This is a hidden gem! Â I could eat the grilled chicken salad from here every single day! Â The ingredients are always fresh and their dressing is homemade and delicious! Â Yes it's small and it can get crowded but all of the food is really good and fresh. Â My husband always gets their iced tea which they call Tiger Woo. Â I must admit it is good however very very sweet so I steer clear of it. Â You will not be disappointed by the food or the welcoming atmosphere!
Review Source:I can't believe there aren't more reviews for this place. Â The food is awesome, tastes as good as my moms or my own, the service is friendly, and although I live two blocks away from this place, it is about the best food your going to get in the neighborhood for the price, that isn't loaded with grease and other crap. Â Check it out if you can, the only downside is the place is so small, so I advise get carry-out take it home and enjoy it there.
Review Source:I absolutely LOVE dining at Five Loaves. The restaurant is cozy and the food is AWESOME. Â The Sunday special is always scrumptious and portions are large enough to merit a doggie bag. Â My favorite is the mac and cheese...YUM, YUM, YUMMY!!! My boyfriend raves about the catfish po' boy (a huge, heaping sandwich). Â All food is cooked the way your grandmother did on her very best days. The prices are low too!. Â My boyfriend and I dine well for under 20 bucks most days. Daily patrons include local entreprenuers, families, neighborhood regulars, the artistic crowd and a few celebrities. The wonderful thing about this place is you feel at home whether you're conversing with total strangers at the next table, or dining alone. I like the down-home ambience and retro music. Come to the southside and enjoy the best of the best!!!
Review Source:Yesterday I had a salad from Five Loaves and when you are moved to write a review about a salad you KNOW it's outstanding!
I am so happy to have Five Loaves back in the neighborhood and if you are not in my neighborhood, it's absolutely worth the trip. If I had known better I would have had the Grilled Tilapia salad. My mouth was watering when a friend was raving about it after I ate, but I was totally satisfied and full too!
I'm brining friends next week!
Go Five Loaves!
Nice eatery on the South side.  The food is always tasty but more importantly this  owner-operated establishment works hard to make you feel welcome.  That goes  a long way in my decisions on where to spend my money.  However I would love to see them step up the dessert options-  for sure someone can cook up a good ole fashion oven- baked banana pudding!!!  Yum.
Review Source:Some friends joined the boyfriend and me at this cozy eatery in honor of Black History Month. Â We were hungry and I came prepared in a roomy dress for the all-you-can-eat weekend special. Â When we arrived we discovered that only the sides were, indeed, all that we could eat. Â We decided it would still be worth the $12.95 price tag ($14 for the tilapia special). Â The food was great and the sides were all on point (greens with turkey, mac & cheese, and dressing). Â
The only down side was the fact that we couldn't actually take advantage of the unlimited sides because the waitress let the kitchen close without asking us for our refill orders. Â She corrected this indiscretion by giving us a key lime pie to-go. Â
This fine, black-owned eating establishment would be worth a second try, but next time i will go with plenty of time before they close so i can get all the regret for which I paid.
Aw! Â Five Loaves is the first restaurant at which I ate when I first moved to Chicago. Â I will always have a soft spot for it.
I was a disoriented social service worker wandering around aimlessly with a hungry, hyperactive child. He had wanted to show me around his neighborhood, but five minutes after we started walking, it was clear he had no plan. Â We first found a bakery with the most wonderful looking cookies and pies. My young ward lurched for it and I followed.
'I want a ten inch coconut cake." Â He pointed through the glass.
Forget it! Â Â The staff understood, and didn't try to sell me any other sugary treats. Â They told us to go to Five Loaves down the street.
As soon as I walked in, I loved it. Â It had a warm, unpretentious atmosphere and everyone who worked there looked up with a smile. Â I liked the art on the walls and the gospel music in the background.
The brat and I were seated next to the window, and the owner herself waited on us. Â After we looked through the menu, she came to take our order.
"Um, could you tell me . . . what is a salmon croquette?"
The monster's jaw dropped and he stared at me, but I got a very serious answer. Â I love salmon, so I ordered it.
"Do you want it fried or grilled?"
"Um, fried? Well, how do people usually order it?"
"Most people get it fried. Â But you can get it grilled."
"I love fried food. Â I'll get it fried."
"Honestly, I really think you should get it grilled. "
I gave in, and the young gentleman got some grilled chicken.
She was right - I loved it grilled.  It was moist and a little crisp on the outside and whatever fat there was came from the salmon, not from the pan.  It came with a fresh, crunchy salad and a housemade garlic  dressing that was fantastic.  We had collard greens and corn on the cob and mashed potatoes.  Everything was flavorful and nourishing and satisfying.  Very rarely do I characterize restaurant food (especially when it's unfamiliar to me) as "comfort food," but this is exactly what comfort food should be, including the atmosphere and the ambiance.  The brat calmed down because it was cool and we all treated him like an adult, and we both left with full bellies and a great conversation.
I haven't been there in a few months, but I did go several times last year, and was satisfied every time. Â I love the fact that I can go, order food, write in my journal, and just chill. Â I've noticed that most real restaurants (of all types) in Chicago don't have an atmosphere that's conducive to that, so I appreciate it at Five Loaves.
