If you can go somewhere else, go. this place cant even make an eggs benny. And if you dare tell them you might hurt their feelings and risk ridiculously bad customer service. Its pathetic how offended they get. There is a great place about a mile away called Niles Grill. Give them your buisness or Bakers Square.
Review Source:Went here last weekend because of a sudden craving for pancakes.
Waitress seemed like she was pissed off, food was dry and tasteless (I could barely swallow the pancakes).
I've been here a few times last year but don't remember it being this bad...
Oh well. Â Guess no more late night pancakes for me from here.
I was looking for a nice place to have breakfast in the Park Ridge area, and a person at the Ace Hardware on Northwest Highway recommended Kappy's. Â The waitress was very good, and my buttermilk pancakes were perfectly prepared. Â The sausage patties were out of this world. Â Can't wait to return to this place for another fine meal.
Review Source:Eeewwww.
For real, guys. For what I thought was a respectable restaurant that seems to be somewhat popular and have a constant weekend crowd? I can't imagine how this place manages.
So. It's day 1 of family road trip. My brothers want breakfast food, but don't want to wait to hit the Cracker Barrel halfway to Wisconsin. So, Kappy's, they say! I've never been, and neither has mom, so sure. Right off the bat the employees were rude and unfriendly. We walked in and were basically ignored but what I guess was the hostess.
Anyways. Forever later, we are seated. Our waitress is practically nonexistant. The food was bland and tasteless. Not exactly what I'd consider a variety, either.
I don't even like Cracker Barrel and I would rather have waited the 45 minutes down the expressway. Skip it, especially on a weekend morning when the crowd is insane.
I like George. Â He's really a good guy. Â And i respect the fact he is a hard worker and likes to help people.
But for a guy with culinary experience who has cooked in some decent kitchen, oy vey.
There is no innovation in his menu.. None. Plates, Cups, Booth, as well are as they were in 1994.
His prices are on par with Omega or maybe 10% less, but the flavor, portion, food quality, and presentation are considerably better at OMEGA (Golf Rd)
George has young kids and needs to work and earn for plenty more. Â Given that, he needs to stop rely on Niles' aging senior population and try to fresh up the look, and feel of his restaurant, and make the menu better.
Too conservative.
We came here a few weeks ago with some good friends. I can't recall what anyone else had, but I had the ox tail stew special and it was wonderful. It was so wonderful that I brought home an order for my Mom. She loved it too. I'm ashamed to say I finished up her leftovers the next day LOL. Shame on me. It really did taste homemade.
Now that we have been here, I am sure we will be back. Â I will try and pay closer attention to what my dinner partners are eating. It might be a challenge however, if I have the ox tail stew again.
Awesome place! Very friendly and helpful. I've only had breakfast here and it's always delicious. Food is cooked right and never makes you feel sick like a lot of other places. I usually try to wait to go around 11 so I can get their vanilla muffins which are awesome! Please serve the muffins earlier! That would be my only suggestion.
Review Source:Once upon a time...I lived in the northwest burbs. I would stop here occasionally and always liked the food and service. Recently, after taking Mom to O'hare, Partner and I meandered our way home passing through the old haunts. I chose Kappy's for breakfast and we were both quite pleased with the choice. The staff is friendly and attentive. Apart from the issue of not having the ingredients for my first choice, our experience was flawless. The menu is enormous (I don't know how they can stock the inventory for the whole thing.) For those of you in the area, there's no need to hesitate to visit.
Review Source:Oh Kappy's, how I love thee. Let me Yelp the ways!
This is an old school diner, chock full of career waitresses, gregarious managers, and old folks who you know have been coming here since Nixon was President. Or whenever it started. I always get the breakfast croissant - - - egg, cheese, meat (I get bacon) all melded together on a really lovely, soft croissant. Just delicious. Hash browns are great with a bit of salt or ketchup. Love them.
Pigs in a blanket are good, the skillets are delicious, basically, any of the breakfast items are great. Haven't had lunch/dinner here, but brunch, they've got covered. If you like good diner food and enjoy these kinds of old-fart places (which I do - - - I count myself among the aforementioned old farts), go here. Also, they have pancakes with *bacon* in them. What the what!
I was hoping this place would be like a SoCal like Norms breakfast joint. Instead it's just meh....
I love dirty hold in the wall breakfast joints but I was not impressed and left here feeling a little disappointed. The service wasn't very good either. I've been here a couple times and we don't have a winner here.
Perhaps in his hay day it was the spot. Now it's just a great location with a cool breakfast joint look but it's just severely lacking in the food and service.
Sorry Kappy's ... I wanted to like you but guess your still in biz from the blue hair regulars and the location you have... Up your game please...
Take a pass. I would never eat at a place like this in Morton Grove, but we were in the area for something else. Places like this are the reason that chain restaurants are so successful and prevalent in the suburbs -- this was just a bad, expensive meal. Everything was edible, and the soup was excellent, but the breakfasts and the hamburger I had were pretty awful. I asked for a medium burger and it was cooked super dry. The lettuce on the hamburger had that rubber bands taste that shows up when you've kept it too long. The fries were under-cooked and floppy. The bread basket was good; the vanilla muffins are delicious. The waitstaff were all very nice.
Review Source:Yes a traditional Greek breakfast pancake restaurant. I have been to a million of them in my day. However I am the guy that always likes to order the Turkey Melt sandwich.
For some reason I have notice this forgotten sandwich slowly falling off menus over the years at other restaurants. Rather then look to see if Kappy's sold Turkey Melts, I just asked for it. Call it blind luck, the server without hesitation or fear took my order.
Not only did my server excel my expectations, she is a mind reader. Had I known Kappy's serves skin on fries I would have ask for a side of Thousand Island dressing for dipping. To my surprise she brought me some without me even asking for it.........WOAH!
A classic Greek diner with a 16 page menu, the kind that makes you wonder how the food can possibly be good when they have everything ranging from London broil to stir fry to veal parmigiana. Â I'm always skeptical with places like this, because if you specialize in nothing, how can you make things special? Â Kappy's does it though - their breakfasts, croissant sandwiches, soups, and greek chicken are all great. Â It's extremely popular with the senior set, so get there early. Â No, wait. Â Get there after 5pm and you're good to go!
Review Source:What a DUMP - thought it would be Ok for General Duty Breakfast, was I wrong.
OK RULE 1 WE NOW COOK WITH FIRE SERVE HOT FOOD.
Should have known since the average age of the diners in the place is 75 and Death. Â
1. The owner comes over the loudspeaker to inform the place that they won a on-line rating. Woo Hoo
2. Coffee weak very weak - Retirement Home/ Hospital Weak.
3. Sent Food back because it was COLD when delivered to the table.
WHEN retunred from the Micro-Wave (Rule 2 plug it in) not much better.
4. Informed the cashier/front person that the food was cold twice and she just looked at me like "well how dare you".
So if you want cold food watered down coffee for a big price this is the place if not seek another place to eat.
I went here for a breakfast/lunch with my family on a Sunday. Â The place was very crowded and a bit smaller than I expected. Â We waited for about 5-10 minutes to be seated. Â The atmosphere was lively and noisy. Â
They served fresh rolls and muffins which was nice. Â I ordered a waffle and bacon. Â The food arrived without too long of a wait. Â The waffle was ok. Â The bacon was pretty good. Â I tried the french toast and it was better than the waffle. Â
The service was efficient and professional. Â Prices were fairly high compared to other restaurants. Â Considering the prices and food quality, I would not rush back. Â I would recommend going in off hours if you want to try it because it can be very busy and loud during peak hours.
I've been here a handful of times, and this place is pretty good, serving up your standard breakfast/diner fare.
Definitely a popular place with the older crowd, but you pretty much could have guessed that with where they are located.
The workers are always nice.
You never have to wait long to get your food.
The food is nothing to rave about, but it is also nothing to complain about.
It's that traditional, comforting, homey kind of breakfast place that everyone enjoys every once in a while.
Kappy's is a typical example of a great Chicago-area institution--the Greek-owned restaurant with international cuisine and breakfast all day. If you like this kind of place, this is the kind of place you'll like. ; )
I never see much to make it stand out from the competition. They have the usual water glasses that smell like milk even though they've been washed, cherry kijafa this and that, nice thick-cut hash browns, a bowl of rolls brought to the table after you're seated, and daily specials. They also have monthly specials, large portions, about a million desserts displayed in a big case, a number of "Athenian style" dishes, service that's good but not great, and a very kid-friendly atmosphere. The main difference I noted between here and similar places like Mrs. V's or Uptown Cafe is the "wall of fame." I challenge you to go in there and see if you recognize a single "celebrity" on it! I recognized one; my most recent dining companion squinted at it for a while and gave up on it. (I'd been hoping to see Ira Glass since I first heard about Kappy's on NPR, but alas. Either it was too far away for me to see, or it's not there.) This is an interesting game to play if you're done with the rolls but the food hasn't arrived yet.
Warning: not surprisingly, this place gets insane on Sunday mornings. The only time I ever had to wait to be seated was a Sunday morning, and I could barely move because I was seemingly trapped in a sea of walkers. Pretty much any other time of the week, there's no wait and you'll be seated promptly, but if you aren't afraid of the post-church restaurant rush yet, try it here and you will be.
Second warning: don't look at the dessert case unless you're willing to blow your diet. Just as the ancient Greek legends tell that Medusa could turn people to stone with one look, Kappy's dessert case can turn people to hungry with just one look.
How can you tell when you are in a real Greek Diner? My theory, and it was discussed amongst our breakfast crew, is that you are required to bring your check and pay the cashier, instead of having the server do it for you. I would love to know more about that tradition, and where and why it began, but let's talk about breakfast at Kappy's.
Huge fluffy omelets, a monster bowl of oatmeal with fruit and nuts whose reds, whites and blues made it look downright patriotic (see pic), good diner coffee, a big old waffle with fresh strawberries, long strips of crispy bacon, and  efficient and friendly Polish or Russian server, All of this was good fuel for a day of house-hunting.
This was my first time here, and I've always admired it for its very retro, mid-century modern appearance out here on this strip of Dempster Ave. I kind of wish I would find it one day with the parking lot full of late 50's and early 60's cars. Wouldn't that be awesome? So if you find yourself hungry for a big 'ole Chicago-style breakfast when you are out in this NW Territory, make sure to stop. It's well worth it. Friendly service, great food, good value.
My parents love this place and I love tagging along for free dinner :) Tasty diner food.
Sampled the Denver omelette with cheese, sweet & sou onion soup, and steak fajita, which were all delicious. Didn't get to taste the burger but the fries that came along with were also tasty.
Service was a bit slow considering how empty the place was.
I'm also certain I gained about 8 pounds. Boo.
Yes, this is the type of friendly family diner that makes you feel like a 10 year old no matter what. Why? Because the average age is roughly 72.4 years old. Looking over the tops of the booths it looks like rows of cue-tips.
There corned beef hash leaves much to be desired, but there many other breakfast dishes are always pleasing and the staff is out-of-a-1960s-truck-stop friendly and warm.
I am so sad. This place has been here forever and I grew up eating here with my family. I WANTED so badly to review it and give it the rave-ness that I enjoyed from the past. Alas, poor yelpers, I can't lie. We chose dinner here because we knew there was breakfast food all day. Why in the world I ordered dinner food, I don't know. Regrets, regrets.
We ordered the Kappy burger and short rib dinner. Positives: both came with soup, and mine came with salad, soup, tea/coffee/dessert. The prices were reasonable for a large heaping serving of food even if the following comments aren't positive.
The soups we got: matzo ball and cream of potato. Matzo ball was the standard diner kind, but was fine. Potato soup was super thick and heavy...couldn't really taste anything but cream. The burger was ok, made better with the sweet potato fries. My short ribs came out COLD. That's right, the temp was frigid on them meat and bones. The waitress had to go back and nuke them and then bring it out again, this time, steaming hot. Ugh. We also had to ask a couple of times for my iced tea (that came with my meal).
So, you would think for dessert I would have been smart and just get the jello or vanilla ice cream right? No....I ordered the red velvet cake and my hubbie got strawberry ice cream. Don't do it. Just don't. The cake was so dry I think I Â was dehydrated after the first bite. Shucks, not even the strawberry ice cream saved me...it was the extremely fake kind..where even the cream part of the ice cream tasted like strawberry syrup.
People used to stand in line for this place for dinner and breakfast...crowding the front area and outdoors. What happened? Did I come for the wrong meal on the wrong day of the wrong month?
Service was pleasant enough, but somehow I feel that the staff is tired and really didn't want to be there. That seems to be contagious...and we don't want to go back either.
*note* wherever they get their muffins/bread for the breadbasket, beware. I took one home and found a dead bug who died a violent death in one of the muffins. Â Ugh. Double ugh. Triple ugh.
Move over Denny's, Kappy's is in town!
I was out doing some shopping with my mommy and my brother and pulled out my handy dandy blackberry Yelp app to find us some breakfast grub. After a quick search for breakfast in Morton Grove, Kappy's was the first (and only) restaurant to pop up. Lucky us!
Great food, big portions. My only gripe is that with exception of a few
specials, the meal is pretty much a la carte. Want eggs or hash browns
with those pancakes? $4 please. (BTW, on the whole this place is kind of expensive for what I perceived to be a hole in the wall pancake house).
Friendly, attentive service! + 1 star.
Oh, I guess I have a second gripe - the pancakes. Kinda dry. Lacking the fluff I expected. I did though appreciate the way the butter containers were arranged around the warm syrup bottle, making it soft and spreadable.
We like this place. We go here pretty often. The service is fast and friendly and the food is pretty good. As others have said, we are often the youngest ones in there, but that's OK. They bring a basket of bread and muffins before the meal. I recommend the muffins.
To drink, I definitely recommend the hot cocoa. Â It comes in a little pitcher with enough for 2 cups and a lot of whipped cream on the top. Â It's delicious.
Their soup of the day on Thursdays is split pea, and it's the best! In fact, we usually go to Kappy's on Thursdays because we love the split pea soup so much. Most of the sandwiches and meals come with a regular sized bowl of soup, but they also have a large bowl of soup available, which is what I sometimes get as my meal.
Their Reuben sandwich is fabulous! It comes open-faced, with lots of cheese and the 1000 island dressing is homemade. I highly recommend it. I also like the open-faced turkey sandwich, which is made with really good roasted turkey and served with mashed potatoes and gravy. The pancakes are really good, too. The only downside to ordering pancakes is that they don't come with soup. Of course, the soup can be ordered as a side, which I did once. Who doesn't like pancakes and soup as a meal?
I'm not a big fan of their desserts, though. They look delicious when you walk in and see them in the case. But, as is typical it seems with Greek diners in the area, the cakes are really dry and not so good. It's unfortunate, but true.
The good news is that the portions are huge, so you probably won't be hungry for dessert anyway.
The restrooms (I can only speak for the women's, but my bf has never said anything so I'm assuming the men's is good, too) are always very clean and look like they are tended to regularly.
Overall, if you are in the area and are hungry for some diner food, I recommend Kappy's.
I've been to Kappy's several times over the years. Recently a friend came in via the Tri-State tollway and we decided to meet at Kappy's for convenience.
Kappy's is okay. Their menu is typical Greek family. I had a bowl of matzah ball soup, a sliced turkey sandwich and fries. Nothing special here, but the frozen fries were below average and soggy.
We sat on an outside (perimeter) booth and there were small brass plaques installed on the wall adorned with customer names. I'm sure this is a great tool for customer loyalty ala the defunct Bones in Lincolnwood.
Our waitress was pleasant but harried--no points deducted here. The decor is a bit dated, but acceptable. I noticed a little water dripping from the old, painted, 12" x 12" ceiling tiles.
Kappy's is located on the corner of Dempster and Harlem in what once housed a Marc's Big Boy Restaurant. There's adequate parking and good access from westbound Dempster and Harlem Avenue.
Give it a try and see what you think. I'll probably hold off for another couple of years before I return.
I lived in Niles for 2 weeks in between apartments so got to know Kappy's pretty well! Â Great food, huge selection but not in an everything-comes-from-the-freezer kind of way. Â The lox platter is fail-safe. Â Had the banana pancakes this morning - the pancakes were good but the bananas didn't taste right. Â A friend had the pancake sandwich with ham - delish. Â They're breakfast specialty is bacon and banana pancakes - still haven't tried that!
The service isn't bad, but either their waitstaff is flighty or they're just always too busy. Â Coffee is a little watery. Â Always bustling with the retirement crowd which I think makes for a fun breakfast every once in a while! Â Great place to go if you're in the neighborhood. Â They also do pig roasts and stuff in the summertime.
The thing about Chicago is that you can drive around and find any kind of food. That's what happened when my husband and I had no idea what we wanted for dinner, but I felt like traditional food so we stopped at Kappy's.
Prices are not outrageous, but definitely not as inexpensive as we thought. Service is friendly and fast, coffee is decent.
Now, the food... Maybe I wasn't that hungry after the huge bowl of cream of chicken and rice (which was really good!), but the chicken parm I tried didn't wow me. The pasta was overcooked (I like it al dente) and the crust of the chicken was a little hard to chew on. But it wasn't bad.
My husband had mini burgers and wasn't really impressed, but we got complimentary bread pudding and I have to say I like it.
I will definitely give this place another try, but I have the impression I will have to do it alone. The dessert menu looks interesting. ;-)
If you wake up hungry in Morton Grove, Â Kappy's is probably the closest breakfast joint.
It's your typical American diner (with a few Greek specialties).
The portions are good. Omelets are fluffy. Â Pancakes are....pancakes.
Order a side of "Maple Chicken Sausage" links! Â When I feel like going full-blown carnivore I order the "Irish Breakfast" with those links on the side. Â
Service is good. Â Ambiance is pleasant.
It wasn't awesome, but it wasn't bad.
I've never been here for lunch or dinner. Â Their omelets are always a safe choice.
A friend and I stopped in around 6pm on a weekday. Â The place was mostly empty, with maybe 5 tables filled. Â This much is clear: They must have a steep senior citizen's discount. Â All the other customers were 60+. Â I know it shouldn't matter, but it did feel awkward for us when everyone seemed to know each other and were going up to each other's tables (right next to ours) and chatting about when they were here a few days ago.
The food is not terribly expensive... but not terribly good either. Â A basket of muffins and breads came before the food, and was a nice touch, though over half of it was stale. Â My chicken noodle soup was lukewarm and had started to go sour-- either that, or someone had put vinegar in it. Â Honestly, I was too embarrassed to say something ("I think you served me bad food"), considering how nice our waitress was... Â
The chicken pot pie was not the traditional kind that comes in pie form, but the kind sandwiched by puff pastry. Â It was huge, but had way too many big chunks of chicken breast that were too dry. Â I don't remember what my friend got (pancakes, I think) but he was actively disappointed, too. Â
I feel like I'm snubbing a grandparent here... but I won't be back.
My coworkers and I stopped at Kappy's for lunch. Â It's a very typical pancake house and we definitely brought down the median age but don't let that stop you from going there. Â
The menu was extensive & they were very accommodating to make me a veg-friendly sandwich. The service was very good. Â Our waiter was totally on top of things and very friendly.
I've been going to Kappy's for lunch for many years. Â Overall, it is a decent place.
The food isn't exceptionally good... but its good enough for the price. Â Their soups and baked goods are great.
Service, for me, has been great and friendly. Â The management does a pretty good job at staying on top of things.
This place always seems to be very busy. Â From my observation, Kappy's seems to attract a lot of police officers and older people.
I have never tried Kappy's for breakfast or dinner.
But this is the place a friend (one in particular) and I come for "coffee" in the later evening (Nine-ish)
It's kind of funny, because neither my friend or I ever order coffee that late at night.
We order anything from soup, sandwiches, fruit plates, to dessert or breakfast-type eats. Always good.
The waitstaff is super friendly, busboys super efficient, and the management very nice.
This is your typical, All-American, coffee-shop, diner.
Vinyl booths, bread baskets brought to the table, rotating dessert display in front.
I can always appreciate when I ask if "the tuna-fish salad is fresh" you get a honest answer... "Yes" or the scrunchy face saying "Why don't you order the "fill in the blank" instead.
Never been here for dinner, just for breakfast. Â I love making my breakfast circuits.........been here several times. Â It always seems to be on a Sunday. Â ALWAYS a mistake! Â If you can get up and early....get there before 9:30am..........or you're gonna run into the Senior Swamp! Â Where they take over the joint on a Sunday.
The place itself is big...........and I have never really had a bad breakfast here. Â Hey as long as they are on top of my coffee refills.....and the food comes out in a reasonable amount of time and is edible........I don't have a problem. Â The only problem like i said is a Sunday morning......but that's my favorite day of the week for breakfast, so get up and out of the house early!!
