Classic takeout style fried seafood joint here. It's the only seafood place where I refuse to call ahead, reason being they have Ms. Pacman and Galaga arcades for a quarter as well as classic Simpsons pinball for 50 cents. So I look forward to the nostalgic entertainment while waiting for my usual jumbo shrimp and fried scallops.
The jumbo shrimp is very good quality, the closest i've found to my fav place Goose Island. And the Scallops are good as well, and reasonably priced at $10 a pound. And also hush puppies, an order of 10 for a $1.25......awesomeness.
So when I wanna get a competitive game of Ms.Pacman on and satisfy my seafood itch, this little gem definitely fits the bill.
I finally decided to try this spot after driving by several times, but I don't think I'll be going back anytime soon. The food is kind of pricey for what you get and the flavor was lacking. I had the catfish nuggets and when I went, they weren't serving certain menu items because of Lent, so that was a hassle. My friend had 1/4lb of fried shrimp and it was just ok. There was a LOT of batter on them and they had no distinct taste, in fact they were very bland.
I really wanted to like this place, as I am a fan of JJ Fish and other establishments that pride themselves on their fried food, but this place just didn't cut it for me. For around $10 spent, my friend and I were both still hungry and left unsatisfied. Perhaps I will give them another shot, but no time soon.
I'm a huge shrimp fan and grew up in New Orleans, so I tried the shrimp from this place. I was eager, but was quickly let down. Don't get me wrong, the shrimp are indeed big but there's also a thick batter covering them. I prefer my shrimp lightly breaded instead of eating so much batter. If that's ok with you, then you'll be happy. I'll continue my search for good shrimp in Chicago.
Review Source:Shrimp.... Shrimp... Shrimp..... WOW... there isn't much more to say but this is the place to go..... Great people.. but even better food.... for this type of food it is all in the batter and let me tell you there isn't a better batter in the state....a small corner place with HUGE taste.. you will go back once you try it.... I drive for over an hour to eat the food here and so will you !!!!!!!!!!
Review Source:i found this place on my way to el burrito amigo. (which has my fave tacos al pastor in town) anyways, i've been on a fried schrimp kick lately and thought i could make some room for some schrimps too.
they were fresh and fleshy little buggers fer sure but i thought the breading was too bready-too thick. i really liked the vinegary/mustardy and strangely orange hot sauce. never had that kind before!
the macaroni salad was great. lots of black pepper.
if i lived in the hood i would likely order from grand ave quite a bit. good people at the counter, good prices and good food. they also have many other fishys/crustaceans on the menu so they may do other kinds more to my liking.
i still think Franks on Addsion is the best i've had.
the search goes on.
I picked up a large order of food here after my dad (who used to fish in Puerto Rico when he was a boy) kept insisting on how good it was.
This place is very good! First off, they have a pretty good selection on the menu. My order included jumbo shrimp, cod, catfish, oysters, potato salad, macaroni salad, coleslaw and fries. After I ordered everything and was waiting around, I wish I would have tried other things like buffalo jumbo shrimp and crab cakes... etc. But I will have to try it next time.
All the sides were awesome! They are individual sized but if you get a bunch of everything, you can share them.
The catfish was a bit salty, but I had never eaten catfish, so I don't know if it's supposed to be like that. The cod was good! The jumbo shrimp I liked and could only eat 3... oof! I didn't try the oysters... Overall, it was great. The shrimp was a bit tough, I guess... but I liked it just fine.
All in all, I split all the food with my mom, dad and roommate. We all were stuffed and there was food left over. All that for $26??? Where else could you have seafood for that price? It's great.
There is diagonal parking right out front. They take cash and credit cards with proper ID. The people were nice. Small place, etc. etc.
Closed on Mondays. I had looked online before and some site said Sundays... Can't believe everything you read :)
Strictly a take-out place, corner of Grand and Long. Â Very informal neighborhood type of place. Â Couldn't eat in if you wanted, because there are no tables, though there is a pin ball machine to play while you wait. Â Not sure how long it's been there, although I can remember a fish/seafood take-out place being here from when I was a kid, but I don't know if its changed hands, how many times its changed hands, etc.
You can order shrimp, various types of fish, scallops or oysters, and even frog legs, everything breaded and deep fried.  I sampled the regular-sized shrimp, smelt, and cod.  All were good, though a few of the shrimp seemed a tad tough.  The smelt  were fine and dandy, and the cod was very good.  They also serve various sides, and you can get soda to drink.  Their house sauce that comes with the orders struck me as a blend of a very vinegary hot sauce and mustard, not much depth to it.  Its not bad seeing as its free, but I'd suggest having a bottle of your own cocktail sauce or tarter sauce on hand.
