My wfie and I stayed at The Hotel Donaldson on a Saturday night. This is a small hotel with something like 18 rooms in all. Each room was designed by an artist and has their own "look". The rooms have exposed brick and beams, and a number of windows with blinds and darkening/quieting panels.
Our room was very large. Walking in, we had a wet bar on the left and on the right was a pathway to the bathroom, with a closet on one side (with robes) and vanity area on the other side. The bathroom had a pocket door which was a first for me to see at a hotel; heated floors; glass shower. Back to the main room, the bed was large, very comfortable with ample room surrounding the bed. The room also included a desk & chair, a couch, chair, table and a TV mounted in the corner.
A nice touch was a hospitality hour for guests that included free beer, wine, soft drinks, fruit, cheeses, etc. on the second floor sitting area. Also, when checking in, you receive a room service order card to hang on your door. While they were numerous and reasonabled priced food items, guests also have the option to just have a tray of coffee & hot water delivered in the morning with a basket of baked goods.
We had other things going on so we didn't have time to enjoy the rooftop hot tub. The hotel also houses a nice restaurant where you can expect entrees in the $25-$45 range if I recall. The HoDo Lounge is a beautiful bar and was hopping that evening. The Fargo Film Festival happened to be going on in town at that time so the lounge included some visiting film celebrities mingling with the locals. Â There is something about the HoDo Lounge in that I never want to leave.
From the overall experience, this was my best hotel experience ever. A close second is The Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, VA. I can't wait for a good excuse to stay at The Hotel Donaldson again.
I stayed at The Hotel Donaldson while passing through on business. Â I had heard it was a special place from friends over the years and finally made it a point to stay there. Â My greatest regret is that I did not listen years ago. Â I will be back. Â A lot.
The staff was very friendly and helpful. Â
The room I stayed in (14) had two queen beds with a couch. Â Quite roomy and the bed was very comfortable. Â The bathroom has a heated tile floor. Â The lounge has a good selection of single malts and bourbons. Â
It costs more to stay in a hotel like The Donaldson but it is well worth it.
I needed to change my review from 5 stars to 2 after my dinner at the HoDo last night. First of all the positive aspects of dinner were the amazing selection of breads served before the meal, the lemon bar dessert and the scallop appetizer. Unfortunately the negatives outweigh the positives. Our server was awful. He didn't tell us about any specials or ask if we needed assistance with the menu. He seemed totally dumbfounded when my friend asked for a drink suggestion. He would walk away as we were asking a question to get water we had asked for instead of waiting until the questions were answered. He never asked how our meals were after we had started eating and let our plates sit in front of us after we had already told him we were finished. I hardly touched my food and said it wasn't to my liking and he didn't offer to get me something else or even respond to my comment. Â This is not the dining experience I expect from a five star hotel or a $170 bill for three people. It was not worth it and left a bad taste in my mouth.
Review Source:As soon as you find out you're visiting a new city, the first thing to do is consult Yelp, as to where to stay. The picture doesn't do it justice. It's in the heart of downtown, and you can walk to many places which is what we did the first day. The pros far exceed any inconveniences. Since it's an artsy atmosphere at every turn, does it have to include the damn toilet. The ultra low stylish squatters. Since you are already using state of the art fixtures from Koelher's use their toilets also. I had a room with a tub/shower. I had to lay a towel in the tub, because I almost killed myself slipping. They do have shower only rooms so this might be something to consider when booking. The tub drain is on the slow side. You're gonna love the TV, unfortunately no DVD player. They have a Bose CD player in the room, so this isn't unreasonable and they get constant requests for it. I was constantly tossing and turning all night on the marshmellow soft mattress. In spite of this, it's still the best place I ever stayed in. And if I won the lottery I'd pull a howard hughes and live in it. I loved this room right off the elevator, plenty of cool lighting, and the urban art decorating the walls. The staff are all very young, yet so helpful, without the stiffness. We did the valet parking for the extra $15. a night. We get back at 11:00 one night, and we had no problem with someone coming down and parking it for the night. In the room is an unbelievable mini bar, with gourmet snacks offered. It's the kind of hotel you want to hang out in which is just what I did on the first day. The extra touches are too numerous to mention. The only room service I ordered was a glass of lemonade, because it's one of the best I ever had.
Review Source:I agree with everyone so far about the hotel. Â My wife and I used to book a room there as a Christmas gift to each other before we were married. Â It was a great gift because we knew we both would love it! Â We live in Fargo but rarely go downtown so it also kind of neat to stay downtown once in a while and hit up a few of the bars down there and not have to worry about getting a ride home!
Highly recommended (especially if you are trying to impress a significant other!)
I. LOVE. THIS. HOTEL.
It is quite honestly my favorite of all the hotels I've ever stayed in. Â That's saying a lot. Â I've stayed in a hotel roughly three nights a week for about 5 years of my life.
It is bright, clean, unique, artistic, beautiful, welcoming, urban, convenient, friendly, accommodating...do you get it yet? Â I can keep going...
Okay, even the workout facility is unique and awesome. Â They have boxing gloves and a bag. Â I mean, that is awesome. Â Rough day at work? Â Come on "home" and box it out!
The HoDo Lounge is phenomenal, the breakfast in the morning- complimentary pastries and coffee- and other options for food- delivered to you within a half hour window that you choose?  Perfect  The Lemon Souffle Pancakes are the highlight of my week sometimes when I'm in Fargo!
The beds are perfect. Â You can buy them- but how would I get it back to Ohio? I love the lighting- the mini bar is totally raid worthy- I have to reign myself in so I don't buy it all.
HAVE I MENTIONED THAT THERE ARE TRUFFLES with your turn down service?
Yeah. Â AND THEY ARE GOOOOOD.
Local art- awesome. Wine and Cheese hour? Yes, please!
As if you needed any more of a reason? Â Well, the prices are fairly comparable to any chain hotel- a difference of maybe $20-30 if you book ahead of time. Â They have their own rewards program, too! Â Why would you EVER choose any place else in Fargo?
4 stars for the food/bar
5 stars for the hotel
Food:
Creative, fun menu with a really unique setting. The Lavosh is my favorite, veggies and havarti cheese on a bubbly cracker bread...YUM!
Hotel:
Best I've ever stayed in. Booked for 2 nights over my wedding - each room is unique and designed/decorated by a local artist. I highly recommend the Waterfall Suite which has a jacuzzi tub in which the water fills from the ceiling. Is about 400+ square feet. Â The bed was like clouds - the are made from the local "comfort king" and I'm ordering one! Sheets are amazing. Cute little breakfast in the lobby in the a.m. All for $200 a night!
This is actually a review of the restaurant/lounge at the HoDo (NOT the hotel, itself). Â I was visiting a friend on my drive cross-country and we stopped in for drinks. Â They had a special martini with basil (or some other herb) which was phenomenal and not bad at around $7. Â We watched a wedding party stop in to say hello. Â This is a place where you will quickly meet the staff and become friends. Â Very relaxed and inviting.
Review Source:Best night sleep in over a month of traveling. Â The bed was a fluffy cloud. Â The bathroom had a rainfall shower like I wish I had. Â Checkout is a lenient noon. Â
Service is excellent--I left two bags a few days in advance. Â When I checked in, the bags were waiting in my room. Â
Some street and train noise, but if you're used to cities, nothing egregious.
