Stumbled upon this nice little Japanese restaurant while on a business trip thru town. We had an almost desperate need for some fresh Asian faire and Kyoto did just great! This place is located along a main street type shopping area amongst many niche shops and little eateries. It appears to be an older, family run place, but the décor is not to that "run down" stage yet. The place was clean, even the fish tanks and turtle tank (which I was pretty enthralled with) were clean and maintained. I even visited the bathroom which is always a good indicator.
We both ordered a lunch bento type box, chicken and steak. Both were substantial and fresh. The steak teriyaki that I was was fresh and perfectly cooked, and the California roll was a great side to it.
This is a worthwhile lunch or dinner stop, the sushi bar looked quaint and if I am to find myself in this area again, you will probably find me at the sushi bar!
This had been one of my favorite lunch places until today. The food has always been fresh and good. The place itself is nothing special with so-so service.
I ordered a salad and then asked for extra dressing. The server brought some in a tiny silver cup, maybe a tablespoon in there. On my bill they charged me 75 cents!
When I asked the waiter to take it off he told me "no" and could not change it.
I called later to ask them about this. At first they explained that is how they do things because of the expense, then they kind of apologized. I asked them if I order a hamburger with ketchup and want more ketchup should I be charged?
I come here a lot and and send many friends there. I can't believe they would do this and risk losing a customer.
They should watch out when Once Upon A Bagel opens next door...they are going to lose their lunch business!
The sushi and sashimi a decent. Â I had the sashimi combo for dinner; some fish were very thinly sliced. Â The tuna pieces weren't totally defrosted yet. Â Bento box for lunch has a lot of food (teriyaki beef + shrimp/veggie tempura + california roll + salad + rice + soup). Â I'd recommend here for lunch for sure. Â For dinner, I'd venture into their sushi rolls. Â
In terms of service, I did not get the family-owned, friendly service that a few other reviewers have mentioned.
Kyoto, Kyoto, I give you 3 stars. The sushi is decent, the Bento box filling, BUT the service is horrid. The multiple times I have been there, the server makes sure to stay as mute as possible and grumble should you "trouble" them for anything.
Last time I was there, I ordered edamame and had to ask twice for a little dish for soy sauce. urg. I mean that should come standard right? maybe I'm picky....no, it's them.
Oh and they only accept certain credit cards,...double check before you go.
We've eaten in this small no-nonsense restaurant several times and also carried out frequently. Don't go for the atmosphere or you'll be disappointed. However the sushi and sashimi are always very good, as are the appetizers. We've only had one hot entree, a noodle dish with chicken and veggies, and it was pretty tasty. My only knock on Kyoto is that the rolls are rather pedestrian. That said, the fish is always very fresh, service is never off, and prices are very reasonable.
If this place was in the city I'd probably give it an average rating of 3 stars because standards downtown are so high. But since it's in an area where choices are few and far between -- and where many options are sub-par -- I think Kyoto is a solid 3-1/2-4 stars .
This is a no frills sushi place that just makes great quality food. Its not a place that will impress by appearance, but the stuffed tomato (crab wrapped in tuna - topped with tempura flakes) is one of my favorites from any sushi restaurant - and I've been to lots of high-end sushi places.
Review Source:I ordered from here this evening and had a horrible experience. I asked whether they could make a vegetable udon, although it is not on the menu. Â They said that they could. Â When it arrived, there were only noodles and a Japanese cabbage in it. Â I then found a staple in the soup. Â When I called to complain, I found out that they charged me the same price as they would for a meat udon rather than the plain noodle udon (that was half the cost) plus an extra couple of dollars for the cabbage. Â When I said that they should have probably told me about that, they were unapologetic. Â I asked for a refund for the soup, which they gave me; however, I think good customer service would dictate both an apology for the disappointing experience and possibly something complementary. Â
The food my husband got was fine--not great, not bad. Â Due to the poor customer service, though, we will not be returning.
I wish I could leave two separate reviews - their sushi was excellent but their entrees were sub-par. My fried rice lacked any signs of flavor and didn't have the texture you'd expect from a good japanese restaurant. My wife's teriyaki chicken was way too salty. Based solely on the entrees I'd give this place 2 stars, but I ordered a single roll and it was fantastic - wish I had ordered only sushi.
If you come here, don't bother with the entrees, go right for the sushi.
This place is one of the BEST place you can EVER have GREAT sushi.
I can NEVER get enough of their hand salmon skin roll, their unagi rolls, californian roll....ANY ROLL for a matter of fact.
Each time I'm in town, I make it a point to drop by the restaurant with friends and family. This place is NOT to pass up.
I just moved here from DC. I've been testing out new places to eat in NorthShore. Some have been good and , yes, some have been bad. I'm so happy that I found Kyoto which reminds me of my favorite sushi place back home (Matuba). The food was great, the location was easily accessable, the pricing seemed fair and consistant with other sushi places. The ONLY complaint that I have to make is the lack of service. We went on a Friday night in the middle of a thunderstorm. Not many other patrons. The server was forgetful and mostly absent. However, because the food was so good, I'll be back to give it another try...maybe for lunch next time.
Review Source:Well we went there again last night ( a family of 5 thing - me, sis our spouses and my Mom) and the food was somewhat less than stellar... We were having such a fine - laugh it up - time - that we really didn't notice until we talked about it later.
Given our previous experiences there - the Sushi (and Chuck having a Pho craving ordered a noodle soup - which was so-so) well - the best way to say this is that it was somewhat lackluster. (Is is possible (!) that we've been spoiled by take outs from Sea Ranch???)
My $13.00 King Crab Roll did not quite live up to it's name... And my Soft-Shell Crab Roll - while very tasty - they did try to stretch a small fried crab into six pieces (I would have prefered 4 pieces that were a little "meatier."
And there seemed to be some Sake confusion - even though I brought in an empty Sake bottle - which I had taken home because it made for such a pretty "Bud Vase" - and because there seemed to be some confusion last time about which Sake we were ordering... which did not seem to help - confusion still prevailed...
Still - the food was pretty Okay - and we had a very fine time...! I'm not trying to make excuses for them, but given that we recently have had two splendid meals there - I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt - that Sunday is just not the best day to go out for Sushi - or fresh fish - in general - especially given the "energy crisis" (Ok - I know that's a stretch...)
But, now that my Sis has moved from Printer's Row to an adorable house in Glencoe I'm pretty sure we'll be dining in that neck of the woods more and more often...
There's only one thing I order- vegetable yaki soba and the veggie spring rolls. Comes out perfect and consistent every single time. My picky sister gives it 5 stars as well, both from a culinary standpoint and working in a korean place that served similar dishes for part of her career.
Excellent clean tasty food and the staff always knows my order before I sit down.
