandle to differ! Mushrooms were ok, there's the cubic chicken again, sausage was good (but it's Andouille sausage...what's there not to like?), and tomatoes were good too. It was all a rather uninspiring dish. It was salted ok, I mean while eating it, I started to wonder about the sodium content of this dish and my blood pressure, which only tells me 2 things. 1) The saltiness is in the upper ranges of my comfort level (nicely done), and 2) How boring does this dish have to be that I'm thinking about sodium content and blood pressure?! How uninspiring does this dish have to be that my only thoughts are about life AFTER the meal and not about enjoying the meal at hand?!
I mean, listen, don't get me wrong, it's not a bad "blech!" dish at all, it's just, well, boring. There's no excitement. There's just nutrition...and sodium! It's decently packed. It's very worth the $10 I paid (because there was a special), but I would NEVER pay $18 (original price) for this!
I am not a pie guy, but I figured, since I didn't have any fun with the rest of the meal, I'll get some dessert. I've heard great things about Key Lime Pie, so I decided to get it. Now, I know what lemon zest is, and I'm sure there's such thing as lime zest...but what these guys did IS NOT IT! YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG! I get a decent size pie with strips of lime peel. Being unexperienced, I took a bite with some of the lime peel, and OMG WTF?! What is that?! Who eats that?! The pie itself is fine, and then you chew on the super bitter lime peel..and you swallow the pie, but the freaking lime peel is still in your mouth and each bite is just devastatingly painful!!! BLECH! Ok, so I get it, brush the lime peels off, right? Fine. I take another bite, BLECH!!! WTF?! They freaking baked, or whatever it is you do with pies, the freaking lime peels inside! WHO DOES THAT?! WHY?! IT'S DISGUSTING! UGH! I'm seriously pissed! Somebody teach these guys how to use ZEST! It was literally...LITERALLY...a garbage pie! I'm actually offended by something I ate! This is ridiculous! On a side note, if it weren't for the lime pieces, it may have been a pretty good pie.
The skinny: Maybe I ordered the wrong stuff, but I thought it was boring, and the Key Lime Pie just PISSED ME OFF! Seriously, when was the last time a culinary creation had the power to illicit an emotion of pure anger?!
