Cheap drinks but cover at the door. Â Whooomp! Â When I want to go to the bar at the beach I want something more low key. Â It's a low grade dance club too. Â They do have bands that play although the bands I've heard haven't been that good but you can;t expect much for a beach bar / dance club.
If you took Joe Pop's off of LBI it would easily be a 2 star bar.
Let me break down this review. If based on restaurant environment alone, Joe Pop's would get one star. Based on food, it'd get 3 to 3 and a half. If you choose to "pop" (yes, pun intended) in here, know what to expect. The food is greasy and wonderful in a divey way. The tables are as greasy as the food. Seriously, there are crumbs stuck on some of the furniture that would probably take a hazmat team to clean off. Get the onion straws-- you'll gain ten pounds, but you'll be happy. If you're a clean freak, bring Purell or stay home. If you're looking for a more upscale dining experience-- what the heck are you doing going to a place called Joe Pop's? Chill out, get a beer, and relax.
Review Source:I have been to Ship Bottom, NJ only once before (and most likely my last visit), so I cannot really say more than what I can say about the first time being at Joe Pop's. My guests and I initially tried going to a different bar, but honestly, this isn't the most hip and happening town at night. There were hardly any decent bars open past 9pm, but Joe Pop's seemed like the most inviting and interesting from the outside. It's a quite spacious interior with a large mixed crowd. There was a live band and a dance floor. The music, I have to say, was pretty awful. I just couldn't get myself to dance because of how bad the music was. The weird crowd at this place also made it worse. It was an odd mix of people, definitely not the type of crowd I would choose to be around with. In addition, young guys kept hitting on me as much as I gave them the look to back off. The food and drinks here, however, were not bad at all. All in all, definitely would not come back to this place unless forced to, but if you are looking for a decent bar in this area that is opened late (meaning until 10pm), then give Joe Pop's a try.
Review Source:So we got down to LBI a little early as we usually do (rather be ON the island than sitting in Parkway traffic) and we needed some place to eat. Our tradition has always been to eat at Woodies, but it was PACKED today. Â What to do, what to do...let's try Joe Pop's! Â We say every year we want to check it out, so we finally did.
Very, VERY happy we made the decision. Both my wife and I needed a beer desperately and they had Blue Moon (for her) and Landshark on tap. Great! Â Kids went with normal fare-grilled chicken wrap for my daughter and chix fingers for my son. Â I started with a dozen steamers in white wine and butter (OMG, GREAT start to vacation! Inplan on having clams every day I'm here) and my wife and I had the crab cake sandwich. Normally, not my first choice as it can be overpriced and too small for the price. NOT at Joe Pop's. Served with a roasted red pepper aioli on a large bun-the crab cake didn't get lost in the bread at all-thing was as big as my son's face and had very little 'binder'. Absolutely delicious.
Though we never eat at the same place twice while we're here, I will absolutely add this as a go-to restaurant!
Don't think our waitress was having the best day, but she was pleasant enough. Normally wouldn't give a bar/restaurant 4 stars on the first try, but this was a great lunch.
Stumbled into Joe Pop's during the week of 4th of July. Â It's a huge location that can house live music, a huge bar, pool, bocci ball, and fun basketball shooting games. Â Drinks weren't outrageously priced, games were fun, but everyone there was a creep. Â It's not very ritzy or anything but it'll get the job done for a beach bar. Â They offer bar snacks.
Review Source:This place is a scam. Do not go here. They over charge you at the door for the crappiest food, crowd, music, and ambiance I've ever experienced. We called ahead to see what the cover would be and they said 10. When we got there two minutes later they said 20. There were four of us. We're all young and were dressed nicely and they out right refused to honor the fact that we were told 10 on the phone. 80 bucks for four people three hours before the band goes on before drinks and apps? The place was dead inside and they were so rude. We ended up going to Daddy Os rooftop bar which doesn't have a cover, plays good music, an has a really fun crowd. If you ask me don't bother with joe pops. They charge manhattan prices for an armpit of dive bar.
Review Source:This place pretty much sucks. The only redeeming quality is that there was a good crowd. Otherwise, it really sucked. The food sucked. The band sucked. The drinks sucked. The place looks like a high school gym with a bar slapped down with no thought as to where or how to set the place up.
Review Source:Food is mediocre and service is poor. To waitress defense they have tables both inside and out. Â The outdoor hostess - instead of helping out (I do understand that it isn't her official job to do so) sits at the front reading her book and chatting up various employees from the back who wonder out front to 'hang.'
Review Source:When I want to get away from my manasquan beach house mates and the d-bag new yorkers that pollute the jersey shore bars, I hit up a spot where true jersey shore townies congregate. Â
Joe Pop's...its been around like forever.
Cheap beers, bands that play an eclectic mix of covers, and lots of locals....L.O.C.A.L.S.
MTV won't be sullying this beach bar. Â Go back to the meatpacking district you dirty new yorkers.
During the day, the food is horrible, the service is slow, and the drinks are weak. Â At night, those same weak drinks become expensive, there is a $15 cover for the same 80's cover bands each week, they give you mixed drinks in plastic cups, and shots in plastic sauce cups. Â There is nothing appealing about this bar and quite frankly if it weren't for the fact that there is no other bar in the area (The Porthole is a joke) then this place would have been out of business day 1. Â If you are on LBI and looking for a good night out, visit either the Marlin or Sea Shell, at least at those places it's worth the expense.
Review Source:This place doesn't quite stack up to the best beach bars I've frequented. Â I'd put this place a tic below most of my favorite haunts in Dewey, including the Rusty Rudder and the gold standard: The Starboard. Â The major difference between a place like the Starboard and Joe Pop's is that Joe Pop's charges a cover. Â Oh, and no flip flops? Â Don't get that at all. Â Other than those gripes this is a decent spot. Â Good bartenders, stiff drinks, and decent cover bands. Â Feel free to perform an air guitar kick to a Bon Jovi cover or grope a sun-wrinkled cougar.
Review Source:This place is not bad - you have to start paying the cover at 8:30 or 9:00, the bands never start before 10:30. The drink specials are decent. There is a good amount of space to dance. There are pool tables and video games. I can't complain too much. However, getting dinner at the bar is a huge hassle. The bartenders don't want to be bothered taking food orders so you are forced to pay two different checks. I will return here but I think it was much more fun a couple of years ago.
Review Source:I was charged $10 to walk in the door 5 minutes before 9pm. Had anything exciting happened between 9 and 10, maybe I'd give this place another notch on the ratings. The initial bar service was friendly & attentive, but really - what's with the plastic cups? Glass bottles are served to the drunkest of drunks, so why not give the hard liquor paying customers a glass? Is the only reason because it's summer season? This has always bothered me about any bar handing me my Bacardi in plastic, not just Joe Pop's.
In spite of the above mentioned, the local cover band Speakeasy, amazed the few patrons there with their seamless transition from favorite covers to 80s chart toppers. I had hoped for some Pat Benatar, but a 6 year old Outkast song mixed in with CCR's best hit from the late 60s is hard to pull off. But Speakeasy did it. The bartender had mentioned the band "tonight" (FYI: it was a Thursday) would be good, but they were exceptional.
I'll go back, but how do early do I need to get there before being charged?
I been going to Joe Pops for years now. It's always a good time. The cover bands are fun and the $1 bud specials when you can get them are awesome!!! The bartenders are cool and buy back if you stick with the same bartender. The place is pretty large with 2 bars, pool tables and a juke box. The womens bathroom is ughhh- very hot and sweaty, but when youre drunk you dont care. Get there before 9:30 to beat the cover, you will catch a bunch of middle aged drunks singing kareoke which is always hilarious! I cant wait for summer!
Review Source:I don't want to insult any of the fine people of Ship Bottom, NJ who may read this review at some point, but you don't exactly live in a really happening town. Â Unlike some of the other towns that populate the Jersey shore, this place isn't exactly crawling with drinking places. Â We passed one other bar on our walk to Joe Pop's, and it looked like the kind of place that non-locals weren't exactly welcome to go into. Â So, when we got to the door, I was fully expecting to pay some sort of cover.
But $15? Â This is a joke right? Â I like bars where I can have multiple cold beverages for $15, not where it costs that much to get in the door. Â Luckily, a couple of the guys in our group are Jedi and out of nowhere $15 per person turned into $10 each just for the guys. Â I paid and then a couple of my wonderful female friends who got in for free picked up a drink or two. Â Now that I've spent two paragraphs blabbering about the cover, let's get to the actual bar.
Joe Pop's has a ton of space, pool tables and a decent sized stage for live music. Â We got there an hour or so before the band was set to start, and the place was pretty much empty. Â But once the mighty Mr. Caboose (yeah, you read that right, the band's name was Mr. Caboose) took the stage, the place was packed with people of all ages. Â Yes, ALL ages. Â From probably minutes past their 21st birthday to the cusp of Medicare and in between. Â My favorite was the old guy wearing a white bandanna who was dancing like a maniac and doing splits. Â Joe Pop's has its Cougar contingent as well if that's your thing. Â We stayed until close and the rare combination of sun, alcohol and yet another band Jersey shore band that plays Laid, I was actually dancing.
Drink prices were decent, the bar was well staffed, we all had a great time and I moved my feet in a dancing type motion. Â I can't give it 5 stars though, because the lead singer had pierced nipples. Â Not cool.
P.S. Â To the girl who had vodka/cranberry spilled on your white purse while you weren't looking, yeah that was me. Â I got bumped, sorry about that. Â But bringing a white purse to a Jersey shore bar probably wasn't your smartest decision either.
Joe Pop's is great for a night of drinking and dancing.
The live cover bands are great, especially The Nerds and The Benjamins. Like the true Jersey Shore bar that it is, you're bound to be hit on by a guy with a blowout, or make out with a stranger while dancing. Hey man, stuff happens.
Make sure to get in early (I believe they start charging a cover at 10?) and make sure you're ready to dance.
definite fun times.. thursday gets a little insane with all the specials.... and theres all the touristy girlies that like to come through. And who doesnt like to throw down hard... The bands rotate every couple weeks and if your feeling risky theres more bars around... Oh and its the shore so you can wear sandals if you'd like.
Review Source:Probably one of the funnest nights I had there on Thursday night when the cover band The Nerds played-amazing cover band (though ten bucks is WAY too much for a cover band!) that did Weezer, Def Leoppard, the Safety Dance, Boheminian Rhapsody, Ride the Lightening, etc.
In between sets, the DJ played top 40 dance and hip-hop and made a dance floor where men and women actually danced!
A large space, filled with ages to underage to like 55 all ready to party.
People were here to have fun-do it! But only when the Nerds are playing...
