I only go there when some buddies are already there.  I wouldn't ever try the food, doesn't feel like a sanitary place to cook.  Why the police haven't shut this place down yet I just don't know.  No way in hell a percentage of the crowd in there was over 19.  The music was awful, no one was dancing, everyone is just hanging out or playing beer pong and the dj has Nelly blasting so loud you can't talk to the person next to you.  Seriously, Big Tymers, Nelly, and the Fresh Prince.... LOL

I guess if you're looking to take an incredibly drunk underage girl home this is the place to go.

A group of us walked in on a Wednesday afternoon around 530 to an empty bar.  The bartender was very friendly and quickly served us.  The food was just so-so but extremely economical as they had a 25 cent wing special during Bruins games.  Shortly after arrival a neighborhood lush managed to create quite a spectacle and fall off his stool loudly cursing at the ground and his spilled beer.  This appears to be more of a late night drinking bar more than anything else.  On a side note, we were offered highly discounted Gillette Fusion razors that likely fell of the back of a truck in Southie from a random character who appeared out of nowhere.

This is your classic Quincy Center bar... If you went to high school, middle school, or elementary school in the south shore you will know or at least semi-recognize 75% of the people in this place. It gets crowded, is sometimes full of trashy people, and fight occasionally happen... this is where everyone ends up going.

I've seen what many of the reviewers have mentioned - the drunk post teens throwing up, the badly tatooed, and non-existant dance floor... not always the best scene but most bars are like this on weekends.

If you come on a quiet night the bar staff is attentive and friendly. James, one of the bartenders, goes out of his way to be pleasant to every person at the bar and he knows a lot about cocktails.

Do you like hanging out with a bunch of barely 21 yr olds, screaming to be heard by your friends, and bathrooms clogged with drunk post-teens who have either just thrown up or are having their hair held back while gagging over a toilet?  Enjoy watching badly tattooed, zero style or class morons jump around a non-existent dance floor while stomping on your feet?  Then this is your place on weekend nights!  It's awful.

However...  It's actually a decent place to get a drink and meet friends other nights.  Bartenders are cool, good beer selection and cocktails are strong.  But I wouldn't come near this place on a weekend night.

The place is GREAT with a capital G. The place has the worlds finest beer Miller Lite and has a real Irish feel to it with leg less drunks and fights breaking out all over the place. Gotta love an old school Irish bar not like the sissy joints in Boston.

This place, along with Clash of the Ash, needs to stop accepting the immature teenagers with terrible fake IDs in. They're so obnoxious and obviously aren't mature enough for the bar scene yelling and screaming for no apparent reason. Last time I checked, bars are for adults, 21+ not for 17 and 18 year olds. If you guys only make money off of these kids then apparently your business is crap. Someone needs to be the adult here. If this hasn't already been reported, I'll be the first to do so.

I stopped in here on a Thursday night with some friends. Good atmosphere plenty of parking out back. Be careful where you park it's in the heart of Quincy Center and parking police are in full force. Found out the hard way. Seemed to be a good crowd that night. College hang out joint. Plenty of nicely dressed women. Staff was respectful as well at the patrons. Friendly bunch of people. Beers were decent price. $4.25-$5. I didn't check out the food but I reckon it wouldn't be that bad. I would recommend the place. Definitely go back. I think I will take a star off for not getting the parking out front proper with the signage. The sign was exactly perpendicular with the driver. So when I got out of the car and I looked real quick I only saw the thin side of the sign...which means I didn't see it at all. Man talk about being pissed off.

the place is a dive. ripped seats and smelly restrooms. the food was horrific, and when we asked for more butter packets, the owner came back and threw a very large box of it onto our table and says: *take what you need*. really right now? This box was huge, and there it sat on our table. we were shocked. NEVER AGAIN! rude, Rude, RUDE!

I don't know what to make of this place. Sometimes I like it, other times not so much. I guess its just a safe go to bar if your doing a bit of a pub crawl just to stop in for a few.

Nothing really special about it, just cheap beer and mehhhh food. I went once on a Saturday night and it was what I expected, extremely crowded and tons of knuckleheads. But I guess all the bars around that area are like that on the weekends... townies. Best just to come when its quiet during the week unless you want the frat party vibe they have going on the weekends.

With that said its pretty cheap and the bartenders are friendly. Definitely worth checking out if your rolling through downtown Quincy.

Do not order the food. Save your Money!
We used to go there a lot, but the management to this place has totally tanked the place. They got rid of all of the good staff like Dennis (they said he was too old and hired some girl that liked to flaunt her top half unfortunately).
Dirt on the walls so thick it is like someone took mud and smeared it on the walls.
    Dirty floors.
    Seats are all ripped up.
Total bar rescue and new owner needed here.
We tell people to AVOID this place now. Before we used to meet people here.
It is a younger crowd going for a meat market piss up.
There are always those little annoying black flies in the place that swarm you if you have food or drink in there. I would hate to see the Kitchen.
Shephards pie is anything but. It was like Alpo with freeze dried mashed potato product. I'd rather eat an MRE. It was so disgusting. I will never go here again.
Also bathroom door on 1st floor is tricky. It has a lock, but if someone gets the door knob right they can pop the lock and catch you with your pants down for all the pub to see.....literally.

    As common as it gets.

I forgot to add...there are tiny black flies everywhere. Happy swatting!

Great after work bar. Love that the have Bar Pong on Wed. nights. Usually a fun crowd on the weekends. Definitely a bar to check out in your 20's and 30's

I don't HATE it here, but would probably only go if I was meeting up with friends who are here already. The bartenders have never said hello or smiled. I don't even need both of those things in tandem, but one of the two would be nice. It just can't hurt, guys. The crowd here is pretty obnoxious, too. I just don't get the appeal, other than the cheap drinks. There are plenty of other Irish pubs in the area I'd rather be.

    Mixed feelings here.

I used to love the Half Door, they used to have friendly Irish guy bartenders and live music and a pretty relaxed scene.

In the past couple of years it's changed. Now there's girls bartending in their underwear and the scene is very young and fratty. There are still things to love: they play great music on the weekend, drinks are well-made, I'and the doormen, while strict, are usually pretty nice. Things that I don't love so much: It's LOUD, there's nowhere to dance despite dance music, they should move all the tables and the barstools at night because sometimes it's impossible to get to the bar when it's crowded.

Half Door is what it is, it's your scene or it's not. I stay away most Friday/Saturday late nights but weeknights are fine.

I wasn't actually here for very long because half of our group ditched us to go to another bar and we lost them for good.  It was a nice little dive that I would have rather started the night in.  I love dive bars and this had a great atmosphere.  The music was good and not too loud so we could all still talk to each other over our beers.
We actually left The Stadium down the street to go to The Half Door because it was getting obnoxious in there with the music being deafening and the service getting non-existant.  Glad we did.

I would definitely go back.  I liked the vibe I got there even if I was only there for one Guinness.

Good Dive Bar. DIVE BAR. Cheap Beer. Better than waiting at the Fours for 20 minutes if you just want a beer. Quesadillas are good. Pizza is good, not bar pie. Kitchen likes to run out of stuff and isnt open late. Oh and there are bathrooms downstairs people. Trivia night Tuesdays is always fun. Hit or Miss it on the weekend if your looking for busy place to meet people. Dead in the summers except Tuesdays.

The Half Door is a tiny little place that has very very loud music.  It's got some cozy booths and a DJ going on, but it's very small.  They play your typical top 40s music and it's just pretty standard for your average dive bar.  Not bad, not amazing.  But the music is pretty damn loud so don't go here on a Sat night expecting to talk to anybody.  There's not much dance space but you can still have a good old time.

The Half Door in Quincy reminds what I see when I close my eyes and picture the inside of the Devil's toilet. Despite the obvious visual clues to the contrary, I ate here once and the result was something akin to when the Alien exploded from the guy's stomach in that Alien movie, only with more gas. Also, In a feeble and half-thought out attempt to class up this classless joint, the powers that run the Half Door have decided to disallow the wearing of hats, so you can expect to be greeted by the flattened, matted, hat heads of  the already disheveled clientele of this establishment and the bouncers patrolling amongst these pour souls enforcing this "No Hat" policy like the gestapo. The best compliment I can give this place is that it's somewhere for the functional alcoholic to go before going out if one wants to get an adequate buzz on without being spotted by your friends.

No hats policy?  It was entertaining to watch the bouncers flomp around the crowd and ask people to take their hats off like they were children sneaking gum in class.  I guess they want to "class" up Quincy.  There's a lot more aesthetics of this little place that should be handled before executing an obnoxious "no hats" policy.

This is the type of bar that I come to first to load up on cheap drinks...and then go some place better...

I still love this place.  Jen still rocks the place with awesome service and the food while nothing fancy still is great for the price, big yummy steak fries.  Tonight I tried their buffalo chicken sandwich and it was spicy as hell and tasty.

    For reals don't hate =)

This place was nothing special. We went later on a Saturday night (10ish) and the place was pretty dead. If you're looking for a nightlife scene this isn't the place to go. We decided to go here because the reviews said that it can be pretty busy, but there were less than 20 people there when we came in. They had already stopped serving food and the waitress was only waiting on one table.

There was a lot of space and plenty of seating, but the way everything was laid out was really weird. Most of the booths were sectioned off and kind of private. The open table area wasn't anywhere near the dj and dancing area.

Also, there was this creepy "regular" guy sitting at the center table all by himself with at least four finished drinks on his table. Of course he chose my friend and I of all people there to bother. We were trying to ignore him because he was clearly intoxicated and saying rude things about women. There were other guys at the bar and the bouncer that saw him bothering us, and no one came over to ask him to leave. Instead, the waitress brought him two more drinks! When he started telling us about how he was a streaker we left the bar. We mentioned to the bouncer that the guy had probably had enough, but they didn't kick him out until almost 30 minutes later when he stumbled into the next bar we went to.

The only reason I gave this place 2 stars is that the drinks are pretty affordable. We paid $9 for two sam summers, and they had all kinds of deals listed too. I just wish I had a chance to taste the food, because it seemed affordable too.

This is a review of a brief stop to the back patio.

A bottom shelf draft and a well drink cost way too much.  Other establishments charge far less and seem to be thriving.  I couldn't figure out what math arrived at the $ 10.50 for these 2 low end drinks.

The patio is  cheap azz stamped concrete, which simulates more expensive stone pavers.  This illusion does not have the desired effect when it is dissolving into rubble.

The awnings and surrounds that define the outside seating area are shabby, and do little to obscure the site of several nearby dumpsters.

They just do not have it going on here.  That is too bad, because The Fours is too high end, and the patio at Bad Abbots is sort of a joke, so the opening is ther for a fairly-priced, decent-looking out door drinking establishment facing the large Quincy Center parking lot.

This place is O.K. but that is really about all. I have been there tons of times, busy and dead. What I don't like are the bar tenders, there is just never any excitement or even a smile. They have trivia on Tuesdays and I used to go there every week but eventually I just couldn't stand being in there for more than an hour. The decor is awesome and thats the only reason I am giving it 3 stars, it's being in a giant tree fort. The food is bar food, nothing fancy, mostly friend stuff, but it will do the job if your hungry. One more thing - if it's busy enter from the back :)

There are some mixed reviews so here's mine:

Late on a Friday night they have the "bar scene" with lots of people, pretty similar to most other bars.

If you go on a Friday night (5pm -7pm) expect to sit ANYWHERE you want and you're probably sharing a waitress with one or two other tables. This translates into some amazing service for a $6 sandwich and fries.

For the price it's hard to beat the quality of the food, my personal favorite is the Chicken Curry and Fries.

This is a fun place!  There is usually a DJ or a band, no cover charge, the drink prices are reasonable, and the service is good!  Fun place to go with a group of friends.  It's also a fantastic place to have a party!  I've had two there (my 40th birthday party and our holiday party) and my sister had her college graduation party there.  Each time they did a great job of making sure everything was wonderful!

There is nothing about this place to set it apart from any other dive. They serve food but I've never tried it, nothing I've seen coming out of the kitchen has interested me. Actually, I am intrigued by the fact that people actually order lobsters here? This is not a place i would feel good about ordering shellfish.

Drinks are cheap and ordinary. They have various entertainment on different nights and mostly it's bad. I like the interior, it's kind of hobbity, but i hate going down into the sketchy basement to use the bathroom. The TV situation isn't great, so it's not an ideal place to watch a game.

Honestly there isn't much reason to come here at all, but I still do sometimes when I can't think of anyplace else to go or i want one cheap beer on the way home from someplace else.

I'm back in town for a while and ended up here after visiting a pub with a closed kitchen (boo!)  I was glad to see that they added booths which made things more comfortable. Our crowd of 8 supplied the bartender with the only vistors of the evening - but the kitchen was open, he was attentive and I was impressed with the updated menu (since I was there last) and the specials. So, an upgrade to a solid 3 stars.

I go to the half door on tuesdays for stump trivia.  The food is mediocre and the service can be slow because there are only 2 people working there.
It gets crowded on the weekends but I wouldn't say its a social crowd... most people show up in groups and keep to their own.  Its never my first choice of places to go in Quincy.

We always go here on the weekends for drinks (sometimes food) with a big group.  We always have the same waitress, Jill...she's quick w/ the rounds! kind of loud in there but the music isn't bad.  Gets crowded so get there early for a booth or a table in the back :) Food is decent, what you'd expect from an Irish pub.  One of the better bars in Quincy.

My friends insist on going  here all the time.

The only good thing about this bar is that you run into people you haven't seen in years.

Other then that it get's way to crowded on the weekends. and the music is so loud you can't even talk to each other.

Bartenders can be crabby and sometimes the drinks aren't very strong.

But I still always end up having a good time.

Went there last night on my mini tour of places to check out in Quincy.  Can't say i was impressed.  The place has a funky (not in a good way) layout and it seemed like I was in a high school reunion or something.  People just weren't frendly at all!

Not planning on going there anytime soon...

    Hand battered chicken fingers--MmmmMMMMMmmm, tasty!
I was contemplating whether to get to get the side of french fries...But I knew my eyes were bigger than my mouth since I know I would only be capable of consuming a "my-sized" handful or so of the little grease sticks.
When they came out, a few minutes later the lovely little waitress brought over a mini-sized plate of french fries...Very considerate (she apparently heard my contemplation of feather or not to order them.)
I need add that the bar is not well suited size-wise for this pub. And I cannot knock the service too much as there where only about 4 people running the wait staff between the indoor seating, bar, and also patio seating...But seeing as it is "Thirsty Thursday" they might want to consider a larger number of staff members on Thursday evenings...

Want to go on a pub crawl?  Quincy Center is a good place to do it... you can almost literally walk out of one pub and into the next one next door.

Almost all Irish Pubs (including this one, even if it occasionally has an identity crisis).

Nothing is really overpriced, but then, how can it be when there is so much competition?

This place does not stand out as a favorite... but it should certainly be a stop on the tour.

The bar set up is a bit strange but all and all they have a good crowd for the weekends and for games. The food is decent. I would say the best thing I had there was called the blackjack burger which was a cajun burger and only a little spicy.

I got it confused with the Holy Ground, which closed.

I agree it is very loud and wierdly shaped but seems to fill up quickly. It is a good place to get a quick drink.

In the summer, there is a patio.

Mixed feelings. I've been there plenty of times over the years- and a few times recently for trivia. The place is akwardly shaped- so it gets packed fairly quickly. And maybe I'm old, but it's freaking LOUD- even on weeknights. That being said, I've never had a problem with any of the service there. *Shrugs* But the size and the volume are both a bit much for me.

My roommate lives at the Half Door, which is wonderful because it means less time I have to put up with his janky ass.  For that alone, I love the place and want to have it enshrined in some sort of Hall of Fame.

Regardless, I've found the bar service to be quite good and the crowd pretty cool, other than my roommate of course.  They have some good beers on tap I enjoy stopping in for a drink every now and then.

A fun crowded weekend spot is the best way to describe the Half Door.  I am bit biased cause my friend is a bartender there, but I really have always had fun there.  The food is decent pub fare, although the kitchen does close early :(  The outdoor patio is great fun in the summer and people watching is supreme.  Its right next to the Fours, so if ya wanna bar hop, no problem!

This Irish Pub is one of many in Quincy Center. People stop in for a drink and a meal after work to watch the Sox game on the big screen TV over the bar.

Service can be quite spotty with the waitstaff seemingly disappearing for long stretches. The typical pub fair is good and passes muster if that is what you are looking for.

On my recent visit, on a Thursday evening, the place was pretty dead, yet it seemed that we had to wait forever to even catch sight of the server or bartender.  We all enjoyed our meals, but would've prefered if the waitstaff were more attentive and there to replenish our drink orders.

Very mixed feelings on the Half Door. My first experience here was trying it for dinner, where we were left to wonder exactly what kind of atmosphere they were trying to create. Picture it: Walk into the bar, and techno music is playing, sports are on the TV. Sit down at a table made out of a barrel, and are greeted by a waitress wearing fine-dining restaurant black & whites. We're given their traditional Irish menu, where we choose two entrees that turn out to be spectacular- one was a sandwich, one was their Shepherd's Pie. Very impressed by the food, but very confused by the conflicting themes. Are you an Irish bar? A sports bar? A techno dance club? A fine dining establishment? My next time there was for drinks, and there was no confusion. No one was having dinner, it was just a ton of people drinking, watching the Sox, and having fun. The only food there was a free buffet. Personally, I think that this scene matched the atmosphere better. So if you're looking for a casual, inexpensive but good dinner, go here early before the crowds start coming in. Any later, eat elsewhere and stop by here for a beer afterwards!
