I LOVE Hakone. It's my favorite in the area for quick, take-out sushi. Cheap, fast, and good quality.
Key word for me with Hakone is take-out. This place isn't a place you really want to hang out for a long-term meal. They have a bar set up inside and a few tables outside but it's really, really small. It kind of reminds me more of a food stand than a sit-down sushi place.
But anyway, the sushi itself is pretty fresh and delicious. It's not the best sushi you're ever gonna have but it's pretty damn good. Rice is fresh, fish is fresh, everything made to order. Â
I would stay pretty basic here though, I don't know if I would opt for anything that seems too complicated. I could be wrong though. But I think I ordered like a fried tuna something roll one time and I wasn't a big fan. Avocado roll, California roll, and rainbow roll all the way. Rings in at about $15 total. You can stay pretty cheap here. Do it!
Ordered a baked scallop roll, got a tuna roll with pan fried bay shrimp on top. Like the kind of shrimp you buy in the grocery store. It was just a cold tuna roll with some warm scrimps on top. Ridiculous.
Also ordered the "go-go roll". They put just straight imitation krab in it, big chunks, again like what you buy at the grocery store.
Really really bad quality. I basically just paid $20 for $5 worth of sushi. The sushi at Ralph's supermarket is better quality and better priced. Will never ever go back.
This place only has 7 seats. Very nice owners, very nice sushi chef. Â I would definitely come back. They write everything on the menu and really mean it. Â They didn't try to say that they had "albacore" but served seared albacore only. Â They wrote on the menu "seared albacore" which is rare for japanese places because they always try to pass on seared as raw. Â I ordered two rolls which was plenty of food for myself.
Review Source:I was here for dinner recently, and while it was efficient and quick, I can't say I'd go back. I ordered a tiger roll, which was a shrimp tempura and spicy tuna roll with masago and eel sauce - many of my favorite things.
I was unpleasantly surprised to hear the "ding" of a toaster oven, which was evidently used to reheat the shrimp tempura to a slightly warm, slightly crunchy texture. The roll looked very nice, but the shrimp lacked any flavor. The spicy tuna was ok, though.
I think there are many better places around here to waste my money at.
Sadly dinner plans were cancelled but I didn't really feel like venturing out so I was left to Main street for my dining options.
UPdating to 3 1/2 stars for now serving large and small Asahi beer. Seating has also improved to bar type seating and a couple tables.
I had a large Asahi, seaweed salad and the Paradise roll that comes in a reverse sushi roll white rice on the outside, sushi and seaweed on the inside tuna, salmon and snapper.
Still good quality for a quick bite in a small pop up shop style space. I've learned that I personally enjoy a more traditional style sushi restaurant where you can see the fresh fish on display and the chef preparing your food at the sushi bar and interactive chefs making suggestions of what to try.
This was a good sushi place for a great price, we got 2 drinks 3 rolls and a teriyaki chicken and beef bowl and it was 30 bucks!!! It was good and you definitely need to try the las vegas roll!!!! The only downside about it is it was tiny only 2 tables and inside and 1 outside but other than really good sushi and fresh!!!
Review Source:Too say the place is small would be an understatement, but it is small. Â 8 seats inside around 3 small tables, a few more outside. Â I was out with the family on the Island and we wanted a place to eat. Â The ratings were good on Yelp, but they must have been from folks who don't eat a lot of sushi, or just have lowered expectations because of the location.
Nothing was bad, the rating after all is "Meh. I've experienced better." but the rolls were very ordinary, with too much rice and not enough fish. Â The sashimi was cold, which I guess makes it a bit safer for a place without a lot of turn-over, but it made for an odd experience.
The owner was very nice, and the prices were reasonable. Â I hate giving bad reviews to nice people, but the sushi really was just so-so.
We couldn't figure out where to eat. Hubby found Wilma's which seemed ok by the locals but then, we saw Hakone.
Oh, how cute and under-rated! Oh, I convinced hubby to eat sushi. We had the Sushi Box. It was HUGE and reasonably priced. i also ordered 2 pieces of hamachi, YUMMY and fresh And OMG delish!
We had teh terryaki chicken, rice, salmon piece, and california rolls with tea. Quite tasty. It is on the corner and is very small but everyone is so nice and it is all Japanese and all fresh! Go here, you will be glad you did instead of say...Wilma's cause this place is really super good. (of course, if you want basic food, go to Wilma's!) I just love Sushi and was glad to go here!
Ohh how I miss this place! I used to live in Dana Point and my girlfreind and I loved to drive up the coast and walk around Balboa Island. Hakone is always a must stop for us as we walk around, it's just so small and inviting. 3 tables is all you got, it's basically just you, the chef and the waiter so services is always great. And I have to agree with the other reviews on here, the rolls are incredibly cheap compared to other Sushi places in the area. I can promise you that when I find myself back in the area I will once again find my way out to balboa and Hakone... till then I hope everyone else gets a chance to stop by and enjoy one of my favorite places to go!
Review Source:Small, quick, good and cheap.
It has 3 tables that fit 2 people each. This place is open air and more like a nice food stand. Â
The rolls are CHEAP. Â I couldn't believe it. Â The good news is that they don't just have sushi. Â They have udon, soba, yaki soba, katsu, etc. Â
We had:
California Roll
Mexican Roll
Tuna Roll
Edamame
Miso Soup
They were all good and we got out of there for only $17. Â No kidding.
Don't half step. Â There are precious few places to eat on Balboa Island and this is one you should check out.
