Soooo Bomb!
This restaurant is right on the beach so provides great view and if there is a wait so go walk on the beach a little. Their oysters were so amazing and the ahi poke tuna was alright. I read some other reviews and it said the Cioppino was good so i thouhgt why not. DEFINITLEY GOOD! The one thing that was probably the best thing i remembered there was there was a maybe 15-16 year old girl at the front of the restaurant that was the sweetest thing. She helped us find the perfect seat and told us her favorite thin on the menu. Im pretty sure her name was Sylvana.
Mmm! Can't wait to come back!
The restaurant is located right towards the end of the boardwalk.
We had a great view of the beach with the great big open windows.
We started off with a plate of half dozen oysters that were so beautifully fresh n tasted amazing. We also tried the Ahi Poke Tuna & a cup of clam chowder- also good.
The star of the night though has to be our order of Cioppino. It was fully loaded and the sauce was delicious! Can't wait to order this one again!
I've been about 8 times and haven't had a bad dish or negative experience whatsoever. Great staff and great location, parking can be a bitch though.
I almost always get the ahi poke and oyster rockefeller. Tough to stray from those honestly. I've also had the fried chicken salad which was terrific and the fish & shrimp fried platter which was okay but a bit greasy for my taste. Clam chowder rocked. Fish tacos are damn good. Â My only complaint is that the small plates are priced like entres. It's not a big place so the food comes out quick and the staff are always asking if you need another glass of whatever. Very attentive. I'm becoming a regular and can be found at the bar treating myself at least once a week.
My husband and I stayed next door at the Newport Beach Hotel and quickly found the golden gem next door...the Fly N Fish Oyster Bar and Grill. Â
We were kindly greeted by the Executive Chef, who was personal and informative. Â He was knowledgable about where the fish he used actually came from and, appeared creative when speaking of his dishes. Â
We visited this restaurant twice, during our stay in Newport. Â All staff were friendly and food was absolutely amazing. Â Happy Hour was a great "bang for our buck" with ceviche, clam chowder, calamari and oysters highlighting the menu. Â We came back from lunch which again, was fabulous. Â I had the crab louie and my hubby had the fish and chips.
This place is a must go-to!
Before cooking dinner last night we had to take a ride down to the pier to pick up a bike we left there a week ago. Â While my bf was loading the bike in the back of his truck, I was staring at this never before seen "oyster bar"! How did I not know about this place, especially when I've been craving oysters for weeks. Â I no longer wanted grilled chicken for dinner, I NEEDED oysters. Â Luckily, the bf recently started liking oysters (thanks to me), so it wasn't hard convincing him to eat-out instead of cooking.... my treat!
-Kumamoto's $18 (small ones) - we ordered 1/2 dozen.. these are my #1 choice when ordering oysters and they were fresh and delicious... I could of ate 10 more
- Coconut Shrimp $14 - 4 big pieces in a sweet mango type sauce and pretty good cole slaw in the middle.. I enjoyed these
-Sea Bass (blackened) with their famous potato's - $22 - The flavor was really tasty, not spicy more of a smoked grill blackened taste, I loved it. Â The potatoes were amazing, I usually don't enjoy them that much but there were creamy and full of flavor. YUM
They have great white on tap ++++++++++
Good servers who like the food and give suggestions (always ask the server their fav)+
They offer happy hour food and drinks M-F 4-6 +
Ambience
It's a bit classier than the casual sea food joint but still has a casual bar ambience, it's on the smaller side which I like. Full bar and about a dozen high-top tables with open windows with views of the beach. Would be perfect to stop by and grab a drink and app/snack unlike most of the other large seafood places in the neighborhood, which are more of a scene. Moderately priced and fresh seafood - I will be back.
Poor customer service to locals is a shame. Been here a number of times and really enjoyed it. Unfortunately had a bad experience today. Â It's a beautiful Mother's day and we saw that it wasn't that busy inside and one of the tables in the window was open. My fiance and I decided to go in on a whim to have a glass of wine, but were turned away because the hostess said the table was reserved for 3 or more. She wasn't pleasant and was more interested in talking to her coworker than giving us any customer service. We live just around corner and will not be dining with Fly N Fish in the near future.
Review Source:Really great clam chowder here! It's not thick, gluey, or overly creamy. Just the right amount of everything- including bacon :)
The fish tacos were good as well. I just missed Happy Hour but it's 3-6, M-F with good drink/food specials.
The place has big windows so all the light comes in and you can see the beautiful beach as your backdrop.
Cool place to come to on the Pier and good service to top it off!
Come here for the clam chowder. Â This is what clam chowder that doesn't look or taste like glue is supposed to be like. Â The happy hour deals (3-6 PM) are bomb too. Â Draft beers are only $4, and well drinks are $5. Â And don't forget about the open view from the dining room to the oceanfront. Â Good times, for real.
Review Source:The service and the food were equally amazing.
As soon as I walked in I knew this was going to be an excellent experience. Â
Amanda greeted me immediately and wasted no time in getting my cocktail order and kindly offered recommendations on my entree.
I had the Fanny Bay and Kumomoto oysters and the catch of the day recommended by Amanda, sea bass Â
The house made tartar sauce was simply mind blowing. Â The sea bass cooked to delicate perfection. Â The oysters: Â EXEMPLARY. Â
To top off my already incredible experience: Â my car was about to get a parking ticket when THE OWNER RUNS OUT TO TELL THE METERMAID THAT HE WAS GOING TO ADD COINS TO MY FREAKING METER. Â
Fly and Fish: Â you have a loyal customer for LIFE.
As soon as I walked in here the name conjured up the below;
Hey waiter, what's this fly doing in my soup? Hmm, it appears to be the backstroke sir. Sorry, various versions of that joke have made the rounds since the old Catskills days, there are a ton of them: http://www.barrypopik.co… Â
Ahem, and now on to why we are gathered here, a review;
Wow, what a great addition to the beer joints in this area. Except for 21 Oceanfront that is. Great relaxing vibe immediately upon entering, especially with a very enthusiastic greeting from one of the waiters. Well well well, and look who is manning the bar this particular Saturday. My old friend Vince from his Alley days. Nice!
Of course the specialty here is fish (not flys), and I chose "wild salmon" ($23) off the "fresh catch" part of the menu. Comes with seasonal veggies and one side. I highly recommend the side that I went with: Signature House Scalloped Potatoes. Great side as they are delightfully spicy, made with jalapeno pepper jack cheese. Craving them already.
They have a couple of entrée salads, a burger, a mahi mahi sandwich, as well as a chicken sandwich. So definitely a good choice for a better lunch alternative than most other places in the pier area.
The ambiance is comfortably upscale, but still beach casual with a great view of the boardwalk and beach. The staff are all seasoned pros, and you will be well taken care of. The bar is kinda small, but there is a TV for your sports viewing pleasure.
I can see visiting often, at least in the off season, as it will be a tough ticket come summer time.
Been looking for a good oyster bar since moving out here a few years ago. Most places want to charge you $3 per oyster, which i think is insane. I understand if their fish monger is shipping them from japan or something, but we have great pacific oysters that should cost much less.
I came with a few friends on the first sunday of spring and the place was packed. The owner was posted at the door and I asked him for a table for four. He put me on the list and got my phone number (the only one waiting). We moved to the curb and patiently waited for him to call me. As I watched multiple groups leave, I began to get anxious for some great oysters. Then another 5 minutes passed, and I quickly became irritated. Other customers began walking right in and taking seats, as if it were an open bar. I watched the owner chat it up and drink at a back booth. So I walked to the front door and stood in the middle of it as a waiter exited, looked at me and carried a menu down the street for some reason. As more customers took seats, I tried to make eye contact with the bar tender to no avail. Then I was able to flag a waitress down and ask if it was just open seating to get lunch. Half the restaurant was empty now and I was clearly not entertained. She quickly sat me down after figuring out that I had been waiting and she was probably supposed to contact me to seat my party.
Luckily the food and waitress was pretty damn good. The drinks were well made as well. The oysters were clean and fresh. We got the sampler platter that included two kumamoto, blue point and fanny bay oysters. The fried fish came with a great tartar sauce. My mahi mahi sandwich was tasty and on a soft baguette. The only complaint was there was no sauce. I dont know if they forgot it or it's supposed to be dry. But adding my friend's tartar sauce made it much better. For drinks we got some bloody marys, wine, and a specialty whiskey cocktail. All good. A little pricey, but they appeared to be made from scratch. I'm sure their high balls are much cheaper than $10-12.
Most of the other reviews are pretty spot on. The short of it is: great food, at a poorly run establishment. I dont know if it's because we appear to be too young for a place like this. Blame the asian blood, but our group's average age is 31. The four of us ended up spending almost $200 on a casual lunch. We typically do for some stupid reason. And I'm sure it was much more than the two trophy wives sitting at a four-top at the front window drinking 1 mimosa each with no food. Maybe I watch too much Gordan Ramsay programs, but I noticed a lot that really put me off on this place. I do not appreciate being ignored. I do not appreciate hearing the staff argue, 5' away from me. I don't think the owner should appear to run the place, but not do much about it. But I do appreciate great food and I probably will be back for happy hour for $8/half dozen fanny bay oysters. I recommend you show up in a polo shirt and slacks in order to get taken care of properly. Sadly, none of this will probably matter, because the location and food will prop up the owner's poor attitude. I doubt he'll ever have to sell his rolex in order to pay the rent for this place.
Came here on a day that they were very busy...I got the oysters on the half shell and ahi poke which were great. Hubby got the fish and chips which were burned....had to send them back for a new one...the waiter was very kind about it though. Good service....good to have a decent place by the beach. We will try it again.
Review Source:Came here for Happy Hour on 2/15. We wanted a place where we could sit and watch the people, and one of our friends suggested this place.
While their happy hour isn't REALLY a happy hour (you're not getting extra cheap drinks OR food), the food is actually really good and the ambiance is nice.
I ordered a Sex on the Beach (not a HH special), and they made it nice and strong. The second round I ordered a screwdriver (should have been HH since it was a well drink!) and they tried to charge me $8.50 for it. When we asked about it when we got the check, the waitress took off the extra $3.50 but I sitll don't see what made that NOT a HH drink...hmmm...
I stole an oyster from the other people in my party. I normally do not like oysters. I can't stand when they are salty or grainy or fishy. This was none of those things. And it was nice and big! So I was impressed.
I also had a couple pieces of the calamari. Like with the oysters, the pieces of calamari were really well sized. The breading was very tasty, and they weren't too oily or too fried. Again, I liked 'em!
There are so many places in Newport to explore for Happy Hour, but if I wanted a nice place to sit for a bit, I'd be back. I'll definitely be recommending this place to others.
worst service ever!! Saturday 7pm only 3 tables with people lucky us
right.....no....we got menu and that was it.. 15-20 minutes later we decided to leave.I tried to make eye contact with any of the 4 waiter/waitress 2 were busy talking to two girls at back table. Went to Blue Water Grill and had excellent service and great food!
! As a local i was hoping for so much more
The first time I heard the name of this new restaurant, I thought it was some fast food grease-house. Not a dapper beach front seafood joint with class.
I've since been here 25 times, its right by my house, my girlfriend is addicted, and she always pays. Of course I'm gonna eat with her. Plus, I deserve it. I pick her flowers all the time.
This ocean-front seafood restaurant is small but cozy, it's always very clean and shiny with lots of white Cape-Cod decor and red brick wrapping your dining experience. Â
The food is incredible with obvious skill in preperation. They bring out a variety of sauces and put some effort in making your plate look appealing enough for Instagram. Seriously, take a picture. It will last longer. Â
We ordered a variety of appetizers and each one came out looking like it was made just for us, creativity can be tough with seafood but these guys did it.
Quick service, high-quality food, and especially clean environment make for an easy favorite. Definitely duck in and give it a shot, happy hour is 3-6pm and very, very worth it.
But make sure to try the oysters. Hot damn.
Seven of us went for friend's birthday dinner. Â Fun time, average food. Â Service was good, but a bit odd how our waiter would bring food items (soup and dessert) to the edge of ouur table and then have us pass them around to the right person.
The clam chowder soup was served in a coffee cup... what's up with that... and the broth was much too thick. Â Could have eaten it with a fork.
Halibut, my date's entree, was very bland... nothing to it... and the vegetables and rice came on a separate small plate. Â It was a bit backwards. Â The smallish sized filet of fish could have been placed on a small dish and the nice sized poritons of veggies/rice could have been on a larger plate. Â Bottom line, all items placed on the same plate would have made a better presentation.
My seafood pasta was good, but the red sauce had a bit of a pink hue to it. Â Not sure why... perhaps some white wine was in the mix? Â
It was Restaurant Week and the featured dessert was bread pudding. Â Not my thing, but it was tasty and the decaf coffee was excellent.
Nice ambiance, decent food... nothing grabbed enough however to want to race back.
I ordered tuna tartar to start and clam pot as an entree. tuna tartar was nothing to praise about, pretty bland but not horrible. however, the clam pot's base sauce/soup was extremely salty, the clams were rubbery, and few pieces were sandy. ughhh I really hate sandy shellfish! my teeth are crying!
Review Source:Ok so we all know if you going to open a Seafood place in Newport its got be good! There are too many other great places around to waste your time at a mediocre place. That being said, I personally loved my visit here. Our group ordered the Oyster platter and Calamari as an appetizer, three different kinds of Oysters, awesome. The Calamari was sooo good! Its a must. Some of the best I've had. I got the coconut shrimp, one friend got the clam chowder, and one got the bacon wrapped scallops. All where very good and I would recommend any of these dishes. But that calamari, that was really the best. As for service, we service we had a beautiful girl named Hazal, very nice, quick service, and really funny. I think I'm in love. Anyways I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone who wants good seafood. Get the Calamari, you won't regret it.
Review Source:4th visit since they have been open
Ate at the bar - friendly bartender-David, friendly crowd, good drinks and a nice cocktail menu
Owner introduced himself and asked about my food and service, which BTW was very good.
I've had the scallops in the past and thought they were great and I have also had various apps and fish entrees, all better than average.
I opted for the NY steak this time and was very impressed with the quality and value- good size steak at a reasonable price. I was also impressed with the staff's desire to please. They were very accommodating on my requests for veggie and sliced tomatoes with the steak instead of the normal accompaniments.
Overal, nice atmosphere, good location, good food and service.
Surf
I just want a little heads up when you are going to feed me garlic at noon.
It doesn't mean I won't eat it...in fact, I might even like it.
Many's the time that I have ordered that $5.95 garlic chicken lunch special Hop Sings, or had the pasta with garlic pesto at Tomaso's for my luncheon!
But (and it's a big "but"...go ahead, laugh...I know what I wrote), there are some things that maybe shouldn't be garlicky...like oh, let's see...tartare sauce.
When I ordered my Grilled Mahi Mahi today at Fly N Fish and it showed up with a little tartare sauce on the Sammie and a little more in a little silvery cup to slather on the Sammie to make it "extra creamy", I said to myself, "Donald, this is going to be a tasty, tasty treat, and you will be able to chat with people all afternoon without them recoiling in horror when you open your mouth".
Sadly, I was mistaken...and equally sadly, my minty fresh and sweet clean breath (for which I am known for far and wide) was a thing of the past after the first bite!
So I just kept eating.
I know what you're going to ask me...you're going to ask "Donald, didn't you smell the garlic before you took that bite?!?!?"
And I will answer you...no, I did not...I don't know if it just blended in with other restaurant aromas (Fly N Fish seemed to be using quite a bit of garlic today) or what, but I just didn't notice until it hit the old taste buds.
That said, the sandwich was OK (if a bit overpowered by the garlic) with the fairly standard 3-4 ounce fish portion on a soft roll, served with the usual accouterments.
And the rice pilaf that I had (instead of frenched fries...I know, I am as shocked as you are) was a nice touch, as well.
On a more positive note, the service was very good and my buddy, Art and I had very nice luncheon, catching up about our travels, families and other doings and goings on.
Fly N Fish seems to be designed to appeal to the more well heeled of Blackie's customers (from up the street)...the bar itself was cheek-by-jowl at lunchtime (and if you've ever been to Blackie's, you know that both "cheek" and "jowl" are apt descriptions of the patrons) with boat people and beach people...but rich ones.
The décor is "fishing lodge modern" all of the tables are "bar height" so your legs dangle a bit, regardless of where you sit.
I am not generally a fan of the bar height table dealy, but I get what they are trying to do...create a nice upscale place for the over 60, millionaire, beach and harbor rat crowd to go...someplace where there is more on the menu than a "special sandwich" and beer.
And they've surely succeeded!
That said, I probably won't make this place a regular stop on my paper route...I'm neither a beach or harbor rat and I can already get non-garlicky fish sandwiches next door at Mutt's.
Best fried oysters I have ever had! Â Plump, juicy and lightly breaded. Â The space is small and not made for large groups. When we went on a Sunday morning and the place was packed, but the hostess and waiter were very patient and the service was superb. There are a handful of window seats overlooking the Newport Pier, the beach (and parking lot), but it is great for people watching. The bar is small but pretty neat.
We'll be back.
This place has great ambience, and amazing seafood. I was greeted by the most hospitable hostess that set the mood for my entire experience. I had the raw oysters and ahi poke with a beer. I usually take my business to crab cooker and tried fly n fish. Gotta say this place is more up my alley, comin here again for sure.
Review Source:Went for the first time last weekend.food was very good(clam chowder excellent, jumbo shrimp cocktail very fesh,Mahi-Mahi sandwich delicious)
Read other reviews regarding dress attire.i like having a more s
upscale small place to go to.the decor was very nice.background music not to loud.sevice very good yet not intrusive.looking forward to many many more visits.
I was walking the beach and stumbled upon this amazing place. Had the Bacon Wrapped Scallops with a glass of Chateu St Michelle Chardonnay. This was right when they opened.
I again came in and had the Crab Cakes with Papaya Mint Salsa.. Amazing!!!
I am recommending this to all my friends.. I will be a regular here for sure..
Thank You Chef Julio!!!
Came here with some girlfriends about a week ago for an impromptu birthday celebration. Â We arrived at about 8pm on a Thursday night & the place was packed. Â Silly us, we didn't make reservations, but the manager & hostess were kind enough to grab an unused bar stool from another high-top table & make a place for the 3 of us at the bar. Â
We started with oyster shooters (which were amazing) & decided that they were so good that we would split a dozen more oysters. Â They were really reasonably priced & delicious, by the way. Â We also split a couple entrees & got a bottle of yummy pinot that was only $32 for the bottle. Â
The bartender even gave the birthday girl a complimentary dessert with a candle & the manager came over to chat & say happy birthday, too. Â
This place is an amazing little local find... Working in restaurants my entire life, I know when I find a good one to cherish it. Â I will be back time & again for great food & amazing friendly service.
Our experience was terrific! We ordered the jumbo shrimp cocktail, clam chowder, spicy ahi poke, bacon wrapped scallops and all were delicious. Plus they serve Delirium Tremens!
Great service and atmosphere! Â
This place is just what the boardwalk needed; my boyfriend and I can't wait to start our Sundays here!
This place opened a week or two ago, so service was still a bit slow. The food was good and the decoration was cute tho.
Food:
1/2 dozen catch of the day oysters for $13. Pretty tasty. Homemade cocktail sauce was good.
Blackened fish tacos (2) and coconut shrimp: these two small plates were yummy and had good presentation.
Decor: exposed brick walls, big mirrors and photos, old saloon bar stools. Nice open windows looking out onto the beach (altho u can't really see past all the cars).
This place would also be good to get apps before going out for dinner somewhere else.
