This was the best and the worst place. We had the coconut shrimp, Black and Tan onion rings, fish and chips, and corn beef pastie. All of which were amazing!!! If it were just for the food we would have given this place a five star. With the good you get the bad and the bad was most of the restaurant. We sat outside being that it was a beautiful clear day and this place had the worst layout for tables, all shapes sizes, styles and placed wherever they would not fall over. The service was alright but we were missed several times when trying to order. When we ordered our drinks the waitress took our IDs to scan and we almost left without getting them back. We got a drink glass with lip marks and silverware with food on them. I would not have been so critical if the prices weren't as high as they were. I don't think it's fair to charge what they do for the small quantities and poor environment.
Review Source:I have gone here numerous times and it may be the first Scottish pub I've ever been to, but it's always consistently good.
I have tried the Mac & Cheese, Cottage Pie, Bangers & Mash, Braveheart, Banger Sliders and Fish & Chips so far, which were all delicious and they may have my favorite Fish & Chips in the Portland area. However, I would say the prices are a little high for what you get, so I recommend trying to go during happy hour, which is only from 3 to 6pm. They do have the largest whiskey selection in the entire Portland metro area and have a fair amount of imported beers as well.
It can get very crowded during prime hours since there isn't a lot of space or seating. It has a small upstairs with three connecting tiny rooms, one which has a short bar, but it also has a downstairs that is their whiskey bar and offers live music on occasion. However it does have a nice "homey" feel to the interior and this is a great place to go during the summer, when you can take advantage of the outdoor seating (some of which is covered) and beautiful view of Willamette Falls. I've had both good and not so great service before, so I guess that depends on how busy it is, where you sit and who you are ordering from.
Overall though, this is a unique place that is well worth at least checking out once, especially if you are a connoisseur of whiskey and enjoy good food from the isles.
We came here on a Friday night, at peak business, and were lucky to get a seat. The atmosphere of this place screams Pub. Our server was bartending at the same time but had no problems getting us drinks and a food menu. Great selection of food and an even better selection of whiskey and brews. We ordered the fish and chips (half order) one of their beef pasties and some appetizers. Everything was excellent! You can tell these guys hired the right people because everything is made from scratch. My cask Scottish ale was great, and the lady and I each had a Widmer Green and Gold Kolsch, which weren't bad either. Overall I must say we were pleasantly surprised by how good everything was; we'll be back soon enough, maybe for lunch next time?
Review Source:the food is great but my family will no longer eat there .my brother and a friend had been there not long a go and saw the Grails making the salads thy messed with there hair and did not wash there hands that is a big no no to all of us Â
and is how you get a lot of hair in your food .
this is to bad because of some none caring people who work there .
that thy will lose out on our baseness .
Very good selection of Irish dishes and brews. Our food was very good. Prices for lunch selection were a bit high IMO. We will return in the future when we have an urge for good Irish food. Interesting interior and decor. Also has a few semi secluded/cozy tables. The walk thru the restaurant was a blast from an Irish past!
Review Source:This a great pub but it can get crowed, so be prepared. Â That should be an indication on just how good of a place this is. Â They have a great selection of beer - not just U.S. Microbrews but the really good stuff from across the pond.
I have never been disappointed here. Â If you are a fish and chips fan - this place is one of the few places in Portland that manages to get it right. Â It has been cooked to perfection every time (never over cooked like I find time after time at other places) - and they don't scrimp on the portions. Â A full portion is a FULL portion. Â
The place seems to have fallen from out of Europe somewhere. Â The seating is an eclectic mix of tables, chairs, stools, benches, etc. Â It makes the place very cozy. Â Just watch out for the one table upstairs next to bathroom - unless you want frequent visitors. Â
It is a place to kick back and take your time at. Â Not somewhere to go if you are in a hurry. Â The place is meant to be savored...
Got an email from a thoughtful pal-o-mine on Monday (October 22) ... all it said was, "201 2nd St, 97045, 600pm, tomorrow." Â I was sore tempted to look up the address; didn't do 'er though. I felt it was in keeping with the vaguely prize-in-a-box sense the email portrayed to not look it up.
What a great place this is. Rough and tumble and welcoming as can be. The food was fine! I wanted to try everything on the menu. All of it I tell ya! I held back and settled for two IMPERIAL pints of terrific beer, and a salad. Â I'd go back any time. Now, where can I get 20 ounce beer glasses??! HELP!
The reason for the call? It marked the 30th anniversary of the only marathon I ever ran (3:56:28). I'm a decidedly odd duck about what constitutes a "big date", and there are few, if any, bigger to me than 10-23-82. 'Grade School Fat Boy Runs 26.2!"
This was just the right place to celebrate a HUGE 30 year anniversary!
I'll break out my kilt next time, and yes, I still have the gorgeous legs! I can't run 26.2 any more. Hell, I can't drive that far without a standup break.
Beer in 20 ounce glasses! Betcha!
This is one of the best "unknown" pubs we have ever found. My wife and I have driven by this place 100x and never knew how magical of a place it is! The staff is super friendly and prompt and the food menu is amazing. Their whisky menu is out-of-this-world and is very extensive! The prices are very fair and the portion sizes are perfect. We will definitely come back to this place!
Review Source:As soon as I walked through the Highland Stillhouse, I knew I loved it. From the tiny hallway leading up to the upstairs dining area, to the massive whisky menu, the place has a "homey" feel to it. The seating areas upstairs are cozy--couches and little dimly-lit nooks provide perfect places to sip some Glenfiddich 18, or any of the other whisky on the menu.
I had a hard time deciding what to eat, so I started with a Guinness. That's kind of a no-brainer, and it was a perfect Guinness pour. I narrowed my dining choices down to a scotch egg and a Braveheart Sausage. Damn. This is one place that will need to be a secret from my doctor. Pretty sure my cholesterol levels shot up after the first bite. But it was good. So, so good. The Braveheart sausage is a sausage, wrapped in bacon, then deep fried. I mean, seriously, what's not to love about that?
For dessert? The previously mentioned Glenfiddich 18. Yum.
There is an outdoor patio area, and I saw signs regarding live music, but I think I was there too early to hear it. (Though I did hear bagpipes as I was leaving.)
I wish we had a place like this out in the Beav. Until we do, I'll definitely be going back to the Stillhouse.
If there's a better bar in the OC, I have yet to find it.
A neat old building, nearly 100 years old, that for the last 8 or so years has been in its current incarnation. It doesn't feel "try-hard" or half-assed in its identity as a Scots- style pub, and so easily passes the sniff test.
The fish and chips are famed here, and the full sized order is enough for 2 or 3 adults. There does not appear to be any variety beyond cod here that I saw (ie, Haddock, or Mahi Mahi, or halibut, etc) and so Frying Scotsman gets the nod for his superior (and enormous) fillets. However, I liked the chips and mushy peas, banger and mash and the haggis @ the Stillhouse. Plus, there's the added advantage of the full bar and non stop footie on the big screen. Oh--and the girls. The service has been reliably friendly and prompt. So to me, the Stillhouse and the Frying Scotsman are dead even... Â and in this big ole Metro area, dangit, there is room enough for more than one 5 star Scottish-style fish and chip establishment...
BEWARE!
On a warm, summer eve, the live music created a nice ambiance. My husband and I were looking forward to a great new experience. We ordered drinks - I received the wrong cider and my husband received warm, flat soda. The waitress went to check if they had the cider I ordered and get back to me. What little ice was in my husband's drink was fully melted (about 40 minutes later when the food arrived) before anyone came back to check on us. No water, flat soda, and a cider I wasn't sure if I was able to drink because it was not what I ordered for almost 3/4 of an hour.
The food arrived all at once - appetizer and food - because the waitress evidently placed the order incorrectly. But we did not get utensils or napkins for another 10 minutes.
A very sweet waitress from another table who was trying to make the situation right tripped en route to our table. We ended up with another table's three full entrees splayed all over our table, on us and into our food. Oh, and it tipped over my still untouched cider too.... resulting in yet another 15 minute "cider" run.
They did replace our food items that were ruined by the spill. But we received no manager visit and hardly an apology from the wait staff. Â $6 worth of drinks was our credit for the chaos we endured that evening. I still didn't have the right cider.... nor did we get water until our dessert arrived. Our real waitress got snooty about how busy she'd been when asked when I'd get the right cider. She said they were out of the cider I had asked for ---- an HOUR into the evening!
Despite everything, the food was okay although my husband actually asked if we might get a takeout burger on the way home to fill his stomach. The live music and ambiance was nice. I've read the glowing reviews below, but have a difficult time believing them after tonight.
We went because of a coupon I had, and because of the reviews. Because of the generous credit, we were just under the minimum for the coupon, but at that point we just wanted to pay and be done with it. Despite 2 http://restaurant.com coupons remaining, it'll be a long time (if ever) before we consider a return.
I sincerely hope for others' sake that ours is a singular, isolated incident....
First, you've got to understand this is darned close to authentic. Â So if you're vegan, scared of cholesterol, like your establishments bright, spotless & airy, please don't come here.
Ever had a scotch egg? No? Well, you better try one. How about hog wings? Missing out, you are. Haggis balls & mushy peas? Alright, optional, but if you're broadpalated you won't be dissapointed. And there's plenty of reviews on the excellence of the fish & chips. I can only ditto.
Look, if you're going to be authentic this food needs to glisten and drip a bit. Â They use top-notch ingredients served piping hot, so it's light & crispy, not heavy & greasy.
They drag the UK & US for beer, and the list is never the same twice; reminds me of Produce Row long ago. Â If you want cheap, order Stella or PBR. Â You can get well fed & likkered for less than $10 off the happy hour menu.
Oh, did I mention the pages and pages of whiskey? Â You'll spend a lifetime (or life savings!) working thru them all.
And they have excellent coffee, Caffe Umbria. Â Finish with sticky toffee with ice cream.
And be in for a racous treat if there's a Timbers game on the telly......
I lived in UK when I was very young. Â Not too fond of the country but it had its charms. I normally don't care too much about anything dealing with food from UK but I like this place. :)
I went to Highland Stillhouse, when I first moved to Oregon... I just wanted to drink, read stuff on my phone and not be bothered by anyone. Â PERFECT CORNER UPSTAIRS! :)
Went back with my babe, we had a full-meal, the dinner was way better than I thought it would be. Â LARGE portion, awesomely greasy food (PERFECT) - YEP!!! So watch out if you are the type that don't eat real food (maybe you don't need to come here). :P
My dad has raved on and on about this little ol place in the OC, he says they have the best fish and chips! And ever since he heard of my bf living in the OC, he's always telling me to stop in there!......
Well a year later and we finally made our way in. Strange it took us so long to try a place right in your back yard! It was a Friday night, not just any Friday night, but the Friday before St Paddy's day....what the **** were we thinking!?! It was off the hook in and out of this place! They had a tent set up in the back with music and brew happenin. We opted for the "in" part and went inside the bar.
It was super busy but we got a table under the window. Did we just step into Europe somewhere? This couldn't be the OC of Oregon? It's super rustic in here, flags hanging up on the ceiling, wood tables and chairs everywhere. The windows are like old, with stained glass. Cool little rustic place. I never did see the upstairs of this place, but will next time I come in.
We had black and tan's and onion rings to start. The black and tans were good, but were mixed... where did the "tan" go? I know my dad had said the fish and chips were the bomb, but I wanted to try something different. So we had bangers n mash, and chicken curry pastie. Pastie...what is a pastie I asked? First thing to come to mind was the pastie the dancers wear to cover the area on their "girls"! Haha...no it's not a boob acessesory, it's fried dough stuffed with chicken, like a meat pie. It was really good, not greasy.Flaky like a pie crust.
Next time I would like to try their whiskey tastings and the fish and chips that my dad raves about. Stillhouse is a cool little place for some quick authentic food and brew.
Love it here. Been quiet a number of times with my friends and children. They were super friendly, great with my kids - even when the little outlaws were being rambunctious - and had pretty decent food. The selection of whiskey is fantastic and they have great beer.
The Still House is cozy and has a comfortable atmosphere - It's the only pub I really want to go to.
In my previous review I balked at The Highland Stillhouse charging around $15 for fish and chips. Well, I've since learned that the high charge is for an eight piece platter of cod fish. The Highland Stillhouse offers a half order (4 pieces of fish) for around $8. My server commented that the half order is sufficient for most people.
With your order of fish and chips comes a delicious homemade cole slaw, and the Highland Stillhouse's superb Highland fries. After a recent Yelp thread I've convinced that we Americans love fish and chips just as much as the British. That being said, The Highland Stillhouse serves up one of the best plates of fish and chips in town.
Authentic. Â A literal translation of what i experienced whilst in Europe. Â A truly authentic experience.
The food is amazing (bangers and mash all...day...long). Â I'm picky about my mushed peas, and these were great. Â I'm almost certain the bangers are handmade, also. Â
The beer and liquor selection is terrific. Â The service was curt and a bit too punctual...but it's a true pub! Â It's supposed to be like that. Â I want a bar lass who may slap me just as soon as kiss me...and this place hugged that line well.
Very hodge-podge decor, and totally homey and comfortable. Â Again, a very well done pub experience.
Would i suggest it? Â No...because then you'll go and i won't be able to get a seat, so stay away.
The food was really greasy. Â The service seemed a overwhelmed. Â And the place was just over-packed.
Lots of different scotch...but although I enjoy those it takes a long time for a drink to come and they're expensive because scotch is expensive.
I wouldn't go out of my way to come here.
"We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone."
My girlfriend and I are in our mid-late twenties and have been to this place three times. The third time will be our last. (see edit)
The first two times were okay. The beer is very good according to my girlfriend (I wasn't drinking, and the N/A selection is fine). Great selection as others have mentioned. Small portions, but fair pricing for the size. I enjoy the atmosphere and music especially.
We decided to give it a third try on a Friday evening around 5 o'clock. They were getting busy, and we parked in the upper area (museum parking lot). We took a seat on the bottom floor in a cozy booth. The younger server gave us our menus and carded us both. She walked off with our ID while we browsed the food and drink fare. She returned a short while later and said to my girlfriend:
"Your ID won't scan, so you can't get any alcohol. You're welcome to stay though!"
We both kind of looked at our server in awe. It won't scan? But you can read it clearly, and we are both CLEARLY OLDER THAN YOU? We sheepishly gathered our coats and left without saying anything.
To be fair: My girlfriend has poor eyesight and doesn't drive. Her ID is several years old and the fancy barcode on the back is worn to the point that you cannot scan it. The front is clearly legible, and the ID is still valid for another three years. In the three-and-a-half years that I've known her, she's never been refused service based on her un-scannable ID.
I think the server made a poor choice to refuse alcohol based on that alone. That visit, and the other factors aforementioned has made me move on to other establishments.
EDIT:
We've been back to this place after getting new IDs. The service is good, and the environment is one-of-a-kind. You simply can't get food, diverse beer selection, and ambiance like this at other places in OC. That's why we returned.
The Highland Still House is a "Grddddddeat Scoathish Treasua". Â The owner Mick hasn't been wrong yet in suggesting a good spirit or in guessing what I'm drinking. The dark narrow halls, steep stairs, and Highland maps on the walls takes me straight to Scotland. They're food is good; Hagus Balls, deep fried pretzels, bangar sliders, and Scotch eggs are delicious. As far as spirits; they have dozens of Scotch selections, maybe even a hundred!
Mick and his team are no haffet squattle.
Wonderful food, Wonderful service, Wonderful beer. Â
I've been meaning to come visit this place for months now. Â Each time something just happens to interfere. Â But was able to get there last night with me girly and had a wonderful time.
The food is definitely different here. Â The menu is full of Scottish fare. They even have Haggis Balls. Â The menu is split into small plates and large plates. Â So to start we ordered a Pasties with beef. Â It was a nice crusty pocket with delicious beef stew inside with a slaw on the side. The slaw was not like one would get anywhere else that is soaked and dripping with whatever dressing. Â This slaw was dry and very tasty.
Oh! Â The Beer. Â What wonderful Beer. Â I went for the Belhaven Twisted Thistle IPA. Â Oh Me Lord. Some good beer that be. Â Slightly malted IPA?
Dinner came and me lady had indulged herself on the cottage pie. Â No lamb based Shepards pie for her, but the beef tickled her fancy.
I was in a quandary as I wished to have many of the items on the menu. Â I knew that I would be able to eat much of me ladies pie. Â So, something other than would do the trick. Â Let's go for some basics, Bangers and Mash. Â And it was a good choice. Â This large plate filled me up with such flavorful lightly spicy bangers with onions and mustards. Â The Mash's gravy was dark and thick. Â Also had some mashed peas. Â
We were stuffed and I wanted to go for another pint of Belhaven's Wee Heavy. Â But I have to drive home (Damm it)... had to settle for only a taster of that most delicious liquid from heaven. Â "No, that's Bel-Ha-ven," the server said.
I love this place and wish they were much closer to my home....or maybe not, because I would end up spending all my nights here for the company the music and the great selection of whisky.
The outside patio on a middling warm fall day is a great experience-good company makes it better.
I love the fish and chips here. Â All around, the food, the location, the selection of whisky and the ambiance make this a great place to visit.
Depends on the day. Â I love the opium den feel of the upstairs lounge area. Â For some reason I've only been there on cold nights but they have an awesome lit up patio with a view of . . .the oregon city mill...but hey its still a view. Â
The owner is very friendly and I've bumped into him more times than not. Â He is typically diving into the crowd and welcoming people to his place.
Warning....there is LITTLE to NO parking. Â Especially if its on a live music night.
I've bumped into quite a few friends there. Â The beer is good, the food is fine. Â I'll definately be back again.
A rut. Â I'm in one. Â
Somewhere along life's highway my suped up cherry red convertible has swerved into a ditch and the only loner car available is a station wagon. Â An automatic one at that. Â
I'm not sure if I'll ever get into the fast lane again. Â I'm not even sure I know how to merge. Â Is my fucking turn signal even on? Â
God, I hope there is a rest stop soon. Â I think I'm going to be car sick. Â Plus I need to pee. Â Again...
My work has turned into a job; a stagnant time sucker, a toothless hooker that is only getting older, cheaper and no longer providing meaningful satisfaction. My hair is slowly thinning, my waist line is quickly expanding and my boyish good looks are starting to fade. Â I'm the old guy at the club, well that is if I ever made it out past nine at night. Â I no longer have the energy, the time or the inclination to be out after dark.
Damn it, I'm getting older. Â I'm maturing. Â Guys my age are no longer professional sports figures, and if they are, they are referred to as the grizzled veteran...the guy sitting at the end of the bench. Â
Don't get me wrong, I'm extremely happy with my life. Â In love with the TLB, and proud new father of Little O'. Â I want for nothing. Â I couldn't ask for anything more. Â Well except a few less wrinkles, less hair on my body and a little more on my head.
It seems as if it was yesterday I was in high school, pimpled faced and awkward with my entire life in front of me. Â I can still hear my high school Economics teacher's distinctive voice, imparting wisdom and knowledge to my sponge like mind. Â It seems like yesterday. Â Oh wait. Â It was. Â Thru the magic of Facebook I reconnected with a significant mentor from my past; that one teacher who made a difference, the one who actually seemed to give a shit.
We met up for a beer (Guinness on nitro with an extremely patient pour) and food at the Highland Still House. Â What a hidden gem; I had no idea this place existed. Â This Scottish Pub and Eatery has a fantastic menu, a plethora of extremely cute servers and a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Â Plus, they have a fantastic patio overlooking the river, which will be a certain destination when the weather warms up next year after months of cold, rain and grey clouds.
We spent a couple of hours catching up in the upstairs bar; while downstairs offers a family friendly area. Â The warm red walls and cozy seating set the tone for reminiscing and discussing what life had thrown at us these past 20 some years. Â I ordered the fish and chips, which were superb, although they got cold as I continued to recount the past two decades of my life.
So much to talk about, so much to cover. Â Amazing moments of both unbridled joy as well as heartache. Â True love and loved ones lost. Â New additions as well as additions by subtraction. Â Adventures, travels and lessons...
And then it dawned on me...I really have accomplished much in such little time, yet there is still so much to look forward to. Â A life that has and continues to be well worth living...a life with new adventures and hopefully a few slick curves ahead.
Maybe this loaner station wagon isn't so bad? Â Sure it has a few dents and some mileage on it, and maybe isn't as flashy as the convertible, but damn it is a nice smooth ride. Â Maybe this isn't a rut I'm in after all...maybe this is just a new lane on a scenic highway of life. Â Besides, it isn't about the car you drive, it's really about the driver and how he decides to drive the car.
When it comes to fantastic Scottish pub food, this place is amazing. I've never been to Scotland, but I sure felt like I had by the time I left. Their fries are more like quartered potatoes and are very tasty and crisp. They have a huge selection of Scottish Beer and an even larger list of Scotch Whiskey. I had the Dark Island beer made in the Orkney Islands and it was one of the best beers I've ever had.
For dinner, I had Bangers and Mash with a side of green peas. The bangers (sausage) were very well seasoned with a slightly sweet taste and were covered with grilled onions. Everyone else had equally fantastic dinners.
Bottom line: The next time we're in Oregon City, this is where we are going for dinner.
Me and some girl friends had a delightful time here. Â The waiter was funny and attentive. Â The food was good, especially the fries. Â And *definitely* save room for desserts - all we tried were delicious.
We sat on the covered porch, and there was a nice view that enticed us out and across the street to see the falls. There was pleasant music quietly in the background, just low enough for atmosphere but not too loud we couldn't talk.
OK, We stopped by here AGAIN and I have to say this time the food was REALLY GROSS! I had a $9.75 spicy chicken burger that tasted like crap and was the size of maybe a baby chick at best....I said something to the waiter and he said, thats what it is! Well the beers are fine but the service and food here SSSUUUCCCKKKSSS! Â
No more chances for this dump!
Please; save your money and try somewhere else!
I don't know about their beer selection, but the bartender makes a killer Bloody Mary. Very possibly the best I have ever had. He was also pouring a couple of customers mead, which I thought was kind of impressive.
The inside of the place looks warm and cozy, the kind of place that yourself along with a few cohorts could sit in a nook and plan how to overthrow the government. The outside patio area is probably bigger than the entire 2nd floor but the view of the old mills and river are amazing.
And with all that plotting and planning, if it gets late into the evening and you need to eat something they have a late hour menu that includes Haggis Balls. Fish and chips are made with an 18 beer batter that really compliments the cod. Texture is just the right amount of crunch yet revealing a flaky morsel of fishy goodness inside.
If I am ever in the Portland area again, I will definitely be swinging by here for the fish and a nice pint of Bloody Mary goodness.
I was visiting some friends that shared this great restaurant with me. Â Great fish and chips and excellent beers on tap. Â I was a bit disappointed because they had just ran out of Tricerahops, but Hop Stoopid was a great second option. Â The service we friendly and quick for a group of about 10 of us. Â I had a half portion of the fish and chips. Â Unless you are very hungry the half portion of fish and chips is plenty.
I would love to have this place local to me. Â I'm sure I would be in often.
A strong 4 stars for The Highland Stillhouse.
Each time I have come here, it's been a totally different experience. Drizzly sunday morning: sat in upstairs bar and had breakfast. Strange food for a breakfast but lots of it. Huge amounts.
Warm summer night: sat outside on the patio listening to live music. Service wasn't the greatest but sure couldn't beat the atmosphere.
New Years Eve: packed house, live music downstairs, everyone friendly and having a good time. Shoulder to shoulder crowded but felt like what I imagine a true pub in Scotland might feel like. The owner was so kind to put my fur in his office. My wine glass was re-newed the second I took my last sip of each glass.
I like this place. I think perhaps I don't like Scottish food, so I can't judge them for the food. The wine was quite good. The music is excellent. The owner wore a kilt. 4 stars
This is our favorite place to go in Oregon City. Â It's not pretty from the outside, and parking can be a problem if it is crowded, but it's great on the inside and the food is excellent. Â Â Favorites are fish and chips, meat pasty, scotch eggs.
We have brought our young child here once. It was somewhat difficult to figure out where kids could go - I think minors are ok on the patio (or part of it) and down on the main floor near the front entrance. I can't remember if they had high chairs -- I don't think so, part of the reason we haven't gone in a while.
I'll start with the facts and end with the funny.
Had an amazing meal on the outdoor patio overlooking the Willamette Falls with my extended English clan. Â I've been dying to come here for ages, but I was a little nervous to try it for the first time with my English relatives (aka experts) in town. Â After all, this is the English uncle that warned me about Scottish lads when I studied in Edinburgh. Â Also, it doesn't look like much from the outside since it is in the industrial part of Oregon City. Â
There are three sections: a public house on the lower level, cozy pub on the upper floor (no kids allowed) which is broken into several small rooms, and the outdoor patio. Â You can smoke outside, but there is smoke-free dining inside. Â We had dinner on the patio on a hot Sunday evening and there was live music by three local lasses.
Artichoke & crab dip to start with a round of local beer and hard cider. Â Three of us had the chicken curry pastie and it was delicious. Â Since it is one of their "small plates," I wasn't expecting such a large serving with slaw on the side. Â The fish and chips were outstanding. Â Nice batter and a full order was ridiculously large; probably more than two people can eat. Â Bangers and mash with mushy peas, grist bronzed salmon and spicy chicken sandwich were all devoured. Â My kids had the deep fried pretzels and burgers. Â No separate children's menu, but they have cheese toasties and other side dishes that work just fine.
Several funny things happened during our visit that easily elevate this to a five star joint even though the service itself wasn't perfect.
Next to the patio, there is a grassy bluff, complete with a cannon and boulders, so the kids could roam and feel wild and free while the adults enjoyed our meal. Â My entree was delayed and the waitress offered to bring me a beer, but I asked her to choose a whisky for me instead and the Aberlour was smooth. Â When I went to use the w/c in the upstairs pub there was a group of people sitting at the table nearby and they told me they were the bathroom trolls. Â I had to pay a fee or tell a joke before leaving.
So I am horrible at telling jokes, but fortunately Adam P. had just told me a wildly inappropriate one this week so I pulled up a chair and shared it with the group. Â It totally killed. Â
So this is the definition of a neighborhood place. Â Welcoming with spaces for families and singles, smokers and non, throw in live music and an outdoor patio, tasty food at reasonable prices, a huge beer and whisky menu, and what are you waiting for?!?
Slainte!
Picture this tableau: a dreary gray day, wet and dark. Â A roaring falls and a dilapidated industrial dam and mill below the highway. Â And above, on a windswept cliff-side, you find a whitewashed old public house with a cheerful light emanating from its small windows.
If ever you needed a perfect setting for a dram of scotch or a pint of Old Speckled Hen, perhaps with a pastie or fish and chips to carry you through, the Highland Stillhouse offers it.
The ale selection is a nice blend of Northwest ales and British Isle specialties, including unusual selections such as Belhaven's Twisted Thistle India Pale Ale. Â The fish and chips are bang on and the mushy peas are exactly how I prefer my legumes. Â In fact, I have not had one downer in the lunches I've selected.
On days when the weather is less... er, Scottish, there are many outdoor tables on an upstairs patio where you can take in the view and enjoy your lunch or happy hour. But inside is where the Stillhouse is at its pubbish best. The upper floor, with its own small bar, has two rooms that feel almost like a private club, with darts and ample cricket and soccer memorabilia adorning the walls.
While we enjoyed our vittles on the last go-round, I noted the music was all British, Irish or Scottish - the Kinks, the Who, Led Zeppelin, Simple Minds, Traffic. Â That's what I call authenticity.
Winding your way downstairs you'll find a mural illustrating the workings of a still house (my only disappointment is that they don't have an actual still, but that's certainly the OLCC's fault) as you work your way to the larger (although still not large) lower bar.
This bar has, in it's modest scale, a phenomenal selection of Scotches; sadly I've only been here for work lunches so I have yet to sample them directly. Â But mark my words, one of these days I'm bringing the missus down here for a Sunday drive!
I love this place! It's convenient for me and this was about my sixth visit. I can only repeat what the other reviewers have stated. Good food, great music playing on the sound system, friendly wait staff, and a beer and whiskey selection that is out of control. The husband and wife owners have always been there when I've stopped by and are usually roaming around the place, greeting people and making everyone feel welcome.
I recently went with friends on St. Patrick's Day as part of their 'celtic' festival. Live music, an outdoor tent, and all kinds of people in green. I had the Irish stew which was fantastic. A tiny bit on the fatty side, but the flavor was outstanding. The Guiness and Smithwicks we were drinking definitely gave us the courage to try to sing along with the band (not a good idea when you don't know the words).
If you go, definitely make sure you visit both the upstairs and downstairs and check out the outdoor patio as well. There are lots of sweet little nooks upstairs that are great for sitting and reading a book or just cuddling with your significant other.
Plan a half day excursion when you visit the pub. You can catch the city trolley behind the parking lot which is a free service that runs about every half an hour and will take you through the lower (original) part of Oregon City. The driver will give you history lessons about the area, stopping at many of the historical sites and museums on the route. And don't forget to walk across highway 99 from the pub and see the Willamette Falls.
Sundays they have a full on Scottish breakfast with eggs, bangers, beans, tomatoes, scones, etc.
My neighborhood is replete with awesome dive bars, so I generally don't get out to the more civilised establishments that I hear about from time to time. Â Last week, a colleague suggested that we meet up for a post-work brew at the Highland Still House, and I figured I was in for a banal, yet tolerable experience at a cookie-cutter "pub". Â Fortunately, my expectations of schlocky poser anglophilia were way off the mark.
This place is way cool! Â With a comfy snug upstairs and a wide open public room downstairs, the Still House felt very much like the real article without trying too hard. Â The beer list is fantastic (and for you scotch lovers, you've got a winner) the service was sharp, and even the owners, a husband and wife team, were there to greet us.
I know, I know... Oregon City is like another planet for some of you. Â My suggestion is to make an afternoon of it. Â Next time I need a break from my dive bar rut... you'll find me there.
I went to this place with a friend and was blown away by everything I ate!
We shared Juliana's Artichoke & Crab Dip (crab on the side b/c I'm allergic).
My friend had Cottage Pie (like Sherpard's but with beef).
I had the Chicken Curry Pastie.
We also had a great beer, but I can't remember what kind.
Basically, everything that went into my mouth was Amazing! The staff was super, and the atmosphere was cozy and inviting. It's absolutely my new favorite eatery, unfortunately I live 2.5 hours away.
This non-smoking Scottish pub and eatery is all about you!!! And Whiskey, beer, wine, damn good food and YOU! Â One of my first visits there I felt so at home and happy to be greeted so warmly by the owners that when I left I said "thank you for having us." Â As if they had invited me into their home for dinner and drinks!!
The Pasties are the best I've ever had. Better than the Horse Brass. Mick spent all of last summer perfecting the ingredients for the pastry that holds either chicken curry or beef and vegetables with a dark or white gravy. SO GOOD! and only $5.50!?!
AND if that's not enough....they were playing Coldplay and Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers. My two favorite bands of all time.
Their Whiskey menu is out of control! Check it out online, it's divided by country and alphabetized. 42 from Speyside and about 100 more from West & Islands, Islay, Ireland,Northern Highlands, Canada and USA
Draught Beer Includes---- (changing with the season and when Mick gets a hold of something special)
Guinness (Ireland), Newcastle Brown Ale (U.K.)
Twisted Thistle (Scotland), Boddington's (U.K.)
Ninkasi Believer, Fulller's ESB (U.K.)
Black Butte Porter, Fearless Scottish Ale
Red Hook Longhammer IPA, Mactarnahan Amber
Widmer Hefeweizen, Stella Artois (Belgium)
There are at least another 20 interesting beers in the bottle and a full wine list by the glass or bottle. Trivia cards on every table, antique wood work throughout and ALWAYS WARM as hell. Â This is my second home :)
