Came in for a late lunch (around 2pm) with a friend.
The restaurant was fairly empty, and service was fairly prompt. Servers were polite, though knew nothing about the Philippine items on the menu.
Started with egg drop soup, which was bland and salty. Moderate egg, and no onions! Tea was OK, not too strong but decent basic black flavor. Both soup and tea were served nice and hot.
I ordered Mongolian Beef, since I haven't had this in a couple years and she said it was good. [Didn't test the Philippine foods since she couldn't really tell me much about them :( ] The portion was huge, with an enormous helping of rice, and a piece of tempura chicken.
The beef was OK, but very salty (expected in Chinese food), and the rice was very mild. Beef served over rice noodles added a nice crunch to the dish, which otherwise was very basic. Food was served hot and fresh.
Friend ordered Egg Foo Young. Again, large serving with a lot of rice. Said flavor was OK, but not as good as two places he mentioned which he often visits. (I don't recall the places he mentioned, which are in Mt Prospect) He took one bite of the tempura chicken, and left the rest.
Prices seemed a little high, but not too bad for the portion size. Service was decent, but there were only four tables to be served, so can't comment on lunch or dinner times.
May come back for the Philippine Buffet, but the Chinese was not worth the trip - and we live across town. :( Servers need to be familiarized with the menu items, or have a brief description in the menu!
Horrible customer service and no telephone manners. The phone person should be fired. I have been ordering from this place for the last 4 years ... Never again, train your staff not to be rude to customers, this is how restaurants go out of business by loosing regular customers due to rude and unprofessional help.
Review Source:I have to agree best crab ragoons around. On my second visit though while waiting for my take out order I observed one of the cooks picking both sides of their teeth , finger in mouth, wipe on apron and continue to cook...So I have to assume not very concious of hygene when cooking. Sad to say cant get over it and will not order from them again
Review Source:First of all, easily the best crab rangoons you will ever have. Â A bit expensive but extremely worth it.
Anyways, I cannot say anything about the buffet or eating in, but I have gotten take out more times than you can shake a stick. Â They are consistent and quality. Â The most important thing, is they are knowledgeable. Â When I call and ask what ingredients are in certain dishes, they are honest and know everything to a T. Â For example, I recently discovered I have higher blood pressure, so we have been cutting back on our sodium and MSG and ordered no salt no MSG the last time. Â After I requested an order of egg foo young, right away the person on the phone warned me that the egg foo young sauce already has MSG in it. Â It was kind, courteous, and I was very grateful. Â
As far as food goes, my favorite thing to order is the orange chicken, as it is crispy and full of flavor. Â My main complaint is that the orange chicken has noodles at the bottom, when I wish they was more chicken. Â My life is a big fan of their beef and broccoli.
Based on my review so far, you may be wondering why I only ranked it 4 stars - this is due to the fact that when you order from here, you end up paying double compared to most other Chinese places. Â I'm not sure it is worth the extra cost, but I still pay it. Â Especially for those dang crab rangoons...
It did take almost an hour after placing my order online and I only live a couple of minutes away. Â The egg drop soup left much to be desired. Â Not enough pieces of egg white, not a single green onion in it at all, and kind of bland.
The crab rangoon was some of the best I've ever had, Â And the veggie egg rolls were fantastic! Â Except for the bottom bite that had been sitting in the bottom of the container that was literally dripping in grease (but grease is to be expected with Chinese food). Â
All in all, pretty good and I would order from here again.
I specifically came here for the filipino buffet as advertised by Ron Villaro on TFC (the filipino channel). There is a filipino buffet every Sunday from 12-3pm for $12.95 per person. There is a coupon out online for $2 off a person for up to 8 people til 8/31/12.
This filipino buffet is by all means one of the better ones out there not to bad name other restaurants. But a buffet is a buffet, it is what it is. I was still excited though since it was a pinoy buffet and I wanted to see what they had to offer.
I came here with my brother, cousin, and godson. We scoped out the buffet asap. They had regular white rice and garlic rice(needs a bit more garlic). They had shanghai egg rolls which were tasty and big veggie egg rolls. Some of the main dishes include: Sinigang(sour soup), pancit(noodles), chicken appretada(chicken with potatos), bangos (fried milk fish), beef with ampalaya(beef with bitter melon), lechon kawali (pork belly), and beef kaldareta(beef stew). For dessert they had chinese cookies, fried donuts, and turon.
My fave dish here was beef and ampalaya and the sinigang. Everything else was decent but not over the top wow. Overall a good buffet.
This restaurant is pretty spacious with lots of booths.
I think the food is really good at the House of Szechwan. I absolutely love their egg rolls and crab rangoons! The only thing is that they are a little bit on the expensive side and also that they do not have free refills on soft drinks. I know a lot of restaurants are cutting back on the refills but I personally am always looking to hydrate myself with some liquids! The customer service I think is good... They do have lunch specials that are pretty affordable but not everyone can make it during lunch but it's nice that it applies on weekends.
I recommend the combination fried rice and the beef teriyaki!
House of Szechwan is definitely better than your local hole in the wall Chinese restaurant. The food that they make tastes fresher, is less saltier, and more presentable. I do like their Chicken with Broccoli dish with steamed rice, and their potstickers (dumplings) and egg rolls are edible. The only other place that I can think of in the immediate area that is better, in my opinion, is Chef Ping in Schaumburg. Now that place is always packed and the service is quite excellent. But back to House of Szechwan, my friend did supposedly have a bad experience here once about a year ago. His order had a small clump of about 5 black hairs that was in his food. Kind of freaked me out, but I only have ordered once from there since I heard that. Gave me the willies!
Review Source:Gave this place a second chance after a very mediocre first try. Had the $57 meal for two delivered, NOT CHEAP, had to throw most of the food away, it was horrible. The egg rolls were tolerable for left-overs. The chicken fried rice was flavorless, the empress chicken was soggy and flat out weird. The crab Rangoon was a giant load of cream cheese. The pot stickers were, nasty and the "sauce" for them tasted like straight mirin with some kind of vegetable(?) slivers. We threw the menu away.
Review Source:this place is a cut above other Chinese restaurants in the area in my opinion, it isn't great (none are) but it is better, flavors seem more pronounced, less greasy, etc etc.
This location of House of Szechwan (there are two) serves a Filipino menu which I've been enjoying, some dishes are certainly better than others and Filipino food isn't for everyone.
Definitely worth a stop if you're in the Des Plaines area and hungry for solid Chinese food at very respectable prices. I've stopped in a couple times now for lunch and have yet to be disappointed. The lunch portions are huge and for about $7.00, you can't go wrong. The complimentary Egg Drop Soup was to our table as soon as we sat down, and was very, very palatable. Their white and fried rice has yet to be under or overcooked, and the meat (I've had shrimp and chicken) and vegetables are pretty solid. Some of my cooked vegetables have been a bit undercooked and/or close to raw, but the flavor more than makes up for it. Service is great, food comes out quick, and the bill is always less than I expect. It's definitely my go-to place if I'm in or around the Northwest Suburbs. Don't forget the chili paste!
Review Source:Just placed my order over an hour ago on their online website. The order was nice, but what I ordered didn't match what was presented on the website. Â I called to ask to speak with the manager after delivery my order. Unfortunately, the manager made excuses and did nothing to correct the problem. Â I order from some place else next time.
Review Source:Food is good for carry out, but every time I eat at the restaurant, server(male) is slow, drinks take forever. One time we got another tables food after waiting 45 mins for our food and that was after waiting 15 mins for the server to bring our drinks and it was slow. (3 other tables) and a table that walked in at the same time walked out before we got our food.
Review Source:Great traditional Chinese restaurant that is a big step above your average take-out places. Â The restaurant itself invites you to dine in and stay awhile. Â Nice sized room with the typical traditional Chinese decor but much warmer than some of the stark take-out places. Â This place has the decor, attentive service and good food. Â
And the best eggrolls in the area. Â We like the teriyaki beef, mooshoo pork and Mongolian Beef. Â The latter two could use a bit more spice so ask for it if you are so inclined.
eh. nothing to get excited about. the crab rangoon was kinda gross, which is saying a lot for me because i totally dig crab rangoon. the shrimp chips were good but i really have nothing to compare those to. and the mongolian beef was nice, i suppose, maybe just not my favorite dish.
everything was overpriced, though. if it was cheaper, maybe i'd give it another go and order something else. but for the small amount of mediocre food we got it was not worth the 20-something bucks. i've had much, much better.
i think i would have actually preferred panda express.
If anyone wants a good chinese restaurant experience visit them here. The food is prepared great and does not taste like your typical rubbery chicken. If you order take out they put a piece of cardboard in the bag with high quality plastic containers. Several of the waiters are great. The decor feels like the year of the dragon in China! They are very busy during the week and weekends during peak dinner times. Best time to visit is around 8 p.m.
Review Source:Great Chinese food, so close to my house. I remember showing my mom this restaurant, and then her nearly forcing me to eat ther every night for a week. Wait, no, that was last month. Aaaaaaaaaaah. I can still taste that Crab Rangoon. If you're heading down Northwest Highway and hungry, STOP, then think about where you are in relation to House of Szechwan.
Review Source:Probably my favorite chinese restaurant in the entire area. Â It is not necessarily cheap, but the food is plentiful and damn good.
If you eat in restaurant for lunch, or order a full dinner, you'll get soup and tea. Â Make SURE you get the Wonton soup, which is really good - as others have said though, the alternative is definitely not for everybody, and I found it pretty gross.
The tea, along with the rest of the meal, has always been really good. Â Portions are large, and I never feel like the food had been sitting out prior to my ordering it. Â
The owners are incredibly nice here, and I've never found the service lacking. Â The meal seems to move at whatever pace you'd like - I've had dinner here in under an hour when in a rush, but I've also spent substantially longer if catching up with friends or family.
Overall I would not hesitate to recommend this place to anybody that has a taste for Chinese. Â Try the orange chicken, it's pretty great.
I absolutely love their Chicken with Garlic Sauce!!! I used to get the Sesame Chicken with white rice which is also pretty good, but when I would take it home to eat later it got too hard on the outside. But hey, my whole family loves the place, the waiter Kenny is very nice and always takes time to talk even if they're busy. I would recommend this place to anyone who has a family...they have round booths in the corner, perfect for the little ones!
Review Source:Basically what everyone else said... typical suburban Chinese restaurant. Everything is pretty standard...
Their saving graces:
-They deliver
-They have mailer coupons... Usually for free egg rolls with delivery or a discount if you dine in. Why should I only get the discount if I dine in? Am I not still a customer if I order take out!? STOP TRYING TO FORCE ME TO SIT IN A RESTAURANT IF I DON'T WANT TO DAMMIT!
-They restaurant is decent on the inside
-It is close to mi casa (a special yay for that! manders can be a lazy little lady when it comes to food... so the closer, the better)
All in all, okay... I'd rather go to China Wok on Golf Rd near McDonalds. SO amazing.
The requirements for a good Chinese joint in the 'burbs are so easy: Â you have to be good and you have to be quick. Â House of Szechwan hits on both counts. Â The food itself is probably more of a "3" but they have some good stuff. Â Granted, I haven't tried all of the 400+ menu items they have, but my particular favorites are the Barbecued Pork Kow for an entree and I'm a HUGE fan of their Cajun Combination Fried Rice. Â I could damn near eat that by itself and call it a meal. Â They also have a good vegetable soup. Â I'm less of a fan of some of their breaded chicken items, which seem to be 'too breaded.' Â
Service is lightening fast and very friendly. Â I usually just go to pick it up and no matter what I order the dinner is always ready by the time I get there in 10-15min. Â One major tip - if you are a soy sauce fiend like me, make sure you request extra packets of soy sauce (or sweet & sour or mustard) if you are getting a takeout or delivery order. Â I like to drench everything in soy sauce and it's a bit disappointing when I get home only to find two soy packets in my bag. Â They'll gladly add more if you ask.
Decent chinese food and they deliver. Â One nice thing is you can choose plain white rice or their fried rice with your lunch box or individual items. I like their "fried rice' because it does not have meat in it so it tastes flavorful without tasting fried. Â They do not have brown rice. Â I like the kung pao chicken and chicken with broccoli. Â They give you lots of broccoli which is nice. Â Overall very decent for good ole' American chinese food!
Review Source:Typical suburbian chinese. Â The food is good for Americanized Chinese food and the service is very good. Â Friendly staff, good food, and much better location than their other site in Mt. Prospect which has terrible parking and feels like you are eating in a shoe box.
The funny thing is that for years this location was a different chinese resteraunt and they finally closed. Â Next someone came in and ripped everything out, putting in a weird little grocery store. Â They failed within a year and then this place comes back in, putting the kitchen back in and turning it back into a Chinese resteraunt. Â In my opinion, as long as you are ok with non-authentic Chinese, this is a good place. Â
Clean, good food, nice people. Â It meets the basic requirements.
Went to this location as it is close to home and had a two-fer coupon from Entertainment.. Â Pleasantly surprised.
Clean, exellent service, pleasant music not too loud, extensive menu. Â Everyone chips in to clean tables regardless of if it is their section.
Egg rolls - delish, not greasy, just right crispness, perfect balance of ginger
onion pepper tomato beef- very good
orange beef ordered mild was still a bit spicy but quite flavorful
Each of our entrees was betw $10-11 but we took home enough for lunch or dinner the next day. Â Will likely order delivery next time and try more of their menu.
of note: "complete dinner" - $2.50 added to  each entree for wonton soup and eggroll to accompany meal.
-----------------
second order we placed was for delivery Â
Lemon chicken - very good- not too twangy
Shrimp egg foo young - best I have had in many years.
b-b-que pork fried rice- not greasy.
good portions for the money.
Pleasant "Chinese" restaurant in a dull strip mall. Â Hot and sour soup was unusual (more cornstarch than normal and orangy in color) but tasted very good. Â An order of Singapore noodes was expertly prepared with a nice flavor and excellent pork. Â Sesame Chicken was very tasty as was the Orange Beef, which had just the right amount of spiciness. Â Friendly, pleasant service. Â Non-descript decor and no real attempt at authenticity, but very good at what it does. Â Menu states that dishes not on it can be requested.
