Excellent Greek in the far reaches of Bergen County, right near the Rockland County border. Â So far have only tried the Gyro and chicken lemon soup, but both were first rate. Â Gyro in particular excellently spiced, very authentic tasting meat (and I have been to Greece, where they often serve Gyros with fries inside, fortunately that custom hasn't crossed the Atlantic--soggy fries in a sandwich are not my idea of a sublime taste experience). Â Portions are generous, and though the tzatziki sauce is good as well, could have used a bit more--didn't bother asking so they might have complied if I did. Â
Prices a bit higher than NYC but worth it. Â Decor nothing special, and parking lot is tight with sharp turns, but these are minor flaws--the most important element, the food, is primo!
Maybe it's because my friend and I are Asian and look out of place but the waitress sure did treat us like we were out of place. While we were looking over the menu, I asked the waitress a couple questions regarding the food and she was terribly rude with one word blunt answers. We ordered the pork gyro & a greek salad. I pretty much hated the gyro... everything was dripping and falling apart, and the pork was super tough. The greek salad was just neither good or bad. I didn't really appreciate the salad if that makes sense. The waitress was very absent, and the times I asked her for something "please", or said a "thank you", she had no response. Tried to take our plates when we were still working on it. Dropped off the check with not a "Thank you" but a "Here". I ALWAYS try tip well to severs because I have been a server myself and know just how crazy hectic it can get, but I can self-righteously admit that this waitress got a skimpy tip for some skimpy service.
Review Source:This place is great if you know what's worth ordering. Â The main thing to get at this place is the Gyro, its probably the best in the area. Â Avoid anything "souvlaki" as this might as well translate into tough and dry. Â The place is pretty packed most days so take out is really your best option.
Review Source:This is by far the best casual Greek food within 2 hours! Cant beat the value. We have tried many Greek places in the area, maybe them all. This is a tiny and unassuming place, but totally amazing. They always seem to have fresh veggies year round. Everything is delicions. Make sure to try the Baklava!
Review Source:Food: Fantastic.
Service: HORRIBLE.
The waitress here is HORRIBLE. (And there really is only ONE.) I went here one time, had her, she was HORRIBLE. Gave it a second try, had her, HORRIBLE again. Then had her a third time, and I just had to give up.
Okay, so then do take-out, right? Sounds like a plan. Except the guy gives attitude when taking orders.
They know they can get away with not being a warm and inviting establishment because their food is good. I'd give it 5 stars, but good service goes a long way with me.
Went here recently and they raised prices. Â It's no longer the great bargain it used to be, but it's still a decent deal. Â Avoid the combo meat (2 or more meats) platters. Â You're paying $3-4 more just so you can have two different kind of meat, for the same total portion that would get with a regular platter.
Gyro souvlaki platter with greek salad is still my favorite here. Â No refills on soft drinks anymore. Â Food is still great, but not as much of a value as it used to be, so 4 stars instead of 5.
Revisited...
Had the Souvlaki platter third time I went....
They kindly rush you.
The meat (beef, pork, & chicken) was bland and tough.
Not enough meat, and too much rice.
Rice was good.
I would not get the Souvlaki platter again.
It's over priced.
Now for the rest of the food....
I had The Gyro the first time I went.....
Meat so tender I thought it was sushi.
Homemade pita, fresh veggie, the sauce....
Tomatoes are so red, it looks like it's been dipped in red paint.
It's just that much better than anywhere else.
The second time, I placed an order for a seafood salad without looking at the menu. Â So when I found out I had to pay $21 for lunch I was not a happy camper.....
Until I opened the container.
It's big enough for two people.
I would pay $21 again.
I was in a nearby town on business. Â A few coworkers and I decided to go out for dinner. Â We picked up some wine on the way. Â We had to wait about 15 minutes to get a table on a Monday night. Â
We started with the stuffed grape leaves, which were superb, the fried zucchini, and we split a large Greek salad. Â I had a lamb dish over orzo which was wonderful. Â We all enjoyed our meals. Â What a great find. Â I can see why folks were streaming in and and out for takeout.
Amazing Greek food! Â I lived in Northvale when I was a kid, and I recall this place opening around the time I moved away, which was almost 15 years ago. Â While many restaurants on Livingston street have come and gone, The Greek Village still stands. And there is a very good reason for that!
The "small" salad portions are enormous! The leftovers from my Greek salad with grilled calamari were enough for a full second portion. The grilled chicken and veggie platter lasted me 3 days! And the tzatziki sauce is amazing!!
Small parking lot and not much of an atmosphere, but I come for the food, not to stare at the walls.
Greek Village is BYOB. Â It's a great place for lunch, as it is less crowded during the day.
I love this place. Â Its a nice small family owned restaurant. Â Whenever I'm in the area I always have to stop by and order a gyro. Every time I call they are always so polite on the phone and their pick up service is quick and easy. Â Its definitely a place I'd recommend to all my friends and family.
Review Source:Casual Greek restaurant with very yummy food and super reasonable. Â Understated decor and simple Greek menu make this place a hit. Â Not the most amazing Greek food I've ever had but everything was very fresh and homemade goodness. Â It was a wonderful treat and if I'm ever in the area again I'll surely stop by. Â The waitstaff was also friendly and helpful.
Review Source:The rage seems to be Mediterranean fare in New Jersey at the moment. That being said, there's a bunch of places that you can order Greek food without going to this place and waiting, standing frozen (from the draft even though a new door has been installed) at the entranceway and paying way TOO much for average Greek street food. As another Greek restaurant owner told me this guy is diner Greek and not authentic-upscale, which is what I look for. Â
Pita and Hummus always a good choice and portion sizes are good if you stick with the regular stuff. Â Stay away from specials. Â If I wanted a whole fish the size of a sardine, I would have opened a can at home. Â For 23.00, a real rip off. Â I'd rather sit at a place with some sort of ambiance if I'm gonna get into NYC prices. Â
Love the fact that the only waiter is an ole Greek fella, but it would be nice if he had some ouzo before he starts his shift - maybe that would get him to crack a smile. Â
Overall, a great place to grab a bite as we did on a recent night. Â Other than that, try the Greek City Grill in the Kohls Shopping Plaza up in Ramsey.
Stopped here last night on our way to meet our wedding photog in Nyack, NY. We came based on all the great reviews and we weren't let down! It was clean, friendly, and food all looked great. The octopus we ordered was a bit overdone and chewy and not very flavorful but the Greek salad was great as was the lamb stew over orzo. Only 2 out of the 6 or 7 lamb chunks were a bit overdry, the rest were tender melt in your mouth yummy! Wish I was nearby so I could come back again!
Review Source:I love the food here! You can see that it is always fresh and they are pretty authentic for this area. I would have given them 5 stars which they deserve for their food, BUT the one and only waiter that is always there is verrry cranky and somewhat rude ! I was there this past wed after the lunch crowd , my 2 yr. Old started having a tantrum it lasted 3 minutes max. He crouched down and told her to stop crying cause she was "making people sick" and he was not joking or did he crack a smile.. I was fuming and the owner a lady that's always behind counter witnessed it and didn't seem fazed. I am in the rest business and I would never allow an employee to speak to a customer let alone a child in that manner!
Review Source:Working in the area, I decided to make it my personal goal to eat at all the restaurants around here. Seeing that my company would always order Chinese take-out or Italian Panini's or fast food, I was looking for a change.
Having driven past The Greek Village I always told myself to work up an appetite before ordering food here since I love me a side of Hummus (all day, every day)!
I placed an order over the phone, and my food was ready for pick-up within 20 mins! They were ready with everything in a little baggy and hot sauce on the side, just they way I like it. I picked up all the food, tipped on take-out even though you're not supposed to.
It was one surprise after the next. The food was delish, and the portions were huge (it's no wonder their prices went up so much from the menu I found on http://urbanspoon.com).
Being a vegetarian, there was quite a selection, but I decided to grab myself: Kolokithakia (fried zucchini served with a side of mashed potatoes w/garlic sauce), Hummus & Pita, and a Falafel Souvlaki (which was made with softer falafel balls of zucchini). I was not a huge fan of the falafel, but the hot sauce def helped!
My colleague got a Pastichio (traditional lasagna style meat dish) which he thoroughly enjoyed as well.
All-in-all, I would definitely re-order from here, but in much smaller quantities since we had enough to feed a family between the 2 of us!
I live in NYC and to be honest, I can't find Greek food that measures up to Greek Village. Â Their grilled chicken Greek salad is hands down the best I've had and I've been to Greece (haha). Â Also, their taziki sauce and fried zucchini chips are so out of this world yumminess.
The only negative to this place (if you can even call it a negative) is that it is always so crowded and difficult to get a table. Â You are probably better off just ordering your food and picking it up.
The seafood over salad is delicious. Â The octopus, squid and shrimp are all grilled to perfection and very fresh. Â The salad is also very fresh with a side of tzaziki and balsamic and olive oil dressing. Â The portions in the place is huge. Â Good for sharing with a friend if you cannot decide the one thing you want since everything here looks delicious.
There is parking available but the inside of the restaurant is small and have limited seating. Â If you want a seat quick do not go in a large group. Â The place seems to always be packed when I go. Â Definitely a good place to eat in this area!
I come here from time to time. I usually have the Horiatiki Salad with Chicken. I love their fresh, full of taste tomatoes and fresh onions and other vegetables they put in, and the seasoning is always great.
Today someone in the next table was having a Gyro Wrap, and I was too hungry to resist. So I took the salad as a side dish and also got the wrap, with some French fries. It was everything I was hoping for! And it only cost $14.39!
Definitely a great choice for lunch
Hands down the best gyro in NJ. I've tried the bifetca and other meats here. Don't bother. The gyro platter is my go to from now on. I've seen their fries and I can not comment on it. I also gave up eating Fried potatoes so I won't touch it.
Parking is limited
They accept credit card :)
And for you Alckies, Please get your food TO GO. It's BYOB. I've seen older couples bring 2 bottles of wine and dine as I wait over 30 mins with my GF for a table. I am gonna bring a 12 pack of Coors to spite all you next you oldies!
This place is AMAZING. It's right in my town, and I didn't know about it until a year ago. I came here on a father-daughter date with my dad on a complete whim, and we were both wowed by the food here. Greek Village is actually the place that started my family's love affair for Mediterranean food.
Even on weeknights this place is jam-packed, and the people working the register are always bustling around everywhere trying to keep up with all the orders.
I usually go with my mom and my sister, and we split 1 appetizer, 1 entree, and a salad with grilled seafood between the 3 of us.
The salad is a staple - we ALWAYS get it. Crisp romaine with tomatoes, olives, feta, onion, dolmas, olive oil and lemon juice, topped with a heaping pile of fresh-off-the-grill shrimp, squid, and octopus. It really doesn't get any better than this.
Their pitas are AMAZING - always warmed and toasted on the grill right before serving, and since every entree comes with tzaziki sauce, the pitas are the perfect vehicle for carrying that refreshing, cucumber yogurt sauce into your mouth.
Based on the great reviews on yelp, we decided to try the Greek Village. Â My boyfriend has had Greek food many times whereas I never had (other than a Greek salad) so I thought it would be interesting to see if we would both like the place.
The place is relatively small with an even smaller parking lot. Â We thought it looked promising that on a Tuesday evening at 7 pm the lot was already jam-packed with almost all tables filled. We had to find street parking but luckily got a table once we walked back to the restaurant.
Service was relatively quick. Â Food came out within 15 minutes of placing our orders. Â The waiter didn't come back around our table until we were finished, but I kind of liked that. Â It allowed us to leisurely enjoy our food without feeling like we were being hustled out the door. Â We ordered the Greek fries, chicken souvlaki in pita, and beef souvlaki in pita. Â
The souvlaki in pita was accompanied by tomato, lettuce and tzatziki. Â I had the beef and I loved it. Â The pita tasted so good. Â My only thing was that there seemed an excess amount of tzatziki that it was sort of dripping out of the pita but it tasted good. Â My bf mentioned that he thought it seemed less rich than the American version you get from the gyro stands in NYC, but that was good with me since I don't like extra creamy sauces anyway. Â The fries were steak fry-sized which were fried perfectly - crispy on the outside with soft potato goodness inside. Â Yum! Â The only thing is that they put rosemary on it. Â I personally don't like rosemary but the ketchup covered the taste sufficiently for me to enjoy them.
Overall, as a Greek food newbie, I am sold! Â My bf liked it as well and thought it was one of the better Greek establishments he has ever patronized. Â We will go again!
There is no question, as pretty much all the other reviews state, this is a phenomenal place. The food is truly fresh and well prepared, not over greasy or filling.
Arriving for an early dinner at 6:00 pm there were already 3 groups in front of us waiting for a coveted spot at one of the restaurants 8 tables. The clean but no frills atmosphere which obviously boasts the restaurants high take-out popularity along with the eat in does not prepare you for the food your about to eat. The parties in front of us moved quickly and we were soon seated.
The sole poor waitress of the place was responsible for all 8 tables in the place which is simply too many tables for one waitress to have without being rather short (not mean but not pleasant either) and hard to get her to notice you when you need something.
We started out with a wrapped grape leaf appetizer which was very good. I had the seafood sautéed in a creamy red sauce. The squid, octopus, scallops and shrimp all tasted fresh and were in a delicious sauce. There were pieces of fresh basil mixed in which really made the dish great. The person I was with had the grilled seafood platter which also tasted very fresh and was surprisingly not greasy and full of flavor.
Great place, great food, they need to hire a second waitress but once they do that they will be five stars for sure.
Situated in the most unassuming location, this tiny restaurant will truly take you by surprise. Â I cannot sing enough praises of this place! Â The food is cheap, fast, and delicious. Â Â Â
I love The Greek Village because you can completely gorge yourself on food and not feel regretful afterward! Â You still feel like you ate well because the food is so fresh. Â
My sister and I always get the hummus and pita, beef gyro platter with Greek salad, and the Greek fries - steak fries with oregano and lemon juice. Â SO good.
Â
The food always comes out quickly so even if there is a wait to sit (which there usually is), you never have to wait for long. Â And of course the menu has much more to offer than what I always so faithfully (or dully) order!
Absolutely the best Greek food I have ever had. Family owned and they go above & beyond to make sure you are satisfied.
The best is its BYOB. I can't not say enough about the quality of the food and its priced right. Small restaurant but worth the wait.
Best greek salad & hummus plus combo platters if want to try the different grilled meats.
Parking can be tight.
This is one of the best Greek Restaurants around. It is not a big place or a fancy place but the food is great. It is located next to my office so I go with co-workers often. It is a local favorite.
It is cute with about 10 tables and long line for take out so we always call ahead.
The food is always good no matter what we order. I am greek and I know good Greek food when I taste it.
Best Greek Food in the World!!!! : ) Â I love love love this place - cannot say enough great things about it. Â Just thinking about it makes my mouth water and I want to run right over there to get some delicious food!! Â Probably one of my top 3 favorite restaurants ever, if not #1.
Phenomenal greek salad, we usually order with extra feta. Â I love the hummus too - its much thinner than hummus you'd get in the store, but I think that makes it more delicious. Â Big fan of the grape leaves, spanakopita, greek fries and gyros too. Â Actually, we've never had anything on the menu that we don't like! Â Everything is fresh fresh fresh!
And the staff!!! Â We get a wonderful "welcome back" greeting and strike up conversation every time we go in.
Food is cheap and DELICIOUS (seriously, you guys should charge more since its soooo good!) Â Only caveat -- love the new tables guys, but when are you getting a bigger place!?!? : )
This is the best Greek place in the area. Â Forget It's Greek To Me.
I've never eaten in here, but I do takeout every two weeks. Â From what I've heard, the service is great. Â BYOB.
Family own and run (aw! Â they are such sweethearts!), the food is authentic, fresh, and delicious. Â The gyros are amazing. Â Pair them with lemon-oregano fries for a filling meal. Â The appetizers are great too, especially the chick pea dip, the eggplant dip, and the garlic-potato dip. Â And you must try the tzatziki!
The entrees are the high point. Â The moussaka is tasty but sometimes they skimp on the bechamel :(. Â Try the lamb chunks over orzo with tomato sauce. Â They spice the orzo with a little cinnamon or something. Â It's delicious.
GO ON A FRIDAY. Â On fridays they serve an artichoke and fillo pie. Â It is AMAZING. Â I recommend refrigerating it and eating it cold--even tastier!
A huge gyro will run you about $7, but entrees are in the $12-16 range. Â Everything is very filling.
The parking lot is a bit hard to navigate, so park on the street if you can.
My coworker was raving about this Greek Restaurant in some NJ town that I have never heard of. Â While it might be on the road less traveled for most, it is worth the trip. Â Fortunately, this place is only 20 minutes away from home and from work!
The service is friendly and courteous. Â At first, my coworkers and I wanted to bring the food back to the office, but we changed our minds after we ordered. Â We told them we wanted to stay and eat instead and they said no problem. Â They cleared up a table for us right away.
The chicken souvlaki platter was tops and the Greek fries is a must order. Â The gyros are humongous, as it makes you think, "how am I going to eat this, my mouth only opens so wide!"
I've been back a few more times since and the place gets pretty busy at night as well, so be prepared to wait during dinner hours.
Update: 10/31/2009
I came here for one of my last meals before moving to Chicago. I will truly miss this place. This time around, my friend and I got the saganaki (who knew broiled cheese with lemon juice could be so delicious?), the grilled calamari salad (generous portions), mousaka, and a soulvaki platter. We couldn't finish it all so we had to bring some of the deliciousness home.
