I've been coming here since I was a small child and love this place. It's a tradition in our family to get our wedding cakes here and they are by far the most delicious I have ever had (both the chocolate filled with raspberry and vanilla filled with pineapple are to die for). The decor is very eccentric and it always seems to be hard to find a table right away but it's worth the wait. Their curry wurst is my favorite meal on the menu and a must try. This restaurant offers a memorable experience each time and will not disappoint!

Great little German coffee house.  All of their food is great.  I love their bread and potato salad.  One of the few places that has curry wurst .  Their pastries should not be missed.

What could be more heavely than a German Chocolate Cake make in house? One made by someone who knows what they're doing!

I love this little german bakery. Everything seems to have a different name to it and tastes like it's from the country itself. Very thankful they were able to help me hand pick out an assortment of pasteries to put together for a party I was attending that evening. They even replaced some of the more fresh items with ones that they picked. Very sweet and thoughtful staff!

Clusterfuck. A word I learned from my father at a young age. Usually it was used negatively, but here I am going to use it in a positive light. The Heidelberg Haus is a clusterfuck - but not just any clusterfuck - a clusterfuck of all that is Bavaria that I want to lose myself in. From tasty mustards and expired Oktoberfest shirts to German CDs and Cuckoo clocks - it's all under one roof.

    ---------------------------------love at first sight-------------------------------------------

I was sitting in a tiny apartment in Lugano, Switzerland the day I found Heidelberg Haus. I was on a mission from God to find Wiesswurst (white sausage pronounced vees-vurst) in Indianapolis, so that when I returned home in 3 months my fix would be right there waiting for me. Enter Heidelberg. The answer to my savory German prayers. Not only did they answer super-promptly to my email, but were very helpful in telling me the different ways in which I could purchase the sausage at their restaurant.
Once I returned and made my visit to Heidelberg, I was also able to purchase zesty mustard and German sweets to accompany my links.

So good!!!  We stopped by and purchased a variety of treats.  The cakes are the BEST!  As we were leaving, the owner even gave my daughter a package of cookies!  So sweet.  We will definitely be lifetime patrons of Heidelberg Haus.

Wow, what an eclectic collection of german goods in a place that has been around for years. If you have made a trip to Germany and missed picking up a souvenir you may find an authentic item here. They also have a loyal group of breakfast and lunch crowd for great German cuisine however it may be a battle to find a place to sit. It has a great vibe and if your in at the right time you get to say hello to JJ or as the staff seems to call him Papa.

Note their hours. They close at 7pm on weekdays, and 5pm on weekends.

The older reviews are pretty much still right on.  Tchotchke heaven.  Lots of imported German and Austrian "stuff", food, desserts, refrigerated food.  Also lots of local (or in house) made desserts and breads, along with bread from commercial German bakeries elsewhere in the Midwest.

There are a few tables to sit down and eat, cafe style, along with stools at a counter.

The food menu is pretty simple, sausages, German hot dogs (bratwurst, knockwurst, etc).  Only one menu item, a pork chop,  is not some kind sausage.  But the main draw is the desserts and breads and candies.  German potato salad is a must-have side dish.

This is a store in addition to a cafe/restaurant.  Lots of pre-packaged food and knick-knacks.  Lots of touristy stuff, as if you were in Germany or Austria.

The layout is kind of complicated, you can almost get lost.   It's also very cluttered and very "busy" with stuff on shelves from floor to ceiling.  It's easy to get claustrophobic here.  You could spend at least two hours browsing to see what all they have.

If you're a European pastry or dessert freak, this is a MUST try on this part of town. Actually, since it's the only German cafe/bakery in town, I think it's a "must visit" no matter what part of town you live.  Worth the drive.

Service was attentive and friendly from two youngish cheery and upbeat ladies who enjoy their jobs here.

Great place for a quiet lunch of Knockwurst, German potato salad topped with some of the most delicious desserts you ever seen.

    Different and fun. Tchotchke heaven.

The place kinda has a combo of faint sauerkraut-- stale coffee-- old books smell to it...

Their dessert/pastry case is what I go for. shortlist of my favorite sugar hits around the city:

Donuts-- Longs, Donut Shop, or Hart.
Danish or angel cake or ganache cake--Taylor's
    Bars-- Circle City Sweets
Cookies-- Sunshine Bakery or Henry's Coffee Bistro
    Muffins- Henry's or Rene's
    Croissants-- Rene's
    Scones- Fresh Market
Pies- Locally Grown Gardens.  but well, it's almost like if you were born in Indiana you know how to make your own or you know someone who makes a fantastic one
    Cakes & strudel-- Heidelberg.

Cheesecake or their black forest cake are the best.  I think they even supply a couple big restaurants in town with their black forest cake. Very friendly owner/baker will customize any kind of cake for you-- tell him what you want, he'll make it. Just give him 24 hrs. heck, he'll even combine a german choc cake with banana cake w/ bavarian cream btwn the layers and ice it all together if you so desire.

Their cheesecake is unique in that it is like light fluffy cake layers alternated with light fluffy cheese. So it's not so heavy dense like traditional NY style.  And the fruit (lemon, pineapple, peach, apricot, cherry, etc)-- is layered inside too, not just piled on top.

they also have rye bread, poundcake, plum strudel, poppyseed bars, etc etc etc....

As others have mentioned, they also have a little cafe section. They get their meats n sausages from Claus's in Fountain Sq.  Smallish grocery section with imported dry goods, jams, pickles, condiments, chocolate, etc.  Geman videos, tour guidebooks, magazines, funny bumper stickers and magnets, steins n mugs, crochet doilies, coasters, figurines, all kinds of RANDOM STUFF.  All piled and jammed on top of and next to each other.

It's just a fun little escape into a funny charming little hidden gem of an old world shop randomly plopped on the side of the city. it's not but 1/4 mile of the Pendleton Pike exit off I-465 so not a terrible detour if you have even 15 min to be curious-- though once in the door you'll likely find yourself so entertained you may well need 30 min :)  They do close pretty early though (7pm?).

This place is pretty much a one stop shop for all of your German needs. Say you need a Hummel, a tube of imported German Mustard, a CD of German Pop Music, and a bratwurst with kraut this is the place for you. They have enough visual stimuli in this place to cause a mild Epileptic seizure but don't let that distract you from thoroughly exploring this place.

For your first stop I would recommend sitting at the bar and ordering a coffee and a piece of their mouthwatering cake. All of their baked goods are made fresh on site and are of top quality. My personal favorite it the black forest cake. It is a layer cake with homemade whipped icing on the top. On top of the bottom layer is a cherry sauce made with real tart cherries and some sort of liquor and is what really takes this cake to a different level. For any fan of sweet things this is a must try.

If you are looking for an affordable place to have an authentic German meal take a seat. They have a limited menu but anything I have had here has been great.

Outside of the food realm they have a small gorecery section and a thorough collection of German.......Stuff I guess. There is no way to describe this section and impart the craziness of it.  Just go and see for yourself.

German food is not my top choice or this place would be a 5 star joint for sure. Still I'm grateful for having this establishment in Indianapolis.

I don't frequent Indianapolis, but will check this place out again when I return.  The restaurant/store/bakery layout is truly a trip.  Average, cheap German food, served by either young girls who are attempting to look authentic, or older ladies who are the real deal (when I called to find out the typical entree prices, the lady didn't even understand me, she was so German).  I ordered the weisswurst, mostly because the last time I had one was in Munich.  It was tasty, especially with the special sweet mustard that was recommended as more authentic.  Whatever.  It was good.  The store itself is awesome if you are looking for German paraphernalia and basic German grocery items.  The bakery items looked tasty and fresh, although I didn't actually try any.  The staff was super-friendly, and I was asked about 6 times by 6 different girls if I needed help or wanted anything from the bakery case.  Impressive: collection of steins.  Unimpressive: no actual beer sold to fill those steins.  WHAT?  a german restaurant/store that doesn't sell beer???

    Shop of kitsh.

Was hoping to get a sweet, but nothing looked too fresh, after several walks up and down the cases, decided to pass and go somewhere else.  Lots of tschotskies, fun place to take people.

I cannot believe no one has gotten to this yet!

I think every high school German student has taken a trip to Heidelberg Haus (more commonly known, I'd say, as Cafe Heidelberg) at one point or another. This is Central Headquarters for all things Germanic in Indy. The heart and soul of the place, of course, is its old-fashioned bakery, which steadily churns out black forest cherry cake, marzipan fruits, plum kuchen (seasonally) and endless other sugary delights. Come here for "Kaffeeklatsch," which essentially means lively and sometimes wistful conversation with friends over coffee and a morsel of something sweet. A much-needed breath of Old World culture in a fast-paced society.

Then, after you savor your delicious cake, take a moment to notice the cheerful disarray of German kitsch that surrounds you in every direction. Want Beersteins? Lederhosen? Ancient German videos? Cuckoo clocks? Those bumper stickers that say "DE" for Deutschland? Weird animals carved out of wood? You can find all this, and much, much more--more than you can imagine, really--in Heidelberg Haus.

This place is, apparently, a well-kept secret of Indianapolis. Its delightfully schlocky charm will brighten your gloomiest day. Prost!
