    Another one bites the dust

The wife and I been coming here for years, we originally went to the other Gathering place on Van Dyke ( now the Shelby Pub )

we always loved their Pizza, good service, well, today ( Saturday ) is 1/2 off pizza day when you bring in a competitors pizza coupon, I didn't want pizza but the wife did, so I thought she can get her pizza and I would ask for a separate check to use my Entertainment coupon  " for Buy and menu item get a menu item " but when we got their the waitress said they wouldn't do that " why not ? I thought " if I came in by my self and someone else I didn't know came in to get the pizza deal and we sat next to each other then that wouldn't be a problem, I was very disappointed, so I decided to not eat, my wife ordered her pizza, we waited and when the pizza came it was soaked in sauce, like gross soaked and she said the pizza was cold, the wife decided she didn't want it and didn't want to wait for them to make another so we decided to just leave.

with the cold over sauce soaked pizza and the " cant use the coupon " debacle, the wife and I are in search for another Pizza place hang out with out the hang ups.

I try to make all of my out of town guests experience a good GP pizza.  Also, try their fries with the house ranch.

This is definitely a place for families to grab a beer - definitely, a dive bar.  They do not have much on tap, but the pizza special is a winner (pizza, salad, and a pitcher).  At $20, it is more than enough food for 3 people and the pizza is not bad.

I must have gone on a bad day because my experience with their pizza was less than stellar.  The pizza took forever to arrive and they weren't even busy.  Then when it came, the cheese was like plastic on top of the pizza.  It was hardly edible and even though I never send things back, I had to this time.  The server apologized and the manager gave us a coupon for free pizza...not that I wanted more pizza from there.  It's a fine place to hang for a drink or app's, but I wouldn't go for dinner and certainly not the pizza.

I REALLY dig this place.  My wife is always afraid of seeing Aholes she went to HS with (Troy Athens) but to no avail.
Nice little hole in the wall with some really good pizza.  Half off on Saturday, dine in only. (Nice!)
Big TV's for whatever game you want.  Good staff, puts up with my crazy-ass kids with no attitude when I know they should be beaten.
Not a lot on tap but.....there is at least Labatts so I can't complain.
Almost Detroit style pizza but a little bit lighter....we all love it.
The only time I deviated from the pie was a chicken "breast" sandwich that was a pressed breaded nasty patty devoid of quality.   I was actually pissed that the waitress let me order it in the first place.  (as a long time bartender/waiter, you really do need to save people from poor choices once in a while!)
Nice jukebox, cheap/great pizza, cold beer, good staff....what else you want?

The Gathering Place is a good place for a drink and pizza.  It's a local joint with decent food and a relatively quiet environment.  It's a dive, but it's a good dive.  I usually just grab and order of fried ravioli and a drink.  Maybe not at the top of my list, but it's a trusty companion, always there for a drink and a bite to eat.

Our first visit here. It is a shot and beer bar atmosphere and full of locals. The service was great and the staff were all very pleasant.
Unique potato skins: deep fried. But very tasty.
Cheddar cheese balls: Very good, not greasy. Not anything special. Typical.
Burger was HUGE with a bakery style bun. Not greasy. Very good.
Salad was a disappointment. Chopped iceberg covered with sliced mushrooms, grates mozzarella cheese and croutons.  Not even any olives. Lettuce was browned.  Would not order a salad again. I could make that for $2 at home. I don't mind paying for a salad but it better be super fresh and unique.
The pizza others were getting looked great.
The prices were very low, maybe that is why most of the food was typical of a shot and beer bar.  I'd go here again for a quick burger and beer.  But not anything that stood out as a 'great' place to eat.

The Gathering Place is a great little dive bar to get an 8 square Detroit deep dish pizza. I have been going here since I was 10 years old and sadly the pizza has gone from GREAT to simply GOOD. I'm not sure if the cooks have changed their formulaic method to making the pies but the last couple of times I have been there, the pizza sauce was lacking, cheese applied sparingly, and the bottom of the pizza was a bit burnt.

Either way, Gathering Place is definitely a spot to check out. I just hope the cooks start to consistently turn out quality pizzas, as they have in the past.

We live less than a mile from GP and have given them 4 chances and they've blown it each and every time. They've gotten our order wrong, given our pizza to another table (so we had to wait for them to make another one), taken an eternity to get our food out, forgotten things we've asked for, you name it. The food was pretty good and I really wanted to like it but the service is horrible! Maybe we'll try carry out next time...

What can I say? It's the Gathering Place, also known as The GP to anyone who grew up in the Troy area. If you came of age around there, it's where you, um, well gathered, with friends.  It's kind of a dump, dark and dingy, but the waitstaff makes a point of knowing who you are if you come back more than once. And whoa, the pizza! The pizza is fantastic. Deep dish with just the right amount of crunchy edges and gooey soft crust. The sauce is great with a hint of spice and the cheese is always the good greasy kind. I love balancing out the salty goodness with a quick dip in ranch. I also really enjoy the antipasti salad. Good amount of meats and cheese with a good tart dressing.

My husband spent much of his misbegotten youth hanging out here and introduced me to it, along with his friends. The first night anyone arrives from out of town, a text goes out to one and all GP 9PM Be there. We've tried for years to find GP quality pizza in Texas and California with very little success. It's a must go place when we come back. It used to reek of cigarettes as it is truly a neighborhood bar but is much more enjoyable now that Michigan is a no smoking state. There's still an odor of stale ashtray but you really only notice it when you walk in. I suppose you can take kids, but I wouldn't in the evening. It's a bar, not a pizza parlor.

We've been back a time or two for eat-in pizza and takeout sandwiches and we were happy every time--everything was delish and our guests were thrilled. The only meh thing was that their Reuben comes with French dressing instead of Thousand Island which I just can't wrap my brain around but it was still really, really good. (If you were eating in, I'm sure you could ask for Thousand Island, but since we had takeout, I didn't think of it.)

I'm amazed we didn't eat here more often, as it's walking distance from our house and we've never had that before...if we could do it over, we'd certainly eat here A LOT more often.

Great place to go if your with a family or just want a quiet bar to get a drink and some food. They have some of the better pizza out there and if you go to their website usually they have a 50% off coupon.

I've always liked this place - it's an extremely comfortable place to be with great food. The staff is friendly and they make you feel like home. The best part of this place is you never have to worry what you look like, you and your friends can and will have fun here, and the pizza will be awesome.

The next time you're all looking for something to do, just get a small group together - get your butts here - enjoy some games and pizza :o)

Went to The Gathering Place on a Thursday night around 11:45pm, and since it was going to close around 1am, there were only 10-12 patrons there. This is a cozy Troy hangout. When you go at night, it truly feels like hanging out in your best friend from High School's "cool basement" or something. There are a few arcades and games, the carpeting and interior is just all really cozy - like as if you're in a big den. It really is a "Gathering Place" for a lot of Troy locals. I am sure tons of former Troy Athens alumni that are still in the area frequent this place - like how Troy High people go to Joe Kool's a lot.

Being as it was close to midnight - the fryer and grill were shut down. No problem - the oven was all that was needed to try some of their hometown favorite pizza. For $15.99, we got a specialty large square (8 slices) deep dish, Detroit style with a choice of 5-toppings. We chose pepperoni, ham, sausage, green peppers, and onions. While the price was a tad steep, the pizza was baked to perfection and ended up being worth every penny. There was plenty of cheese on the pizza - and the pepperonis were nestled under the cheese and sauce - which was the classic approach (similar to Detroit's famous Buddy's Pizza, home of the original square deep-dish). I liked how the cheese and toppings were not overbaked - and thus tasted a more dairy-creamy. The toppings still tasted meaty - rather than toasty. This was a sign of confidence in using higher quality ingredients, because I feel you need to be using good cheese to be able to underbake it a tad. The cheese and topping were top notch, as was the sauce.

I really recommend the pizza here. Also on Thursday night we got a 60 oz. pitcher for $5.95 (and I was very impressed that Killian's draft was an option too!). At about $22 before tip, enough pizza for 2 hungry adults and enough beer to wash it down on a Thursday night - I was pretty happy. While pizza pricing is a little steep - it is truly great pizza with excellent taste, quality, and presentation. The bar here is very cozy, and our waitress was very nice - a hometown girl-next-door type. Between the good pizza, friendly staff, and cozy basement type interior - I highly recommend this place and it does live up to it's name "The Gathering Place."

I love their pizza. Often when I hit Detroit I will grab a friend or Family member and get some of this yummy pan pizza. This is a bar with a decent pub menu. I have had nothing but the pizza and a few basic appetizers (cheddar balls, fries, ect.) and every thing is at the bar type place standard. You can go their late night or for lunch. Families are welcome earlier in the night as well. They run different specials all the time, so check them out before you go in, because I live in Chicago, I don't keep track. oh yeah big screen TV's with Sports for the men and boys in your life..ohh and you too, if you enjoy sports!

Super cheap beers. At least on a Tuesday we got 12 pints for 19 bucks.

    Also they have longboard. Awesome.

A place for a date? Not really. Surprisingly though, this dark bar often has kids running about due to the smoke-free area and a couple of pinball machines.

This is a great spot for pizza and bar food. The dive bar/homey atmosphere and abundance of big screens makes the perfect chill night out with friends, especially for guys who watch football. My friends and I like to go and play the shuffleboard (think air hockey without air).

I enjoy the BLT pizza and the cheese bread the best! And, agree with Sarah M.B. -- the runny ranch is key. Great daily/monthly pizza and drink specials. Overall, great neighborhood bar.

I can't believe I forgot to 'yelp' about this place when I went...here is your quick and basic rundown:

Total Dive Bar......but with pretty effing good pizza! It's square, and just like Buddy's pizza at half the price and just as good. My side salad was large and was served with that perfect cool, watery ranch that all restaurants should have....and the breadstix!! Soft and large and garlicky-perfect.

Regular typical bar food also available, but I don't see myself getting anything else but pizza here.

Certainly not a place to get a pomegranate gray goose martini, but decent beer selection, cheap wine, but cheap prices.

Now, would I go again? For sure. Is is worth more than a 20 minute drive for folks outside the area??? Not so much. The 4 stars is for the food I had and cheap drinks alone....a dive bar with good pizza is a must once in a while!!

The Gathering Place has great pizza.  It's deep dish style; very chewy and cheesy. I have not tried any other foods here, but they have the usual bar food.

This place is more of a bar/pub; it is a great "gathering place" for softball teams as well as families.  It has a sports theme to it.  The prices are good too, especially if you have a coupon from the local Troy paper.
