I make regular visits to Kori--I like that they have Thai & Japanese, two of my favorite cuisines, so I don't have to decide which I want before I go! Â We usually get veggie tempura and maki. Â I love their crazy potato roll which has a bit of cream cheese & jalapeno. Â I've also had their fried rice and Thai curry dishes in the past and am always pleased. Â Love the dressing that comes on the salad.
Clean place, very nice atmosphere. Â Bathroom is impeccable...my son & I call it the "nightclub" bathroom, because the lights are low and the music is loud (in the bathroom, the restaurant is "normal").
They always bring a lidded cup for my 5 year old, and are very friendly.
There are some core dishes in the Thai arena that let you know if a place is good or stellar. Well, the Thai takeout was just okay.
First, the Pad Thai. Pad Thai is not my favorite dish in general. But it does let you know what you're in store for. The pad Thai was marginal at best here. Exceedingly sweet. And very bland spice wise. Even my husband didn't like it. And that's saying a lot.
The green curry was good and spicy. They didn't skimp on the tofu which was nice. Not a lot of extras in the sauce as far as veggies or anything. Also, the order came with a tiny box of rice. Really, guys? This order should come with a normal amount of rice. Considering you're a sushi and Thai place, you should have rice coming out your ears!
The order, however, was ready amazingly fast. Paying took a minute -- maybe even less.
So while the curry sauce would have earned three+ stars, the lack of rice and pathetic pad Thai makes it a two-star for Thai takeout.
stopped here a little while back and carried out an order of chicken pad thai and i have to tell you it didn't even taste like thai food...it tasted like bland cantonese food....i know having just one dish to base a review on may not be very fair, however, pad thai is one of those very simple dishes that should be pretty hard to screw up, and my expectations were not very high, but it was so blah i didn't even finish it....i guess i should give them one more chance, but i have to tell you i don't want to go back, sorry
Review Source:Came here while I was pregnant to try some noodles. The pad thai was pretty good, I've had better. My boyfriend had red curry shrimp, and it was also good. Our sushi appetizer and dragon roll appetizer were my favorite from here. The presentation added to the experience. The appetizers were presented the best. The waitresses were very nice and attentive. Thumbs up :)
Review Source:Nice place, went in for some sushi and they ending up selling Thai wich was sweet.
The sushi was defenately the winner.I was most impressed by the dragon roll.
It was so good,as was the sushi appetizer. The thai food on the other hand, was not impressive. It was good, but did not satisy.I ordered a spicy curry and it had very little curry paste and it was mostly coconut. It wasnt bad,it just wasnt very flavorful.plus the curry was dull in color and rice a lil dry.To the CHEFS,if you fry the curry paste a little instead of boiling it in the coconut, it will release more flavors and color and make a better curry.
A good experience, will def be back for another try.
I was leaning twards 3 stars, but the sushi ...the dragonroll...was just so tasty.
For that alone, i am 4 star satisfied in my first Kori Sushi visit.
Full disclosure: When we go, we go for the sushi and a few Thai appetizers. Â ALL OF WHICH ARE AWESOME! Â The sushi is delicious any day of the week and the Tom Kar soup is fresh, homemade and delicious! Â This is our absolute "go to" place for Sushi and anytime we want good, easy food out.
Review Source:This review is for the thai takeout only. I haven't had the sushi.
Disgusting waste of money. The majority of what we ordered we just threw away, it was that bad.
Tom Kha soup broth was GRAY. Enough said.
Fried basil with beef- chewy, fatty, mushy beef. No flavor to the dish.
Massaman curry with beef- same beef as in the basil; mushy, chewy, fatty, nasty. Massaman curry is supposed to be made with slow simmered, fork-tender chunks of beef. This was crap. The curry itself tasted like it had been made with sour cream and had no flavor except for a slight metallic taste which was odd. The potatoes tasted like something out of a can so perhaps that was the source of the metallic flavor.
The rice was overcooked.
Never again.
Kori is our favorite sushi spot in the area. Â It is really the only one that we have found that is as fresh as it is. Â The inside is very nice, surprisingly so, and a great place to go out to eat. We also get takeout from there and have never had a problem. They are fast, accurate and friendly. Â They have a wide variety of creative rolls. Â The prices are average for any sushi place, certainly not more expensive than anywhere else.
The half-off sushi is a GREAT deal that I wish I could take advantage of more. Â It really is half off every roll, including all of the expensive special rolls. Â It's from 4:30-5:30 M-Thursday.
My favorites are the Daydream roll and the Summer roll -- excellent! Â Go try out Kori if you are in the HP/HW area!
Have gotten food from here twice.
My first experience was dine-in and it was decent. I got the salmon tartar and the Tom Kha soup, which I liked. The music was playing a little loud so it was hard to have a conversation. The service was above average I would say.
My second experience was a take-order and it wasn't as great. They got my order wrong, unless they think salad is made out of noodles. I do like the Tom Kha soup though! Full of flavor, but put more mushrooms in it!
I get just the cooked rolls and they are amazing. I eat here at least 2 times a week and I love it and everyone I have brought here loves it. Yes it takes a little extra time but they are preparing the sushi fresh in the back and its worth the wait. The servers especially one guy with glasses asian guy is awesome. Great personality but everyone has been super nice there. And definately 1/2 price rolls before 5:30 Mon - Thurs dine in only cant complain. Yummmmmm Sumo Roll is the BEST and lobster roll Yummmm
Review Source:I'd heard great things about Kori from friends that adore their oft-talked about happy hour deals, including half off any maki on the restaurant. After all the buzz, I decided to spend a leisurely Saturday afternoon there catching up with a pal over lunch.
I cannot for the life of me remember what was there before but the space is absolutely gorgeous. Tons of wood, incredibly high ceilings, beautiful lighting fixtures, and both modern flatware and furnishings. This would make a great, low-key date spot.
Their lunch specials? Incredible. The server was more than willing to make a few substitutions to accommodate my and my dining partner's diets and the results were delectable. The tom kha was spicy and chock full of chicken, onion, and cilantro. The yellow curry was delicately spiced and the portion more than ample. My friend's sashimi looked fantastic with thick, fresh slices of raw fish on a bed of rice noodles and lettuce. And the tea? Oh, the tea. Perfectly steeped Japanese green tips.
Walking out at around $10 per person including an appetizer and with bags of leftovers in hand, Kori has easily become the best lunchtime value in the area. They also offer great coupons in the area mailers for both dine-in and take-out. Keep an eye out.
This Place is good for the happy hour sushi, plus its really nice inside. Two rolls we got were just okay and then we had another that was good. I always look for spicy rolls and then Im disappointed when they are not spicy...
Anywho it was good but I would probably only go for the half price happy hour.
If you like good sushi and have a lot of time on your hands for a very leisurely meal I would recommend this spot.
The sushi itself was quite good, but the service was slow and definitely not the best. It took ten minutes for our waiter to take our order, she forgot to bring our drinks and it wasn't until i sad something that I got the Diet Coke i ordered. We ordered 3 maki rolls which took 30 minutes to receive. I was increasingly surprised by the slow service because we were one of two tables seated at the restaurant.
although the food was good, i would not go back.
Great happy hour from 4:30-5:30pm of half priced rolls. I like the place for their happy hour but would choose other sushi places over Kori. Have not tried their Thai food but have had their Tom Kha soup which was pretty good. Sushi rolls tend to feature a lot of tempura and spicy tune/salmon which can be mushy.
Review Source:A friend and I were driving around town looking for sushi, and they all seemed to be on their lunch breaks. Â We got the suggestion to come here, and while neither of us had ever been, we gave it a shot because the sushi craving had set in (and we heard about a half off happy hour)
Well, I am usually suspicious of what "1/2 off rolls" means, as it usually applies to a california roll and spicy tuna rolls. We were the first customers in there, and we were SHOCKED to find that ALL rolls were half off!! Â So we ordered, and ordered, and ordered (all the rolls that you would like to get, but have to choose between usually because of the price). Â The food came out quickly, and it was soo good! I would definitely come back here, although who knows when I will be in this part of town again. Â
I felt bad for the staff at one point, though, because these a holes sitting a table over CREATED all of their own individual rolls (which is a pain, and i would know, Ive worked at a sushi place). Â Then, when they were told that the rolls wouldnt be half off BECAUSE THEY WERE SPECIALTIES they complained and moaned. Â I hate when people go into restaurants and try to make their own creations. Â Its not your house! --- (rant over)
I brought a group of 12 high school students (and three chaperones) here last night for a later dinner. I was worried about showing up without calling ahead, but there was plenty of room and the staff did a wonderful job accommodating us quickly. Good, friendly service.
I had the deep-fried JB roll, but the other sushi and thai dishes I saw all looked and smelled wonderful. All of the kids really enjoyed their meals.
I agree that the atmosphere leaves something to be desired, perhaps some plants to warm the place up.
I will definitely be back at Kori to try the Thai. Until then, 4 stars.
While the whole combining Asian cuisines thing is kind of strange...tasty food is tasty food. Do not come here if you are looking for an authentic Thai or Japanese experience. Just go downtown. If you want a nice place for some quick and reasonably priced Thai (did not order the sushi, so I don't know) this is your place on the north shore.
Review Source:Kori is a solid option for sushi or Thai in Highwood. Â The food is consistently good, the service is fast and friendly, and the prices are reasonable.
The Tom Kha soup is absolutely spot on and the best I have had outside of Thailand. Â I order it every time I go here. Â The overall menu is very expansive, with tons of options for both Thai and sushi. Â They have the standard sushi combos and maki, along with a few house selections.
Since I have been there four times now, I feel comfortable saying that the fish they use for the sushi is consistently fresh. Â With the sashimi deluxe or Chirashi (and their other combination platters) the sushi chefs do a great job of changing up what comes on the plate to guarantee that you get the best fish. Â Careful consideration like this really goes a long way. Â If you ask, they will also inform you of the day's selection and let you switch out any you do not like. Â
As far as I can tell, the rest of the Thai food ranges from adequate to good. Â I am extraordinarily picky when it comes to Thai food, so I have a really tough time ordering bastardized versions of my favorite dishes. Â The pad thai is serviceable and better than some other local places, but I would not really go out of my way for it. Â Also, you will have to really convince your server you want it spicy, otherwise they will hold back.
Since the Tom Kha soup is so good, I have been tempted to order the curries, but so far I have stuck to the sushi. Â
I could not quite give it five stars, because the pad thai is ok and the atmosphere is a little lame. Â But I definitely think of it as 4+. Â I will be back.
In a nutshell: this is a great place with very reasonable prices. We had dinner and carry out there. I was most impressed with the variety that they offer.
I wouldn't rate this the best sushi or Thai food I've ever had but everything was at least very good and if you are a little unclear about what you're in the mood for, their impressive menu will definitely help.
One area for improvement - and this is just my personal opinion - is the atmosphere of the place, it's a real cute building with vaulted ceilings etc. but overall the interior is little cold and could use few plants to take out the hall like appearance.
Being local I've seen several restaurants going out of business fairly quickly in this location, I hope Kori Sushi & Thai will survive!
