It's easy to forget all about Hale Hawaii when you think of Tiki in Los Angeles. That's mainly due to the fact that Hale's is more often then not closed.
They subscribe to a really strange set of hours. It's open weeknights from 4 till... well, whenever the hell they want to close up. It's like the other side of town version of Tiki Ti. Especially considering that both establishments are owner operated and so they can legally smoke inside.
How this law came about, I have no clue. But still, it does make it so that the bar has that ash tray smell just stuck on to everything. In that sense, it's a pretty decent bar. The decor is where I like it.
While some of the place not directly at the bar feels like it's just not as flowing as others, it still does carry out that Polynesian style fairly well. It's also in a strip mall. Which you would think is odd for a bar to be in, but it's one of the last remaining examples of the strip mall tiki bar. This is as deeply rooted into tiki culture as anything else.
They do make a pretty mean Mai Tai. And if you're up for the task, they do offer a really kick you in the balls Scorpion bowl. Though you have to remember that you're going to be consuming this drink in front of a lot of beer chugging football fans.
It's a nice change from what you're used to in a tiki bar. Especially the newer ones that just opened. This one is far more of a dive than you would have hoped to see. It's got the pro's and cons to it. I can't hate. It's just one of those more forgotten Tiki spots in Los Angeles and deserves some loving.
I like this cool laid back Dive Tiki bar (thank you Tony M). Â The Mai Tais here rock too.
The owner is a cool, mellow older guy and he does seem to run it for his own enjoyment. Â It is owner-operated (like Tiki-Ti) and it also allows smoking, just like Tiki-Ti does. Â The cool part is that it's in Torrance near me, no drive to Silverlake needed. Â They also have a great Scorpion bowl. Â He doesn't have a full menu of Tiki drinks like Tiki Ti or Don the Beachcomber (I asked) but the two he does make are great. Â There is also bottled beer and other cocktails. Â Bring your cash. Â He has snacks and things for sale like chips or nuts, but there is no food menu here. Â Locals and regulars- a few younger people, a few older people, no hipsters that I've seen. Â Right near Torrance airport on PCH in an unassuming strip mall. Â Will come back and have!
