Yum Yum Yum!! I love Jai-Yen 2!
I love their original location in lakeview, and was absolutely psyched to see they'd ventured west as well!
The bf and I consider this our default "what do you want for dinner?" place. They have a fabulous mix of traditional sushi and noodle dishes. We can get a wide array of everything - crab rangoon, fried rice, sushi rolls, and miso soup are all on our regular list. Spicy salmon maki? My favorite!!
Lastly, they have a little bitty lot next door, next to the BBQ place. I've never seen it full - convenient to stop in for dinner, or just pull in to pick up your takeout. Lovely!
I've been to this place twice and have been very pleased with my meals both time. I must say that there lunch special is a good deal- 2 good rolls (I'm not talking plain ol' California rolls here. I mean actual fancy rolls!) and miso soup for $8-$10. What's not to like?! I highlyly recommend the Snow Angel roll. Very yummy and a good choice for "intermediate" sushi eaters like myself who aren't ready for full on nigiri or sashimi quite yet. They also make a delicious calamari that's made with tempura batter. I'll be coming back again.
The staff is really nice and the restaurant is very cute. Parking is a little tight in the back, but hey, it's FREE parking, so I won't complain! I love that it's located in Avondale/ Logan Square neighborhood. There weren't a lot of quality sushi options in the area until Jai Yen opened a few months ago. It's a welcomed addition to a blossoming area. They also deliver and give 20% off your first online order.
Check this place out! It has great prices, good quality sushi, and a cute and friendly atmosphere!
I randomly purchased a boat load of $5 for $10 living social deals and I had one for this place, hoping to feed my love for Thai food. Excellent crab Rangoon. Super friendly gals working at the counter when I picked up food. The pad woonson was decent. I would be willing to check this place out again.
They have a small parking lot but parking is fairly easy on Belmont just east of the restaurant.
So Jai-Yen is my absolute favorite place to eat in all of Chicago, just writing this review and thinking about their crab ragoon is making my mouth water; I wish I was joking but I am not. Â The sushi is some of the freshest fish in all of Chicago and is definitely the most affordable for what you get. Â I was driving down Belmont and saw the new place and thought they had moved, but NO! Â It is Jai-Yen 2 and it is just as amazing! Â The servers here are not recognizable to the ladies and gentlemen I was used to at the Broadway location, and they were not my favorite, but the food was the best, as always. Â Gosh, now all they need to do is open in Orlando or start shipping me the crab ragoon, I am yet to find a comparison.
Review Source:This place is just terrible. Usually when you walk into a place and there's nobody inside that is a signal to run away which I should've done. We meet some  friends for lunch and it was New Year's Eve Day so I disregarded my instincts. We were the only people there for 1 1/2hrs. We ordered green tea which was served cold had to send back, ordered dumplings and edamame for apps which were the only two non fried items. They didn't have dumplings we found out n the edamame looked and tasted awful. We got the shrimp spring rolls which were probably microwaved. I ordered chicken pad tai and a rainbow roll. Both were plain and tasteless. I had to drown the pad tai in chili sauce to even stomach it. Don't go here this place should be closed.
Review Source:My fiancee and I came here a couple of days ago on a blustery, empty Tuesday night. Â There was only one other person here, someone getting takeout. Â I figured I'd skip the sushi, since it's never a good idea to get raw fish when there is no turnover.
I was wrong. Â My fiancee ordered a roll, Pad Thai, and gyoza. Â I figured what the hell, and ordered a roll also. Â Freaking awesome. Â The spicy tuna roll absolutely melted in our mouths. Â The Pad Thai was just as expected - but since Pad Thai is supposed to be dumbed-down comfort food, it was perfect for what it was. Â Gyoza was just OK. Â Service was prompt, our server very nice, and food came out quickly. Â At $50 for two people to thoroughly enjoy a satisfying meal, I left happy. Â We live in the neighborhood, and are happy to have a reliable sushi joint near us. Â We'll be back.
I am usually very skeptical of ordering sushi without seeing a place first. Â I've been reading reviews and looking over menu. Â I decided to try it and with a 20% first time online order I was ready to go. Â I ordered crab rangoon, crunchy spicy tuna, and cashew chicken (cause everyone was mentioning it). Â I love crab rangoon and this is hands down one of my new places for it. Â It was deep fried perfectly-light and still crispy! Â The sushi roll was good, but I want try some other rolls before I make this my go to place. Â The cashew chicken is amazing. Â My only complaint is that there was no rice with the cashew chicken.
Review Source:I had the chance to visit this location for lunch in the past few weeks. I had the drunken chicken which was good. The only issue I had was that for two people, two meals, two cokes, and it was carry-out $30+ seems a little high for what you got. I will probably be back since I work near by but not sure I would go back for dinner. I am happy that it opened where it did since that area needs more restaurant options.
Review Source:I eat here all the time. Â Yes, part of it is because its one of the few restaurants close to where I work but also because I've never had a disappointing dish.
My FAVE is their cashew chicken. Nobody does it as well as they do. The vegetables are always cooked to perfection and the sauce is great - a little sweet, a little savory.
Their sushi is great too and a lot of rolls are pretty cheap. Â Unlike some other reviewers, I've never felt ill after eating. Â
The place isn't beautiful or anything but I really only go to pick up my food. Â The people are always friendly and I've never had any of my food turn out wrong.
I love it! Cheap yet good.
I dont know what Jai-yen means, but i hope it translates to something like YES OK DELICIOUS YAAAAAY! i live nearby and I order delivery from here an almost shameful amount. The same woman delivers my food each time too; in fact, she said " good seeing you again!" this last time. But there's a reason I keep coming back (or I guess, keep making her come back, bless her heart)! The noodle dishes are pretty solid-- great spicy udon, delicious yakisoba, and hearty seafood udon soup. I haven't had much sushi from here, but the few rolls I have ordered are really good. Delivery has always been pretty quick and the food is fresh, piping hot, ready to go straight into my belly. A friend and I ate at the actual restaurant once. The food was on point as usual, and the service was almost disturbingly attentive (is there some rule that every sip of water needs to be replaced???) but nice. The only weird thing was that the waitress seemed to be rushing us to go (brought check but we wanted to get dessert and tea after dinner, kept checking in every few minutes) even though it was a very quiet night and well before closing time. Â Maybe she was new and nervous? In any case, this place is great for delivery!
Review Source:we ordered sunshine maki, by the beach, sweet potato, baby bear & crazy soba noodle.
all of them were excellent, the best i ever have: good food with reasonable price.
service was nice and attentive maybe because they don't have much diner (but still quite a lot of take out customer as i observed).
this place is byob with no charged. i do recommend this place.
Its our first time to try the sushi at this place, me and husband was disappointed because we ordered three sushi and miso soup. Each sushi has 5 small rolls only, super small serving! We're still super hungry after. I wonder why so little. Normal awesome sushi place has at least 6-8 rolls per order. Its only $7 per order. I thought the price was really great but you get what you paid for! Not coming back even if its our neighborhood sushi place.
Review Source:I just dined here a few hours ago. I've been to the Lakeview location twice, and I really like the food and employees there. I was in the area and stopped by. I ordered my favorite dish, the Spicy Udon. This is my favorite vegetarian dish. The texture of the tofu is pretty great, almost "meaty". It's SO GOOD! My boyfriend had the steamed shumai (which could be fried) and I had the tamago sushi. I didn't find the seats among the windows to be comfortable at all, as there was no support. Pillows could remedy this. Anyway, David ordered the sushi platter and the fish wasn't fresh, especially the mackerel. It was grey and hard. I didn't find the service to be very friendly. I tried to speak and say "hello" in Thai to them several times (I am Thai!), but they were not responsive at all. I blatantly said "good-bye" and they didn't say anything. I mean, really? They also accidentally charged $10 extra on the credit card. Thank goodness I caught this as I was pitching in on the tip. Jaiyen is good for Thai food, but not so much for sushi. Service could be more outgoing and friendlier. I am pretty disappointed by this place. I prefer the other location.
Review Source:Had dinner on 8/11/2012 and it was delicious. Â We had the edamame appetizer first, no complaints there but they do give you enough for 5 people. Â Yakisoba with beef was excellent, couldn't stop eating it. Â Super white tuna and salmon nigiri both very good. Â The crunchy spicy tune maki and shrimp tempura maki with unagi sauce were both perfect. Â Service was prompt and attentive. Â The decor is sparse, but the place is new and will probably be improved. Â I would definitely go back.
Review Source:I have amended my previous review and would like to say I strongly endorse this restaurant. I live nearby and eat there once a week if not more. The quality has increased greatly over the last 6 months. The prices are comparable to other sushi places (plus they have great Thai too). And the service is fantastic: friendly & prompt.
Review Source:so far, it's great! I just went there for the first time today. I ordered Valcano under the Chef Specials. There are plenty of 2 seating tables that can easily be pushed together for larger groups. There is bar seating too! There is a lunch special menu for 11am - 3:30pm. Pretty decent options. The girls serving were friendly, all food was great! Good pop club music overhead. There is parking behind the building that The Pork Shoppe shares. Add it to the growing Avondale neighborhood restaurants, we don't need to walk any further. Please check it out! opens 11am to 10pm. we had 1 sushi roll, 2 maki, edemame, 2 miso soups....all about $30.
