It was about 100 degrees outside, but my friends and I were still able to sit on the patio, which was actually pretty populated. They have fans and mysters (spelling?) so that it feels cooler out there... kind of like the lines at Six Flags. Haha. Super dog friendly, which I LOVE! Their quesadillas and guac were good. Prices weren't bad and their service is great... and not to mention, very conveniently located! Will definitely make my way back soon!
Review Source:Had to come back for an update......... YOWZA, best cheeseburger, pretty much ever. Â You can eat it with a fork (weird, I know.) and it just falls apart. Â Great flavor! Â I think this is a great casual hangout for groups. Â The service has gotten much better as well--friendly, fast and competent! Â This location is super convenient for me, so I'm glad they're nearby! Â I really love the patio, as it feels very outdoorsy. Â It's surprisingly breezy in the Texas heat with the misters and shade! Â The crowd here is so diverse which I think is great! Â Yep.. I'll be back....probably quite frequently!
Review Source:I am on the fence about this place. Â I could already tell it was a vast improvement from the previously named Bandito's. Â The overpowering wood smoke smell is gone. Â I was excited about the Texas beer list as well. Â We got a great seat outside. Â Loved the new landscaping and appreciated the misting fans.
We ordered the loaded queso and chips which was pretty good. Â Not clumpy. Â Could have been more "loaded". Â Comes with salsa as well which tasted very fresh. Â We also decided to share the BBQ sausage plate. Â Their sauce is great, vinegary and spicy. Â The sausage was juicy. Â It comes with slaw (which was really salty) and charro beans (not sure there were even any beans in mine).
The upsetting part of the meal was the check. Â I had 3 beers and the husband had 3 beers. Â Mine were priced at $8 each and his were $7 each. Â I can understand the price if we were drinking specialty imports or big beers but these were drafts in schooners! Â I guess I should not have assumed that they were going to be around $5 a beer (there are not prices on the menu). Â Was not expecting to spend over $55. Â :(
I think this place is good or bad depending on what you are looking for. Â Really reminds me of the original Katy Trail Ice House in that it is way more about the drinking than about the food. Â Plano might not be used to that. Â After you get over the fact that the menu is minuscule, the drinks are yummy, the service is great, and the vibe is singles, marrieds, pups, and kid friendly.
Seriously, eat here only if you have to. Â I'm pretty sure anything coming out of the "kitchen" was purchase pre-made somewhere else. Â Horrible guacamole, queso, chicken salad etc. Â Maybe if you have had enough beer or a couple of their very strong margaritas it tastes great.
And I'm not sure what happened with several of the other reviewers on here, but we've been there several times and never had bad service. Â Always very friendly, and maybe not lightening fast, but no delays that I ever really noticed. And the temperature on that patio is at least 10 - 15 degrees lower than the outside air elsewhere in Plano...so that is a huge selling point for the summer.
We will keep coming back...for drinks and relaxing.
Love this place! Â I went for an office birthday, but I will be taking my family back. Some of the best brisket tacos ever. Â Very tasty and tender brisket that is not too wet to make a good taco. I also tried half of my coworker's jalepeno burger...YUMMO. I usually eat salads, and this burger was worth the splurge.
Review Source:The Katy Trail Ice House has moved North, bringing with it its relaxed patio atmosphere, great drink selection, and trading in the 20-something young professional social scene for cougars, potential sugar daddies, married couples out on dates and "locals" who don't want to have to trek all the way to uptown.
I came by the first time to try it out for lunch and came back with my wife one weekend (falling into the category of "married couples out on dates" referenced above). Â I was really pleased overall in both visits with the promptness of service, but found my sandwich at lunch lackluster. Â In short, it reminded me of my last visit to the original Katy Trail Ice House.
This was my first trip to the Katy Trail Ice House Outpost. Â The gal at the front door seemed friendly. Â I did not sit indoors so did not have any interaction with the folks at the bar but they did not seem very interested in the patrons. Â We chose to sit outside as the weather for July ridiculously nice. Â Our server, Teri, was very pleasant and patient as we looked through the list of beers offered. Not much of a beer drinker these days but a cold schooner sounded good. Â Nothing exciting to write home about there though...icy cold beer from a typical Texas beer company. Â The food on the other hand less than anything to write home about. Pricing is a bit too high for the average bar offerings. The food in general boring and bland and overpriced.
Outside area is pretty nice...metal chairs are nice to look at not so comfy to sit in though. Â Love the way they made the area seem more like a backyard setting in the woods and I like that it is dog friendly. Â
Overall nice atmosphere but I hope they rethink their pricing and the food choices on the menu otherwise not sure how well this place will do after the newness wares off.
I was so disappointed. Â We are always looking for a new place for lunch/ dinner. Â We love Texas themed places. Â The atmosphere was what we like, and the service was good. Â The food, however, was not. Â We had a cheeseburger and onion rings, very basic. Â The meat on the burger was not a good quality. Â The burger was on the menu as a half pound. Â I am sure if you added the two thin burger patties together it might have been a half pound. Â The burger had a distinct bacon taste, and the vegetables were wilted. Â The onion rings were tough. Â There are so many places to get a better burger, including fast food burgers. Â I, like others, really wanted to like this place. Â I doubt I will be going back.
Review Source:I was a little worried when we first arrived and the waitress told us she was not really a beer drinker so didn't know any beers on tap. The service was super slow at first but as the night went on, the service got a whole lot better. There were a ton of people there. We sat outside and kept cool from all the fans and shade. The food was okay, but it is a bar. I cannot wait to go back and try some different beers!
Review Source:New name, same crappy service. I work close by and a group from my office come here about once a month. The device since it originally opened as Banditos and continuing to today has been poor at best. They are consistently understaffed during lunch. Meals are often severed piecemeal or forgotten. The wait staff is always rushing and overworked. The food is OK. The only reason we continue coming back is because of the atmosphere and patio. Other than that, this place will fall short of anyone's expectations.
Review Source:Went the other evening for the first time.
Plus side - Neat venue. Lots of TV's. Â Outside patio area is nice and the misters help keep the temperature tolerable. Â Food was fairly good. Â Dog friendly on the patio.
Negative - Noisy inside. Â It seems like the staff is being pushed by management to upsell the expensive items. Â Yes, happy hour can be great, but $1 off and the margarita is $10.25??? Â The staff does not "offer up" information - overheard one explaining to a friend that they have been told not to. Â I inquired about a beer for happy hour and was shown the menu - $1 off a $6 beer? Â Waitress did not even offer the happy hour beer special that was $4. Â Crowded outside - but 6 tables had reserved on them. Â They were empty 2 hours later when we left.
Overall, it has the feel of an establishment where the owners are trying to take advantage of a new opening and rush to get their base money out as quickly as possible with these tactics.
As the location has always had trouble holding a restaurant, I'd give it a year and out.
I really wanted to like this place as it has a great atmosphere and an amazing patio. Also you can bring your pup along and pretend he is your DD....
First off ordered a Shiner bottle but was told that they don't have that (Shiner was clearly listed under the bottled beer section but what would the menu know?) so no biggie.. Draft it is... So next on deck is the wife... She attempts to order a Shiner Blonde... Nope they are out...(for a place that specializes in Texas beer kinda embarrassing I would think) Ok how about a PBR she asks (she's no hipster... she really likes the way it tastes) after taking the order to the bar she comes back and says that they are out. Really?! For a "beer garden" that's a pretty big whiff...
Next adventure.. ordering the food.. They have BBQ (only on the weekend).. Well it was 7pm and they were out of everything except turkey and chopped beef. Also was told that the kitchen was backed up and that the BBQ is already prepared and would be out in like 2 minutes. After a bit of socializing with another couple we were with we attempted to order. We opted for the BBQ since it was "quick"... Food arrives 45-60 minutes later well most of it... Mine was sent out incorrectly and was told it would be corrected by the food runner. Well it wasn't... she didn't even know until she came to check on us after everyone was all but done with their meal.
To make an already long story short.. It was a complete bust. Super slow service. Clueless waitstaff. Honestly the worst service I have ever had.
Fantastic vibe outside. They added a bunch of landscaping (trees, big bushes) to create a natural barrier from the street. I think they really captured the feel of a Texas Icehouse. Good selection of beers. As a place to hang out and drink a few beers with friends, this is as good as it gets. If you don't like REK or Pat Green, this isn't the place for you. But I'm guessing you knew that already.
Plenty of TV's inside and a couple outside to watch whatever game is on.
Compared to the short-lived Bandidos, the food at KIHO is pretty bad. Typical greasy bar food that was a little overpriced for what it was. Kid's menu items are $7, which to me communicates that they aren't as interested in having families with kids come as Bandidos was. That's kind of a shame, because the newly landscaped area is a lot more kid-friendly now that it's treed in. Â Food was probably two stars.
Service (on a Monday night) was immediate and great.
Ok well I will be on the other side of the fence from the other Planoites who gave KTIHO a bad review - I love it.
We came to Banditos quite often back in the day, even the last day before it closed. We came out during the soft opening last Saturday - got a great seat on the patio, perfect in the shade with the misters and fans blowing. We had two separate waitresses, as we were there for 6 hours (had a lunch and dinner waitress) and both were super friendly, fast, helpful, etc. They didn't have a few food items and didn't have the entire beer menu, but that's part of the soft opening.
If you are looking for a normal restaurant - you have a billion other options around you. As the waitresses and managers all said - this is meant to be more adult oriented. Great job on the conversion, new beers and menu.
