Went to Kona's with my family for a birthday dinner and wasn't disappointed!  Delicious and really beautiful sushi. Great service and atmosphere!  Everyone was delighted with their food.  Our server was great at explaining and describing the sushi choices to a couple of first-time sushi eaters in our party.  The raspberry mojito was wonderful!  The only negative is that I wish it were a little cheaper so I could eat there more often.  I will definitely keep Kona's on my list of special occasion places!

Did the reduce their menu?  We love Kona.  Haven't been in a couple of months so we went on 2/15 for a valentines dinner. As always food was good but our server was really bad.  She acted like she didn't want to be there and had no personality.  She took forever to take our food order and never came back when the food came out.  Our friend flagged her down to get the check and another table of patrons asked to borrow chopsticks and soy sauce b/c they said they asked her twice and she never brought it.

If I could rate this separately for service and food, food would get 5 stars and service would get a 2.  The food is great, their sushi is particularly great, but I cannot recall one time where I had good service.  On average, I wait 10 minutes or more to just be acknowledged, and drinks don't usually get to the table until 20 minutes or more after we've sat down.  So, I never come here when I am time restrained.  Plus, only one or two of the servers has actually been really nice.  Mostly, they seem to be overwhelmed and overworked, and just over being nice because of it.  But, if you go in not expecting wonderful service, the food is great, and it has a nice atmosphere, especially on the porch, to sit with friends and chat.  I do wish the porch wasn't first come, first serve, though, as you have to hover over people who look like they may be leaving, and when you have finished eating, you get hovered over as well as 2-3 groups try to beat each other to your table.

I've been to Kona Grill so many times I can't believe I haven't reviewed it yet. It is by far one of my favorite places to eat. I especially love the happy hour menu they offer from 3pm to 7pm. You can't beat the prices! Kona was my top pick for my birthday dinner this year and I was not disappointed. They have some of the best sushi and I love that they will wrap any of the rolls in soy paper. I'm not a seaweed girl at all so soy it is for now. I haven't had a roll yet that I don't love and the avocado egg roll appetizers are my absolute favorite.  If you sign up as a Konavore on their website, you get a $15 off birthday coupon. Who doesn't love that!

Great Happy Hour and Wednesday 1/2 price wine deals! Sushi is prepared fresh with a large variety of rolls to choose from. The 'bama roll and checkerboard were our favorites. It is usually crowded on Wednesday so be prepared to have less than the usual service you would expect. Our server did her best to keep up. Great place for a group to go and hang out or easy on the wallet on a date night!

Been there a lot, pretty good. Only a few really good items. Macadamia chicken is very good.

I've been to Kona Grill on several occasions since my first visit in May 2011, including my daughter's birthday (two years running). Service is always good. The sushi is always fresh. Ask about the rolls that aren't on the menu - they are worth it. I've only ever had sushi, cocktails and dessert, but I've never been disappointed.

Ambiance of this place is good. They have so many items in the menu and a picky eater will able to find something. They sushi rolls or maki are impressive. They have such a variety. Our favorite was the Las Vegas roll. The calamari as a starter was good as well. Service was great and the waiter couldn't be more precise when it's turn to refill our drinks. The location is very convenient since you can go shop around the block then grab something to eat here.

Visited Kona a few times while in Carmel for the BMW Championship. I hear it's a chain but I had never heard of it. We yelped this place up one evening and the reviews helped make my decision. I was quite pleased with my sushi on our first visit and especially since I only paid $7.39 for two rolls off of their happy hour menu. The Fiery Shrimp Roll was my favorite of the two. The Spicy Tuna Roll is also quite tasty. On another night, I ordered the Pan Seared Ahi Tuna steak with rice and broccolini. It was served with a sweet chili sauce on the side. I enjoyed it immensely. My tuna was perfectly medium rare with a pepper crust and quite thick and tender. The vegetables were great but could have been cooked a little longer. My meals were overall, delicious!

4 stars??? Where are guys eating? Walk in, go to hostess stand, no one home, sit at the bar, no one home and it smelled, sat at the sushi bar, no one home, employees just walking around looking at you bewildered. Friend finally walks up to someone asks for a menu, someone seats us at the sushi bar, next to trash cans, literally can see and smell multiple trash cans, lol. Awful, sushi bar had food bits and dust all over it. Place was FILTHY. Inside the glass counter, you can see what appeared to be some tuna or something in a bin, brown and congealed. I look at the guy and say I don't want any of that in what I ordered. He just kind of looked at us. We ordered the Tuna Avocado tower, the sunshine roll and something else. Thank God it didn't taste fishy, but it didn't taste good either. Wildly mediocre at best. The general hygiene of this place and the smell along with the horrible service and attention are enough to bring my review all the way down. Oh and it was like $45 for these three small very ordinary dishes. This place sucks, we went Wasabi the next day and it was infinitely better...

Ryan superior service gracious and helpful!!! It was only your second day but obviously not your first serving shift on the floor! Awesome job I have been using Ryan as an example of perfect customer service.
My wife and I have recently stared a modified paleo diet called whole30 and Ryan was so detailed in asking questions to make sure she had a clear understanding of what are dietary needs were! Ryan I would love to have you serve at my restaurant!

Ask for Ryan she is the best! Rockin' out good service since day #2 at Kona! Rock on!

We were there on Sunday at about 4:30, place was not busy at all, several staff standing around, took 15 minutes to get a glass of wine and a beer!  Food was just as slow.  We had several sushi rolls among four of us and only one was good.  The most bland sushi I have ever had.

    We will never go back.

Love, love, love.  Kona is one of my favorite places to eat.  Food is always superb, service is fantastic, and happy hour specials are excellent.  I especially appreciate that they will substitute tofu for almost all of their dishes.  The awesome thing about that is, they don't charge extra and it's only 50 cents if you add it to salad (where chicken is $4 and shrimp is $6).  The menu doesn't mention the tofu, just ask.  My favorite items are the asparagus salad, flatbread pizzas, veg sushi, pad thai noddles, and the oriental salad.  Yesterday for lunch I had the oriental salad with tofu.  The dressing was great, it was very "summerish."  My mom enjoyed the chicken pad thai, which is always a good option (and a little spicy!).  We sat at a table in the enclosed patio, one of the best places to sit in my opinion!  You can people watch, catch a little breeze through the windows, and chat and laugh!

Happy Hour is where it's at... half price sushi rolls, $6 appetizers (hello avocado rolls!), and drink specials.  3-7pm and 9-close.

I've only been to Kona Grill a handful of times, but I adore this place. Maybe I adore everything about Clay Terrace, but this restaurant could quite possibly be the cherry on top. Hello, wonderful sushi! My favorite place to sit is in the bar area by the open windows -- late evening. It's great to feel the cool air and have the opportunity to people watch if that suits your fancy. I can't remember the exact wine I had the last time I was there, but I do know I was satisfied. They had a great wine list and their happy hour food selection is definitely worth checking out. It's one of those places you eye when you're fatigue is setting in from an exhausting (but successful) day of shopping.

If you're into a more formal, round table setting atmosphere, venture inside. The lighting is perfect for a night out with your love bug. Ah, I do love Clay Terrace.

Great food and great service in Mom's day. Had calamari & spider roll, my shrimp  pad Thai noodles were great & not spicy. Thai beef noodle salad was good with lots of beef. My wife's salmon was tasty also even if it seemed a little underdone. Also a special on-the-house cupcake treat for Mom's day.

Went to Kona this week for Happy Hour and ordered a margarita.  It tasted like Koolaid, so I told my waiter that I think the bartender forgot the tequila.  The waiter told me that the Happy Hour drinks don't have as much alcohol in them.  What???  It's only a good deal if it's the SAME item at a special price, not all watered-down.  Who wants overpriced Koolaid?

Kona was the first restaurant I went to when I rolled into town 6 years ago. It has a great atmosphere with even better food! Even though I hate to admit it since it is a commercial restaurant it has some of the best sushi I've had in the Indianapolis area. If you're not feeling sushi, the house salad and sea bass are both excellent! As other reviewers have mentioned, you can't beat the happy hour drink and sushi specials you just have to get there in time ((3-7 & 9-11p).

Not at all recommened for the money. Cold clam chowder. (Must not have "cooked" it enough in the microwave.) Unflavorful steak. This was the wost meal I've ever had when spending more than $40. Would probably be the winner in that category for $20 too. My wife's meal was okay; her chili was good not great, and her fish was okay. Will never go here again.

This place gets a 4 because it is hands down the best happy hour deal ever! The food is nothing spectacular, but any place where I can order calamari, chicken skewers, two sushi rolls, and drinks for basically $30 is well beyond decent.  Yeahhhh I'm a fan.

I am really sad about this. My boyfriend had spoken about how great the food was, so we decided to make reservations for Valentine's Day. We make them well in advance (2+ weeks in advance!) for a 7:30 table. Unfortunately, when we actually got to the restaurant for our meal, the line to CHECK IN with the front of house was out the door. We found out while standing in line until 8:00 pm (and not even checked in at this point) that they were just now starting to seat 6:30pm reservations. SO disappointing as I was actually really looking forward to dining there. I really do not understand how a restaurant could be so under-prepared or somehow could have SO overbooked their tables. Anyway, after waiting 30 minutes just to talk to the hostess, we decided to dine elsewhere...which was next to impossible due to the day.

This is my go-to place for lunch! The clam chowder is -- wait for it -- BETTER than New England (I lived in New Hampshire 14 years. Trust me on this)!

The "Perfect Pairings" at lunch (till 2:00pm, M-F) is such a great value. My fave is clam chowder and crab crunch roll. My wife loves the sea bass (always an excellent choice).

Great atmosphere, and Dani is hands down the best server on the planet. Love the open-air lounge from May thru September.

I have visited this place on two different occasions and unfortunately both experiences have been very similar.

Maybe it is because I have only been in late at night, or maybe I get the server with too many tables already...I don't know, but the service I've received here always leaves something to be desired. For example, please warn a table when you are about to do last call that way we aren't stunned when we can't order anything else.

I love the late night specials (cheap pot-stickers, cheap sushi, GREAT drink options) and that's enough to bring me back when I'm out late in the area.

All in all, food - great! Service...not so much.

I love it here!! I always suggest going here for dinner dates. My favorite sushi roll ever is the Houston roll. It's so fresh and delicious! I love the bar area, especially the patio. It's a great atmosphere with friendly staff.

After we had a little misfortune at the hotel, we came here instead of the hotel restaurant. I'm glad we went to Kona Grill though! It was very yummy. There was a lot to choose from. I got the barbecue pizza and it was a fairly good size. It wasn't the best food, it was okay. It was a little dark though. I will be returning next time I visit Carmel, Indiana.

Pretty good - had the steak sandwhich at dinner which was cooked medium rare and was quite tasty. We had the edamame, pot stickers and avocado egg rolls for appetizers, those were all quite good. I found the edamame to be a bit too salty but nonetheless. The service was very attentive and friendly. I'd recommend kona grill. The pricing didn't seem overly high

If you get hungry or are craving some really good, cheap sushi late at night, this is the place to go. In the bar area, they have a normal happy hour as well as a reverse happy hour for the late night crowd. They have 1/2 priced appetizers and sushi and great drink specials. The beer selection is pretty limited, but decently priced and semi rotating, all of them are usually pretty good though.

Most of the items on their regular menu that i have tried has been pretty tasty, the only bad thing is that they took the Ribeye off the menu. It was a bone-in hunk of deliciously marinated steak, one of the best in the city; but for some reason they took it off and created some other version of it, definitely a downer. The regular menu can get a little pricey, but everything is really good.

The service here is usually superb, but every now and then it will get crowded, especially during happy hour and the weekend, and you may have to be a little patient. Definitely try to sit outside on the patio, it is a great atmosphere, they even have a really cool fire pit and heaters out there for when it gets cold.

Pick 2 menu at lunch and the happy hour menu offer good deals and a decent selection.  The sushi is pretty generic, but they'll bring real wasabi to the table if you ask for it.  The avocado egg rolls are good.  My girlfriends like the low calorie cocktail options, but I find the beer selection lacking.  312 will do the job during the summer.

The enclosed patio gives patrons a nice view of Clay Terrace's finest.  If you've never been to this outdoor mall, you might think parking is limited when you first drive up.  Don't fret, there are gigantic mall-style parking lots on either side of the main thoroughfare.

Okay, so I will occasionally give in and go to a "chain" restaurant.  In my defense, if you are in Indiana and you want to stand a chance of having seafood that has not been frozen solid as a rock and/or is freezer burnt--you are probably wise to not eliminate the franchises.

So why the Kona Grill?  I dunno.  Someone had catered their  sushi once and it was pretty good.  We did not do the sushi this evening though.  One son got a burger, one got a steak, and I got--are you sitting down?--the meatloaf!  Again, I dunno why.  I like my wife's meatloaf, but Mom's was always better.  I can't get Mom's anymore, so I figured any restaurant known for their seafood that would be presumptuous enough to list meatloaf on their menu--it had to be pretty good. And it was.

The steak was probably the best thing.  It was a good, aged meaty flavor that was cooked perfectly at medium and practically melted in your mouth.  I was able to talk the son out of bite, but I think he would have stuck me with his fork had I reached for a second bite.  My wife's seafood was sea bass.  Now sea bass has an interesting texture, at least to me.  It sort of tastes like shell fish, or kind of like a scallop.  Anyway, she proclaimed it quite good.  However, at the end, it is still a fish  The day they find a fish with four hooves and it moos, then they will probably have found a fish that I like.

Overall, a bit on the expensive side.  The bathroom sinks were of that new style where the water just disappears between layers of rock.  For dessert, we walked down the street to the Coldstone Creamery.

I'll start with 4/5 stars, considering this was my first experience and it only consisted of an appetizer. We were in the area and decided to stop in b/c we had a coupon for a free app.

We stopped in during an off time, so it wasn't very busy. But looking around I could see how it could on a fri or sat night. Very open floor plan with a great semi-outdoor area which I can imagine how cool it would be to enjoy a couple of drinks on a summer night while shoppers meandered by. Inside is a huge and well stocked fish tank another great mood setter.

The app we got was the guacamole egg roll, which was amazing. it was paired with the most delicious honey-cilantro sauce. I will definitely be returning to partake in some of the sushi I have heard all about...then we'll see if it can bump to a 5.

I have never been to Clay Terrace before but now after visiting I would like to go back!  I was trying to pick a Birthday lunch in the Indianapolis area and felt like sushi but wasn't sure if I might change my mind at the last minute (I'm either in the mood for Sushi or not).

I was impressed with the Kona Grill.  The flavors were fresh and the food was excellent.  I had a Kona Roll (can't remember the name as it was different) and it was large and delicious!  It was wrapped in soy paper which I was wanting to try (had never had sushi that way before) and I loved it!  No more chewy black tape!  I also had the clam chowder which while good, was a bit too salty for me--it also contained bacon which was kind of strange--but I knew that ahead of time.  My husband had the Pad Thai which he actually thinks was better than our local favorite (so that's saying a lot)--We both had alcoholic beverages that while good were a bit on the artificial tasting side and rather steep in cost.

Overall I would definitely come here again.  I had an excellent birthday lunch but I did find it a bit expensive for what you got.

There are few restaurants in Carmel that I would like to continue to go back to....but this is one of them.

    The sushi is huge!
    Their menu specials are AMAZING!
The atmosphere is cool and confident.
The back room is great for groups...and doesn't cost anything extra to reserve.

    Downsides:

Often the staff is so busy they can't really accommodate their guests at 100%. They are never rude (at least in my experience) but they are BUSY!
The tables are arranged VERY close together and you are on top of your fellow diners. Dislike.
    It's freakin' loud in there!

Lunch is wonderful at the Kona, but service was quite sluggish for dinner. There were long gaps in service and our waiter was not so attentive.  This is disappointing in a restaurant where $50 to $100 is a normal price for dinner.

The food is wonderful and does not disappoint.  However, the size of the "share" dessert seems to vary from time to time, perhaps depending on the server.

I have been to this place several times and have never been disappointed.
I am not a sushi eater so I cannot comment on that but the rest of the food that I have eaten there has always met my expectations. The Chicken Tacos are great as well as their Tomato Basil Bisque. The Macadamia Nut Chicken is great, IMO.
The food is a bit on the pricey side but I would rather pay a little more than eat at another Applebees/TGIFridays type restaurant.
I would recommend trying it at least once.

I've been here a couple of times and both times the restaurant was pretty middle of the road.  There was nothing really fantastic or amazing about this restaurant.

I ordered the halibut once and the salmon the other time.  Both times the food was mediocre.  It wasn't bad by all means, but it didn't blow me away either especially with how much it was.

I don't mind going back again for a group gathering or something, but it definitely wouldn't be a restaurant that I would crave or pick myself.

A normal dinner:  the food is decent, the drinks are pricey, and the service isn't the greatest.

Happy hour:  the appetizers and sushi are great, the prices are cheap, there are two time options 5-7 pm and 9-11 pm weekdays/ 10pm-midnight fridays and saturdays.

So avoid the dining room and head to the bar!!

When this place opened up my senior year of high school, I went out here so much with friends. It is kinda swanky for Indy, and the whole male waitstaff used to be super cute/hot. When I went a year ago, the service stunk and the waiters gave us attitude. I have to admit, it's better to eat in the bar area when you're 21 and have sushi there. However, I've had better sushi elsewhere in Indy and in Michigan so it's a toss-up.

Love Kona.  Great atmosphere, the food is always good, it isnt too expensive, and the bartender was amazing. He was genuinely friendly and talkative, but not in an annoying way.  Las Vegas Rolls changed my life, baby.  They are finally putting one in in MN (yay!) but its going in Eden Prairie(not yay!).

For starters I hate that I can't see my hand in front of my face because the place is so dark.

Secondly I got duped into trying the Macadamia nut Chicken which everyone talked about as if it were the best thing ever in the world. I have news for these super fans of that dish. It was not good. Usually I think of bad meals as just being sub par, this thing was barely edible.

Aside from the bad chicken dish, I have also had sushi here and would much rather stay closer to home for sushi, it's pretty blah, and it has day old fish flavor, blah.

One of my friend's live near this place so she decided to take me here since I was in town.  We were greeted promptly and decided to sit at the sushi bar.  They have a sexy ambiance, it's clean, and it is smoke free!

I had the Diablo Shrimp~spicy jumbo shrimp with a cool bleu cheese dipping sauce, Avocado Egg Roll~sun-dried tomatoes and red onions with a honey-cilantro dipping sauce, and a specialty sushi roll called the Spider Roll~Soft shell crab deep-fried w/ crab mix, avocado & cucumber wrapped in seaweed, topped with fresh salmon & thinly slicked lemon for about $33 not including gratuity and tax.  For a moment I thought I was back in Chicago!  Yes the food was good but damn and especially in Indiana!!  Our server had an awesome attitude and was quick!  The reason they did not receive more stars is because the food was not a value and I have had better for a lot less.
