We have had dinned here before and enjoyed it. I made reservations for my wife and myself for valentines day. We arrived and our name had been written down wrong causing some problems. Then we where seated and informed everything on the menu was $30 with a glass of wine and surprise dessert! The menu was very limited. We asked if that was for both and sadly informed that $30 was per plate, what a surprise! I was not informed of this while making reservations. I think this is poor management and highway robbery for Crawfordsville. I will not complain before I receive my food so we made our complaints known and promptly found someplace else to dine. Thanks for screwing up my valentine Dinner.

Went there on Monon Bell.  No waiting.  Good food.  Good service.  Excellent, smooth, Margueritas.

Arrived for a late lunch and was pleased with the warm atmosphere.  The service was great.   The food was very pleasing in presentation and taste.  We both had salads but with different toppings ( salmon and crab ).  Very good but I would have loved to have had mixed greens rather than iceberg.  Still was good.  The salads came with a bruschetta side of bread that was yummy.  We did not realize that and had also ordered the deluxe grilled cheese sandwich which was melted mozzarella, onions, mushroom and green peppers on wheat bread.  It was really good too.  We will try this spot again but for dinner next time.  Thanks!

I went to Iron Gate Restaurant after finding out that the first restaurant I found on Yelp had closed a while back.

They had a nice awning and looking in the windows, it looked like a fine dining restaurant. Fortunately for me, it was 2:30 p.m. and nobody was there, so I didn't feel too bad about not being dressed up.

I ended up going with a chicken salad sandwich on a croissant, which came with potato chips. It wasn't bad and the price wasn't unreasonable, considering I can get the same thing in Indianapolis for the same price.

My waitress seemed a little rough around the edges at first, but was very attentive and I was served promptly, water was refilled promptly (especially important at a fine dining restaurant), and as I said, the food was good. Since I was going for a quick (and somewhat cheap) lunch, I didn't try the fancier items on the menu. But they did have a decent menu.

The decor of the place is nice, has a nice older feeling to it. Since I don't spend much time in Crawfordsville, I can't compare it to anything else in town, but it's definitely worth a try.

I took my girlfriend here for her birthday.  She was excited, as it was her first time.  We were given the option to sit anywhere we wanted.  At 7pm on a Saturday night.  The place was a ghost town!  Anyway, our waiter was obviously new.  He did a wonderful job though.  He was polite and attentive, though not overly so.

French onion soup came first, steaming with a large breadcrumb in the cup.  It was delicious, with a deep and mellow onion flavor.  Salads and bread were next.  The salad was iceberg with a bit of red cabbage and diced white onions.  There were carrot chips, but they were dried out.  I would liked to have seen romaine instead of iceberg, but it was an acceptable salad.  The French dressing was house made, I believe.  Very tangy, and not nearly as sweet as store-bought French.  A small half-loaf of warm french bread with butter was served on a wooden board.  The bread had a nice crust on the outside, and was very soft inside.  Very tasty.

My girlfriend's prime rib was excellent, though cooked just a bit more than what she had ordered.  That's always a tough thing to get just right in restaurants, anyway.  The beef was "melt in your mouth" tender, and sooo tasty.  Her baked potato was, well, a baked potato.  My chicken parmesan was interesting.  It was a large boneless chicken breast, towering high on the plate rather than being pounded flat as I expected.  It had a nice, light breading on it, and was cooked just right.  The chicken was very juicy and tender.  It sat on a bed of spaghetti, and the whole thing was topped with house made meat sauce.  It was excellent, and I look forward to having it again.  It was dark, with a complex and lightly sweet flavor.  For what we ordered and received, the bill was a fair amount.  In the 3 or 4 times I've eaten at the Iron Gate, I've been consistently impressed.  Two thumbs up :)

Rich menu - plenty of different types of food. I had their tuna sandwich; it was a little mushy (sturdier bread may have helped), and I ate most of the second half with a knife and fork. Dining companion had a burger and fries which he enjoyed. Good food temperatures, nice atmosphere for a Spring evening on the back porch, attentive service. Hope to come back when I return to C-ville.

Probably marked as being more of an elegant restaurant, the Iron Gate is a nice place to go to for a moderately priced meal. Actually, its probably one of the most expensive in town; however, the meals are good and there are plenty of items on the menu that you would not see anywhere else in Crawfordsville. They have the best wine selection but it does not go without saying that price is an issue. In fact, that goes for any drinks from the bar. The staff is polite and prompt and give excellent service. This is definitely a place that has a little more romance to it, far from Applebees.

I liked this place when I went to Wabash.  Yes, it was newly opened during my Wabash tenure, but the food was good and the decor was interesting.  I never had a problem with the service, and the food was always good...I said that, but it's important, so mentioning it twice is not a bad thing.  There used to be good drink specials, so if those are still around, be sure and get after it.

I feel bad about this, but I have to take the Iron Gate down to 4-stars. It's still a fine place, and it still might be among the very best in Crawfordsville. But I just can't justify giving a place 5 stars for no other reason than because I've developed low standards for the area.

Moreover, the beer selection is really pretty pitiful, matched only by the staff's lackluster awareness of this sad deficiency. When I went there the other day, for example, I ordered the "312 IPA" off the drink menu. After explaining that "IPA" meant "India Pale Ale" (it is a little sad that a veteran waitress at this place doesn't seem to have had to know the difference until now...), the waitress brought me a 312 Wheat. A minor mistake, but when I brought it to her attention, she went back and brought me a Goose Island IPA. In other words, though the menu clearly stated "312 IPA", Iron Gate only has a 312 Wheat and a Goose Island IPA.

This seems minor, but it is sad for three reasons (in ascending order of importance):

First, as the only 'fine' restaurant in town, it is sad that the Iron Gate can't do better with its beer selection.

Two, it doesn't say much for the clientele at this place (or for the IG's marketing) that this mistake didn't come up until now.

But most of all (three), there's really no excuse for a local restaurant not to go local. There are at least three breweries within an hour of this restaurant: Lafayette Brewing Company; Barley Island; Upland. So why go all the way to Chicago? This is the Hoosier State, and it would be nice to see a little Hoosier pride. Small town Indiana may very well go the way of the Dodo -- so I can't give a pass to a decent restaurant that doesn't do its part to help.
