Grandad's is one of my favorite spots to hang out when I'm in OKC. The drinks are reasonable and the staff is great.
There was a $5 cover when I there last time and I didn't have any cash. The door man let me go to the bar and use my card to get cash out. When I went back to give him the money, he bought me a beer for being honest. Let's go!!
My only complaint about this place is the noise level. I love live music and the acts that I have seen perform here have been awesome. The problem is that everything is turned up too loud and you end up having to yell to hear anyone around you. Really not a huge problem, but a slight inconvenience.
Overall, Grandad's is a great place to meet up with friends in the OKC metro. Check it out!
On a visit to OKC during Father's day weekend (2013), I had Grandad's Bar on the top of my list to check out given its catchy name. Â From reading the OK Gazette, the owner wanted to have a bar dedicated to his grandfather. Â The bar is simple in nature with old school furniture and decor from the 1950's to 1970's era with twists of modern day technology such as a flat screen plasma and xbox!
Regarding the crowd, I have to report a few Grandad's were in attendance during the 2013 Father's day weekend. Â I guess they were making sure their grand daughters were behaving or perhaps having a brew with their grandsons!
Despite a few Grandad's and Grandma's present in Grandad's Bar, the crowd age was mostly in their mid 20's to late 30's. Â I was also impressed with the male to female ratio as there wasn't too many grandad's, dad's, or dad's to be roaming around. Â
On this particular night a live country music band was performing right in front of the entrance. Â The dance floor was big enough for folks who wanted to two-step while allowing others to pass by. Â Best of all, there was not a cover or line to get in!
The only negative was bar service. Â Ordering three beers and three other types of drinks did take a bit longer than usual; however, the bartender apologized and our repeated orders were expedited. Â The excellent customer service continued as the manager shook our hands as we left and thanked us for coming in! Â Given this experience, I'll definitely visit to Grandad's in the future.
2 visits down. Nifty bar. Not a smokey one. Very crowded on weekends. Not so much on weekdays. Love the lounge chairs and board games for entertainment. It makes me feel like I'm at a coffee shop that serves booze! Writing on the walls in the bathroom. Bring a sharpie if you want to leave your mark.
Saturday is country night, if you're into that sorta thing.
The first time I went it was really great and pleasant. The last four times (spread out over weeks) have been obnoxious, in fact we immediately walked in and right back out. The last time we decided to stay: there was a 5 piece acoustic band playing butt rock songs at a volume level so loud we couldn't hold a conversation across our table. The bartenders, beer and aesthetic are still very charming, but I prefer a bar where you don't have to yell to enjoy a night with your friends.
Review Source:Tl;dr version: Neat place. Would go again.
Just to get this out of the way -yes, there are heaps of 'granddad' photos upon the walls and that's pretty cool. As stated before, bring a framed photo of yer pop-pop and they'll put it up for you.
Their drink menu is very short and concise. They make cocktails but they aren't listed on the menu (mostly beer and shots), and they won't be your traditional ones like say... something like an appletini? I don't know, I'm no expert, maaaan. I ordered cider, tequila shots, and my sister got a White Russian that she really enjoyed.
Weird story:
I really like the Jack and pickle shots. Ya know, when you take a shot of Jack, chase it with pickle juice. Not a lot of places seem to have it, though. I asked about it and the bartender said she wasn't sure if they had pickle juice but she'd check. She came back with some and the shot of Jack and said, "I found a little bit!" which was a little DISCONCERTING. You don't serve food or have pickle juice shots as a regular thing but you FOUND pickle juice? ... I drank it. WHATEVER. DO WHAT I WANT. That little anecdote isn't negative, by the way. It was just strange.
I'm not a fan of their tequila shots. It's an interesting concept -cinnamon instead of salt, orange instead of lime, but it didn't taste right to me. I'm not the biggest fan of cinnamon, and an orange doesn't chase the bite like a lime would. To each their own, though.
They have board games on some shelves. TIP: If you're gonna play games, put them up correctly, you lazy heathens. All mixing up cards and whatnot.
The tab was fairly inexpensive and I had a good time with some friends and my sister. I'd go back when I feel like a relaxed simple alcohol evening again!
What can I say? This is our new favorite bar. A couple of bonuses:
*couple of great tenders of the bar
*nice beer selection
*great live music
*SMOKE.FREE.
*very relaxed atmosphere
*eclectic patrons!
*great location
*the folks running this joint ask your name, and remember you. That's pretty cool.
Loved this bar! It was such a chill place with a very diverse crowd. The majority of the people were in their mid twenties to early thirties. Drinks were soooo cheap!! I went to close my tab and had to do a double take! I was expecting a much higher bill. I liked that they don't keep your credit card when you start a tab. Bartenders were great! They don't focus on one person. I hardly had to wait at the bar before my drink order was taken.
I didn't like the bathroom. It was kinda gross. The walls were made of thin slabs of wood....basically it's your typical dirty bar bathroom.
I appreciated that this place was smoke free. I think we had a better time for that reason. Who wants to be coughing and inhaling second hand smoke the whole night??!
There was a live band but I wasn't impressed. They played too many slow songs and was putting me to sleep.
The neighborhood was a bit sketchy. Some of the stores a couple of blocks over were abandoned and had hobos sleeping at the entrance.
I love Grandad's! It's my new favorite bar!
Some pluses: Good beer, really friendly bar staff, they normally have a food truck parked out front on NW 23rd Street (Heo's Kitchen, Taste of Soul Egg Rolls, Moto Chef), TONS of room to come with a big group, there is a stage and I've seen some good live music (free!) since going there, SMOKE FREE (you can smoke outside), and they have some common board games available.
Negative(kind of): The TV is pretty small, but they do have some comfy couches for watching. I don't really mind that since I usually go to a bar to socialize, anyway.
I was really happy to finally get to check out @GrandadsBar on Saturday night, and it certainly seems like the place to be. What's not to love about a place opened as a tribute to the owner's cool beer-drinking grandfathers?
It's nice and roomy and has big spaces for groups to gather. An area is set up to replicate a living room was being put to good use as a group of fans gathered around to watch the end of a game. Photos throughout the bar pay tribute to the namesakes, and you can add a photo of your own grandpa if you want.
Props for having tons of local beers available, and for pulling in food trucks to the back of the bar. Of course, I'm thankful it is a nonsmoking venue with a good selection of old country, western swing and lots of Cash. I look forward to catching some live music here. Â
Missing one star for (I know I'm getting old when I say this) being a bit loud. I think the size of the space, with limited soft surfaces to absorb some of the noise, just lends itself to be really loud. I wonder what it will sound like with live music. It seems that a lot of the new places are extra loud. Both Saint's and Mule seem super loud, and now GDad's. I'm just an old lady I guess!
I can totally see this being a stop on the 23rd street food and drink circuit for a long time to come.
Even though Grandad's has only been open for 10 days, they've already got the market cornered on customer service in OKC. I went to Grandad's with my mom, dad, uncles, aunt, and fiance on an extremely busy Saturday night. While standing room only and a group of 50 and 60 somethings out past their bedtimes should have been a recipe for disaster, the staff at Grandad's made it extremely enjoyable for all of us - even when my Aunt ordered a drink that wasn't on the menu. Coffee and Bailey's may be standard fare at her house, but it's not something most of us would expect our local honky tonk to have at the ready. The bartender went well out of his way to make sure that she got her coffee cocktail and since we had to wait for them to figure out a way to make some coffee, they didn't even charge us.
Even if we hadn't required special attention, the atmosphere at Grandad's can stand alone. Great music that doesn't overwhelm conversation, solid beer selection, attentive bartenders, fun decor, and plenty of space. I'll definitely be back.
Would you like a coozie with your can of beer? Would you like Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys, Patsy Cline, George Jones and Johnny Cash? Would you like competitively priced beers such as COOP and similarly priced SOCO shots? How about going home not smelling like an ashtray? Yes. Me too. All of it.
This place is the epitome of awesome: the drinks are CHEAP (meaning 5 large, tasty beers and a shot for around only $20!), the music is great, the atmosphere reeks of spectacular, and it is NON-SMOKING! Hooray! The owner, Greg, did a fantastic job with the place. The bar paneling was scrapped from a barn at his family's old dairy farm. The light fixtures were made out of old canisters from the dairy farm. There's basically a living room in the middle of the bar complete with a couch, a couple of seats, a coffee table and a television, but not like a sports bar television; more like a 'family of four sitting in the living room watching a TV series in the 1960s' television. There are pictures of Greg's family, some of them fishing at Medicine Park back in the day and some other really interesting things to look at. It's been a long time coming, 23rd street: you are about to get awesome thanks to Grandad's Bar.
Oh, and my favorite part yet: bring in a framed, mountable picture of your grandad and Greg'll slap that shit on the wall fer ya!
Yep, pretty sure this is my new favorite place.
