Was herer a couple fo weeks ago and stoped in for lunch arond 1230pm. You could tell it was the lunch time crowd, but at this location the crowd was not that large. At least let me say the line moved extremely quick.
You order with a kind of lunch line proccess and repeat your order and pay at the register. The guys behind the counter were courteous and fast with your order and they even procces your payment quick no matter how you pay (cash or card). Since they package your food (mine was called the Mermaid) in a paper bag with all the salt, pepper in the bag. All you need to do is grab it and be on your way or you can take a seat at the many tables that are in the resturant
Came here on a whim since I pass by it almost everyday to get to my train line. Decided to get an egg & cheese on croissant for breakfast. I was the only person in there (it's usually pretty slow and empty in the AM), but they have a variety of other breakfast items if you're interested in pastries, sweets, or oatmeal. The guy behind the counter was friendly and fast putting together the sandwich. And although the eggs may have been the "fake" kind and was definitely pre-prepared, they were still soft and the cheddar they put on it was the real kind. Not the sliced American cheese you find or "cheddar" you find in supermarkets, it tasted sharp and had wonderful flavor. For $2.99 not bad! It was cut in half and was a great, albeit calorically heavy breakfast.
Review Source:This place does me right. Been here a million times. Need a quick lunch sandwich. All kinds, this is the place. You can get half sandwiches if you're looking to pinch pennies. Several of the guys are more than happy to answer questions about the sandwiches, so just ask. They'll make it however you want.
Review Source:Our second day in the city, wanted to find a place to get a quick lunch before my hockey game. Just stopped into this place, not knowing anything about it. The food was okay. The prices were a little high. The sandwich was a good size. I had the #8, Al's Special. It was large, but it was only okay.
Review Source:I am so super happy this place came into existence! They serve my one of my favorite corned beef from Manny's deli. This place is far more convenient than Manny's since I am on this corner all the time and it's about 10 steps from the L. The soup is a nice compliment to any sandwich - you can even as for samples. The corned beef sandwich comes in a smaller 6 ox size; perfect for those who dont need gastronomic proportions.
Review Source:Mediocre food with no flavor at cheap prices. Bleck!
Went here for breakfast one day and I may as well have eaten cardboard to fill me up. Â Perhaps the only redeeming qualities to this deli is their conveinant location along State Street and next to the Chicago Theatre. Â
If you went great food with tons of flavor still at cheap prices. Try across the street at Potbelly's. I would have gone there but they are closed for breakfast on weekends. Â
If you eat here I'll try not to say, "I told you so."
I was in a hurry with a colleague so we stopped in for a quick lunch - figuring sandwiches were a safe bet, and both of us being from out of town and not wanting breakfast at 11:00. Â I got the "lean" pastrami and it was anything but. Â They put the small amount of greasy meat in the microwave, slapped some spicy mustard on rye and there it was. Â Maybe I'm spoiled from NYC Pastrami Sandwiches - but this one was one pitiful. Â He got a turkey sandwich and was equally unimpressed. Â We both agreed that this was the worst lunch we'd had in quite some time. Â
This place may be in business because it's a pretty convenient location for many - but it's not for the food. Â Extremely disappointed.
I first tasted Halsted Street's Coffee when they handed out free samples while I was commutting to work. Â The coffee was good.
Now  I occassionally stop in for their coffee.  State St. is the only location I've visited since it's right off the Redline Lake stop which I take. Â
Usually service is slower but not too slow. Â
One day I got annoyed because I paid for my coffee and the cashier put my change in the tip jar w/o asking. Â Granted it was only coins, and I found a dollar's worth of change in my office drawer from the previous desk inhibitant, but damn. Â I found that kinda rude. Â
I'll chalk it all up to a.m. coffee rush craziness.
I've been in this place a few times now (I work right around the corner, so it's an easy and convenient choice) and it's been meh each time. Â I order everything with NO TOMATOES. Â Tomatoes and I... Â we don't get along. Â Â Anyway, several times now when I've ordered something to go and by the time they play telephone with my order behind the "you can't watch us prepare your food" wall of advertising, it's been messed up somehow each time. Â One time SWIMMING in tomatoes, ("no" became "extra" somehow) and the other time they were just all over my sandwich ("no" got omitted somehow). Â Â
The roast beef lunch special was particularly good, but beware on to-go orders. Â I've not had the best of luck. Â At least if you're eating there you can take it back if it's wrong.
I understand restaurants have their recipes and standard order of ingredients, but NO TOM is a standard request. Â Get it right, folks or I go to places that do get my requests right.
I always come in here for a quick bite. Â Gourmet? No way? Â Hearty and satisfying? Â Definitely. Â I recently had the pastrami which was alright, but my favorite here is the corned beef sandwich with spicy mustard. Â And they aren't kidding when they say spicy! I sit there with my eyes watering and wheezing from the horseradishy spiciness, but I just ease the pain by taking another delicious bite. Â It's also fun to come in on weekends because you might see a cast member of whatever show is playing at the Chicago Theatre (right next door), still in makeup, popping in between shows.
I can't wait for it to get warmer because then I can make even more frequent visits to Halsted St. so I can get a rainbow cone. Â I know all the flavors together sounds like a big mess, but you really should try it once, the mix of flavors is just right. Â It wouldn't have lasted this long if there wasn't something magical about the combination.
In short, a great place for a quick lunch and save room for dessert!
I've been sick *waaaaaah* and it's effin cold outside! The broccoli and cheese soup is like the giant warm hug I needed during lunch on a weekday while I looked like death. Mmmmmm, chunks of brocolli... I'm not a huge fan of sandwiches in general so I don't go for that here but I really like their brocolli and cheese soup. I'm also pretty fond of their chicen noodle soup as well. Perfect place for a quick lunch bite. Mmmmmm imaginary hugs. I need to try this rainbow cone others speak of when it is warmer. Like heaven? We'll see about that. Hmmmmph!
Review Source:Two experiences:
Experience #1 - I popped in for lunch and ordered the chicken salad sandwich and a chocolate shake. Â The chicken salad was bland (Have you heard of celery salt? Â Pepper? Â Something?) and the cocolate shake was average. Â How can you mess up a chocolate shake?!
Experience #2 - I was in need of a cup of coffee on Marathon Sunday and everything else in the near area was closed. Â The line was super long with people ordering food and no seperate or extra area to order a simple cup o' joe. Â I walked out.
I'm with everyone else....this place was only okay.
When we came, I was STARVING and CRANKY. You didnt want to see me like that. But by noon, thats how I am when I havent eaten lunch yet.
We ordered an egg salad sandwich and a pastrami sandwich. Â Both sandwiches were good but not outstanding. Plus, if it was only good to me when I was STARVING, maybe it really wasnt that good?
There are two lines to the restaurant on opposite sides of the restaurant. Â One seemed to be longer than the other. But just a heads up to those that havent been here, you can go to either line. Service is fast. There is a lot of seating here but when its busy, there are no seats and its survival of the fittest after that. Good luck!
On a sunny Monday afternoon, I was looking for a sandwich place that would satisfy my desire for slamming food. I found just the place at the Halsted Street Deli. I got the Tarragon chicken sandwich wrap with a cup of chili. Unreal. I can't wait to check this place out at least 5 more times this week. The prices were decent and there is enough variety on the menu to keep me satisfied. Boom!
Review Source:Do not eat here unless it is the only option, which probably won't ever happen since you are on State St.
Go directly across the street to Wow Bao which is fresh, and never microwaved anything. (Or even Jimmy John's is way better)
Summary -
The sandwiches are overpriced, mediocre, and nothing special. The veggie sandwich had one silly piece of avocado and one piece of red pepper. They use regular sliced bread, regular lunch meat, and don't actually cook anything.
The soups are NOT homemade (I asked) and the one time I got the chili, it had weird meat chunks that were like processed meatballs.
The breakfast wrap was the most disgusting thing I've ever purchased - I watched them microwave the egg, grey mystery meat sausage patty and tortilla all together. It was nasty. I'd rather have a Dunkin egg sandwich.
If you've ever been to a real deli, particularly in NYC, you know this is a far cry from the real thing. Having shredded lettuce a deli it does not make.
This place is better than the average deli/sandwich shop, and there are 3 vegetarian options on the menu (usually vegs get just 1 option at other places). Â My boyfriend ate the egg salad, which came with tomato and lettuce (he added swiss cheese). Â The egg salad was a bit bland, but it was passable. Â I ate the BMT- basil, mozzarella, tomato, and roasted red peppers with a vinaigrette served on tomato foccacia. Â This sandwich was really good, and I was impressed that Halsted's had this creative veggie option on its menu. Â The flavors were bold, nice and savory. Â As for sides, my boyfriend ate the potato salad and I ate the pasta salad. Â The potato was awful, so skip that. Â The pasta salad was better and it had some good flavor.
Review Source:I stopped in here for lunch the other day wanting to try something new. And... eh, it was just okay.
I felt kind of rushed by the counter guys, and I couldn't figure out why because there was no one in line behind me. Give a girl a second to look at the menu, will ya?
The sandwich was good, but nothing earth shattering. The bread was tasty but very crumbly which made it messy to eat. The sandwiches are big, and I ended up giving the other half to a coworker. So if you're someone who likes to eat out and stretch it into two meals, this is the place for you.
Prices are a little on the high side, in my opinion. I wasn't expecting to drop $8 for a so-so sandwich, but I guess that's lunch in the loop for you...
I grabbed my order to go, but they seemed to have a lot of seating available, which seems to be a rarity in the loop at lunch time.
To sum it up - good, but nothing special. Not really worth the high prices.
BEST PLACE EVER because they sell rainbow cone! It's not enough that I'm being punished having to go to work every day (AND in the loop) - but the original rainbow cone is so far away... it's like the heavens opened up and shined on me the day rainbow cone came to Halsted Street Deli. :)
Review Source:I stopped in on a super cold, freezing-rain Saturday. I had the breakfast sandwich , ham, egg, and  cheese. The sandwich was meatalicious, there was no skimping there. The eggs were nice and fluffy granted they are all purpose, but tasty nevertheless...combined with a golden delicious croissant, so belly-filling on a cold, windy Saturday morning! Yum, Yum!
Review Source:I think that this place is good, not anything exciting, but just good.
Let me just get what I don't like out of the way: The prices. Almost $8 for a tuna sandwich and a bag of chips. Really? I can go to Macy's and get better food for $1 more. The tuna sandwich is literally one slice of American cheese and a ton of tuna on flimsy bread. Nothing else.
Ok, so why the 3 stars? I like the pace of this place. When I need to get a sandwich quick, I can come here and be in and out the door in no time. For those days when I don't get to really take a lunch, I come here so that I can at least get a little extra time to eat. In addition, their catering is good. It came on time and was exactly what I asked for.
So all in all, yes, it is what it is...a downtown deli. No frills with an up-charge to cover the rent. But its efficient and fast. So when I need a quick bite, I will keep coming here although I think that I'm going to look for a different sandwich so I don't feel ripped off.
Headed over for lunch around noon, it was very crowded, but the lines always move fast here. Its a deli that specializes in hot dishes, a different special every day...
I really enjoy the beef and had it again. It is HUGE, so large in fact that I really should eat only 1/2 of it...but somehow I power it all down.
Really friendly service, worth a visit!!

At first I was not a fan of Halsted Street Deli, but because it's so close to my work I gave it a couple more tries. Â I have grown to like it a lot, especially because their sandwiches are so big, that I can save the other half for later. Â Their bread is delicious. Â I really like the Tom Turkey. Â I do not however recommend their wraps. Â Get it on wheat bread instead. Â I like the chicken salad on wheat. Â I also don't enjoy their breakfast so much, it's not all that, especially when you can go across the street to Potbelly for a yes, greasier, but better tasting breakfast sandwhich.
The other great thing about the place is that the restaurant also houses Rainbow Ice Cream! Â It's a separate business and cashier.
My fiance works right around the corner to this fine deli, and since I go to Depaul it is right up the street. I have had their Italian and their Tripledecker Turkey Bacon sammy and I have to say that they are fantastic. You don't leave hungry from this place. They have soups and salads and other items on the menu, but I believe the sandwiches are their crowning achievement. My fiance usually gets the salads or the chicken tarragon wrap (yumm). My parents have been going to the original one since they were growing up on the southside of Chicago. I added an extra star because this location also sells Rainbow cone, that delectable frozen treat with god knows what in it. All I know is that it's damn tasty. Do not leave this place without a Rainbow cone if you have never had one!!
Review Source:Nice shop but they are stingy on the condiments. I got a pastrami sandwhich and I got the meat (I wanted the meat) but I didn't get the lettus, tomato, onion or was even offered cheese.
This is unacceptable, in my opinion, for an $8 sandwhich. I know I'm downtown Chicago and not in New York but man they could have put the works on this over priced lack of a meal!
I will return when I feel as though they've added value to their offerings and you should do the same.
Lunch in the loop gets boring real fast. Corner bakery? Bla. Another wreck from potbellies? yawn. Thank god for Halsted Street Deli. Ever since this location opened I have been avoiding the usual chains and coming here for lunch. Granted, HSD is a chain too but until another location opens around State street I can pretend its not.
They have a huge menu. I mean where else can you get a hot dog and fries, lobster bisque, a giant (Manny's) pastrami sandwich, or fresh squeezed orange juice all in one place? My all time favorite has got to be their BLT. At only 4.99 it is very reasonable and leaves enough in my daily lunch budget to spring for one of their brownies.
FInally, they have service down to a science. Whereas Potbellies always gets bottlenecked at the toaster, Halsted seems to be able to toast in 5 seconds and move the line quickly.
Trying to get to an evening class at Harold Washington with only 35 minutes between work and class and trying to get some food can be a major pain in the pita. Â This place helps me out a bit. Â Very clean, very new and many menu choices (especially if you eat meat). Â I've had veggie sandwiches both times. Â The first one I had, the BMT (which is funny because I work at a BMT. Â I digress.) was good in theory, but I thought lacking somewhat in taste. Â Also, the bread seemed oddly not baked all the way through. Â The Baja was better tasting and loaded with veggies.
I will be back again. Â It's across the street from HWC and quite convenient. Â Can't go wrong with that.
3.5 stars. Â 1/2 sammy, cup of soup and fountain drink for $7.50. Â yes please!
Al's Special - Manny's corned beef on rye w/dijon mustard. LOVE. softest rye bread i've ever tasted and the beef/mustard combo was just perfect for a chilly day.
Cheese Chicken Enchilada Soup - wonderful. Â period.
Rainbow Cone ice cream - Palmer House and Pistachio. Â YUMS! Â and they give you so much...for $3, i was completely full off my small cup.
Service: Â very friendly and SO quick!
This will def be a new regular lunch spot for me. Â 2 thumbs up!!
I'd say this place is solid. Â I had an italian beef sandwich with cheese, hot peppers and red sauce. Â If I got it again I wouldn't get the sauce...not because it wasn't good....just because it's not my italian beef style. Â The place was clean, service was quick and they were really into customer service which was a nice change for the loop. Â When I go back I'm getting a Rainbow Cone.
Review Source:Yay! A sandwich place across the street from a sandwich place! However, they are two very different sandwich places.
I've been here plenty of times and waited until I tried a few different items to review.
Salads-good but not the best. However, I'm a super picky salad eater.
Turkey Sandwich-i won't get this again. way too much turkey. it was like 3 parts turkey for 1 part bread. i took a bunch of it off. waaaaste.
The Baja-calling all vegetarians! this is a sandwich you are going to want to eat! wheat bread with some mayo piled high with various vegetables and some cheese. SUPER filling and so filled with flavor any meat eater won't be missing it.
The staff are really friendly and they whip out those sandwiches like nobody's business! There are also various breakfast items, bagels, muffins, etc, if you'd prefer.
I was excited that  new lunch spot opened close to the office. I had the tarragon chicken wrap and it was lacking serious flavor. The only thing that stood out the most was the lettuce... all I could taste was lettuce.
The set up in this location is very efficient. There are two sides of the deli counter so they can crank out the orders. I was in and out in seriously one minute! The staff are very happy and friendly and that is uncommon these days.
I will go back and try some soup and another sandwich. I know HSD can do better than the tarragon chicken wrap!
This place is great!!! Staff IS friendly and the manager is usually around helping out with the lunch rush.
The soups are DELICIOUS but minus one star for not having a daily menu or at least a Twitter account so it's easier to know what soups are on instead of calling or just showing up (they have something like 10 varieties!).
If you want bread with your soup, just ask! The mini Italian loaf is absolutely an amazing creation of tasty carbs.
There are TONS of tables and seating is usually easy to find plus you can people watch at the window-side counters.
Enjoy!!!
Nice deli, good sandwiches, healthy portions, good quality, and decent prices. This is the kind of deli you feel good about supporting. The staff was friendly and thanked us for coming and the owner even came over to our table and asked how everything was. They also have rainbow cones, although I didn't try one, that's pretty cool.
My only dissapointent  was how un-eco friendly the presentation was.  Your food, even if you order to eat there, comes in a styrofoam container, with a LOT of paper napkins, and plastic utensils, all in a paper bag.  It just seemed a little silly.  I know this doesn't make up for that, but the day I was there they were walking around free samples of mini hot dogs with cheese. I am a sucker for free samples!
Pretty accessible location with great options for sandwiches, salads, hot dogs, and some soups and chili. I had their hot dog special: 2 hot dogs with chips and a drink. It hit the spot, but nothing special about it other than the fact that you had two hot dogs instead of one.
I'll update this when I get to try the sandwiches.
They share their location with The Original Rainbow Cone.
