Love it here. Employees are always nice. The patrons are also always nice. Food and drinks are really good. Love the falafel sandwich (made fresh daily). The bean dip is also really good. They make really good drinks. I suggest trying the 'Where's my mind?" . Sooooooo good! Blackberries and awesomeness in a glass.
Plus they have Ski ball!
I've been here a handful of times and I'm always super impressed with their drinks and food. Â All of their ingredients are fresh and you can really taste the difference. Â The bartender was telling me the owner tries to get all of their ingredients locally which is nice, and explains why the quality of their food/drinks is so much better than most bars! It takes a little longer for them to make your food or drinks but it is so worth the wait! Â Plus I've been here with big and small groups of people and this place can easily accommodate both! It's my new fave in NoPo!
Review Source:Portland needs a few more dark and punky neighborhood joints like this. Â Foggy Notion is queer inclusive / punk inclusive / drunk inclusive heavy metal centric pinball having, skeeball playing little hole, and I think I love it. Â
So far, beers are cheap and fast, music is harder than I am,but I love that it exists, and rumor has it, they host a heavy metal karaoke night. Â
Best updated dive in the area :)
I have been running an event and working with this place going on 3 years. Somethings I like about it:
first- it's diversity: it really is a freak friendly place and has people from all walks of life hanging at the bar are with open arms.
second- it's cheap. i cant think of one drink that is over $6 and its a strong good poor.
third- vegetarian and vegan options on the menu that are both cheap and not disgusting.
fourth- a motherfucking covered smoking patio. there really isnt enough of those in this town and sometimes a gal needs a drink and a smoke. Â
its cons? its open really late and not open on mondays. i could do without the pinball and skeeball but a lot of other people seem to really like it. so theres that.
What a jewel of a neighborhood dive bar. Â Went here for Pirogi Tuesday. OMG - if you like real, fresh homemade perogies - then you gotta get em while they last and they don't last all night! Â Absolutely delish! Â 4 pirogies with sides of sour cream, mustard or sauerkraut. plus a lovely fresh field green salad for 8 bucks!
Who would have thought this little hole in the well would have good food as well as great drinks and specials and happy hour until 8pm and Skiball and games! Â A very fun hangout! Â and friendly assorted clientele as well as friendly service. Â Hey - show em a tattoo on Tuesday night and get 2 for 1 well drinks. Â I'll be back!
Went to The Foggy Notion with a friend the other night for ShanRock trivia. First time with ShanRock, first time at the Foggy Notion, too. Both experiences were great, even if our team did place last! The strong drinks helped us get over it fast.
The bartenders played trivia with us, as well, people were friendly, and overall this just seemed like a great neighborhood bar with a welcoming feel. I will definitely be back.
The bookie totally sucks and the sound is terrible. They need to do some sound treatment if they want to keep doing live shows there. They would be better off firing the bookie they have and hiring someone with at least a hint of professionalism. The thing that sucks the most is that I wanted it to be awesome because I love Velvet Underground, I love that song, it is one of my favorite V.U. songs so when Portland's very own Foggy Notion let me down, they let me down hard!
Review Source:"It's been 7 hours, and 15 days,
Since you took your love away.
I go out every night and sleep all day.
Since you took your love away.....
..I can eat my dinner in a fancy restauraaaaaanhhhnnnt, but nothing,
I say nothing can take away these bluuuuuuuuess..... "
Blue Parrot, we hardly knew Thee, and actually, it's been well over a year now since that lovely little queer bar has taken its love away from us, apparently forever. What seemed like a permanent fixture in the Hood became yet another of its many casualties, giving way to time, chance, and irresistibly trendy, "smart" gay dive bars on the other side of town...
Enter Foggy Notion. As with many new establishments, there is a completely deliberate, calculated feel to the Notion's decor. The effect they are reaching for is sloppy vintage/ Hipster, and indeed, they have a success in their hot little hands, insofar as they attract Hipsters by the bushel here, like maggots to carrion; like the lazy and spoiled to Entitlements; and finally, like Holy Fools to horrible metaphors. LP covers are splashed across the bar, front and center, under the glass, and predictably, you have your Johnny Cash, your Elvis Presley, your Kingston Trio, and your how-quaint-it-is Electric Company, among many other chic, schmaltzy, retro fabulous pop acts. Did I spy Pat Benetar in the mix, I believe I DID! Then there was the (paint by number?) too-precious-for- words painting behind the bar up on the wall, of a white unicorn-- frolicsome and dignified, with a bold rainbow in the backdrop (no sparkles..... I think). I can't swear to it, but do believe this was a signature leftover to remind us of the erstwhile Blue Parrot days. This theory is bolstered by the staining on the wall beneath the painting that could only be human tears....
The patio in back is only partially covered, and pinched as it is, directly abutting neighborhood houses, is sure to draw plentiful complaints about the noise and smoke, et al. The pinball games are retro-fab, but what? No whack-a-mole? One conspicuous area of improvement: the men's room was none too dainty, or to be more direct, the smell could have knocked buzzards off a sh*t house roof. To be fair, there was only employee there on each of my visits, and she was holding down the fort admirably appeasing thirsty paying customers up at the bar.
Notwithstanding the aforementioned Hipster vibe, I warmed up to the place quickly. I liked their menu and their cheap well drinks ($4), their broad range of bottled and tap brews (I like that they're giving fellow n00bs Occidental Brewing some love). The barkeep and fellow patrons sitting at the bar proved to be highly engaging. They have a tasty house salsa accompanying their 5 layer  with some zing, a black bean veggie burger I would actually pay money to have a 2nd, and 3rd time, and so on, some decent cod fish and chips, as were the fish tacos. Several items I'm eager to give a try, including the Buffalo-and-mozzarella balls and especially the Pierogies (tater dumplings w/cheese, sour cream, dijon and kraut and sauteed onions), so there will be more trips in the near future.
Foggy Notion, I gotta confess, I'm a little smitten. You're a little bit of alright! But after having been so horrifically jilted by that little tramp Blue Parrot, I now guard my heart carefully. Like Queen Diva Celine said, somehow, someway, our hearts WILL go on. George's up on Interstate has been around for nearly 75 flippin' years! You're gonna have to put some quality time in, mister (yes, it's a two way street) before we consider that 5th star...
Hold the motherfucking phone.
I have been coming here since it opened as the Foggy Notion...and I am just now getting around to writing a review. Â Un-acceptable...
5 stars, for many reasons...fresh perogies, great and strong fresh juice cocktails, decent fish and chips, a killer tap list, pinball machines (sometimes tournaments too), skee-ball, a jukebox, boardgames, events, karaoke 1 night a week, a killer staff, and the neighborhood crowd.
I like this place a lot, a whole fucking lot.
Pretty rad place to hang out and play some pinball on a cold night or cloudy day. The drinks are stiff and the bartenders are super friendly. I went for the karaoke night and was pleasantly surprised by the number of people (I got to sing a few times). The jukebox has a pretty killer selection and there is ski ball too!
Review Source:Definitely the hippest seeming bar around this part of Lombard. Â I've been here a couple times now for different things. Â It has never been extremely crowded, but I think it is still waiting to be discovered by Portland hipsters. Â
Once I went for a beer, but there turned out to be a show going on... Â Luckily, we didn't have to pay the cover fee, because... Â The show was mildly unbearable... Â The band appeared to only have 2 friends/fans in the audience, and then we were there accidentally. Â Another time I went for karaoke, which was a lot more fun, but the crowd was still pretty tiny... Â For my friend who likes to sing lots of songs, this was a plus, because he didn't have to wait out his turns for too long. Â A third time, I just went in around happy hour and got a beer. Â I imagine it gets pretty crowded for Bent, the queer dance party, and I think I'd like to go check it out some time.
Inside, the place appears to have verything I always want in a bar, including Skeeball! Â Pinball too! Â It seems like a lot of the people who are there are regulars, and I felt a little out of place at first. Â The drinks are averagely priced and the staff has always been friendly.
I come here semi-regularly for the Wednesday night trivia, run by the inestimable Margaret.
This Tuesday night, we came for the pierogi.
After a disappointing pierogi incident at the Polish festival, a friend and I came to the Foggy Notion only to learn the pierogi were in the middle of being made, and were not ready (alas!).
Mel, at this point, called someone (Kevin, maybe?) and asked him to bring some pierogi for us when he was done. Â After we'd worked our way through a serving of fish and chips (flaky fish, crispy breading, not too oily, delicious fries), a batch of fresh, homemade pierogi arrived, and it was as transcendental as any cheese and potato-based pastry could possibly be. Â Also, a regular bought us a round, which was pretty cool.
All of which is to say, Mel and the Foggy Notion are pretty great, and I have no idea why it isn't busier on Tuesday nights. Â I mean, yes, Tuesday, middle of week, whatever, but the Foggy Notion has the best food I've ever had in a bar with a kitchen the size of a coat closet (and better than a number of restaurants in Portland, too).
As for any comments about speed: it's certainly no slower than *any* McMenamins I've ever been too, and it's actually worth the wait, so just know you won't immediately receive your pile of fried whatever (and when you do receive your pile of fried whatever, it will be among the most delicious fried whatever you've had).
Anyhow, thanks, Mel (and Kevin?) for bringing us pierogi on Tuesday. It made our night.
The slight smell of neighborhood dive bar still lingers in the air, the vintage record sleeves settle in the counter under the resin, the pinball machines call, and Melanie is frantically prepping your drinks to perfection. Yes, I'd say this is a good place to be.
The drinks were excellent, the music was spot on, and there's even a patio. I'll be back here again.
Yay I found my new neighborhood spot! I had read good reviews on here and finally dragged a friend in with me to find out great this place was! Their whiskey selection was fantastic and their food menu looked yummy~sadly I had already eaten before I went and I could kick myself for that but lesson learned: try the food next time.
It was karaoke night so there was a small crowd gettin' down. The staff was super friendly, helpful, and fun. I met the owner who was very sweet and had an infectious smile. She even got up and sang with everybody else! She made us feel so welcome and even remembered our names when we left, saying she hoped we'd be back soon. I love that stuff.
I'm loving The Foggy Notion and can't wait to go back!
We were just looking for a place to have an early dinner & get a drink on a Sunday. Looked at reviews & decided to give the foggy notion a chance. They had some interesting choices for food. Stuff i normally wouldn't try. We ended up getting the mozzarella balls & the black bean burger. Pretty darn good. & very filling even though my fiance & i split the meal. Also the beer selection was not like every other bar & restaurant I've been to. I hadn't heard of most off the ones on the list. Cool place to have dinner. Wasn't really busy when we went. We'll probably go back again especially since it's so close
Review Source:I should start by saying I used to frequent the Blue Parrot.
I went there for a show on a Friday night, and was impressed with the crowd that was there just hanging out before the music even started up. Â
Their booze selection is LOVELY and I was thrilled to see they had Pimms...it is rare to see that.
Excellent atmosphere, the bar tenders were nice, skilled, and efficient. Â
I'm impressed. Â The make over has done wonders for the bar.
It is so unassuming from the outside!
I can't get over that impressive booze selection in such a place! It's kinda divey, but in a I-won't-need-a-shower-when-I-leave way. The bar turns music venue on certain evenings, and man, I love it. There are plenty of places to sit, pinball for those who need that in their lives, and a sweet patio.
Seriously, though, the wall of liquor is awesome. I can class up my drink without feeling like I need to dress up. Drinks are cheap, like $11 for a negroni and gin gimlet cheap. The bartenders are super friendly, and have no problem handling a crowd.
So glad this bar is in my 'hood.
Without consideration of bars further west in St. John's, I venture to say this is the best bar on N Lombard. Of course that's a little biased due to the fact I got to see some friend's play loud music late on a Friday night, but I'm sticking to it.
This is yet another bar that, similar to Duckett's on Killingsworth plays two roles and plays them very well. During the day, it's a quiet, neighborhood bar with food and pinball for those who like to play, a patio for smoking and an incredible wall of booze. When a dive bar has St. Germaine, Romana Sambuca, a ton of different craft whiskeys, the ingredients to make a killer negroni and more, I get a bit excited. This isn't another Lombard dive offering solely Ol'Grandad or Maker's Mark if you're feeling a little more adventurous. You can experiment with your mixes here and the bartenders are surprisingly more than happy to do just that. It felt like Teardrop for a moment, only in a dark dive. Mind blowing, in a way.
At night the place turns into a venue. Appears to be a mostly punk crowd but I don't think the shows here are as raw as the ones that play on weekends at Ducketts. That bar (Ducketts) does a great job of disguising itself as just a trusty college hangout until the sun goes down on Friday and Saturday nights. Then it's all roaring Marshall amps, beards, dirty punk dudes and whiskey-a-plenty.
The Foggy Notion is very similar in a lot of ways but definitely surpasses Ducketts in the booze department and willingness to use said booze in more than just a coke or ginger ale 2-part cocktail.
Whenever I'm actually home again, I definitely plan on giving this place some more of my money. They've got a certain allure I can't ignore.
Walked in with my man, ordered food and drinks and grabbed a table. A "handsy" couple sitting in a booth across from us finished their drinks and headed out the exit door. We moved to the open booth and ate our food and drank our beers. 10 minutes passed and the drunk couple showed up again, super angry about us "taking their table". The guy snapped in a bad way even after we tried to apologize and move away. He twice tried to start a physical fight. I told the staff and then owner about the situation and they didn't handle it at all! The owner asked them to leave two separate times, but the drunk guy yelled in her face and stood his ground. Â With zero security, the owner allowed them to stay while the bar continued to serve them. At this point we abandoned our dinners, paid our tab and left. Â On the way home, we stopped at Sundown Pub and ended up having a great time!
Review Source:Why is the best bar on Lombard hiding behind a billboard? I'm all like "HEY I WANT PINBALL, A GOOD JUKEBOX, A KILLER VEGGIE BURGER, A STRONG-ASS DRINK, AND FUCK IT, HOW ABOUT A DISCO BALL AND SOME LASERS" and the Foggy Notion is all like "HEY BUDDY, MY EYES ARE UP HERE".
Visit this bar and if you don't agree that it's got the best jukebox in Portland, I will punch you in the boob through the internets.
One word Pirogi's.
If you like a friendly laid back  neighborhood bar; a place where you are always welcome and has the world's best pirogi, then this is your place. House-made pickled grapes, daily special events, pinball, lottery, beer and specialty cocktails.
I think I could get a sleeping bag and move in here. Did I say friendly and comfortable? Gonna pack my toothbrush right now.
Honey I'm home! Â I like it, I really do. Â This is a bar in my wonderful NoPo St. John's hood that I could easily frequent. Â The owner / bartender was an absolute doll. Â The place is clean, has a nice little menu that is very vegi friendly (no, I'm not vegetarian, but I can appreciate) they have a nice beer selection and for myself, even a good cider to offset the hard stuff. Â
But my favorite part, that I am hesitant to even give away... but keeping them in business wins out over keeping it uncrowded on my new weeknight adventure... Two for One Tattoo Tuesdays. Â Yep, if I'm not at home on Tuesday night, you know where to find me.
PS, I haven't been for music or karaoke, but it is a pin ball haven.
Is fantastic! Â The owner (Mel) is super great and charming, the staff is attentive and make great drinks. Â The food is actually GOOD, which was unexpected. Â And not typical bar food. Â This is one of my current favorite places in Portland and I feel good supporting this place. Â Get this, they are actually NICE to you there. Â They make you feel at home. Â Novel idea, I know.
