My boyfriend and I went here for lunch. We both couldn't decide if we wanted the burger & salad or the chicken. So we told the waitress we would like both plates and we will just spit it. We got the Panteen Chicken(i think) and the Cheeseburger, salads with both. (First the app was the yummy yummy Pimento Cheese & Jelly! soooo good)

Well the waitress went above and beyond brought out 4 plates, splitting both our meals. We werent expecting that. Personally I LOVED the chicken, the burger was good, the salads were amazing and fresh.

I am glad that even though they have only 4 things or so on the menu, they learned to masters them!

Darn... now I am graving the Pimento Cheese & Jelly..... ugh..

After spending FIVE days at St. Vincent's w our mom, my sister and I got some much needed vitamin D this past Sunday sitting on the patio, sipping a Mimosa and having a delicious Brunch with an excellent Atmosphere....  Thanks to FIVE for the much needed break!  Can't wait to come back for the full menu!

Delicious food all around, but the highlights for me were the house salad and the horseradish sauce that accompanied my burger. The salad was anything but chintzy, as so many other "house salads" are: it was a bed of fresh mixed greens, with almonds, feta, and some huge blackberries atop it. The horseradish sauce was zippy and was great both drizzled on my burger and dipped out with my fries. Our server was attentive and quick on refilling our glasses (though the water carafe was also left at the table for us in her absence), and all our orders came out scrumptiously. The burger was cooked well done (I wasn't offered an option for temp) but still juicy enough, and the thin-cut fries were generously portioned. Also, the baked avocado appetizer was excellent, so definitely give that a try if you're an avocado fan.

The patio was full and the inside was a little on the empty side when we got in around 6:45, but within the next hour the place was hopping. They don't take reservations, so get in early for a group bigger than four or so. The decor is a trendy upcycled look, which fit the place pretty well, and both of the bartenders I spotted were sporting bow ties (and could actually pull them off) which was a fun/quirky detail.

Five restaurant gets five stars from me! We ordered chicken on chicken on chicken. It was hella expensive and hella worth it. Get the Yoshi's Chicken appetizer. Don't run away from it because you can't handle spicy and the description mentions sriracha. It's not spicy at all and has only the sriracha flavor. This dish was so delicious and was basically like chicken clump balls of goodness. It has so much flavor in it for it just to be a giant popcorn shrimp appetizer so of course it was gone in less than 5 minutes.

The Paneed Chicken is this delicious pasta with even more chicken. The bread given with it is unnecessary because even though you may consider that these food items may compliment each other, you've already finished the incredible pasta in front of you before you got to the bread and now you have nothing to eat it with.

I love this place. I want to come back and try everything on the menu since there's a possibility that you can. You might have take out a loan on this but I doubt you'll regret that.

This restaurant has a fun atmosphere, but it is fairly loud.  We went there to meet some friends, and it was a little difficult to hold a conversation.  The food was very good though!  Loved the tuna dip  , shrimp appetizer, and the rib eye was perfectly cooked.

I will definitely be going back!

Well...really. I went here expecting to be blown away as I love the concept. I was blown away alright.. Just not in the sense that I expected.

In short, I ordered the Thick Cut Pork Chop. It was served to me raw, with cold, bloody meat. Though I know that Trichinosis is less of a concern in modern society I still want my pork cooked to 149 degrees. If you're going to do less than that you should at least let me know and not act as though you could care less upon complaint.

The Baked Avocado and the overall concept kept this from being a 1 STAR.

Definitely a very cool restaurant concept! Only 5 appetizers, 5 entrees, 5 cocktails on this menu. They do have daily specials which all looked pretty yummy.

They decor is funky/eclectic and very laid back. Service from  the hostess stand was great, unfortunately once our large group was seated our waiter was not. He disappeared for long periods of time and was very slow taking and bringing out our orders. Based off the Monday night crowd, that should not have been the case.

The food did make up for it though. All entrees our served with their house salad which I enjoyed. The salad was topped with fresh berries and goat cheese and a light citrus dressing. I ordered the friend shrimp which comes with the salad and shoe-string fries...it was good but not amazing. I liked the batter they used and the shrimp were cooked perfectly but the meal was WAY too salty. I did really like their homemade cocktail and tartar sauce. You can tell they definitely use lots of fresh herbs.

All in all it was a good experience. If I am in Birmingham again I would like to come back and try their brunch items.

    1. Love the food.  2. Love the menu.  3. Love that it's open late.  4. Love their brunch.  5. Love the service.

As many have said, I'm a fan of the minimalist nature of the menu--not having to sort through a ton of choices and banking on doing a few things and doing them well is a cool concept. Among our table we tried a pork chop, fish, and a steak. The pork chop seemed to be the winner. All the sides were great, and the Yoshi's chicken appetizer hit the spot. Will be back for sure. Quite an amazing job they did on the interior remodel, you would never know Golden Rule was in there before with the way they decorated for FIVE.

I thought FIve was okay. If you are looking for a place to have a fun cocktail in a nice atmosphere this is it. The bread pudding was super! The food was good but a little over priced. I recommend going for a cocktail, the bread pudding and the atmosphere.

FIVE stars for FIVE. I love this restaurant. It's original. It's creative. It's fun. It's tasty. It's just all around a great place to go. The "5" theme makes it easier to make a decision. The portion sizes are pretty good, and I've even shared with someone and been pretty full. If I could afford it, I'd eat here every night!

i absolutely love FIVE.  we've been here multiple times since moving to birmingham last summer, it's become a go-to spot when we have friends visiting from the great white north.

i actually like the limited menu here - you don't have to deal with a 15 page menu a la cheesecake factory, only to order the wrong chickenwhatever that you forgot you don't actually like.  for those with menu ADD like me, it's a godsend.  all in all, FIVE offers a fun atmosphere, great food, good drinks, nice beer & wine selection.

FIVE is ten in my book.

After a couple days of insane work hours at a local hospital, my team decided it was time to treat ourselves to a decent dinner. Brushing aside the pile of protein bar wrappers, Smart Water bottles and laptop chargers we had amassed in our makeshift war room we asked the staff for suggestions. When they started out with "This place has so many good places; Cheesecake Factory, PF Changs..." we knew we were on our own.

After a few minutes research, my Sales Engineer had us in two cars headed towards Five. The dark atmosphere and excellent music definitely appealed to us. The SUPER limited menu gave us a minute of hesitation but our waitress cheerfully carried us through. Beers, Baked Avacado and Shrimp Queso promptly made appearances, burned brightly and then were empty bowls/mugs on our table. The follow on of Chicken and a Braised Short Rib you would slap-yo-momma for reminded us that eating should be more than just getting calories into our tired bodies.

Thank you Five, for feeding a bunch of hungry out-of-towners on a rainy Birmingham night.

Went to the opening of Five in ATHENS, GA last night. It was a great evening. Somehow I showed up at 8PM, by myself, and found a seat at the sushi bar at the very back of the restaurant; it was a perfect bird's eye view of the entire place (oh the chandeliers!!!). The stool next to me was open for about a minute, when a beautiful man, also by himself, sat down. The sushi (tuna, salmon, yellowtail) was so fresh, I think the tails were moving 45-minutes prior to my arrival. Apparently, the tuna was flown in by private jet some five hours earlier or something crazy like that. The conversation with this stranger was far better than any date I'd been on recently; it was smart, funny, easy, and entertaining. The sushi chef, who was visiting from Florida to help get the place set up, was so friendly, sexy, and fun. The TNT roll is amazing! So is the roll with steak...but I forgot its name, delish. I did't care for the Cowboy role, it has the crab salad on top, which I ordered without the cream cheese.  It was one of those experiences where the night was just overall gorgeous. Thank you Five, I can't wait to go back. Welcome to Athens!

Five was alright.  They've done a great job with updating the interior.  There have been a few restaurants in this building that have not made it and I'd love for one to be successful more long term.

David ordered the menu item of the day--Monday is Red Beans and Rice.  It was ok, but could have definitely had more flavoring.  I had the Paneed Chicken.  It was tasty.  The breading was great and the chicken was moist.  The gal raved about the citrus salad dressing that comes already on the salad.  While it was good, it tasted more like orange juice to me than it did a citrus dressing.

I did enjoy the Pineapple Jalapeno Margerita after they added more jalapenos and I believe David enjoyed his Old Fashioned.  If someone asks me to go back for lunch, I'd give it a try--but I'll go in with low expectations.

I've been trying to get to this place for a while now. I sometimes wish we could .5 (half) stars because this place has potential; so it's a bit better than a three, but not yet a four.

As others have said, I love the atmosphere. It's one of those hangouts where you could probably stay all night laughing with friends and watching people. The host and servers were very attentive and knowledgable about the menu.

Overall, the food was ok. It wasn't awful or bad, it just didn't impress me.  We got the shrimp queso and that was pretty good. Really thick (the way I like it) and good chunks of shrimp throughout. Their menu is limited in terms of daily entrees offered so there aren't a lot of options or choices.  I understand the concept of "FIVE", but I wish there were FIVE really good options.   I liked their appetizer options better than the entree options.

I finally settled on the cheeseburger since I saw that others raved about it. Well, it was ok. The beef was good but the burger in it's entirety was lacking something. I believe it was $12 or $13 so I honestly expected a gourmet bun and lots of condiments. and over-the-top extras.  The bun was soft, but it was a basic out of the bag Merita Bread bun. There were no tomatoes or slices of onions.  Instead there was a 'sauce' made up of tomatoes, onions, relish & other elements. This wasn't a sauce in its consistency, but it was more like a 'slaw'. It was way too chunky and crunchy so I didn't put it on my burger.  I wanted basic tomatoes or at least an option to add them, but I don't they even have tomatoes because I asked if I could get a couple of slices.  I can appreciate that they tried to do something different than an average burger, but I don't think they got it right this time. The burger comes with fries and a salad.  Fries were basic, salad was good with berries and nuts, etc.  Better than the average bag salad.

There weren't any other entrees that I was dying to try as I was a little surprised at how pricey they were. I will pay for quality, but I'm not sure if this place is up to that standard just yet.

In closing I will say that this is a place I would go to after being out  on the town or an event with friends and you just want a quick drink or appetizer before going home for the night. I will go back to hang out, but not to get a substantial meal experience. I didn't walk away with the "wow that was great" factor.  But I will try it again soon.

You know a restaurant is good when you can't try anything new because you can't imagine it getting better. The food here is phenomenal! I've had the burger which is served with a really nice salad with a sweet vinaigrette dressing. This has to be the best hamburger I've ever eaten in life. Everybody keeps telling me to try a few other places but I think its going to be nearly impossible to top this burger.

Also tried the duck tacos. Sounds strange but it was fantastic. A few notes about the restaurant, it gets loud. So while the food is perfect for a date, the atmosphere is usually not. I would go later like maybe 9:30-10pm for a quieter time.

    Happy Dining from Paul Rogers

FIVE is, as mentioned by others, a great concept. The space is great looking and comfortable. Location is equally good. So, why three stars? The food. If you are going to base your entire concept around a limited menu of 5 items, then it would seem logical that those 5 items would be amazing. That seems to not be the case. I have been consistently underwhelmed by the food. Note that I did NOT say the food was bad. The dishes are just plain. However, I would in good conscience recommend FIVE to friends for the atmosphere and for drinks.

Enjoyed Sunday brunch here today. Service was slow but the food was great! My friends and I enjoyed the patio and were told (for future reference) that dogs are welcome. I've heard concerns about the small menu, but the selections all sounded so good that I had a hard time choosing between 3 of the 5 entrees. The shrimp and grits were delicious, and my friends enjoyed the burger and the burrito, as well as mimosas. I'll look forward to going again soon.

Food was very good, everything was great. They also went to lengths to accomodate my dinner partner, who is vegetarian; the chef fixed her something special. I had the duck tacos, which I've never experienced beforehand. They were great, the duck was moist and seasoned properly. Portions were more than adequate, and the pricing was very reasonable for the quality and quantity.

Don't have enough experience to give it five stars, but it's definitely got potential.

Beautiful little bar and restaurant in a little commercial/entertainment area right up the road from UAB.  The interior is gorgeous.  Massive carved wood bar, stained glass, pressed tin ceiling, exposed brick, and rustic aged leather seating with what look like salvaged wood tables.  Very classy look, open and sunny too.  Wish there were more spaces like this to hang out in Nashville!  Also notable were the huge portraits of the Dali Lama and Paul "Bear" Bryant in equally honored positions flanking the giant menu chalkboard.  : )

The offerings correspond nicely.  Small selection of nice cocktails and good beer, and a short menu of French-inspired southern food.  I had an excellent dish of "panéed chicken", three juicy, meaty thighs roasted crisp with a light very slightly tangy glaze involving copious amounts of shallots.  Reminds me of a dish an ex used to make me called poulenc au vinagre.  Really good!  The bed of rice was nicer than I expected, with very fresh diced veggies and toasted almond slivers.  The house side salad was a little confused.  Blackberries, strawberries, AND dried cherries?  Still, good effort, and nicely dressed.

I tried an excellent local IPA from Good People brewing.  It's a refreshing west-coast style IPA, and I hope it makes it into Tennessee before long.

Great atmosphere, with friendly attractive staff, talkative students, and a couple families in for a Saturday lunch.

I'm glad I stopped by, and I hear the restaurant may be expanding to Nashville and/or Knoxville before long!

Great service, awesome food! Will be back. The menu pretty much has 5 different things to choose from for each course of the meal. The five things are diverse enough that there will be something that you want. Stuffed guacomole was really good and the burger was great! They change the menu up every now and then which is great. Yea, there is only five things to choose from, but they do all five things really well! O yea and they have really interesting/good cocktails

I love the FIVE in Ttown. These two starts represent my hope that the Birmingham location will work out the problems in the kitchen and become more like its delicious counterpart in Tuscaloosa.

My blueberry-mojito type drink was delicious and refreshing.

I ordered the shrimp appetizer and was very disappointed. Too much breading & sauce; I couldn't taste the shrimp at all. I could have purchased something better in the frozen food section of Costco.

Mashed potatoes were good, but dense. (You know you want fluffy mashed potatoes!)

FIVE has one of the coolest interior spaces I've seen in Birmingham. I find it shocking that it used to be home to Jim N' Nicks- I wouldn't have realized it was the same place if my dinner companion hadn't reminded me. Of course, my mom asked if it smelled like Jim N' Nicks (aka like smoke and BBQ), but, again remarkably, it did not.

    Decor gets 5 stars.

The concept is also quite cool- it is the minimalist approach to the dining experience. 5 entrees, 5 cocktails, 5 reds, 5 whites. That's it. I had the Black and Blue Mojito, and it gets 5 stars. I was also intrigued by the Pineapple Jalepeno Margarita, but tequila + Alden S = potential disaster, so I forwent that experience.

The reason for the 3-star review is the food itself. Food is the reason we eat- right? I ordered the burger (no bun, obviously), and was informed that it came with two patties cooked medium-well. Medium-well??? What kind of meat are they serving me? I am a medium-RARE girl, so, this freaked me out a bit. I asked for it to come medium, figuring I'd split the difference between cooking out whatever that meat had in it and ordering the way I like it.

The service was good- our waiter was a bit nervous (I'm assuming he's new), but attentive and very good at refilling water glasses (necessary during the heat wave). When my food arrived, I assessed. American cheese covered two burger patties (star lost for American cheese- at least give me some cheddar...) with some type of "Five Sauce" on it, a large fruity salad sat to the right and some good, thin fries rounded out the meal. There was some type of dressing or dipping sauce that tasted very bitter to me, so I avoided it. Regular ketchup was available, which made me sad. Granted, I'm spoiled by Dram's homemade rosemary ketchup and all the deliciousness that accompanies a Chez Fon Fon burger. Everything tasted... ok. I wasn't particularly impressed by any of the offerings, thus, 3 stars.

It was nice/cute that the waiter brought us two cookies with the check, although I couldn't participate in eating them (gluten allergy, check!). All in all, I would go back to Five for the ambience, the cocktails, and the chandeliers. I just kept thinking how cool it would be to host a party here, so hopefully that will happen for me someday soon.

Five, I really want to love you. But, with all the great food available in Birmingham, I just can't place you in my top list. If the food taste/quality improves to the level of their decor and cocktails, I'm pretty sure Five will become a must-stop place for the 'Ham.

I've eaten here twice now.  Both times the food and service was superb.  I have tried the ribs (excellent both with and without the sauce) appetizer, the shrimp appetizer (very tasty), and the fried avocado appetizer (different and good but not as good as the ribs or shrimp).  I have also tried the pork chop (scrumptious), and the Paneed Chicken (very tasty).  My favorite thing though was actually the side salad that came with the meal, it was a perfect blend of flavors.  Oh, and the one desert they have is white chocolate bread pudding that was out of this world.   They have only 5 items of each kind on the menu, 5 main dishes, 5 appetizers, 5 white wines, etc.

I think that the idea behind Five is a very cool concept.  When you go in, it's hard to believe that it used to be a JIm-N-Nicks's!  The whole place is really cool, and we went pretty late, so I didn't get a gauge for the crowd that this place draws.  The first thing that I noticed was the really cool looking bar...it reminded me of a western saloon and a speakeasy at the same time.  They have the standard cocktails, but also some really adventurous ones.  I had an Old Fashioned...the closest I'll get to being a 60's ad exec...and it was awesome - very fresh.  The bartender said that they have a killer brunch on the weekends, which I want to try.  We were too late for any of the food, hence the lack of a review...and the deduction of one star.  Would be nice if they served food until closer to closing on weekend nights.

We stopped in while traveling and now we wish this restaurant was in our home town.
We ordered the cheeseburger and paneed chicken dishes.  It was absolutely the best burger any of us ever tasted and the paneed chicken was also delicious.
If we ever end upon Birmingham again, we will definitely be back!

Love this new addition to the lakeview area! Went there for dinner w a friend last night. Once the place gets packed inside, the noise levels are very high, so we decided to wait on an outside table. The outside patio is very cute and love the bushes/flowers that give you a separation from the sidewalk. Ordered the black and blue mojito which was very tasty but I prefer the pink lemonade! Ordered the uptown shrimp for an appetizer which was delicious- to us, it was like a variation of bang bang shrimp. We decided to split the paneed chicken and cheeseburger. Cheeseburger was amazing, we don't eat Bacon so we couldn't have the original five sauce but whatever they substituted was mm mm good, just a nice juicy burger! The salad was also very refreshing, had strawberries and black raspberries. The paneed chicken could use a little bit more flavor, the breading itself was good but the chicken was a tad bland to us, not sure if this was just an off plate...but the garlic mashed potatoes were good~
Didn't have room for dessert but overall we were satisfied and will be coming back for more. Also the service was stellar, our waitor was very knowledgeable about the food and gave us good recommendations. Also gave us complimentary cookies, so sweet!
Can't complain ab service like that!

i went to Five this weekend to celebrate a friend's birthday.  i had heard about the concept of the restaurant from friends in tuscaloosa and was excited that we were getting one in bham.  i was immediately impressed with the decor - inside & out.  the decor was dominated by funky chandeliers, eclectic art, a large wooden bar & a bbq pit.

the concept of Five is pretty obvious... they have 5 whites, 5 reds, 5 specialty drinks, 5 snacks & 5 entrees, etc that they switch up.  with such a limited menu you have to bring your A game so i was anxious to dive in.  i had the pineapple jalapeno margarita from the bar & my night was immediately off to a great start.  the drink had fresh jalapeno slices that gave it just the right amount of kick.  all of the specialty cocktails i sampled were fantastic but my beer was always served lukewarm.

after we were seated we immediately dove into the snack portion of the menu.  we had the spring rolls and the baked avocado.  the avocado was fantastic but really hard to share so i would not recommend ordering it for your entire table.  i envisioned baked avocado slices that could be divided up easily but it was an avocado half (minus the pit), stuffed & baked and served on a salad bed.

for my main course, i ordered the chicken dish & it was just okay... not bad but nothing i would crave again. the standard sides are salad with a vinaigrette and mashed potatoes (fries are available too).  my potatoes were cold... if you are only going to have a few side items they better be spot on.

overall my experience was great... fun atmosphere with lots of energy.  a welcome addition to the lake view scene!
