Love this place. I go here quite a bit when I'm in Shrewsbury. My last visit was 12-8-12.
The bar is huge, and oriented like a giant square. Lots of TV's accessible from all angles (including tables) to watch the game. Nice sports bar in that sense.
They always have wicked cool drink specials too. I think this month is all Harpoon Drafts (they have IPA, Winter Warmer, and the cider) are only $3/pint. You can't go wrong there. They also make a pretty mean old-fashioned. If you're into those like I am.
The food here is surprisingly tasty. It's very good 'pub-fare,' although I think the meals we got Saturday were a cut-above standard pub fare.
I went here with a party of 4 at around 8PM. They always have great dinner specials. I especially recommend the seafood specials. It's my go-to when I come because they're reasonably priced and I have yet to be disappointed. I've had the Fish&Chips before, and the Fisherman's platter...all of which were fried to perfection and delicious.
Saturday we branched out more. I ordered the baked-stuffed sole with mashed potatoes and asparagus. Others in my party ordered the surf&turf special, the ribeye steak, and the grilled reuben sandwich.
The baked stuffed sole was very good. They stuff it with a seafood stuffing that was equally tasty. I could tell when I was eating a chunk of scallop, or piece of fish when I bit in. The sole was tender, juicy, and cooked perfectly also. They topped it with a delicious lemon-butter that truly completed the dish. The grilled asparagus with garlic worked great as a side. The mashed potatoes I was disappointed with. Kind of tasted like potato buds. I'd go with the baked potato next time.
The surf and turf was awesome. Stuffed with the same seafood stuffing, it was also beautiful and cooked perfectly. The steak tips were good as well. Baked potato was better than the mashed.
Ribeye steak was good too. Â The side was onion rings. Again, I'd stick with baked potato.
Other order was the reuben. If you're a restaurant and you screw up a reuben, you need to hang up your hat. The reuben was good. But again...hard to screw this one up.
Oh yeah, great service too with friendly, attentive waitstaff who bring food & drink in a timely manner
Overall this place is great. I love coming here to eat, drink, and be merry. If nothing else, come for the cheap drinks. Wicked good stuff here.
I hate this place, yet I go there sometimes due to a meetup group that does trivia there (which is usually hard to hear because their speaker system is awful). Â The food is pretty consistently terrible with the exception of their salads. Â
I finally felt the need to post my feelings about this place after a really annoying experience last night (only stopped by because we were in the area). Â At 12:30, the bartender asked if he wanted more drinks as ours were empty. Â We said sure, at which point he told us it was last call. Â Fine, sure. Â Within a few minutes of getting our drinks, a bouncer told us that they were closing and to finish our drinks. Â Okay, we were hurrying (I've worked in restaurants and know it sucks to wait, but other people were in there too). Â Within a couple of minutes, 2 more guys separately told us to finish our drinks and leave, and they did it very rudely. Â Why would they serve us large beers if they wanted us to leave within 5 minutes?!? Â I would have rather just left than be forced to chug a drink (I wasn't going to leave it since I had already paid for it). Â I just looked at their website and it says that they're open until 1 on Fridays, but they kicked us out well before then. Â They need to start doing last calls well before they actually want people to leave (or give fair warnings that they want people immediately out) and seriously work on their service skills. Â These people were such complete jerks about a situation they created, and it's difficult to convey here. Â I don't think that I've ever left a restaurant or bar so angry before. Â This place sucks!
DON'T GO! I called ahead of time and spoke with "AMY" I asked her if they can play the afternoon baseball game. She stated, "yea, we have all the games" When I got there, I was told that they do not have the MLB package! How can you call yourself a sports bar and not have baseball? STAY AWAY!
Review Source:I went for dinner Friday June 29, 2012 and stayed to watch the band, "The Shakers" I am very pleased with the appetizers and dinner. We had nachos and spinach/artichoke dip for our appetizer. I had a Cesar Salad for dinner. The dip was served in a timely manner and at a good temperature. It stayed warm throughout the meal as well and was very tasty. The Cesar salad was also a good portion size with just enough dressing and cheese. Delicious!
What I wanted to mention that I enjoyed the most was The Shakers band as your entertainment. They had so much energy and are a very talented group of guys! I really hope you have them back again. I would come for dinner and stay the whole evening again if you had them back.
I am looking forward to coming back again some time soon.

I came in here earlier tonight looking for a burger. Â I walked in and noticed all the bartenders were shiny-faced and all the customers in the less than half-full bar (at 6 pm!), were wiping sweat off their brows. Â It was at least 85 degrees in this place, and when I asked about the AC, I got some weird explanation about the electricity being run by the motel next door????
I was so hungry that I stayed for a cheeseburger. Â This place would have gotten 1 star if it weren't for that burger. Â Perfect medium rare, big, juicy, with wonderful grilled flavor. Â Nice homemade chips, too.
After I devoured my burger, I wanted a nice, cold crisp glass of Sauvignon Blanc to cool off. Â After 10 minutes of waiting, I was informed they had been out for weeks. Â Damn weirdest thing I had ever heard. Â What kind of a bar doesn't stock that????
A great burger just isn't enough to be successful. Â This place needs to get it's act together big time.
The place was dimly lit in the afternoon. Tables were sticky from years of use and need a scrub down.
Waitress was prompt with menus and drinks.
The drinks were watered down and full of ice.
I had the Mac and cheese with chicken. Chicken was grilled and sliced for bite size. The chicken was too burnt. There was minimal crumbs (perfect for me). Cheesy and a large portion. Side of garlic bread.
Steak tips portion was also large. Side of mashed potatoes and mixed veggies. Slightly overcooked but juicy.
Mr Bethany wanted a good burger -- so we revisited JJ's. He had a fabulous BBQ burger, cooked medium rare. We had to ask for hotter French fries but that was the only flaw.
I chose the 8 ounce steak tips, cooked medium with Teriyaki sauce, rice pilaf, & Brussels sprouts. I was SO happy that they offered Brussels sprouts as a side -- and they were sauteed and delicious. I also had the best rice pilaf that I have ever tasted at a restaurant. My rice pilaf was full of sauteed carrots, scallions, and garlic. So tasty!
JJ's is truly a destination when you want to go casual!
There's the wryly cute dive that feels sketchy-cool for no apparent reason. Everyone loves it specifically because it's the wretched old man on the block.
Then there's the false dive that opens with chipped paint and emphatically promotes PBR and Tecate ($6) with the someecards stylings of retired bike messengers.
Then there's this awkward in-between that occupies the standalone building in an Econolodge parking lot, wearing a new, more plain sign over the older new one.
WTF is in store? Bethany B says good things (read: ice cold beer and a juicy burger) and I listen to Bethany B. So in we go!
At first glance, you're struck by the supreme absence of character. Plywood paneling, everybooths, a small bar and a crane game. Then you notice rear passage to a second room - a wondrous room wallpapered with plasmas and LEDs, projections and Amstel Light promos, joy and pain.
My french dip was decent, her bacon cheeseburger rocked faces off, the drinks ran average and the lovelies twerkin the bar handed out Blow Pops. Excellent! Feeling interactive? Check the hidden corner to find a Wheel of Fortune pinball, or they'll supply you with a Buzztime box for unending pub trivia.
The food registers middle of the road, but for a group to watch the game or make their own, JJ's is surprisingly (and I do mean surprisingly!) well-equipped to keep you entertained. Entertained and lubricated. Entertained because of lubricant? Most likely.
To be fair, went here on a friday afternoon with no sports on the teli. This place is a giant sports bar and has a stage for bands. They have some boothes and floating tables that are most likely cleared for the night crowd. Food was ok, and the beer was cold. This place is a night spot. Going out for lunch, not so much.
Review Source:We'd like to have given JJ's a more complete review, but we didn't actually have a chance to eat there. We visited on a Sunday night in February. Knowing that Sunday is a slow night and that we were driving 10 miles to get to JJ's,, we called ahead to be sure the kitchen would be open and were told that it closed at 10 p.m.
When we arrived at 9:40, the bartender told us that the manager had shut down the kitchen just a few minutes before. We spoke to the manager and were told that we could still get a "few appetizers and sandwiches." Not exactly worth a 10-mile drive.
Fortunately, there was an Uno's just up the road, where they bent over backwards to please us.
I usually go on wednesdays so I am not sure about the music, but I have never had a bad meal at JJ's and I have had almost everything on the menu. Quality food and a friendly staff make this one of my favorites in the area. Plenty of room with seperate bar area from dining area and tons of TV's to watch any sporting event you wish.
Review Source:Came here on a Thursday night for the $2 margaritas and some live music on the deck. Because of a thunderstorm, the music was inside and so were we.
First - let me just get this out of the way - the margaritas were disgusting. I honestly wouldn't pay 50 cents for another one.
The food was fine. We split some nachos, a bacon cheeseburger with fries, and a piece of chocolate cake. Everything was fine - nothing special - but decent bar food. Portions were big and prices were low.
The atmosphere was great! There was a guy doing classic rock covers with his guitar, which we enjoyed quite a bit.
Since we live right down the street, we'll probably come back here for beer, apps, and music, but I don't think I'd go out of my way to go to JJ's.
They also have trivia on Thursday nights, which looked like it could be fun...except nobody was playing!
The food here is consistently good ever since the new owner took over a couple years back. Â Good wings, pasta and apps. Â I had a burger recently that was cooked perfectly med rare with a nice crust on the outside and hot, salty homemade chips. Â Professional and friendly waitstaff certainly doesn't hurt, either.
Review Source:Went just for a Back Seat Lover - Pearl Jam Tribute show. Â
Beers were cold. Â Band sounded great. Â Crowd was really into it.
Parking lot sucked due to the snow but it was also really busy.
Can't comment on food but as I said, bartenders were on top of it, beers were cold, and who can't love a place with a dedicated keno girl!?!!?
So as a spot for a live show - I like it.
it's not rocket science to walk in and figure out that this place is not going to knock your socks off. Â It's next to a dumpy motel. Â With that said, we just ate there recently with http://restaurant.com coupons and it was worth it. Â We stuck to simple fare and it was tasty. Â Burger for me and fish and chips for him. Â They have live music a lot which we also saw and that adds to the experience. Â It's worth a shot and we would go back. Â They have keno and lots of tv's with decent food.
Review Source:I really wanted to go with 4 stars and I reluctantly downgrade to a 3-star experience trying to account for how most people will probably find JJ's. Â Allow me to explain...
If they could improve one thing - wake up the staff, give them happy pills, something to make them realize that there's a 20% tip on the other end of tray stop. Â Who knows? Â Maybe the regulars tip like shit.
If everyone went to JJ's for the same reasons I do, I'd give a 4-star rating without thinking twice. Â The inconsistent service which tends to be on the slow side doesn't fall short of my expectations. Â I go to JJ's to watch a 2 or 3-hour game or annually for a 12-man fantasy football draft - in either situation, it's a lot of appetizers over the course of hours, not minutes - it doesn't hurt to be paced at all.
So if you're NOT going to sit down and eat dinner - it's GREAT! Â Otherwise it's still worth a visit for a relaxed meal and catching a game without having to turn your neck (a ridiculous number of big HD TVs).
Let me say that the boneless buffalo tenders are a must (same as JP's in Westborough - love 'em!), nachos with chicken are excellent, along with the sampler platter are all great to have while catching a game.
The steak tips are a popular choice (I think it's the one meal I've never had there).
Some good entertainment and specials throughout the week adds value. Â Kids under 12 eat free on Weds. nights with the purchase of an entree - but again, right there you're running the risk of kids + slow service = bad combination. Â Something to be prepared for, rather than thinking it's a done deal.
If you're strictly looking for a bar experience, it's better than the 3-star rating. Â It's all about expectations. Â As another review mentioned - no wine list. Â Pitchers of beer they have. Â Get it?
If you are running anything that portends to be a restaurant, service is key! There were ~20 of us in the dining section on a Friday night (reservations made) and the waitresses were worse than terrible. Took 15-20 minutes after ordering a drink to get it delivered . . . more than a few folks gave up and walked up to the bar to order a drink. Messed up orders (2 or 3 waitresses waited on our one long table). It took ~10 minutes after asking for my bill (individual bills were requested by everyone) to actually get my bill . . . they forgot to charge me for something and I told her (one waitress took my drink order and another took the food order, apparently they don't talk to one another) . . . she went back to add it to the bill and it took another 15 minutes to get the corrected bill . . . then more than 10 minutes before she was finally flagged down to take my payment (CC). It just took forever to get out of the place and I wouldn't return. The food itself was OK pub food but the lack of service made the entire experience horrible.
Review Source:Not even a sports bar imo..... just a bar with some tvs, plenty of locals and white high heels with shorts kinda crowd.
Been here a few time and here is the one redeeming factor: Get an occasional decent local band to play. Sadly I have never seen a band play to a decent size crowd there.
OK food.
Confused and slow, but friendly, wait-staff.
Sour wine.
Decent prices, though
Certainly not a 5-star experience, but the price isn't all that high either. My wife and I were in the mood for wine, and even though there was no wine list (house wines, in other words), we decided to order a Shiraz and a Cabernet Sauvignon. My Cab was so-so, but her Shiraz was sour. I understand that most people who frequent the place are more beer- than wine-drinkers, but it was still pretty bad. We sent her wine back and got a margarita instead.
I had to ask for water 3 times before we got it. My daughter got served club soda on her second drink instead of water ("Dad, this water is spicy and awful!"). But the food was OK: their steak-tips are very good, and cooked nicely, and the price on all the plates was decent.
Not a place I'd go for a "fine dining" experience, but then again... it's a Sports Bar.
If you are a boston sports fan and are in the area looking for a bar to watch the game, look no further. Â This restaurant has over 30 flat-screen TVs, with 20 in the bar area hanging circle-style so you can get a great view from any seat. Â Great selection of beer, lots of stuff on tap and a large array of hard-liquor for mixed drinks.
They have a very large menu -- every sub/sandwich/burger under the sun, great appetizers including different hot-levels of boneless buffalo wings to your classic american restaurant (with surprisingly tasty spaghetti and meatballs). They offer specials every day and their haddock tips are not to be missed!
Their wait-staff is very friendly and social, and the service overall is good. Â You can play Keno, NTN online gaming, STUMP trivia once a week, quarter-pool tables or just sit back and watch the HD sports games. Â It still amazes me how many bars in the Worcester area are LACKING in the HD dept, this bar is NOT one of those.
I also have to mention the bands they have on the weekends, a variety of local talent, ranging from country to U2 -- with no cover.
I've been here about 4 or 5 times when we're up visiting friends. Â The bar definitely has its share of regulars, which keeps at least a certain level of fun in the place. Â
Only ate here once and the food was just okay, but this is a place that you either go to watch a game or for karaoke on Thursday night, not to find fine dining, and in that regard, it measures up.
Great if you love Keno.
Some people really like this place. Â I like it OK, but I don't rush there. The TV's are nice & the menu is abundant and varied. Â They used to have tableside magic, not sure if they do anymore. Â That was really fun. Â I've never had bad service, sometimes it's slow, but they are always friendly.
